Hi guys I want to purchase Neo and the only thing stopping me is the low internal memory, Since Arc and Neo are built on the same platform, can you people guide if ther is a way on neo to install all apps on sd card keeping the internal memory free for the apps that cant be moved to SD like google maps (as far I know). I also believe that the mails & gtalk chats are stored on the phone so keeping the phone memory is imp specially when we have so less internal memory. Plz help me buy this the other option is galaxy s II but its too big to be kept comfortably in pocket.
This actually seems to be a problem in new Xperia's why nobody is replying.
Or maybe no one's replying because its been 5 hours
The internal memory on the Arc is low as it is... its prone to lags every once in a while when the memory gets so low that the phone has to do some cleanups. I'd say go for the GS2, isn't it roughly the same size as the Arc?
sgs2 look like a beast
arc look like a sexy lady....hahaha
i believe with the overclock kernel, things will work quite nicely, like lg2x, altho 512 its kinda snappy with duo core
need others to confirm....
I am interested for neo since there is no forum for it I had to post it in ARC's thread, I believe there are almost equal as per hardware internal and S/W. Neo is quite smaller than S II.
I find that after removing a lot of the SE stuff, it frees up a lot of the internal memory. I put all of my apps on the internal memory and games on the sd, and it's working out pretty well for me.
Though if you have A LOT of apps/games, then you can look at "App 2 SD" which is on the Android Market. It lets you move almost all of your apps onto your SD card. So while having low internal memory sucks, its not that big of an issue IMO.

I've moved google maps to sd card without a problem (with titanium backup) and i've uninstalled alot of SE bloatware.
Off course, the internal memory of Arc is no comparison to the SGS2, but i honestly don't experience any lag, but then again, i'm not a heavy app user (got bout 20/25 of them).
A friend of mine got the SGS2 and it's indeed slightly bigger then the Arc, and putting them next to eachother confirms the beauty and the beast story ;-).
edit... only just saw your interested in Neo, that's a different comparison regarding looks, i haven't seen a Neo in reel life yet

According to the specs the phone comes with 576mb of ram, yet when I got my new phone it only had 140mb available, which seems to me that you lose around 75% of the memory advertised before you actually get the phone.
Anyone know what is using up all this memory

Android is using it. It doesn't RUN from ROM, no modern OS does that. ROM is merely where it's stored, it run's in RAM.
thanks for the response, i understand it doesn't run from ROM but just couldn't believe that you lose 75% of the ram.

You don't lose 75% of anything, it's still there. You're using 75% of it!. A phone that uses 0% of it's RAM would be a real-fancy paper weight after all.
If you try to open an app and you don't have enough RAM to run it Android will close activities and apps until there is enough. Any half way decent modern OS acts this way.
75% usage is fine and normal, don't worry about.
Perhaps your phone is developing Alzheimer's?
Actually you guys are confusing a lot here!
The 140MB that are available are ROM memory. The rest of the 512MB is used by the system and Sense etc.
That's not much available, since apps can only be installed into those 140MB.
Of the 576MB RAM, the system also uses some of it. But there's more than 140MB available.
it is indeed the rom, however, being that a massive majority of android apps are less than 1.5 mb in size, and if programmed properly use the SD card for storage means, the likelyhood of most people ever having a problem is minute.
I've read people on these forums with 70 odd apps on their desire and they have no issues whatsoever.
it really is not an issue.
after upgrading from the G1 with only 70mb-80mb available for installing apps unless you used the sdcard for storage was just a shock to only see 140mb available on the desire.
Agreed, it definitely is a problem if you install an app like Google Earth (22meg) and a few large games you will soon run out. On my G1 with apps2sd I had over 200meg of apps installed.
Meh, and HTC put 8GB of internal memory in the Droid Incredible (basicly the US desire), really don't understand why they don't put some internal storage in all of these devices..
Guys is there a tool where I could see how many rom and ram memory is available to install apps.

I'd have to disagree with you I'm afraid - it really is an issue.
My Desire has about 80 apps installed, including Google Earth, Navigon satnav, and about 5 games. I have literally less than 10mb of ROM space left - not even enough for another game.
The space supplied on the ROM for apps is pathetic, and the sooner the Desire gets rooted (to enable apps2sd) the better.
EDIT: I've just realised I've repeated what other people said, and also may have come off like a douche - no offence intended!
Adding SD Storage does not help!

When you think about it, this will make the new HTC Incredible (coming this year) with 8GB on board a big seller for HTC, do feel a little bit let down by HTC on this
I have to admit up until today when I got an "out of space" message I assumed apps were going on the SD Card, I'm really gutted about this. But in my heart I knew at some point went rooting was possible I would do it anyway.

