Hey Everyone... Originally when I got my GNEX, I could have sworn that when I tried to unlock/root it, it had been easier than a lot of the instructions, but I didn't think too much about it at the time. (I got it directly from a VZW wireless store) I think at this point, it was already unlocked. Now that I've changed phones, I wanted to prep this one for selling, and I was trying to follow instructions on how to reset/relock the phone, but it doesn't seem to let me lock it with the fastboot oem lock commands... but if this is an engineering build, should I even bother? Or can I sell it as is and just state factory unlocked?
Here is an image of my "About Phone" after flashing back the google images that I downloaded from here: https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/mysid-icl53f-factory-65895fa8.tgz

Should this be ok to sell in this state? My plan was to ebay it, but I don't want to get in any trouble.

Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask, but I tried -looking- for a factory unlocked CDMA version to judge it against, and can't even seem to find any, am I just missing something? Are people selling them somewhere else?
You won't find a "Factory Unlocked" model, AFAIK they don't make them. What you have is somewhat unique, although not that useful since it's a Nexus device. If you want more info on what exactly you have this thread has a decent overview if you read the first 2 pages: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1461386 Bottom line, your fine to sell it as is.
To the right person you will get more just because it is an engineering model! If I were you I would bank on that!!

I thought about that too when I first read the post. But, since this is a Nexus device to begin with, does that really get you anything?
I doubt it gets you anything but I want one lol. I'd pay maybe $20 more than a normal one but beyond that I'd get a stock. Someone may want it just to have it like me though.

Will do. Kinda bummed about the selling prices in general, haven't been able to decide what to list it for. Gonna throw it up with no reserve and see what happens.
Put rare and what not in it.

If its rare people will pay, just due to the fact that no one else can get it.
I personally am the type of person you want to sell this to. I buy tons of stuff for hundreds more just because I collect tech.
***Speaking of which, if anyone knows someone that owns an original 20gb PS3 I am looking to spend $400 or more depending on condition. Been looking for 3 years. Also looking for a copy of Super Metroid for SNES, I`ll pay $60 with out box, $100 in box***
Anyways yeah, if I didn`t already own a Galaxy Nexus and was not in the process of looking for a Galaxy S2 White (perferably from France to use here in Canada) I`d pay around $800 easy.

I hadn't thought of it from a collectors point of view, I was thinking purely in terms of a developer. fiyawerx, maybe you should at least look for an alternative market? Maybe Adreno knows some other collectors?

No I don't sorry.
Only reason I threw out the $800 number is because, really its not that much more you'd pay buying a "normal" phone really.
I still remember paying something like $700 after tax for the Xperia x10 (ouch bad device) and another $700 for the Xperia Arc (Better device but still too much IMO)
$800 is not that big of a jump, and you are getting something truly unique.
***On a side note: I bought the Xperia x10 and my wife's first iphone, the white 3GS the same day...I think the total was like $1400. Imagine my surprise learning my brand new "latest tech" android didn't support multitouch....mmm still feel that burn! Oh well I guess 2 finger touch ended up being supported later, but by then I was on the Samsung Captivate. Loved the Captivate!***

Used daily for about 3 weeks daily, with a screen protector installed @ verizon when I bought it. Somehow it still managed to get a tiny line in it near the front camera in the upper right... you have to have the light hit it just right to see it, I tried getting it in the pictures here but could not. I took the screen protector off now to show how clean the real screen is, there's some dust on it though.
The pictures came out a bit too big that I'd want to post here, you can see them here:

Just wanted to make you guys aware that the battery door for the i9250 does NOT fit the i515 for Verizon.
I bought two from the link listed below to use on the two Galaxy Nexii in my house to get rid of the awful Verizon branding and was unable to get either of them to clip onto the phone properly. Only a few of the pins just do not quite line up in the exact same position and appear to have a different design that doesn't clip properly.

