Once again I'm back asking the same question as before. I hate doing this but I get so far out of the loop that I have no clue where the things have gone with the Xperia Play. But without further ado here we go.
I have done some digging through the development thread as well as the general and FAQ threads. Im looking for a light rom that is very good with gaming. Im currently running... well I cant seem to find it now. Anyways its starting to flip out on me here and there. Ive had it for a long time and I know development has come to a halt on it so its time to switch. I really don't care whether its ICS or Gingerbread. It would be cool if it was ICS but it still looks like ICS is to tough for our phones to run along with games. It also looks like PS pocket still is not supported on ICS, but I could be wrong. Along with the rom being light I want it to support the PS pocket so I can play my PSX games. This is a must for me. It seams stupid to drop a feature that was the whole reason for me getting this phone. I see a lot of people are saying NTX Light rocks and from what I see it does but its GSM only. From the looks of it CDMA seams to be a rare thing to support in a rom now a days. I don't blame the developer since the CDMA community looks to be a ghost town. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!! Id love to hear from the few CDMA users still here but you GSM guys are alright. Your opinion is welcome as well .
Edit: Oh and if you haven't guessed my bootloader is unlocked.
Cola rom on 2.3.3 gb or gbtweaked i got darkforest 3.0.5 as my bootloader is locked all three have done great for me.
sent from my r800x with darkforest rom 3.0.5 on locked bootloader
I got Cola rom on my X and never looked back
I prefered Stock .2.3.4 (64 baseband) with RooT and delete all malware ( FB, Timescape etc) + DooMKERNEL V14 + ICS Theme its ultimate weapon...
FAST, STABLE, LIGHT ( only using only 80MB of RAM... 250MB FREE for you)
I can upload for you CWM Backup
I use to be on cola but I was having stability issues for some reason. I guess it could of been because of a bad flash. After a month or so it started bugging out on me. If I'm not mistaken Hogwarts was going to pass the cola rom onto someone else. Did this happen or is development still at a stand still since Hogwarts phone got eaten?
As for 2.3.4 I also had that before cola but gmail would never sync. The stock roms are OK but I notice, even after uninstalling all the bloatware there is still speed issues compared to a bare rom. Unless this has changed?

I think v6 supercharger that was preinstalled in cola is giving you problems.
Well last night I stayed up and installed cola again. It started acting up on me again then I remembered chery2k said v6 came installed on the rom. I always use AutoKiller Memory Optimizer with any rom install and thought they might be interfering with each other. Did a fresh install this time not installing AutoKiller and she runs like a champ. Normally by the end of the day I have 20-5 % battery life left. Now Im at 50% and I still have my usual 1.5 Ghz overclock. Thanks for the recommendation guys. Even though its an old rom I use to be on you helped me fix the issues I had with it. THANKS!
Hi. I switched phones from a Samsung Galaxy Ace to a Sony Xperia Pro a year ago (got fed up with the touchscreen keyboard, wanted a real QWERTY keyboard.) I like the phone, but now that the warranty's expired I'd like to try a custom ROM or three, just to play with. Also I'm having battery life issues since upgrading to ICS (It's weird; the first time I upgraded it seemed to be OK, but I had to send the phone in for a warranty repair and they went and reflashed the firmware to Gingerbread on me. I reupgraded to ICS via Sony's PC Companion and now the battery life's terrible- about what it was on my Galaxy Ace.)
What I want is:
Everything working. I don't want to encounter problems such as the camera not zooming via the volume buttons, the front camera not working, keyboard layout problems, no wifi/bluetooth, etc. All hardware needs to work at least as well as when using the stock ROM.
Stability. No, or very few, crashes (nothing is perfect, I know), not a lot of force-closes of apps.
Good power management, even if this means slowing down the CPU clock. I'm willing to sacrifice some performance if that means that I don't have to recharge more than once a day. Also I'd like to be rid of some of the background services that I don't need or want, and that use up some juice. (BTW, my typical phone use is sending and receiving 3 to 4 texts per day, one or two voice calls daily, around 6 to 7 hours of web browsing using wifi, maybe 30 minutes playing solitaire, reading ebooks for an hour or three instead of web surfing, and occasionally using the camera or the flashlight, weather apps, calculator, etc.)
I want to be rid of Sony's bloatware. I don't need it.
I don't really care if the ROM has a lot of eye candy, bells & whistles, etc. or if it's a lot like the stock ROM in look and feel. However, k3wl things would be k3wl, so I'm willing to try them and play a bit.
BTW I'm a newbie when it comes to working with the Xperia. I got pretty good about rooting, modding and changing ROMs on the Ace, but Sony is a whole different ball game than working with Samsungs. So whatever ROM I end up choosing needs to have step-by-step instructions somewhere, with download links to everything I'm going to need.
Please post your ROM recommendations. TIA!
Edit: I've turned off data connections as I only use wifi, I've dimmed the display as low as it will go, I only turn wifi on when I'm actually going to use it and turn it off afterward, I never use GPS, I set it to flight mode at night- basically I've done everything I can think of to conserve power. I used to have around 50% of battery life left when I'd go to bed at around midnight or 1AM when I had Gingerbread, but now I have to stop and recharge at around 9 or 10PM. I start using the phone at around 6PM when my wife gets home as she tends to monopolize the computer- she's taking some online classes, and likes to sing along to YouTube to relieve work stress. So I'm typically on the phone and the web for 6 to 7 hours a day, and need enough excess juice to let the phone run idle all night so the morning's alarms can go off, and also to check the time if I wake up during the night.
There's no power outlet near our bed, so I have to do my recharging during the day (when I can use the computer), and besides, we have a bunch of dogs that might chew up the charger's USB cable- they already destroyed one. So I want to try to get 7 hours of web surfing/ebook reading, plus another 5 or 6 hours of idle/standby time.
BTW, I've looked at many of the ROMs listed in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1642480 but there are so many of them! So I'd appreciate suggestions from people that are familiar with one or some of these ROMs to help me decide which one to use. Cheers!

