[Q] sdcard space as RAM - Galaxy Y GT-S5360 General

Guys, i wanna know if there's a way by which i could use the available space on my sdcard as my ram, thus increasing the performance and speed. If there's a way, then please tell me about it.
Thanks.

there is, just search the SGY forum, and i think it doesnt really affect performance since its not actual memory hardware

So I have this idea....

Hi guys
I'm not a programmer by any means, nor do I know anything about developing software, so take this idea with a grain of salt.
The issue I notice from time to time with my PPC6800 is slowdown from lack of ram (or that I haven't closed the apps and they're hogging the ram). My phone only has 64mb....so this got me thinking.... Vista has a feature called Readyboost which uses any flash based USB key to act like virtual ram (or a pagefile).
SO, how feasable would it be to create software that would coule read/write off the microSD card as if it were ram? Basically a MobileReadyboost as it were.
Discuss amongst yourselves =)
PS: Forgive me if something like this already exists for our platforms...but I haven't seen it.
SD cards read and write slow...
What if deleating the extended rom partition (located in ram, right?) and using that for a pagefile instead?
most people don't seem to use the extended rom when cooking. why not just make it usefull?????!!!!!

SD cards can be slow, but there are some models that are faster. Granted they cost more and are a little harder to find, because they are aimed photo people. But yeah.
extended rom in cooked roms is generally used for extra storage anyway so it isnt like it isnt being used

problem is that today it's not just sdcards which is the bottleneck the sd interface itself on the cpu is slow too

[Q] Internal Memory: Deciding factor

Hi guys I want to purchase Neo and the only thing stopping me is the low internal memory, Since Arc and Neo are built on the same platform, can you people guide if ther is a way on neo to install all apps on sd card keeping the internal memory free for the apps that cant be moved to SD like google maps (as far I know). I also believe that the mails & gtalk chats are stored on the phone so keeping the phone memory is imp specially when we have so less internal memory. Plz help me buy this the other option is galaxy s II but its too big to be kept comfortably in pocket.
This actually seems to be a problem in new Xperia's why nobody is replying.
Or maybe no one's replying because its been 5 hours
The internal memory on the Arc is low as it is... its prone to lags every once in a while when the memory gets so low that the phone has to do some cleanups. I'd say go for the GS2, isn't it roughly the same size as the Arc?
sgs2 look like a beast
arc look like a sexy lady....hahaha
i believe with the overclock kernel, things will work quite nicely, like lg2x, altho 512 its kinda snappy with duo core
need others to confirm....
I am interested for neo since there is no forum for it I had to post it in ARC's thread, I believe there are almost equal as per hardware internal and S/W. Neo is quite smaller than S II.
I find that after removing a lot of the SE stuff, it frees up a lot of the internal memory. I put all of my apps on the internal memory and games on the sd, and it's working out pretty well for me.
Though if you have A LOT of apps/games, then you can look at "App 2 SD" which is on the Android Market. It lets you move almost all of your apps onto your SD card. So while having low internal memory sucks, its not that big of an issue IMO.

I've moved google maps to sd card without a problem (with titanium backup) and i've uninstalled alot of SE bloatware.
Off course, the internal memory of Arc is no comparison to the SGS2, but i honestly don't experience any lag, but then again, i'm not a heavy app user (got bout 20/25 of them).
A friend of mine got the SGS2 and it's indeed slightly bigger then the Arc, and putting them next to eachother confirms the beauty and the beast story ;-).
edit... only just saw your interested in Neo, that's a different comparison regarding looks, i haven't seen a Neo in reel life yet

Memory swap... Dev please explain this. Necessary?

OK so I have a question, and I'll just ask it flat out and hopefully somebody can shed some light on this.
What is the point of using memory swap on this device? It already has plenty of RAM space. Isn't memory swap ideal only for slower devices that don't have a whole lot of RAM? I see absolutely no point in doing this on the note ii. Your SD card is wayyyyy slower than your RAM disk, and it just puts more wear and tear on the SD.
Can anybody explain why everyone seems to be doing this? Just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me technically.
Thanks

You will have more space to install more apps specially if you download all those games with the large files.

