I just purchased yesterday some shares of Nokia (at 2.79, it seemed a good time to buy). As a Windows Phone believer, I really think that Nokia will turn around, and they will be really successful.
Am I an irrational "fanboi"?
Well your arguments don't sound like the most rational ones out there, but I too think it's a good investment if you can wait atleast for a year or two before selling .
I'm also thinking of buying some And hopefully it will go quite well
I too bought 400 shares as I think in a year or two I'll make a decent return on my investment. I don't see Nokia going away as Microsoft has put a lot of cash in them in hopes of bringing WP7 up to #3. I bought as a long term investment for sure, so time will tell. Good luck to you also, we'll see if we made a good move!
By the way, best advise I can give you is, don't watch the stock daily, let it ride as someone said above, it will take quite some time before it starts to move in a positive direction. Just let it be and wait until WP8 comes out and gets established.you'll drive yourself nuts watching it right now!

Based purely on your post I would have to say "yes."
This is facebook 2.0. I LOVE my Lumia 900. But I also realize Betamax was better than VHS. VHS won. It is not just a matter of having a superior product that I like. You also have to market it.
I can't believe sheeple are still paying $200 for an outdated iphone with no LTE and a 3.5 inch screen. If you want a free contract iphone you will have to make due with the iphone 3gs. That's insane. The iphone 4s is already dated. And people are picking up a phone 3 generations older for the same price as I got a Lumia 900. That is the market place Nokia is playing in. So no I do not believe their success no matter how much I LOVE their product is assured.

Buying with your heart is always a bad investment. Buy for the gain, not the good. Doesn't matter if its rail cars or crystal.

Well, obviously historical decline is not a reason not to buy, more like the other way around.
The stock hasn't bottomed out yet. Nokia also mentioned they're likely to face more quarters of operating at a lost, and the smartphone business is only part of their business.
Nokia has also been downgraded to junk status, as no one believes that they will be able to repay their loans.
I've been thinking about buying, but I'm betting it'll go lower. I'm holding out until right before the major launches.

This is what people were saying last year when Nokia was trading over $7 a share...
That advice led to a >50% loss. "Cheap shares" can get cheaper. I need more information than that before a stock becomes a buy.
With Nokia value approaching net value of its patent portfolio and cash on hand, this seems like the time to buy if you believe in NOK's upside.
The downside risks are:
They burn all cash while in recovery mode and go bankrupt
WP7 doesn't increase sales to return them to future relevance
My take is that the cash issue is a non-issue. Even with their credit rating as junk, intuition says that NOK will have free access to cheap cash loans from someone with lots of cash and a vested interest in their success: Microsoft
The WP7 upshot is the big question mark, but the grass roots indicators are telling me that WP7 will be that catalyst, given time. Since time = money for NOK and MSFT has the money, this seems non-issue, as well.
The "doomsday" scenario is if NOK's market cap goes so cheap as to make a hostile acquisition enticing. Then you could see IP desperate Google or another maker stepping in to try to eat them up. In that case, I don't think MSFT would let that happen, either. Net-net of this scenario is that NOK's value gets run up in a bidding war, which I don't think MSFT would let be lost.
Either way, as a long term hold, NOK seems cheap.

No one is saying NOK is safe - far from it. But if you are looking at a long term bet with big upside due to ambiguity, there are worse bets.
I bought $2K of NOK a few weeks ago knowing full well it could be zero. I considered it like buying a lotto ticket, fully understand it could be worth nothing or that NOK could be at $10+ in a year.

Over here in the US if all you want to do is trade stocks E*trade or Ameritrade are okay. I heard Fidelity is good as well. Choose a reputable firm and then see what pricing is like for your trading strategy. Your choice of broker will definitely vary depending on how often you trade.