What's really sad is the texture of the i9250 door is a much softer touch, much more noticeable than on the i515. I mean, it really feels like something worth bragging about like Samsung did at their Unpacked presentation when they originally announced the phone.
Also, I notified the seller of my mistake and requested a refund and instead he said I could keep them and he was just credit me what I paid minus shipping. He definitely got 5-star feedback and highly recommend him, even though the items he sells take longer to arrive from China.
Sigh, Samsung should of just made the god damn GSM version identical in form factor and just put in a bigger battery.
All this fragmentation in hardware just makes everyone's life more difficult in finding accessories as well.
For those interested, I found the following three sellers that list a battery door without the Verizon branding that specifically states that it is for the i515 and not the i9250.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ORIGINAL-Ba...503?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item256a9a083f
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SAMSUNG-GAL...946801?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item48419544b1
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-ba...225?pt=Batteries_Chargers&hash=item1c1da723c9
I contacted the three of them and all of them confirmed that it indeed for the i515 as they have separate parts which are internally labeled as "i9250" inside the door itself whereas these specifically show "i515" on them. I bought two and was told I can return them if they don't fit. I'm hoping they do and they have that smooth feeling I really liked. I'll update this post after I get them.
Wow you must really hate VZ if you're willing to pay $20 for a flimsy piece of plastic.

From the pictures, it looks like it won't fit. Because at the bottom they have 3 clips like the one in the op has which (if I read correctly) doesn't fit.
Now if only they made a non branded extended battery cover. That'd be great. My case covers up the back for now though. I'll be fine for now. I definitely was hoping to hear the GSM back fit the LTE back.
I thought i read somewhere (cant remember the android site) that you could use a x-acto knife and cut the extra tab's and it will fit?
If you do try this would you let us know if it does fit then?
I would love to get one and do it then.

I just received the back covers that are specifically manufactured for the i515 from one of the Chinese sellers I listed earlier. I can confirm with much disappointment again, that these also do not fit properly. They are certainly closer, but there is still one tab on both sides that is in the wrong place and causes the case not to clip properly. I did try shaving these clips off to get it to fit and while it does now, one of the sides has about a half-mm of give to it since the hole for the clip is now empty and not holding the door in place.
Color me disappointed.
Edit: I reached out to the seller and he has already gotten back to me. He has told me that he now carrier 3 (three) different battery doors for the Galaxy Nexus and is requesting I send him pictures of my original door for comparison to send me out the correct one. Third time's a charm?
Dang hopefully this one will work

Hardware fragmentation? Are you serious?
You do realize that part of the increased form factor is due to the LTE radio correct? And that adding a battery doesn't create the same form factor?
Its a business decision. Plain and simple. Does it make sense to drop more money to fit ALL the units with 1850 mAh battery? Not really. The GSM radios does not drain as heavy as the LTE, so why do it?
The different between a 1750 mAh battery and 1850 is barely anything and not worth screwing up the form factor of the smaller device.
You don't get your cake and get to eat it too.

HUGE thanks to OP!!! Found this post moments before buying the white i9250 back for my VZ Nexus. *phew!* Dodged a bullet. =)
I'm hoping the dude I quoted is joking or just a troll... if there's seriously anybody out there that is buying a back with an enormous Google logo on it as well as a Samsung logo, but still feels that now their device is "unbranded" b/c it merely has both the hardware manufacturer and OS manufacturer adverts, but NOT the carrier logo... Well, try Googling hypocrite or retard.