I think you are confused about what memory swap is

[Q] Kernels, Phone Setup, RAM, Scripts

Hey guys!
I noticed in the specifications of this phone, it claims to have 0.50gb of RAM (512mb) However all your kernels are around 370 of under?
Is this mistake in the specifications or are you lowering Ram for some strange reason unknown to me?
I'm using liquid smooth build#2 at the moment, but i'm only getting around 99mb free Ram.. I don't know why but it seems the Phone has less Ram then i initially thought.. However, i don't have any scripts going at the moment, i don't need battery, so any " and it's good on battery " will be respectively ignored.
I have looked around but not really found a decent enough set up for this phone yet.. Can someone please recommend me a kernel for 4.2.2 which is fast, and responsive, but also one with good Ram?
And can someone recommend some scripts worth using with this Phone? Again, don't go on about battery or SD life or phone life, idc about it, it's a spare phone..
Thanks in advance guys, could you provide me with links as well if it's not too much trouble? I prefer being directed straight to the point so i don't end up using the wrong Kernel/script..
Edit1: I'm not changing Rom. At all. unless you get an updated Carbon or 4.3.

Seems noone is willing to reply, but this probably because some searching and logical thinking would answer your questions. So since you are not willing to do it yourself others don´t mind replying to you.
So well I don´t use any scripts but regarding RAM size think about it. If you buy a PC with lets say 2GB installed RAM. Will you get also 2GB free ram by running an Operating System on it?

If you were to purchase 2gb of ram likelyhood is you will recieve 1.59+- usable Ram, free Ram would be totally different, however the way it was presented, and the way i portrayed it was thet the Ramdisk of the kernel was at 370+-, rather then 512.. I'm using a Desire C, which is running CM10 with 300mb free ram, with a 512mb ram disk, whereas with hurtskys kernel 3.0.x i get 99mb free? on 4.2.2 on my golfu i got 270mb free ram, and that was a Rom of 250mb+ and it's only at 767mhz.. yet seems smoother then the SGW? :s On paper it should be the other way around..
dun think u should worry about free ram.
android is based on linux, linux memory concept is different from other OS.
it something like " free memory is waste memory".
memory is always filled and hold so tat it wont waste time to reload.
if need more memory, system will free memory for other usage.
maybe this will help explain better, http://www.linuxatemyram.com/

You should first read what a ramdisk is. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ramdisk
The 270+MB in hurtskys or my kernel is the real RAM aviable. The rest is reserved for the ROM, camera, drivers and processes to work correctly.

[Q] Safety of RAM Expander kind apps

Hello,
I'm using an app called RAM EXpander to increase swap in order to unlag my phone wich is running many many apps...
Since our Xperia S doesnt have much ram, this was the only solution to keep everything running and to not make lag in my phone..
So the question is, how safe can be the use of this kind of apps in relation of the flash memory usage (readings/writings)..
AFAIK it'll do some harm in the long term, but what long term means?? 2 years? 1 month and it'll kill my phone flash memory?? 10 years??
I've seen in XDA and all over the web, people that comment on how bad is using flash as a swap because of the writing limitations in flash memory, but still havent seen an actual case of a dead flash memory... LOL
thank you in advance
As far as I know the only "downside" of using Swap is that it degrades the SDcard, shortening it's life, but it's only noticeable after long periods of usage ( 5/6 years ? ) because of the constant write when swapping inactive blocks from the RAM to the swap partition. Neither you or I have seen dead SDcards because almost no one keeps the same phone for so many years, considering that those who use SWAP tends to need more performance from the phone and, consequently, ends up upgrading the phone itself in about 2/3 years maximum.
Even tho, I don't see swap as a good alternative for "better" multitasking.. sdcard has much slower write/read speeds comparing to RAM (even SSDs are much slower), so re-opening purged apps can be way faster than just swapping it back to the RAM. But it's my opinion