Went into a Verizon corporate store in NYC for an unrelated issue today (troubles with my Bionic) and while I was there I had a talk with one of the managers. I was able to convince him to sell me the official Verizon Galaxy Nexus Shell/Holster combo case early. He also showed me two other cases (one silicone and one high gloss) and said that there will also be screen protectors, batteries, and a dock although they don't have them in stock yet.
But more importantly I asked him for info about the release date after I purchased the case. He told me that literally a few minutes before I came in he received and was reading a notice from Verizon HQ that the official date has been set as of this morning and confirmed for December 8th. He stated that it will be available for purchase online and in all stores as of that date. He also went on to say that Verizon has planned a marketing campaign for the Galaxy Nexus starting this Friday (expect to see plenty of ads soon). I was also able to get confirmation from him that the phone will come with the My Verizon Mobile app and one other Verizon essential app preinstalled. Unfortunately, this is all he was allowed to disclose to me without "getting himself in trouble" but I would say that's pretty nice of him to confirm this. I hope you guys find this info useful. Here is a pic of the case below:

First, stop being a douchebag to everybody. Nobody laughs at it and it makes you look like an uneducated brute.
Secondly, thank you OP for filling in the forum. Whether it's true or not will still have to be seen, as many other Verizon employees still say they have no clue, but it's still nice of you to tell everyone what you know...especially with the hostility on this forum, as of late.
Guess this works out for me...my credit card cycle recycles on the 7th and I had to buy $1000 of tires and $1000 of Christmas gifts this month. Guess this is God's way of telling me to save some money!
I hope this is really the date, I heard this also, as many of you. If course it would be nice to have it sooner but, if not; it's nice to have an actual date.

My car's brand new but I need winter performance tires (they come with summer-only performance) which came out to around $250 a piece. 235x40 are kind of expensive.
Gonna need to buy summer wheels in the spring too =P another $1500 down the drain, but worth it so I don't have to change over the tires every other season and re-balance. Much easier just to change the wheels myself.

Ya, these weren't even amazing. They're Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3. I was going to go with the new Dunlop Winter Sport 3Ds, but I got a $70 rebate on these Michelins lol so couldn't pass them up. Only one more purchase and I'll be set on wheels/tires for the next few years. The car's only 6 months old, so still have a few "new-car" purchases that must be made.
Strange thing, though, with the way 4G LTE works. I have a Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE that sits on my desk at work. I get 2-3 bars of 4G service with it (connection speeds varies between 16/2Mbps up to around 30/12Mbps) sitting there on my desk. Another guy on my team bought the Rezound today and, standing right in front of my desk, it had no 4G and only 2 bars of 3G. I'm hoping that the Nexus has a better signal reach than the Rezound.
Then again, he admitted he already installed Juice Defender and there's a possibility it turned off 4G. He didn't look closely, but he didn't remember setting anything specifically for it. Maybe he had it off! Who knows. Just hoping I retain a 4G signal there at my desk. The company wifi is a bit tricky in certain places in the building, so being able to fall back on faster 4G is pretty nice (I don't even have my Galaxy Tab hooked up to the wifi anymore).

Reminds me of a report I read recently about why the patent system is in such a mess, in particular in the USA.
You may well be correct, but as it stands, there is a lot of $$$"s to be made patenting ideas and later taking legal action against companies/people that use a similar idea.
If this is just an idea, and can be patented, that is just unfair, no?
So basically, I can simply sleep to dream something and patent it .. Like I will patent Water Fueled Battery ... Or Oxygen Cell Battery .. And draw something imaginary equipment.
Is that it?
My goodness me ...

A patent is not as much an idea as it is a method or procedure to achieve an objective. Others can apply for patents on hydrogen fuel cells in mobile devices as long as there is a material difference in the method or procedure in which the objective is obtained by contrast to what Apple is filing. And while Apple may have filed these claims, there is no guarantee they will be approved. We do not know who else has filed similar applications before Apple a.k.a. prior art or whether or not Apple's claims are too broad/obvious.
Just a PR stunt, get over it. Good time to publish "news" like this as it's otherwise relatively quiet on the news front.

Most of the people lost the clue what patents really are for.
Imagine if the light bulb wasn't invented till tomorrow and apple would hold a patent for glass object that produces light (put more complex description if you wish) before It was actually produced by someone. Who should really hold the patent here?
Apple or person that made the lightbulb?
If you can't implement your idea in real life and just have it on the paper you should not have rights to it.
How many theories were wrong on the paper? Make it happen get a prototype or something....
Plain piece of paper with a description of how something is going to work or explaining the purpose is not going to change our lives... I fair enough it speeds up the invention cos people have to work around it but still its not fair...
Same goes to design patents... If something is common as a frigging loaf of bread it should not be patented... Aka design of portable device with a touch screen and a button (or not)

We won't see this in phone until at least 2020. Even that's an early date.