How are you going to thank me and then indirectly insult me in the same post?
Back on topic, I got a message back from the eBay seller. He was apparently waiting to hear back from his Samsung supplier for an answer to the same questions I had and did not receive a response. He, like the previous seller, agreed to refund my payment in full. He also said he would contact me once he received any more info about the other back covers they have or will have available soon.
So the hunt continues! I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Hey all I said was it won't say Verizon on it.
Hey guys, I have been jumping around android phones for the last 2 years as I buy and sell them. Anyways I found a gnex on my local Craigslist for sale with a tiny crack in the screen by the power button.. The guy only wants a 100 bucks for it. The rest of the phone is clean and the esn is clear. And the phone is 100% usable as is. My only problem is i cant find a replacement screen assembly for under 200. I am used to paying upwards of 100 for other screen assemblies I have replaced. But over 200 makes it better to just buy a used phone.
So the only reason I want this phone is because I can use it as is for a while until I can get the cash for a replacement screen. But still 200 bucks is hard to swallow.
What say you guys?

Unless it's free, I'd never buy something damaged off the bat. Just save for money for a new one. I did that ones and it ended up costing more then a new one .. and it was never perfect like a new one.
That's the price. Digitizer and screen are one piece so that's why the price is high.
doesn't sound like a bad deal to me, make sure the phone works well then when you do get around to changing the screen out save the one with the hairline as a backup in case you ever shatter the new one. At least you could use the nexus while waiting for the money for the screen.
Pony up $100 more and you can have a new one from google with warranty. $399 from the play store for GSM galaxy nexus.

I just sold my cracked GN for more than $100 and I still think that is a good deal. You cant feel or really see the cracks when the screen is turned on. The phone works and feels perfect, just doesn't look good. I think it's a great opportunity for a young dev or someone with out a lot funds to pick up a fully functional newest Nexus for a fraction of the new cost. Don't even bother fixing the screen. Save that money for the next nexus and enjoy the cracked one for now.
I got mine off cl... $380 with only a few cosmetic noticeable scratches. Mostly near usb port. I wanted unlimited 4g!

Your the 2nd person to say that so I man see if they will fix it for me.
And I think I am going to go get the phone on Monday as soon as I get back from a weekend trip.
I am stoked to be a gnex owner. My thunderbolt was good to me but she has seen better days. Thanks for your help guys.

Update-
I drove over and go the phone today. It's like brand new. A tiny crack that is only visible when the screen is off and a tiny 2mm crack on the bezel. Other then that the phone is like brand new. The guy said that he wanted a iPhone and so he never bothered fixing the gnex.
He wanted 100 but I ended up talking him to 70 because I had to drive 30 miles. He even threw in 2 charges and a case and a screen protector.
I have to go to verizon tomorrow to get a new sim card because my thunderbolt uses the bigger card. So tomorrow I will be up and running.
I am so stoked on my find. And should i ever want to get it fixed. Samsung told me it's 160 to get the screen fixed. So I could have a brand new nexus for for 230 total.. Or a nexus with a tiny crack that is pretty much unnoticeable for 70. I am just stoked all around.

I just bought a Gnexus from ebay for £116 with a crack in, I think its a great deal. I had a budget of about £200 ( im a student, crappy androids price), moved from webos to the best android and i've saved money, im absolutely in love with the purchase and maybe when the screen annoys me I'll see if prices have lowered and buy a new one (might even mod it touchstone compatible. If anybody is thinkig is is it worth buying a cracked one, I say yes, top of the range phone for very cheap!
I found an offer in Croatia, also cracked GNex (picture in attachments).
So, the owner says that the phone is still fully functional, just the glass is cracked. My question would be, if it's really only the glass how much would it cost me to buy a replacement glass from ebay and is it posible to change it by myself (newbie!)?
Idk the cost of them but they do look fairly difficult mainly getting the digitizer out that's cracked and replacing it. I've done a wide selection of repairs and digitizers just tend to be the hardest thing on most devices. But hey with patience and steady hands its possible

I just read this on CNET News:
CNET has confirmed that the phone will be a modified version of the Optimus G. Other handset manufacturers could also release their own Nexus phones as well. The phone will be announced at the end of the month, according to a person briefed on the matter. While it will run some of the same specifications as the Optimus G, it will be modified to fit into the Nexus program. Google and LG haven't yet come up with a name for the product.
Like the Optimus G, the phone is expected to come with Qualcomm's Snapdragon quad-core processor, 2 gigabytes of RAM, a 1,280x768 True-High Definition IPS display, an 8-megapixel camera, and a nonremovable battery. It will also have no microSD slot and only 8GB to 16GB of internal storage, according to Modaco.

