LG to unveil Nexus phone at the end of the month - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I just read this on CNET News:
CNET has confirmed that the phone will be a modified version of the Optimus G. Other handset manufacturers could also release their own Nexus phones as well. The phone will be announced at the end of the month, according to a person briefed on the matter. While it will run some of the same specifications as the Optimus G, it will be modified to fit into the Nexus program. Google and LG haven't yet come up with a name for the product.
Like the Optimus G, the phone is expected to come with Qualcomm's Snapdragon quad-core processor, 2 gigabytes of RAM, a 1,280x768 True-High Definition IPS display, an 8-megapixel camera, and a nonremovable battery. It will also have no microSD slot and only 8GB to 16GB of internal storage, according to Modaco.

So, it looks like the 5 manufacturers for next Nexus project are Samsung, LG, HTC, Sony and Asus (tablet)?

I don't see how is a rumor, when is "confirmed". CNET will not post things like that just for fun.

Unless I win the lottery, not getting it so, good luck guys.
More disappointed about the overall Nexus program's movement towards anyone can make one.

I like the idea. If each manufacturer had a Nexus phone we could choose from whichever brand or tech we prefer, rather than stuck with whatever luck of the draw.

Wow Google, why would you let LG make this, sorry not buying the next nexus, this ones my fav right now

Development will be split miserably IMO, which is the main reason I don't like it.
Not to mention, I enjoyed one Nexus phone being the top dog in terms of reference for all Android devices

If it's a non-expandable 16GiB, count me out.
Non-replaceable battery just makes it worse.

As for battery, I guess I understand some people want that ability, but I've never removed the battery in my phone to replace it or anything like that... If they can keep the phone thin with a large battery, and keeping it sealed helps them do that (it does), then I'm completely OK with it.

Why hate on lg? I really don't get it. They seem to have high end device with currently probably the best hw out or coming out.
I don't have any bias hardware wise to a OEM myself. If anything Samsung has annoyed me with their source code crap. Htc as well. Moto and their damn locked bootloaders. And moto not updating a one year old device with a dual core to ICS. I kinda hope none of those OEMS get a nexus device on principal.

If the stock battery was great, by all means, seal it in, I don't care.
I'm glad the GNex wasn't sealed though.
-Brought to you by Marino's Galaxy Nexus-

I would really like the option of a removable battery. I don't care how big a non removable one is. Things happen and I would like a spare so if it dies or you're away from a charger you can swap it out.
Or until batteries can magically recharge in 5 mins

What happens when you get a sod and you need a battery pull?....anyways it'll be nice to have multiple nexus devices....the only thing I'm not a fan of on my gnex is the sampled screen.....its nice and vibrant but can be cartoony IMHO....I feel IPS is a good balance of screen types.....but other than that I'll wait to see what else come out......I had a gx2 and I thought it was a well made piece of hardware but with closed source code on drivers and such ICS never really ran properly....but cm7 was slick!!!

Devices with no removable battery will have a button combo (or a very long press on the power button) that does a hard reboot of the device. You don't need a removable battery. Google wouldn't make a Nexus that couldn't be reset in a bootloop or freeze.

I thought about getting it but they ruined it!
Anybody have thoughts on this? Mat black rather than metal? Ugh... That signature curve is now a block rofl.

When i first saw the images of the LTE version i was disgusted. The color choice and the added bulkiness definitely took away from the sleak design. I'm happy with the E4GT and i hope my next phone come 2012 has some quad core goodness
Blasted from my Epic4GTouch con XDA-PA
It. Is. Hideous. The poor poor phone has been continually hobbled. First the went to OMAP, ****ty GPU, then they stayed with no SDcard and only 16gb, then 5mp camera, then they jammed in a giant LTE radio on top of the CDMA version usually being larger. Sure, it's probably got a bigger battery, but, that's to make up for the battery-thirsty LTE....and this phone should have been out like 2 or 3 months ago and Verizon still hasn't dropped a date. But nobody cares....and now it's fat and ugly?
Yeah, I changed my screen density to 160 and can totally live with that for now, lol. The only thing extra you are getting are the earliest updates from Google....oh yeah, and expensive tiered data. If Sprint keeps slowly improving it's data speeds (as I have experienced slowly over the past month) Verizon ceases to have any advantages....especially once we get our GNexus, which my Sprint rep said should be around May. (grain of salt, YMMV, etc etc etc).
God. It looks more like a DroidX than a Nexus.