The idea has been around for longer than I can remember, but yeah implementation just isn't practical right now. I mean the big car companies haven't been able to make it anywhere near practical or economical for cars yet, so scaling to something like a phone is a long long way off.
I also find it funny how they propel these ideas as if they are going to save us from the mass energy problem we have. You still need to 'charge' these cells - all they are is a clean storage mechanism. You still need to generate the energy somehow - so that paragraph in that news story from the patent just makes me laugh.
If anyone is still under any illusion this is going to happen 'soon' read this:

Hey Everyone... Originally when I got my GNEX, I could have sworn that when I tried to unlock/root it, it had been easier than a lot of the instructions, but I didn't think too much about it at the time. (I got it directly from a VZW wireless store) I think at this point, it was already unlocked. Now that I've changed phones, I wanted to prep this one for selling, and I was trying to follow instructions on how to reset/relock the phone, but it doesn't seem to let me lock it with the fastboot oem lock commands... but if this is an engineering build, should I even bother? Or can I sell it as is and just state factory unlocked?
Here is an image of my "About Phone" after flashing back the google images that I downloaded from here: https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/mysid-icl53f-factory-65895fa8.tgz

Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask, but I tried -looking- for a factory unlocked CDMA version to judge it against, and can't even seem to find any, am I just missing something? Are people selling them somewhere else?
You won't find a "Factory Unlocked" model, AFAIK they don't make them. What you have is somewhat unique, although not that useful since it's a Nexus device. If you want more info on what exactly you have this thread has a decent overview if you read the first 2 pages: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1461386 Bottom line, your fine to sell it as is.
To the right person you will get more just because it is an engineering model! If I were you I would bank on that!!

I thought about that too when I first read the post. But, since this is a Nexus device to begin with, does that really get you anything?
I doubt it gets you anything but I want one lol. I'd pay maybe $20 more than a normal one but beyond that I'd get a stock. Someone may want it just to have it like me though.

Will do. Kinda bummed about the selling prices in general, haven't been able to decide what to list it for. Gonna throw it up with no reserve and see what happens.
Put rare and what not in it.

If its rare people will pay, just due to the fact that no one else can get it.
I personally am the type of person you want to sell this to. I buy tons of stuff for hundreds more just because I collect tech.
***Speaking of which, if anyone knows someone that owns an original 20gb PS3 I am looking to spend $400 or more depending on condition. Been looking for 3 years. Also looking for a copy of Super Metroid for SNES, I`ll pay $60 with out box, $100 in box***
Anyways yeah, if I didn`t already own a Galaxy Nexus and was not in the process of looking for a Galaxy S2 White (perferably from France to use here in Canada) I`d pay around $800 easy.

I hadn't thought of it from a collectors point of view, I was thinking purely in terms of a developer. fiyawerx, maybe you should at least look for an alternative market? Maybe Adreno knows some other collectors?

No I don't sorry.
Only reason I threw out the $800 number is because, really its not that much more you'd pay buying a "normal" phone really.
I still remember paying something like $700 after tax for the Xperia x10 (ouch bad device) and another $700 for the Xperia Arc (Better device but still too much IMO)
$800 is not that big of a jump, and you are getting something truly unique.
***On a side note: I bought the Xperia x10 and my wife's first iphone, the white 3GS the same day...I think the total was like $1400. Imagine my surprise learning my brand new "latest tech" android didn't support multitouch....mmm still feel that burn! Oh well I guess 2 finger touch ended up being supported later, but by then I was on the Samsung Captivate. Loved the Captivate!***

Used daily for about 3 weeks daily, with a screen protector installed @ verizon when I bought it. Somehow it still managed to get a tiny line in it near the front camera in the upper right... you have to have the light hit it just right to see it, I tried getting it in the pictures here but could not. I took the screen protector off now to show how clean the real screen is, there's some dust on it though.
The pictures came out a bit too big that I'd want to post here, you can see them here:

So I decided to write a complaint about Samsung to the BBB.
To make a really long story short. I received a GN with bad color. Had to fix myself and a month later after having it, it just died! Sent in for repair. I was told it would be repaired by June 27 and then shipped out. Received a email today stating "Please be advised that your Samsung service ticket [4115*****] has been placed on a temporary hold due to an unavailable part.
As soon as the part becomes available, your device will be repaired and shipped promptly"
I called Samsung AGAIN and they won't do ****.
So I am complaining and won't be a customer of Samsung again. WOW!!
Any success with this route? Trying to get a refund, don't want their crap back!

If you research a bit about Samsung's practices then you'd find out that it's one of the biggest piece of **** corporations in the world. It has been since the very beginning. And it's definitely not limited to cell phones. Problem is, they're a mammoth and manufacture awesome displays for low prices so that means that they'll be on top for a long time. Hundreds of thousands of complaints world wide and hardly ever a single **** was given.
Bottom line is, wait for the phone to get fixed and delivered to you. Good luck.
Let's hope the next Nexus phone isn't gonna be manufactured by them. Again.

No... brmayhem is spot on. Samsung sucks and they don't care about their customers at all. They spent so much energy ripping off Apple, but they missed Apple's strongest and most redeeming quality: Their customer service.
Samsung blows. Nothing you do will ever get through to them. All you can do is use a different phone, use the repaired Nexus and flash a kernel like Trinity to fix the color issues, and wait until December and hope the next Nexus device is manufactured by a different company.

How would they spend so much money "ripping off Apple?" They've had these designs WAY before Apple iOS with BadaOS. Get your facts straight.

1: I said they spent a lot of ENERGY... not money
2: Don't start this. It's well known, well documented, and spread all over the internet that Touchwiz had some design elements that were direct rip-offs of iOS. Even the faux-metal band around the Galaxy phones were a nod to the first three iPhones.

How come the Iphone on the right looks a little different?
Most large companies do not care about customers. They care about profits. Apple is no exception. People think because customer service slaps on a pretty face and a smile that the company cares.
Simply not true. I can remove the word Samsung on the above hate-filled rants and it would be true.
Ford...Chevrolet...Apple...HP....Dell...Sony... the list is a mile long.
People say stuff like this all the time, but people on the other end are human beings too. Your own presentation goes a long way in getting things done. If you are difficult, they will be difficult too. If you are a douche...guess what? So are they.
I can give you a TON of HP customer service nitemares on the internet. I can even relate to the OP with my own computer with HP. I could surrender and fling my hands up in the air and say they wouldn't help me. Instead I stayed firm, yet civil and respectful.
End result? My computer which kept being postponed for repair due to part shortage was actually replaced with a brand new machine. The cost? Me being a human being and not an animal.
I am not saying the OP is, but it is hard to see how you really are acting by looking in the mirror. Have a neutral party hang out with you when you call Samsung sometime and see if maybe your attitude is less than appropriate.

We're not "going there". I'm simply using the image to support my assertion that Samsung wasted a lot of time and energy copying Apple's design but didn't copy their excellent customer service and warranty.
That's where it ends really. I'm not here because I want to defend Apple. I like tech/gadgets/consumer electronics. I'm not an Apple fanboy, nor am I an Android fanboy; I'm just a techie - a fanboy of all electronics - and I have had nothing but terrible experiences with Samsung products.
There's an obvious difference between bringing a defective device into a store and having it replaced on the spot, and calling a call center across the world to make arrangements to ship it out (paying the shipping yourself), waiting a week or two (maybe longer) and getting the same device back with the same issues.
...and yet I own a Series 5 550 and a Galaxy Nexus. I bought them and use them every day because they run the Google operating systems I want to use. There is no brand loyalty here...