So, it looks like the 5 manufacturers for next Nexus project are Samsung, LG, HTC, Sony and Asus (tablet)?

I don't see how is a rumor, when is "confirmed". CNET will not post things like that just for fun.
Unless I win the lottery, not getting it so, good luck guys.
More disappointed about the overall Nexus program's movement towards anyone can make one.

I like the idea. If each manufacturer had a Nexus phone we could choose from whichever brand or tech we prefer, rather than stuck with whatever luck of the draw.
Wow Google, why would you let LG make this, sorry not buying the next nexus, this ones my fav right now
Unless they come out with a Samsung or Motorola nexus, I will be keeping my GN

Development will be split miserably IMO, which is the main reason I don't like it.
Not to mention, I enjoyed one Nexus phone being the top dog in terms of reference for all Android devices
If it's a non-expandable 16GiB, count me out.
Non-replaceable battery just makes it worse.

Google is done putting SDcards in phones. Get used to it.
As for battery, I guess I understand some people want that ability, but I've never removed the battery in my phone to replace it or anything like that... If they can keep the phone thin with a large battery, and keeping it sealed helps them do that (it does), then I'm completely OK with it.

Why hate on lg? I really don't get it. They seem to have high end device with currently probably the best hw out or coming out.
I don't have any bias hardware wise to a OEM myself. If anything Samsung has annoyed me with their source code crap. Htc as well. Moto and their damn locked bootloaders. And moto not updating a one year old device with a dual core to ICS. I kinda hope none of those OEMS get a nexus device on principal.

If the stock battery was great, by all means, seal it in, I don't care.
I'm glad the GNex wasn't sealed though.
-Brought to you by Marino's Galaxy Nexus-
I would really like the option of a removable battery. I don't care how big a non removable one is. Things happen and I would like a spare so if it dies or you're away from a charger you can swap it out.
Or until batteries can magically recharge in 5 mins
What happens when you get a sod and you need a battery pull?....anyways it'll be nice to have multiple nexus devices....the only thing I'm not a fan of on my gnex is the sampled screen.....its nice and vibrant but can be cartoony IMHO....I feel IPS is a good balance of screen types.....but other than that I'll wait to see what else come out......I had a gx2 and I thought it was a well made piece of hardware but with closed source code on drivers and such ICS never really ran properly....but cm7 was slick!!!

Devices with no removable battery will have a button combo (or a very long press on the power button) that does a hard reboot of the device. You don't need a removable battery. Google wouldn't make a Nexus that couldn't be reset in a bootloop or freeze.

There is one piece of information left out that applies to us all;
the next round of OTA updates begin to run 4.2.x soon after it goes on sale and who knows even the nexus s might get it too

I love the DNA but I also love having the latest HTC available, how many of y'all will be considering doing whatever you have to in your situation to get your hands on this phone? I wish I could say I'll stay content with my DNA, I just remember saying that about the rezound and incredible lte.