Agreed. Have a high end "super phone" model, a low end "economy" model and a mid-range model that is the "super phone" from 6 months ago. Cycle downward so the low-end has variety too eventually.
Really? You all can tell from a poorly-lit, low-res shot of the side and back that this phone is "hideous?" Really?
Bummer for those expecting Galaxy Nexus form factor in CDMA & I agree with Dan it looks like a freaking DroidX.

It looks almost twice as thick, though I'm sure it's not that bad. At least 50% thicker. No curve? And it looks slightly more squared and has a big lump. Square it up a bit more, make it a tad thicker and put the bump at the other side and we've got a DroidX.
I'm pretty spoiled by this ET4G I guess. 720p and NFC (and a number of nominal downgrades) just doesn't have the allure anymore, especially with that shape.
I really want to own a Nexus device though. N1 was legendary and will have ICS before we do (does have?), same for the NS/4G. The only phone faster and smoother in operation I have ever used is the ET4G, by a hair.
Once we get a good solid AOSP kernel we're in the game and that won't matter and I guess I'll hold out for the next Nexus device on Sprint. *sigh*
The curve is still there, but since the phone is thicker it's less obvious. That's all. Chill, people. LTE required it to be thicker. Period. Is this seriously that big of a deal? Would you rather them have skipped LTE to make it slightly thinner so it can be slightly prettier? How often, really, is ANYONE going to look at their phone from this angle? The first day, and maybe a few times when they're showing it off to friends while the phone is still exciting and new. And then never again.

Honestly, no...this hasn't changed my mind. I'm still not going to get it, but, that's for a number of other reasons. First and foremost being that Sprint's service has been steadily picking up for the past month and promises to pick up a lot more over the next 6 months based on planned tower upgrades. But my second--a very close second--reason is unlimited data wins. Even if it's not as fast. 2gb of data (or 4gb if they still have that promotion going on whenever this phone comes out at some fictional date in the future) over LTE (that I have seen tested in my area at between 15-30mbps reliably) could suck down 2-4gb of data in...well....between 10 and 50 minutes of full-throttle downloading depending on the promo you get and the speed you get....
Yeah, I'm all set with that trap.
The phone is .5mm thicker and the curve and thickness look off due to the color. If the other one was black it'd look nearly identical. .5mm is very small.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
No one said it would be "huge" even though it does look noticeably bigger. Just stating the differences that i for one am not satisfied with.
Instead of metal bezel, it'll just be mat/black. I honestly think it's going to be built like the Epic touch. PLASTIC.
Sent from the future.
Those differences are minimal at best. People are reaching hard with this one.
To be honest, the only feature I really wanted from the Galaxy Nexus was the 720p HD screen.
However, even though the Samsung Galaxy S II only has a WVGA diplay, the Super AMOLED Plus makes up for it (by a lot compared to other WVGA displays) and aI dont think I'm going to miss out on HD resolution that much until my next upgrade.
I think once we get ICS on our E4GT none of us should really care about the GN.
Would anyone on Sprint really care about the GN if it was being released with Gingerbread? Minus the screen, it would almost seem like a downgrade.
What we should be looking forward to is quad core phones. Now that will be a true upgrade...

i9250 vs i515 Battery Door, Does NOT Fit

Just wanted to make you guys aware that the battery door for the i9250 does NOT fit the i515 for Verizon.
I bought two from the link listed below to use on the two Galaxy Nexii in my house to get rid of the awful Verizon branding and was unable to get either of them to clip onto the phone properly. Only a few of the pins just do not quite line up in the exact same position and appear to have a different design that doesn't clip properly.

What's really sad is the texture of the i9250 door is a much softer touch, much more noticeable than on the i515. I mean, it really feels like something worth bragging about like Samsung did at their Unpacked presentation when they originally announced the phone.
Also, I notified the seller of my mistake and requested a refund and instead he said I could keep them and he was just credit me what I paid minus shipping. He definitely got 5-star feedback and highly recommend him, even though the items he sells take longer to arrive from China.
Sigh, Samsung should of just made the god damn GSM version identical in form factor and just put in a bigger battery.
All this fragmentation in hardware just makes everyone's life more difficult in finding accessories as well.
For those interested, I found the following three sellers that list a battery door without the Verizon branding that specifically states that it is for the i515 and not the i9250.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-ba...225?pt=Batteries_Chargers&hash=item1c1da723c9
I contacted the three of them and all of them confirmed that it indeed for the i515 as they have separate parts which are internally labeled as "i9250" inside the door itself whereas these specifically show "i515" on them. I bought two and was told I can return them if they don't fit. I'm hoping they do and they have that smooth feeling I really liked. I'll update this post after I get them.

