Hi all,
Im surprised that there is no proper pc desktop sync program for the HTC android devices.
Im used to backing up everything on my pc such as with Nokia Pc Suite (which is still better than ovi suite in my opinion). Im presuming Samsung, Blackberry all have similar software suites which back up contacts, sms, mms, photos, etc etc.
For legal reasons I need to have backups of my sms messages.
Ive tried using Android Manager (by Mobile Action), but it seems to be very buggy and simple. Also the android manager apk seems to 'hijack' the phone, and not allow selection of disk drive etc.
The only other desktop sync suite I have seen is by Mark/Space, but they dont even have a demo to download to try first!!!
Are there any other programs out there that back up with a viewable GUI that allows you to browse the backed up sms etc
I dont want to backup to a cloud. I need the actual hard copies backed up to the pc for legal reasons. Even better if sms messages could be saved individually in non-editable format.
This is my only gripe with android so far!
Have you tried HTC Sync for Android.
It's available on their website.

Have you tired this application?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=574677
I use to use it with my HTC Hero and haven't got round to trying it on my HTC desire, but this allowed you see texts and write texts via you PC, but you don't do it via USB you do it via WIFI.
Hope this helps and I'll quickly see if it works on mine so I'm not sending you on a goose chase. :
*Update* The applications works, and it also allows you to change the settings on the phone and look at photos you have taken as well as change contact details. ^_^ Going to start using it more now I know it works on the HTC Desire . Hope this helps

Great! will try this 2nyt when I get home. If only HTC put some effort into a desktop suite, not just some crappy backup/sync application.
Thx!
No problem, Yeah I agree that HTC should add some of these features into their software and keep their older phone up-to-date rather than creating new phone, but hey that's common sense I suppose haha.

Which version are you using, I have just installed and after a reboot (of both PC and device) it works really well. The version I used can be found here - http://www.mikesouthby.co.uk/2010/08/how-to-sync-itunes-with-htc-desire-via-htc-sync/
Hi All
I found the HTC Sync 3.0.5387 here
www.rapidshare.com/files/409679123/Setup_3.0.5387.exe
Its the version from the Wildfire.
I have tested this on a XP SP3 / 32 with outlook 2010 / 32bit
Here is what I can say about it.
It will find the desire and even shows the correct picture for it.
It will sync Calendar and I was unable to find any thing that went wrong or i was missing.
It will sync some (NOT All) of my contacts (400+)
However...
I feel the reason HTC has not made it avallbale for us is due to the fact it does not work as expected.
On a re-sync of the contacts (to get the missing ones) it deleted a few (20+) and then added most (200+) a second time on my device.
It also comes up with "not enough memory on device" message on contact sync.
Had 389 contacts and got 260 on my device after deleting all of them on the desire.
I would not recommned that anybody uses it untill they come out with a new version.
If you do then here is an application that will remove your duplicate ones in outlook.
http://accuratesolution.net/AccurateOutlookDuplicateRemover.htm
I found that if you wait until your phone says it's connected and if HTC Sync still doesn't show that if you click the 'Help' button in the top right It shows the sync screen
Tried it. completely hopeless... version 3.0.5422 HTC Sync on HTC Desire. Failed on all attempts, restarted com, restarted phone, plug in plug out.. showed signs of willingness to work but never gets through any stage of the sync and comes out with "Unknown Error Occurred"
for see my desire i must launch the sync
or wait so much
now i restart win for search other good way
sorry to hijack the thread but does anyone know how to schedule how often the updates happen ? the old version had settings that you could configure this but i can't seem to find them ?
Remember to select 'HTC Sync' mode and not USB charge etc?
I had the option to synv Firefox bookmarks but I don't see them on my phone.

Solved!
Uninstalled everything, reboot, install again, reboot. And now it's syncing.
For those downloading from the UK, select Europe 2 as the location to download from. I found Europe 1 crawls along.

HTC Sync 3 5422 is working well and appears much more stable that version 2.
Negatives so far appear that:
1. It won't sync Keepass files. The program syncs other docs on the folder but ignores the Keepass file.
2. It won't allow you to select the folder location to which files are saved on the pc. By default, it stores photos in My Documents > My Photos.

I tried iTunes sync and it worked fine when I asked it to transfer my top rated tunes and they transferred to the phone no problem.
Although I`ve got problems with bookmarks from internet explorer or chrome. Nothing gets transferred?