Afaik the 8GB onboard is as storage, not as ROM. So if android is still like today (only allowed application to be installed in ROM) those 8 GB can't be used as well. The main reason of this limitation is to prevent the piracy, but I read somewhere that there is a plan to add a function to store the encrypted application in the external storage. Hopefully that can be realized soon.

No worries. I probably sound like a douche most of the time, but after doing my job for as long as i have, i no longer really care. but no offence intended from my end either. i may be a grumpy sod, but i'm not an a-hole.
anyhoo, most people will get nowhere near 80 apps.
I've been on android since the magic and got nowhere near that yet. most people won't. but yeah, lets hope either HTC start putting more memory in the phones, or google just add pss2sd capability as standard.
either would solve this for those few people that it does effect.

Yeah, perhaps I'm spoilt from having apps2sd on my Dream - I've got used to installing whatever the hell I like, and leaving it there!
Let's hope Paul from MoDaCo finishes rooting/getting write access to the system partition soon. Or indeed, any other dev who can manage it
How do you guys get so many apps? I have installed around 20 apps and it's telling me I'm running low on space.......quite annoying. Having to remove apps to instal others.

LOL that was pretty much what I wrote originally & thought I was talking nonsense so I edited the post, should have left it I guess
For me its not the number of apps its that some are large. Anyone have copilot installed, im thinking of getting it but im worried the maps are going to fill the memory up & leave me room for no other apps! The Desire is a cutting edge device & we just shouldn't have to contend with this issue, Heck I never had this with Windows Mobile. Then again I never had any apps for Windows Mobile

It's not only the issue with the number apps you can install. This issue is also limiting developers. There are a couple of reasons iPhone applications/games are usualy higher quality then the android counterparts. Storage problems is one of those issues sadly.
Right, i have quite a bit of stuff installed, but it's all on my memory card. Yet i keep getting Low Internal Memory warnings, i've only got 32mb left. I don't know what could be taking up so much memory on the phone, is there any way to tell?
Thanks
Install DiskUsage from the market. It'll show you how your storage memory is used.
Root it with Gingerbreak, then use Link2SD, free from the Market. It's basically Apps2SD+, and moves the entirety of the app to the SD.
I've got 60 apps installed and 200mb free.
Everything's dandy, even on a crappy class 6 SD card.
Took me 5 mins in total.
I've got a Neo, but same applies to Arc.
The Xperia Arc has 1GB internal storage, however only around 300MB is actually usable. Even if you move your apps to your SD card, it will still leave traces of it on the internal memory, and thus will take up space on both your SD card and the very limited internal storage of the Arc.
love the phone but internal memory issues
I want to upgrade from galaxy S to SII, but whats holding me back is this lucrative looking beast, design and screen is simply tempting. One worry. Compared to galaxy's gigantic internal memory this beast rests in denial. Like how to manage the android OS with so less internal memory, Os is demanding.
Is there any safe work around to manage the freekiing features and independencies of the OS. I am in love with android & some how I get apps that boosts my daily life, so I use a lot of apps. Plz guide me if I can look for owning Arc. Howz the battery life, will it live upto a day (1.5hrs of music, 15mins of video, 1.5-2 hrs of calling, 45 mins browsing & always online on native Gtalk and Nimbuzz). Plz reply soon I am out of droids now.
i think with the 2.3.3 update it should leave you with more than 50-60 % charge. It also depends on the data usage (Wifi or 3g or 2g). I easily do about 2.3 hours of music 3 mins of vids watching, atleast 30 mins of gaming(2d or 3d-hd), 1 hour of talking and checking mails via 3g and from morning 6 am to night 10 pm i usually have more than 60% charge left.
Then again it differs from day to day. User to User
Hmm.. If its true i m goin to wipe my phone, cause 3 hrs of gaming thats all i get

But What about internal memory
Friends you didn't comment on the internal memory handling. Are the apps lagging on day to day use. Plz let me know.

I did experience lagging. But then, I upgraded to 2.3.3 and then factory reset.
then it runs fast.
I think the RAM is too low compared to other smartphone. My Desire Z, it has only 800 MHz processor, but it has 768 RAM and 1 GB internal storage.
The more you install app, the more it consumes RAM. You should maintain free RAM at least 40% to avoid lagging. So, you have to move apps to SD, but the problem is that not all apps can be moved to SD.
Is there any way to move "all apps" to SD (not just few apps)?
Guide on buying xperia arc
For moving all the apps device needs rooting I am just scared that this doesn't ruin the basic quality features of the device like media playback like music clarity and video clarity.