From the pictures, it looks like it won't fit. Because at the bottom they have 3 clips like the one in the op has which (if I read correctly) doesn't fit.
Now if only they made a non branded extended battery cover. That'd be great. My case covers up the back for now though. I'll be fine for now. I definitely was hoping to hear the GSM back fit the LTE back.
I thought i read somewhere (cant remember the android site) that you could use a x-acto knife and cut the extra tab's and it will fit?
If you do try this would you let us know if it does fit then?
I would love to get one and do it then.

I just received the back covers that are specifically manufactured for the i515 from one of the Chinese sellers I listed earlier. I can confirm with much disappointment again, that these also do not fit properly. They are certainly closer, but there is still one tab on both sides that is in the wrong place and causes the case not to clip properly. I did try shaving these clips off to get it to fit and while it does now, one of the sides has about a half-mm of give to it since the hole for the clip is now empty and not holding the door in place.
Color me disappointed.
Edit: I reached out to the seller and he has already gotten back to me. He has told me that he now carrier 3 (three) different battery doors for the Galaxy Nexus and is requesting I send him pictures of my original door for comparison to send me out the correct one. Third time's a charm?
Dang hopefully this one will work

Hardware fragmentation? Are you serious?
You do realize that part of the increased form factor is due to the LTE radio correct? And that adding a battery doesn't create the same form factor?
Its a business decision. Plain and simple. Does it make sense to drop more money to fit ALL the units with 1850 mAh battery? Not really. The GSM radios does not drain as heavy as the LTE, so why do it?
The different between a 1750 mAh battery and 1850 is barely anything and not worth screwing up the form factor of the smaller device.
You don't get your cake and get to eat it too.

Back on topic, I got a message back from the eBay seller. He was apparently waiting to hear back from his Samsung supplier for an answer to the same questions I had and did not receive a response. He, like the previous seller, agreed to refund my payment in full. He also said he would contact me once he received any more info about the other back covers they have or will have available soon.
So the hunt continues! I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus (ENGINEERING) Model?

Hey Everyone... Originally when I got my GNEX, I could have sworn that when I tried to unlock/root it, it had been easier than a lot of the instructions, but I didn't think too much about it at the time. (I got it directly from a VZW wireless store) I think at this point, it was already unlocked. Now that I've changed phones, I wanted to prep this one for selling, and I was trying to follow instructions on how to reset/relock the phone, but it doesn't seem to let me lock it with the fastboot oem lock commands... but if this is an engineering build, should I even bother? Or can I sell it as is and just state factory unlocked?
Here is an image of my "About Phone" after flashing back the google images that I downloaded from here: https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/mysid-icl53f-factory-65895fa8.tgz

Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask, but I tried -looking- for a factory unlocked CDMA version to judge it against, and can't even seem to find any, am I just missing something? Are people selling them somewhere else?
You won't find a "Factory Unlocked" model, AFAIK they don't make them. What you have is somewhat unique, although not that useful since it's a Nexus device. If you want more info on what exactly you have this thread has a decent overview if you read the first 2 pages: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1461386 Bottom line, your fine to sell it as is.
To the right person you will get more just because it is an engineering model! If I were you I would bank on that!!

Will do. Kinda bummed about the selling prices in general, haven't been able to decide what to list it for. Gonna throw it up with no reserve and see what happens.
Put rare and what not in it.

If its rare people will pay, just due to the fact that no one else can get it.
I personally am the type of person you want to sell this to. I buy tons of stuff for hundreds more just because I collect tech.
***Speaking of which, if anyone knows someone that owns an original 20gb PS3 I am looking to spend $400 or more depending on condition. Been looking for 3 years. Also looking for a copy of Super Metroid for SNES, I`ll pay $60 with out box, $100 in box***
Anyways yeah, if I didn`t already own a Galaxy Nexus and was not in the process of looking for a Galaxy S2 White (perferably from France to use here in Canada) I`d pay around $800 easy.

I hadn't thought of it from a collectors point of view, I was thinking purely in terms of a developer. fiyawerx, maybe you should at least look for an alternative market? Maybe Adreno knows some other collectors?

