Help wanted - HTC One X

Does anyone know the best prog to back up my sms and contacts and restore seamlessly in my htc one from my desire with no messing about. I tried mybackup but it wont see the backup on the sdcard. Any help would be appreciated .

Contacts i use Google - just needs a quick sign in of your google account and an even quicker sync and your contacts are there ready for you - alot easier than Sim or SD card for me

I have done that but got lots of the same name which means i got to go through them all. The sms migrated ok just the contacts are a pain

do htc devices on first set up not ask if you want to migrate data?

No i cant remember it saying that might need to bluetooth the buggers or something

try

cheers i missed that just got it today after delivery was screwed up last time i used mybackup and it worked perfectly but not this time

I would highly recommend QQ pim, you can back up all your contacts, sms, call logs even your apps via it's server.

Small facebook & contact issues

I'm sort of stabbing in the dark here, but my issue is this: When I open my received text messages, the peoples contacts that I have sync'ed with facebook should show their photo. This is how it worked when I first got my phone.
I have done a few factory resets since then, and yesterday loaded a new rom. I loaded my contacts that I had backed up to SD card.
For some strange reason ALL of my contacts have hiphens ( - ) in their phone numbers. I think this is causing some texts to not be delivered.
Also, when in the messages window, all of my contacts photos wont be displayed. But if I go to the people directory they are displayed fine.
Now, is there a way I can delete the cache or similar without factory resetting the rom?
I have rom manager, and I used this to reboot into recovery before loading a new rom. In there was options for deleting cache and things (to be honest I didn't know which was the correct one so I did them all before loading a new rom). Now when I go into rom manager it just loads a sign like this a!
so I cannot try that again.
Thanks for any help given!!
Why did you back up to memory card if they're going to be saved to the cloud via your Google account?
Otherwise I have no answer for your question.

I had all sorts of problems with the facebook integration.
The magor one I had was that the phone would automatically use the facebook phone number and not the one in the phone which was very annoying when people put fake numbers in their facebook profile or don't update for their new number and also all the numbers had a +44 on them which meant my phone wouldn't dial them at all!
My advice is remove your facebook account and see what happens. The try adding it again. If the problems persist then keep it removed. Life will be easier without your phone and facebook contacts being merged and updated all the time... trust me!
Phil
Thanks for your replies.
Regarding the backing up of contacts, does anyone recommend a GOOD FREE app for backing them up? I simply do not wish to use Google to back up my contacts. They are personal, and I would prefer to keep them on the phone. Google contacts is pointless to me.
If you would like Google contacts I have no say but I would rather not have my contacts spread out all over the place, with different versions etc...
It's going to take me forever to edit everyones phone number, and each time I flash a ROM I'll need to do it again..
Worst still, since flashing PaYs ROM the Google sync actually worked for the very first time since receiving the phone - So, now Google contacts has all of my contacts but the phone numbers have dashes is ( - ) which is wrong. Like the person above me, us in the UK have issues when dialing strange numbers!
Google contacts is fine, means you never have to worry about them being backed up as it's automatic...otherwise you've gotta sync them with yur email client on your PC which is hassle...I was a stickler for backing up to Outlook but now use Google...
The dashes come up after restoring contacts from the SD card...don't know why it does it but it can't be removed (another reason not to back up to sd card)
while in the htc people app, just press menu button then you can export your contacts to your sd card, which you can then later on import again.

You asked for a way to back up your contacts without syncing them with google contacts, I provided you with a way to save them without having to use any app.
(it's the dutch flag, just made the World cup soccer finale)

Fair play, but it is this way of backing up contacts that is giving us the problems as per post #1 and this discussion
I have done a few factory resets since then, and yesterday loaded a new rom. I loaded my contacts that I had backed up to SD card.

Congrats on the world cup. I have stopped paying attention since we lost.
sorry my bad, i'll let you guys get back at it
Try contact2sim
Limitation of course is the small sim memory for numbers only.

[Q] Pc desktop sync software recommendations

Hi all,
Im surprised that there is no proper pc desktop sync program for the HTC android devices.
Im used to backing up everything on my pc such as with Nokia Pc Suite (which is still better than ovi suite in my opinion). Im presuming Samsung, Blackberry all have similar software suites which back up contacts, sms, mms, photos, etc etc.
For legal reasons I need to have backups of my sms messages.
Ive tried using Android Manager (by Mobile Action), but it seems to be very buggy and simple. Also the android manager apk seems to 'hijack' the phone, and not allow selection of disk drive etc.
The only other desktop sync suite I have seen is by Mark/Space, but they dont even have a demo to download to try first!!!
Are there any other programs out there that back up with a viewable GUI that allows you to browse the backed up sms etc
I dont want to backup to a cloud. I need the actual hard copies backed up to the pc for legal reasons. Even better if sms messages could be saved individually in non-editable format.
This is my only gripe with android so far!
Have you tried HTC Sync for Android.
It's available on their website.

I require a software suite with a GUI so that I can browse through txt messages etc. With HTC sync you cannot view anything....it just backs it up
Have you tired this application?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=574677
I use to use it with my HTC Hero and haven't got round to trying it on my HTC desire, but this allowed you see texts and write texts via you PC, but you don't do it via USB you do it via WIFI.
Hope this helps and I'll quickly see if it works on mine so I'm not sending you on a goose chase. :
*Update* The applications works, and it also allows you to change the settings on the phone and look at photos you have taken as well as change contact details. ^_^ Going to start using it more now I know it works on the HTC Desire . Hope this helps

Great! will try this 2nyt when I get home. If only HTC put some effort into a desktop suite, not just some crappy backup/sync application.
Thx!
No problem, Yeah I agree that HTC should add some of these features into their software and keep their older phone up-to-date rather than creating new phone, but hey that's common sense I suppose haha.