Just wait for the xperia duo its supposed to rival the sgs2 if not a little better, the duo is supposed to have 1.4ghz dual core 1.5GB RAM and 4.5"screen 12 mp camera. I've got an xplay right now and I think this is the biggest waste of money ever(i just buy phones out right with no contract) I'll most likely buy one when they come out this fall

Since I Rooted my arc I've been able'd to keep my internal memory high and send most of my apps to SD card and even some system apps like lets golf
Try link to sd, it's more effective. Search the market and install, google 'partition sd card' and follow the instructions.

I know Apps2SD application doesnt support our phone but is there really no other way aside from rooting?
Why did Samsung even removed this function. Is it Samsung's intention?
I have 64GB Micro SD and I cant even maximize its use. I only got about 3GB left in my phone storage.

I hadn't owened my Note II more than 10 days before I ran out of memory! I finally had a phone capable of playing graphic intense games only to find that I would have to delete one to install another. Madness. I have heard people mention that it has to do with multi-user security but I don't buy that. My complaints, assumptions and opinions seem to have fallen onto deaf ears. Few seem to care surprisingly. They probably use their phone to call people
I have suggested in other post that we start a campaign to force Samsung/Google to change this but like I said. Few seem to care.
What worries me most is that this may scare off game developers. Something that will seriously harm android.
I have a theory that Google have a console in the making and are worried that it's sales will suffer if powerful pkones like ours are upgraded in two years and then used as consoles and media devices in the games room.
There was an article that was posted a while back stating why this was done, and while I can't find the exact article at the moment if memory serves correctly it basically it had to do with the user becoming confused with how the phone would handle storage.
For example, there was a time when you'd have let's say 8 GB of storage being marketed, with 2 GB of it being partitioned for apps and the rest partitioned for user data (pictures, videos, music, and so forth). However, this divide in the way that storage space was handled wasn't really unveiled to the user unless they knew where to look, so many people would wind up quickly filling the 2 GB of storage that was designated specifically for apps and then wonder why the heck they were out of space.
So with newer devices (I believe this started with the Galaxy Nexus?), the partitioning scheme allows for apps to use the entire available memory space (that hasn't been claimed by the system or what not, for example a 16 GB device will usually have ~10.5-12 GB of usable space that the user can access). However, devices such as the Galaxy S III and the Note II map the internal memory as if it were an SD card (hence why it's mounted at /sdcard, and the external SD card is now at /extSDcard).
There are solutions that you can use, for example Directory Bind is one of them (search for it on the forums), however it does require root. I really don't think there are any other ways around this at the moment for those who are running stock & unrooted.
Hmm. I'm not really familiar with rooting. I haven't done it before. I think I can follow procedures as I used to do that on my BB long time before I moved to android.
Are there any drawbacks in rooting? I read one time that S-pen functionality will be gone?
S-pen will still work, along with wi-fi calling snd everything else. The only functionality you lose is OTA (over-the-air) updates.
You should check out the "How to root T889 +Counter reset +Unroot+ Stock firmware" thread on the forums.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1955423
I successfully rooted my phone. You can still use the stock rom if you're hesitant about custom ones.

I wouldn't say plenty... camera is okay.
I have exactly the same amount of storage I had before with my S1,
which was released in 2010, so I dont feel "plenty"...
But the phone in fact is really nice, fast, stable and comes almost without annoying bugs.
The camera is really good, too, especially with sunny-day-outside videos.

Since I knew of the storage capacity and bought the phone nevertheless, Im certainly not a hater.
There are people out there, who use their phone differently than you do,
just think of someone - like me - who wants to listen to .flac-files.
At almost one gb per album, even with a 64gb microsd, space isnt in fact plenty.
But still, to most users, storage seems to be sufficient. Just saying, it could be more...

I personaly like this phone a lot. I like it before it was even anounced as I was in a need to change my old phone to a new one but found out that the 5" flagman phones are too big for my liking always liked small phones and even Laptops if that matter after all the phone is something you carry everyday. So when the SGS4 mini was introduced I know that this was my phone I especially like the 8 mps camera which I already know form SII and S3 and love. However I`m not much of a photograph myself so even with this beatuiful camera I can`t take great photos but it`s ok.
What about daily use the Dual-Core CPU is fast enough to handle normal workload like browsing ocational Facebook activities etc. The 1.5 GB of Ram could and make all the difference in multi-tasking and is great that you know that whatever you do you wouldn`t run out of RAM.
I think the most anouing issues with this phone are the internal storage in my case (I-9195) it`s only 5GB which is really small as I play games mostly Fifa 14 and the phone has only 1.4GB internal storrage free after the fifa install. So if you plan to play games the internal storage is not big enough or I suggest you to find a phone with the 16GB internal. The other anouing issue is the battery life the phone hardly manage to give me whole day of intensive usage which isn`t good at all. However in normal usage it surely could last 2 days.
So to put it simple the phone is fast and the size is great however the internal storrage is less then needed and the battery life is poor.