No I don't sorry.
Only reason I threw out the $800 number is because, really its not that much more you'd pay buying a "normal" phone really.
I still remember paying something like $700 after tax for the Xperia x10 (ouch bad device) and another $700 for the Xperia Arc (Better device but still too much IMO)
$800 is not that big of a jump, and you are getting something truly unique.
***On a side note: I bought the Xperia x10 and my wife's first iphone, the white 3GS the same day...I think the total was like $1400. Imagine my surprise learning my brand new "latest tech" android didn't support multitouch....mmm still feel that burn! Oh well I guess 2 finger touch ended up being supported later, but by then I was on the Samsung Captivate. Loved the Captivate!***

Used daily for about 3 weeks daily, with a screen protector installed @ verizon when I bought it. Somehow it still managed to get a tiny line in it near the front camera in the upper right... you have to have the light hit it just right to see it, I tried getting it in the pictures here but could not. I took the screen protector off now to show how clean the real screen is, there's some dust on it though.
The pictures came out a bit too big that I'd want to post here, you can see them here:

I still have the original box and books, but am not sure which usb cable or where the actual wall wart is right now that came with it.

Is this phone still worth buying?

I currently own a T-Mobile G2x and plan on picking this baby up in a few days from the playstore.
A friend of mine showed me his and I completely fell in love with the screen. I'm also hopeful about the updates being pushed by Google for another year or so.
With that said, is this phone still worth getting with other devices already out like the ONE series and Samsung's S3?
I was intially going to purchase a HTC One S, but can't bring myself to do such a big gamble because of all the hardware and software issues I've read about.
for all that is holy and right, god yes.
i could ramble on what rocks about this phone, but ill keep it small.
its a nexus, so direct updates from google. Large dev community. freaking beautiful screen and physical phone dimensions. oh did i mention kick ass software and dev community
i came from the sprint epic 4g and they were doin some crazy stuff with that phone. with the nexus, i hope to see some awesome stuff.
again so much to put into words. the nexus is worth every cent
I got mine yesterday. Short and sweet, yes!!

I'm a former G2x owner, and the Galaxy Nexus blows the G2x away in every aspect. Not only that, it's hell of a lot more stable.
Do it. It's totally worth it.

if i can pick again, no thanks.
Its two issues that keep this or any nexus phone on top
1- direct (fast & unbloated/restrected) updates
2- a huge development base (other phones may have big dev bases, but they cant even compare)

Yes. Good phone.

Of course it's still worth buying. This is still the best Android phone out there. Galaxy S3 and One X may both be faster, but if you're a casual developer or tech guy, then Galaxy Nexus is the best you can get in terms of software.
Quad-core is overrated on phones and I don't like Galaxy S3's hardware decisions (the hardware keys). Galaxy Nexus has on-screen keys, which are just amazing, I could not go back to a phone without them. I don't like the bells and whistles of Galaxy S3 and One X either (which won't be a problem if you root of course). Their usability features are an overkill and don't work at all times.
Since Galaxy Nexus does come with the best version of Android - native, non-bloated one - and has very good hardware to run anything you throw at it today, then yes, it's the phone to get and the one I've suggested to fellow developers. One of the young developers I know bought it just last week and is loving it.
As everyone else had already mentioned, yes, do it - you won't regret it. I've had mine only a month now and it's freaking amazing. Fast and unbloated, beautiful screen, effortless to root, great battery life.
Best of all we will be first to get jellybean, my friend with the sgs 3 will be on ics until sometime next year. Hehe.

I would say no, if i were to start over this minute... I would get a Razor Maxx over this.
I think a new phone of this caliber and price range should ROCK right out the gate and that the modding community should only (need to) make it even better... in this case it takes the modding to make it close to right with still spotty reception and CRAPPY battery life.
Is the screen beautiful... is the phone fast and with rooting and a lot of extra software does it get the job done? Yes.
But so does the RMaxx without the radio issues and it has boat loads of battery.
I would much rather have a few less bells and whistles of a newer OS and have battery life & radio reliability. I feel the bells and whistles are a lot easier to add on later than the other way around.
I like the phone... don't flame me please... but it has shortcomings
I get excellent battery life... i have never had any issues with the radio either.

Ahh you have the LTE version huh? Quite a few people seem not so happy with that one. However the GSM doesn't have as many issues as the LTE seems to..
I would say do it as well man. It's a much much better device than the G2x and you'll really enjoy it.

Personally, I wouldn't get the Motorola. I'm a developer, and it's giving us a ridiculous amount of trouble when compared to the GS2 or the Nexus.
The nexus is a great terminal, and since they lowered the prices it's hard to beat in the quality/cost ratio.