Question: is that a ROM? It looks like just a collection of apps, unless I'm mistaken. How would they help boost my battery life and get rid of Sony's bloatware? (I'm kind of a newbie.)
nope it's a rom. it's not in the conventional ftf file format because it's a zip that you flash with cwm. It's a rom that's had all bloatware removed and a bunch of tweaks. i'm not very technical but it does actually work
oh and use this app. it clocks down the frequency to lowest when your phone's locked, therefore saving battery

Jelly sandwich is a stock sony ics based custom rom! Without bloatwares from sony! Check out it's thread. It has detailed instructions to install the rom! I also recommend you change your kernel n flash advanced stock kernel to increase your battery life. Speaking from personal experience and based on the daily usage you mentioned i would say you would get around 20 to 22 hrs of battery life!

If you want full functionality (working Cam, working HDMI), here are the top ROMS, which I have tried, that are being developed/maintained/updated:
Xperia Pureness (Ice Cream Sandwich)
Ultimate HD (Ice Cream Sandwich)
Jelly Sandwich (Ice Cream Sandwich)
XGamer (Gingerbread)
I'm currently using Xperia Pureness.. I have XGamer on the other Pro.
Ultimate HD is great too. Check on the thread. The developer's really mature and I think he's cooking a great update to be released soon.
XGamer, being GB, is fast, stable and battery friendly. We're using an old device, we have to admit. The Pro is not as responsive on ICS as it is on GB. So you're probably going to end up with that. Ive read its great with games as well.
Jelly Sandwich is nice, I just don't like how it's presented. Too much hype. Too much bling bling :laugh::laugh: Once it was even "advertised" by the developer as Android 4.2. But it's a great stable ROM as well, just like the previous ones mentioned.
Anyway, I suggest you try the above four ROMS yourself because at the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference. Best of luck :good:

OK, I took a look at Jelly Sandwich but decided it was too confusing for my tiny old brain- there were several 8.0 files, then a bunch of what I guess were updates all the way to 8.5, and I didn't see any "do this, then do this" lead-me-by-the-hand instructions. So I decided to try Ultimate HD. Got my bootloader unlocked, flashed the kernel using Advanced Stock for Xperia Pro. Couldn't get it to boot into CWM recovery, so I ended up nstalling CWM ROM Manager from the Play Store and used it to boot into recovery through that app. Whatever works. Wiped my cache & Dalvik, did a factory reset, rebooted (then had to reinstall CWM ROM Manager again.)
Ultimate HD installed just fine (sweet AROMA installation screens made it easy to set up), then I upgraded online to 2.0.1 and reinstalled all my favorite apps- decided to do fresh installations from Play Store rather than backing up and restoring, just to be sure everything's new.
So far, so good- it's pretty fast and stable, as far as I can tell. I'll play with it for a couple of days and see what my battery life is like. Need to find out what those governors do.
Thanks for the advice!
OK, I've used Ultimate HD over the weekend. I've noticed a few wee glitches- no show-stoppers though. For instance, in Album when viewing a particular picture, I click Throw, and notice that I have no context menu if I press the Menu button. All that's there are Trash, Share and Back icons along the top, which I didn't notice at first. The Back hardware button doesn't function when on this screen, you have to press the soft Back button on the screen. I thought the Album app had locked up.
I had one crash, when trying to load a web page while synching with Google/Gmail. The phone rebooted itself. Only happened once though.
So far, battery life's not that great, but it's better than with Sony's official ICS. I may try out a Gingerbread-based ROM later on down the road and see if that's "leaner and meaner' vis-á-vis battery life. Meanwhile, Ultimate HD is pretty cool, so I'll leave the phone alone for now.