I'm not dropping my DNA but I'm for sure getting the One.
I'd like to say I'm considering the HTC one, but not sure I'd consider it on Verizon. Id honestly like to see them come out with a smaller screen, like 4.3", with some decent hardware specs. Just not feeling the larger screens anymore.
I like the HTC One for sure, but I don't know if it's enough of a jump over the DNA to warrant the change. I'm still on unlimited data, so I'm going to need to buy my next phone outright, and I think it might be worth waiting for next year's HTC flagship since the DNA is still so awesome.
Pretty sure they will come out with DNA 2 in November. Just my hunch
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using XDA Premium HD app
I plan on getting it at some point, I just know it won't be at a subsidised price. I'd like to keep my DNA but the cheapest way for me to get the One will be rapid exchanging it at best buy until they junk it out cause I know they don't have too many DNA refurbs lying around (worked for bb until recently, I know my way around Geek squad plans). I would've waited for the one (just upgraded to DNA in April) if I didn't have that contingency in place. Still think the DNA is a great phone, I wouldn't mind or be surprised if another one showed up on the fall but with an even bigger screen (which is what kept me away from this one so long).
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 2
There's NO comparison between the DNA and the one. The one blows the DNA away in every aspect especially speed and efficiency. I run mine overclocked to 2.1GHz an still get 1/3 more battery life than my DNA at stock clock speeds. Screen is brighter, phone is thinner, cameras are better, DEVELOPMENT is better (because it's cross carrier), speakers are WAAAAAY louder and have depth..... get the one
It's actually crossed my mind to sell my DNA and pick this up.. I have to sell the DNA because I can't afford a retail purchase without the cash from the DNA .. I could always just add a line and upgrade.. but not sure that would be a viable option ... Still waiting on the retail cost.. Will it be the same as other carriers with the One you think?

I'd guess around 650-700 retail. I cant remember if the DNA was 650 or 699, but I was thinking the One was slightly cheaper when it launched.
I should add to my above comment in the second post, it's likely I'll get the ATT version of the One, because of the development with the GSM versions. I carry an ATT and Verizon device in my pocket, so it may end up being One and DNA as my daily drivers.
You guys interested in the One, you can sell really old smartphones like the Wildfire, Blackberry Curve, Incredible, etc for $100 a piece in ATT gift cards.

Just think, the first time I paid full retail for a phone and the first time I have ever damaged a device were about a week apart. Yeap, I busted my $700 device when it was a week old, I was sick.
I was really scared to tell my girlfriend as she bought it for me for Valentines Day. But when I finally told her she was like "Baby really? The phone, you're that upset about a phone? I thought you got a little girl pregnant or something, you really had me scared."
Don't get me wrong, the One is an amazing phone, but I would rush off the DNA. Its still a powerful device, and in my opinion the One isn't a huge enough leap for me to rush to get it. .02$

lol they are the same phone. the one only has a sightly faster cpu out of the box and diffrent speaker placement. .... both phones have independent amps a similar shape, similar components, similar software (they even have a rom if you like blinkfeed).... 200 mhz faster big whoop, is not like you cant oc it to 1.7... its silly to buy one if you got a dna..... its like throwing away or trading in a black 2012 Tahoe for a silver 2013 Tahoe (its the same exact truck).. if you had like a gs3 or a razr or something older it makes sense to wait a lil bit and buy it instead of the dna cuz it is the newest phone.

You can't assume that features like those you mentioned are the only thing important to everyone. It's kind of like assuming that everyone who buy's a device plans to talk on it. We are far from the average or typical consumers and there's way more than a few hundred mhz to our purchasing decisions.
I'm not saying you are right or wrong, I'm just saying that you should consider with an open mind that a lot of people could care less about the specs on the side of the box and put the emphasis on something dev related when making purchases. It's like saying everyone cares about battery life. Or nobody likes HTC Sense. There's a wide variety of people, ideas, and personalities in the development community that the standard consumer rules don't apply too.
You have to also remember that the reason we have Android devlopers on new devices is because they were stupid enough to buy a new device that was only a slight upgrade above the old one.
Off Topic: I spent three days with a GS4 and wasn't impressed with it at all.