As you'll see, a vast majority of the people saying "don't get it" are those with the Verizon LTE version.
To be blunt, the CDMA version of any nexus is going to be an afterthought.
Moreover, LTE is a battery-drain in comparison to UMTS/HSPA+.
If you get the Galaxy Nexus, get the HSPA+ one from the Google Play Store.
I currently have the LTE version of the Galaxy Nexus. Does my battery tend to get drained fast? Yea, although most of the time it's not an issue, I work in an office where I get to keep it plugged in most of the time. If I am planning on being out all day I always keep an extra battery, it's really not that difficult to carry one.
Does my signal tend to suck? Yea, sort of. I hardly ever make calls so I can't really notice there, although I do tend to get a lot of dropped calls but i never know which side they are coming from. My data is amazingly fast when it works right but too many times it says 4G but nothing is going on, so I have to turn the data off and back on to get it working again.
With all that said, I've had this phone since December and I still absolutely LOVE this phone! I still look at the screen and think "wow that's cool". I still show it off to people, I still love using it to pay with Google Wallet.
However, I have recently decided to get rid of it. I will be giving it to my friend, because I just ordered the GSM one from the Google Play store! I'm so sick and tired of Verizon so I want to try the whole prepaid services thing till I find something that works best for me with a service that doesn't treat me like I'm trying to steal from them because I have the unlimited data package THEY gladly offered me years ago. What ever happened to treating older customers better??
There are a few of us that jumped ship from the G2x here now, I don't think we made the wrong choice.
Plus we'll be getting Jelly Bean soon!
Just like you, I think the screen got me. That and stable ICS. I loved my G2x but after hanging around my friends with 4.3 or 4.5inch screens... I felt... inadequate...
Haha, just kidding, but I did want a bigger screen. I'm really happy with this phone now and I think I will be for a while.

Software keys to me are a waste of screen real estate. There is no advantage to having them. I remove them and use LMT because I want the extra screen space. Using LMT is not as quick as having the buttons there but worth the sacrifice.
The GNEX has the space at the bottom of the device to fit keys there and I wish they would have or added them as well and given the choice to use on which one we want to use.

Goodbye!

I'm sorry if this isn't the place for it, but it's time to say goodbye to the Nexus community. I have liked and disliked this phone. I loved the ROMs, the community, the endless entertainment of the Q&A section. I disliked the trolls, and the battery life. Overall, I loved owning this phone. Thanks to all the developers for their time, efforts, blood, sweat, and tears trying to make us happy. Especially big shoutouts to morfic for helping me with kernel issues, fitsnugly for his amazing CM10 kang, tiny for his epic kernel, and many others. However, I have sold it and tomorrow my Galaxy S III arrives. I only upgraded because I got a fantastic deal on both selling my Nexus and buying the SIII. So, peace out Nexus community. It's been real.
What was the deal?
-Brought to you by Marino's Galaxy Nexus-
Sold my Gnex and accessories for $300. S3 for $385.
You're gonna regret that.
I have a gnex, bought an S3 thinking it was the sh*t, now I'm selling it and going back to the gnex and bought myself a nexus 7.
I never should have left the nexus community.
Project butter doesn't work on the S3, Samsung won't release sources for the exynos processor so the cm team can't get project butter to work on cm either.
Codeworx is leaving, gokhanmoral is leaving and more.
Great devs leaving because Sammy are dicks.
Anyone else thinking of leaving for the S3 my advice is don't bother.
International version, should have said that earlier.

I understand that Nexus people are going to love Nexuses. But if you look at it from my perspective, it makes sense. First of all, there's still tons of developers like incubus, morfic, imo, etc. I like Nature UX. The VZW S3 does not use an Exynos Processor. AOSP ROMs are nearing completion, TW is stable. Battery life is fantastic, along with performance, same with the screen. I'm sorry, but you can't convince me that it isn't an upgrade. The LG Nexus is awesome looking, except if Google has half a brain, they won't let VZW get their hands on it.

None of the US S3 use exynos, so for once we can't blame VZW, and it makes the comment difficult to comprehend.
That said, sgs3 is a nice phone, but I much prefer TW over CMIX or CMX.
By far.
An upgrade over the nexus prime? Big time. For gamers maybe even more than me

I think he was saying it doesn't use Exynos, so AOSP is near completion.
Thats what I took from it anyway.
If AOSP ROMs were completed and I felt development could be at least 3/4 what it is here, I might have considered a switch, but nah.