[Q] Titanium Backup : can you backup your sms?

How would you recover your sms with Titanium Backup?
is that something possible or we have to use something else?
thanks
I was wondering that too. I have the paid version, love it, but I thought I backed up the messages as well. Apperently not though.
Did I miss the setting?

There's a free program in the market that I used to back up and restore my SMS called SMS Backup & Restore (by Ritesh Sahu)
I've had no problems with SMS Backup+ from the market - it stores the texts and MMS to your Gmail and allows for backup and restore. Makes it real simple.
Titanium does backup the SMS data, but I don't remember where it does, and on my myTouch3G 1.2 it was kind of buggy restoring it (though it mostly works). I think it's the data from Dialer Storage 2.2 that houses the SMS/MMS?
Handcent now backups sms/mms
I used to use SMS backup from above post, but it wasnt able to do mms' (at that time) so I tried Mybackuppro (in the market) and it works perfect. plus it does other backups too. I ended up buying it.
I used to have problems with Titanium with sms/mms, but I havent tried any recent versions.
I use MyPhoneExplorer. It syncs everything on your phone to your PC.
this could be outdated info now, but when i used titanium backup to backup sms/mms, it would make a backup of the phone dialer and the associated files from /system. This is not the best way to backup the sms's since a new rom may have made modifications to this.
i recommend sms backup and restore, which is what i use myself. titanium backup is great for apps and app data though!
Sorry for bumping and old thread but this brings up a question. Would any of these be able to create a backup of your SMS/MMS and convert them over to a text file of some sort so you can print up records of them? I remember when I had a Blackberry I used to be able to do this with software I purchased for it. This would be a great feature I would be interested in using. I tried searching for something that discussed this but came up with nothing. Sorry if its been covered before. Thanks in advance.
To back up texts just make a back up of Dialer Storage [SMS/MMS] and restore.

I think marvzuno wants something that can backup AND convert the message to a text file to be read on a computer or something, not only a backup...

I'm looking for something more like the poster below was talking about. Thanks for the info though. This will be useful just for the backup process.

Yes, Something that would convert the backup file into something I would be able to view on a computer. ANy suggestions or ideas on this?
I'd like to put in my vote for SMSBackup+. The restore feature doesn't always work perfectly, but the backup has never failed me. stores it as plain text in your gmail, which is then searcheable.
Love SMS Backup+, saves them to Gmail and can also pull them back to the device as other people have said, works great, no issues!

[Q] Messages<--where gone thou?

Hi a while ago i was trying to root my phone,so i copied the contents of two sd cards on to my pc,whilst resetting everything last time, and inserting the memory card with one of the images, all my messages returned again,so somewhere on the sd memory this lives,id rather not go through the process of transferring stuff off etc of my current mem card,so does anyone know the location of the data relating to messages?
I know it seems longwinded but if anyone knows id appreciate it as i need one of those messages
I am sure that SMS messages are not stored in the SDcard. They should be stored somewhere in the /data folder in the internal memory...
However, I think your messages came back from HTC sense account sync if you had one before you wiped everything.
Setup HTC sense account again and cross your fingers, if you have a sense account now, delete it a re-do it and hope that might help.
You are in fact a legend, that worked
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I really fail to see what HTC Sense Accounts were about. It was probably a major factor in me getting a DHD over the D (of course, now that I am running a custom ROM, I wouldn't go back!).
Anywho, they are meant to be able to track your phone, see where it has been, store all your messages etc. I set it up as instructed, logged in, ran through all the hopes, enabled all the right settings, and what happens? Nothing. 95% of the time when I try to access the site, it doesn't want to work. Also, it has only saved about my first 5 text messages.
In the end I find that using SMSBackup+ is the best thing to do. It allows you to backup all your texts/mms/call log to your GMail account.

[Q] Contacts not Syncing....Help required

My contacts last synced with my Gmail account on Thursday 29/9/2011 at 08h37. It has been saying that Sync is currently experiencing problems and will be back shortly.
Everything else syncs fine, it's just the contacts.
I have rebooted the phone several times. Nothing seems to help. I really don't want to do a default reset if I don't have to. Any ideas?
Much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Regards,
MAC

I did just that but it keeps giving the same error message.
Here the same ,error when syncing google contacts, since february 2011...
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Finally sorted out...
I went to Android Central and the answer was there!!!
Here's what to do:
Menu>Settings>Account Sync>Disable all
Then (Be sure to backup call log, contacts etc before next step):
Menu>Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Contacts Storage>Clear Data
This clears the entire contacts database which seems to get corrupt after something or other. Mine happened when syncing Skype contacts!!!
Then Enable Sync again and, then REBOOT device immediately (note not just a power down and fast boot, but a Reboot/Restart).
Your contacts should start syncing again!!!
Yippee!!!
Yeah,it works but when I restore my backup ( contacts and call log) with my backup then I have the same error with syncing again...

I only backed up my call log. I did not restore my contacts because they were already there on Google. Try it without restoring contacts and let it sync with Google.
But how do you get the contacts from Google back on your phonelist?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
You let you your phone sync normally once you have rebooted. All your contacts are in the cloud already, or should be.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
Ah yes,I see...but I want the numbers back in my internal phonebook...not only in the Google account. And point is that several numbers are not synced for several months,so I loose them if I delete the data and after reboot sync...?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Everything that's in your phone will sync with Google. You need to back your contacts up with Sprite backup or GO CONTACTS. Then follow the steps indicated. See if that works for you.

At worst you could always back them up with a pencil and paper
Couldn't synch contacts...