In what context are you saying that Samsung copied Apple's design? since this is the "Galaxy Nexus forum." If you're implying that Samsung copied their design for TouchWiz, I don't see any TouchWiz being featured on stock Galaxy Nexus.
I think most of us are simply having the problem that you're straight up bashing the company in a inappropriate manner regardless of how "angry" you may be. It's kind of unacceptable to be swearing and pointing fingers directly at Samsung because I haven't had a bad experience with their customer service at all.
If you're having phone defects, you should deal with Verizon first. My Galaxy Nexus is from Negri Electronics (third party vendor) and they offer great customer service as well as Expansys. So I can't comment on Verizon.

Swearing? Really?
I've explained my comment twice already.
Only customers who purchase the phone subsidized through Verizon can get a refurbished unit as a replacement if there is a problem with the device after the 14-day grace period. If you buy the phone used, you have to go through Samsung.
Also, getting several replacements in a row with the same defect is defeating and really says something about a company.
Please remove yourself from Samsung's ****.
Aw gee whiz, Beav... sorry for swearing again!

That sounds like a personal problem with your carrier (or the store you've purchased it from), not the manufacturer of the phone. Yeah, there are defective units out on the market... but your carrier is the one who made the policy on 'refurbished units' as replacements.

This is actually great news. It kills the second-hand market for unscrupulous sellers to sell potentially dangerous devices that could result in injuries or property damage. It's both morally-responsible and a protective measure by Samsung to reduce liability exposure. Now people are forced to return their old phones unless they want a $900 wifi device.

After reading this article it is Samsung, not Verizon, doing this deactivation. Is that even possible? Is it normal for device manufacturers to be able to reach out and brick all of their devices? Because just shutting down the radio portion of the phone ain't gonna stop people from using it on WiFi and charging them. They must brick them. Never heard of such a thing before...:good:
If I choose to not get a recall in my car, can Ford shut me down legally? Is that good? Being careful what we wish for to be legal and good has a funny way of becoming the norm across every aspect of our lives....
I think this is a feign.....

In the case of stolen phones, it's usually it's the carriers who report lists of stolen IMEIs to GSMA so that they can deny service for a device with a bad IMEI. I don't think it will necessarily brick your device, just turn it into a wifi-only device if it's not locked some other way.
In the Note 7 case, given that potentially lives and property damage are at risk, it's certainly possible that Samsung can provide a list of all IMEIs to GSMA produced before their fixed batches and have them deactivate them en masse. Especially if this is done in conjunction with the CSPC.
Depending on which side of the fence you sit on with respect to personal accountability it could be a good or bad thing. Personally, I think this is a good thing and morally-responsible as I mentioned above. There is really no point in continuing to use a potential time bomb when you can easily return the phone (and if you're a poor soul who brought it second-hand or via eBay, Swappa, etc., its a life-lesson). In litigation-crazy American society where people are not accountable for their personal well-being and can sue at will, Samsung really has no choice but to resort to the nuclear option to protect themselves against liability, or in this case "acts of darwinism." In your example, Ford probably can't legally shut you down but I'm sure they would have clauses in their recall notices indemnifying them in case some owners refuse to fix their cars (withing a certain time frame) and kill themselves and others as well, esp. if the recalls are in conjunction with the Feds.

Thank you. If you take out probably, I totally agree. This is why the unsubstantiated link above, which references nothing but their own speculation, appears to be a feign. Right or wrong, good or bad, certainly smells like a feign dipped in rumor.
Sure, get the phone replaced. But a global brick wall? I don't buy it... Anything less than a total brick job will not suffice.
This is a rumor, take with a big grain of salt. Just another he said, she said hearsay from misinformed people.

If you were still using a potentially defective phone and it burned down your house and you were the only one in it, then it's purely your fault and only affects you. In which case I couldn't give a crap as that's your typical "act of darwinism." But if my 3-year old and wife were next door and the fire crossed into my house and they got hurt then yes I would give a crap and it is someone else's problem. I would be asking myself WTF was that idiot still using the phone after a recall has been issued and why was he even allowed to keep it.
You need to re-prioritize your life if keeping and using a damn phone that's been recalled is really that important to you (instead of just getting a refund to switch to another phone or buy a replacement) or if you seriously think politics plays a role in this.

In other news....guess his family wished they would've returned the phone or that it was bricked...

I just got a firmware update from Verizon that tells you if you have a defective battery Note 7. Now it notifies me to power down