The wife needs a new phone and since we have an upgrade available I was thinking of giving her my Gnex and getting myself a new phone.
Naturally I first though GS4 but Im starting to wonder. Is that an upgrade, downgrade or lateral move? I realize its newer hardware, but the Gnex seems to have a good development base behind it....not sure about the GS4 (havent really checked).
Or should I just try to find a decent used Gnex for the wife too? I love mine, the fact its so stable on just about any ROM is what makes me feel comfortable enough to give it to her. I know she wont ever have any issues with it (her current Stratosphere is a total POS!)
Thanks.
-Chris
S4 is a gigantic upgrade. Do not even think for a second a GNex is going to match it in performance.
S4 development is just fine. Just take a look at the section... There are (what appear to be) very stable builds of both CM & PA (among others).
Thanks! Thats what i was thinking.
Our current contract is completely done in January. The wife says she can deal with her phone until then if she has to, but all thats going to do is make it harder to figure out what new phone since there will (presumably) be a lot more options.
Someone suggested going to Tmobile but Im not exactly thrilled with their network around here. I hate my VZW bill being so high, but I feel like "there is no other" since the service is usually excellent and even when its not excellent its at least still working.

A new nexus will probably come out within the next 5 months, the S4 is a HUGE up.date from the GNEX.
I'd suggest the S4 if you need a new phone now or something but also the Motorola X might be out by the end of the year.
The GNEX is "OK", especially being released 1.5 years ago. Most newer phones are upgrades anyways. Decisions decisions huh...
I'm trying to hold out for the Note 3, myself. But the S4 is mighty tempting...
I am really eyeballing the HTC One ever since I found out you can flash it and convert it into an official Google Edition phone.
Edit, I just saw several ads about the Motorola X phone. Might get that instead.

Never been a fan of Motorola.
The HTC one seems nice..... Friend of mine just dumped vzw and got the One on t-mo. I hate the internal only battery and am partial to anything Samsung just because of the open ness of their phones.
Tough decision. Worried waiting will make it even tougher

I keep asking myself this very same question. What phone should I get next?
I'm utterly unimpressed with the nexus 4.. The white version was tempting, but its gone now from the play store.
Guess I'll stick with the gnex till it self destructs.

Galaxy S4 is a very good phone, so is the htc one. If you're looking to spend a little less, then the note 2 is also an excellent device
was thinking of going note 2 when i move on from my gNex...
a part of me wants to hold off for the nexus 5 but its become so hard
I got a good deal for a S4 so that's where I went.
Overall, the S4 is a MAJOR upgrade compared to the galaxy nexus. The speed, Camera, LTE, battery life and the screen are all benefits of the S4.
Now that I have a card slot on my phone again I forgot how much I missed out on this feature with the Galaxy Nexus.
Regarding development, considering the S4 is not a nexus device, development is actually really good and will only get better as more people buy the S4. Sure, a nexus will have more development but the S4 has more than enough to satisfy you.
Consistently hitting 5 hours of screen on time and not worrying about chargers through out the day is awesome as well.

hehe, theres always one!
I had another suggestion to go to T-mo, so for the heck of it I broke down what I would be paying.
Id need 2 lines, so a family package. Unlimited everything on both lines is 120/month. Plus the 20/month for each phone Id need to buy, looking at 160 per month before fees. Thats actually more than I pay on VZW, granted only one of my VZW lines has unlimited data (not sure if that will go away when/if I upgrade the phone).
I realize the 20/month for each phone goes away after 2 years on Tmo, but essentially its a 2 year contract. Im also not positive of the speeds I can get from them in my area....Open Signal shows it as a decent network but the average download is 4MB compared to almost 7 for VZW, so Im guessing its not 4G/LTE (yet)
EDIT: reading about the current state of unlimited data on Verizon, the line I have unlimited on is "month to month", can I swap a phone (not one I paid retail for) onto that line without losing unlimited?
There speed are decent near me. The only way id get an iPhone is if Google music was available on iOS.

The S4 would be fine as long as you don't grab the i9500 "octa core" variant. Though, I hate touchwiz a lot.
I actually listen to music in phone speakers quite a bit, I would go for the HTC One instead of the S4. Moto X looks good if you are in the US. Hope they bring the new moto X outside of the US too.
The S4 Active looks awesome, but until it comes to Verizon I'll probably get the S4 or the next unlocked phone that's available on VZW.