Actually bookmarks do work, they just import htc bookmarks into chrome as a new folder. then you can add bookmarks to it and re-sync.
Contact and Agenda stay grey!
Hi everybody,
I'm trying to solve a problem for an older college of mine. He is trying to get his HTC desire to sync. No we downloaded the latest HTC 3.0.5422 and it works fine with all the features except the ones he needs for his work. Contacts and Agenda! So if you see the screen they just stay grey and you can't turn them on. Tried pretty much everything and searched a lot of forums but can't seem to find the solution.
In the HTC Sync 2.... had the option of selecting the sync manager so you could select with email program you want the data to sync. But I can't seem to find this function. Or am I looking at the wrong place... Because I read somewhere that you need to open the sync manager to solve this problem but i can't seem to find it.
So any suggestions?

I have just installed Sync 3. Same problems, contacts and agenda stay inactive.
I'm coming from a Nokia 5800. Although the software was buggy as hell, Ovi Suite was still a great piece of software to sync all of my phone's data to a local copy of my PC (as opposed to Google's nosy cloud storage).
Ideally looking for something that could archive my contacts--as well as abilities to create/change/delete on my PC which would then sync with the phone. Also download all SMS's, photos/videos taken, and manage music.
If what I've read is true, google music should take care of this, its supposedly an itunes-like software

Check out Double Twist. There is PC software and an app. Not sure if it would cover all your needs (ive never used it), but it appears to be a decent itunes clone for not just Android but other devices.
theres an app callled mybackup in the market. it will back everything up to the sdcard, then u can copy backup to pc if this helps.
Since people aren't too familiar with Ovi Suite: I need something like Palm Desktop for Android, and I don't want to pay $40 for CompanionLink.
Dude, you need to learn to love the cloud.
From GMail/GMaps/GVoice/GDocks/GCal/Picassa, I have every email, sms, voicememo, picture, video, call history, transcribed voicemail, task, appointment, map location, contact, document, etc. All from any webbrowser in any location, all damn-near instantly synced with my phone.
...but to answer you question, search for HTC Sync. I think it only works with Sense tho, so you will have to wait and flash the Z firmware once the hackers make the g2 flashable.

Dude, I love the cloud.
But I also love having a local copy on my computers (which I back up regularly and save to my Dropbox). Being able to edit contacts and calendar entries without having to bring up a webpage is huge to me.
Different strokes for different folks I guess.
I live and work on the cloud. I never run any backups. I store nothing locally other than 4TB of pirated moves/tv. Being able to access everything from anywhere even if my house has no electricity is huge to me.
What's so bad about opening up a webpage? Opening outlook or whatever doesn't seem any different to me. Unless I am using my computer as a TV, all I ever need from it is a webbrowser, which is nice since every computer and smartphone in the world has one.
I do program ASP.NET/Win32/other and need that dev environment, but that too is all running on a VirtualPC in the cloud.
Not all of us always have constant data access, nor want to depend on it.
Plus, the difference between a webpage and outlook is MASSIVE.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I know this is a pointless argument, but I am curious if you have ever given gmail with gtalk-desktop in your tray a real chance?
I used outlook at a job for work and personal for 6 years, then used outlook for work another 5 while using gmail for personal, and for the last 2 I have been gmail only. I always had the newest version on the newest os, but not in the last 2 years.
In outlook I was always sorting and running a search all was always dog slow. I can find anything in gmail as easily as finding any webpage with google. Gmail integrates with google calendar just as well as outlook and they can sync to eachother. Just sayin.
...anyway, did you look in to HTC Sync? Also, you could always run an exchange server at home and sync over the air.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I'd probably choose services that keep the home PC synced with the cloud, keeping a local copy of what GMail etc use. Enough people do that that there are tools for that, and of course your phone syncs easily with the cloud. I think enough Android users drink the Google kool aid that there's not as much interest in syncing directly phone to PC without using the cloud as an intermediary. After years of wired syncing, I'm thrilled to have it work without any work on my part, personally.
But a search did turn up both The Missing Sync for Android and Handset Manager - both look to still be a bit buggy, but maybe they'll do the job or be worth watching.
We need HTC to make HTC Sync for non-Sense phones. Period.

Totally agree, That's the only way to go, really. When I moved up from my Moto Cliq to the G2 it took all of 5 minutes to get my phone the way I wanted. The hardest part was customizing my icon on the home screen. The data all synced from Google. My list of installed apps was backed up via "App List Backup" and I just re-installed them. Done.
Hello all,
I'm new to the forum and to this site as well.
I just bought the Desire Z and it looks like a nice one
When configure the phone I found an interesting problem that I have no idea how to over come and need your help.
When I sync the phone with my exchange mail in the office it is sync only my inbox and not any other sub folders I created in my mail box, unless I'm going to each one of the sub folders and sync in manually.
In my older phone (Touch pro2) I use to get it done automatically.
Is any one can help me on this ?
Another small question is how I can activate the screen lock on this phone ?
Thanks for speedy answers and sorry if I post it wrongly.
Regards,
Oren

screenlock is in the settings->security...
look in the "mail" settings. you have to select each folder then after that it will autosync. how many folders do you have?
I don't know if their latest HTC ROM update has changed this, but unfortunately the ROM my HTC Desire Z came with (1.34.405.5) can't synchronise other folders automatically. Whilst viewing email you can press menu and select other folders, but it'll download the email then, there's no way to make it do it automatically.
The stock Android email client (which the person above me is talking about) CAN synchronise other folders, but unless you're prepared to change ROMs (or at the very least root it and try and swap in the stock Android mail application) I don't think there's much of a solution.
However, a word of warning which might not make you want to bother, the synchronisation works differently to how it did on Windows Mobile (I previously had a Touch Pro2 as well!): On WM you could set a folder to sync, but only the Inbox would alert/notify, the other folders would just be there ready downloaded whenever you wanted them. However, the stock Android client will sync the extra folders AND alert you whenever new email arrives in them.
To me this was a pain in the neck because I have Exchange sending messages to some folders that I will read later/don't care about when they come in (information messages etc) so of course I have to unsync those folders now because it'll alert me if something goes into them, I only wanted them there ready downloaded for when I wanted to check.
On the plus side the stock app can also "hide" folders from view, but then it also can't move messages to another folder (which the HTC version can!)... If only the mail client had features from both...

Wow ! Thank you so much for such a post !
For me it is kind of a must have as I travel a lot and need to see the mails coming (by the way, on the TP2 there was a green number of mails near each sub folder) and not to sync manually about 25-30 sub folders .
will try to speak to HTC people - I will update of any new ideas

I run IT support for about 95-100 traveling salesmen, almost all of them require mobile email support.
This issue has come up a few times now for IPhones, the way it's corrected with that is by setting the days to sync from the default 3days to no limit. It's not the best fix, as most of these people with this issue are dealing with exchange mailboxes around 5gb's (ceo's and regional managers), so it just eats into the phones space, but it works.
Possibly it will work for androids as well.
I have a tmobile g2, but I use google for mailhosting, exchange support isn't quite ready for any of the big 3 phones (BB iphone and android).

Thanks for this, So there is no answer even not in the market ?
Interesting !
i'm personally hating how exchange simply doesn't work on android, atleast on virtuous ROM for the desire z.
After almost 2 hours of telling it to create an exchange account on my phone and finally be able to create one, I run into a problem that it goes on a refresh spree and spams my notification with the one unread email that I have over and over again until i delete the damn account. I hope hotmail gets their crap together and support imap or atleast get their damn exchange server to work properly.

Hi!
Android should be able to support syncing contacts, calendar and mail over the air as long as you have the name of the exchange server. I found a step-by-step guide that I sent to you in a personal message because I'm to new to post outside links.
If you still want to sync via usb to your pc then try out some apps like DejaOffice from the Market.
Hope this helps
Does anyone know the best prog to back up my sms and contacts and restore seamlessly in my htc one from my desire with no messing about. I tried mybackup but it wont see the backup on the sdcard. Any help would be appreciated .
Contacts i use Google - just needs a quick sign in of your google account and an even quicker sync and your contacts are there ready for you - alot easier than Sim or SD card for me
I have done that but got lots of the same name which means i got to go through them all. The sms migrated ok just the contacts are a pain
do htc devices on first set up not ask if you want to migrate data?
No i cant remember it saying that might need to bluetooth the buggers or something
try