PACMan ROM
I've been running on Mang's Pacman Rom for the pro and its great. Its ALOT smoother than ICS on the pro. Its basically stock jelly bean 4.1.2.
After flashing the given kernel you have cpu clock control, so for battery saving you can decrease that i guess. Battery has been ok so far. And basically everything you need is working. You just need to download ICS camera from google play, as the stock jelly bean one isnt working for now.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1924719
Note: the cpu is clocked at 1.6ghz when you first boot the rom. you should at least change it back to stock 1ghz, huge difference in battery life.
Should definitely give it a try. you have to google gapps for 4.1.2 if you want to use google now and the other standard google applications.

hi, i am using sony xperia s with freexperia cm9.1.
the last few times i tried fxp cm10 and experinced a big battery draining. from 99% to 70% in just 3 hours and so on... it was in standby and i just used a few times in that time...
does anyone have the same problem?
i tried it withe the cm10 version 149 and 150 from fxp and i have still the same problem...
i can't ask here because of the "10-Posts-Rule"
when i install the rom, i clear the dalvik-cache and then flash the zip..
do i need to do something else?
The drain can be high at first let it settle and check the drain after you have recharged the battery 2-3 times.. And as always if you have bad 3G coverage it will drain your battery, I always have mine set to 2G, no DATA and no Location services(gps). If I'm only using my phone in a moderate way it lasts 1½-2 days.
Yeah I've been noticing this as of late. I'm having major battery drains and can't seem to find the cause, it's like literally less than 12 hours before I need to recharge?
I'm having the same problem as well... With the Stock Rom and CM9 i could work much longer.
CM10 is eating up my battery...
its not because gps, wlan or whatever..
i've these things always on (CM9) and the battery life is good, but not on CM10
however i'am now on DualCores StockMod and it's veeeeeerrrryyyyy goood
the only issue for me is low incall volume
to all try nova kernel
I'm using that it works good.
even fixes low in call volume.
nova kernel? is it only for cm?
gonna try it tommorrow when the world is still there :fingers-crossed:
" It is for JellyBean ROM such as CM10 and AOKP ONLY."
Use PAC rom and nova kernel. I get really good battery life with that combination. Its been on for 28h now and i have 34% left.

Can anyone please name the advantages of CM9 installed on our phone?
Currently i use Bagux 1.4 and I've noticed these pros against cm9:
Better battery,
No connectivity problems,
Camera works faster..
CM9 r5
I bought my Galaxy W has 8 days and I am already using the CM9, not sorry ...
Advantages:
1- It is ICS so it has more features and options. CM gives even more customizations to Android
2- It looks way better than stock GB
3- There are many custom kernels!
4- It has more attention from the devs, GB has WAY less attentions now.......
5- The theme option in setting, this means that you can change the colours of the rom just by installing an app
6- You will be upgrading to a rom that has been made by Sir Arco..........Enough said!
Disadvantages:
No FMradio
CM9!
arco68 is very good at it ... CM9 makes! The samsung is so ***** that left us in 2.3.6, but for that there XDA developers! : D: D

You can download Spirit Light, it's a FMRadio and it works greater than the original one for what I saw till now.. =)
i would say if you've used stock GB for a long time like me, you will find stock GB's interface to be more simple haha. But learning a new interface is never too hard so this is not much of a pro.
some even speculated that GB roms uses less battery than ICS/JB roms since well u know... GB has not much to offer xD! But I believe with more and more kernels developed within the ICS/JB frameworks, GB will also lose in the battery department.
So in conclusion, GB is outdated and should only be kept for preference purposes. (right now, I'm too lazy to migrate due to all the customization I have to redo and the ICS/JB rom still not finalized yet, yes I'm unreasonably demanding lol)
I've tried a lot of roms. Thought i will stick with CM9, but after experiencing wifi, data problems, battery drain, I've came back to GB Bagux rom, which runs smoothly for me and has no bugs or problems. I always change the interface with custom launchers, so looks of GB isnt an issue, since there is themes for its framework too. I think its better to have more free memory, than to run on the Edge of memory shortage like on CM9. And battery is definately better for example 1d16h on battery and 66% left. (didnt use phone much but still on cm9 it was 2-3% while deepsleep)
We can talk all day bout this topic. But in my opinion it really depends on what type of user you are.
In my case, i use camera a lot at work, i also use fm radio, and plays a lot of 3d games.
It's a mix feeling when you try those different roms. When i flashed CM10 i thought i was never gonna go back to GB.
JB brings new stuff, buttery smooth as they say, and it's the latest Android. But there are still bugs in the camera, and battery life isn't that good yet compared to GB. After using it for more than a month, i decided to try the latest GB update (2.3.6 dated December 2012).
I think i'm gonna stick with GB for the moment. Not until battery life is improved and those glitches in the camera are fixed.
To compensate the feeling of being outdated, i tried different launchers. I mean really different, like launcher 8 which totally mimics the windows phone interface. Looks can be easily achieved whether you are in GB or JB as there are plenty of launchers and customizations out there.
When it comes to performance, i managed to get the best of my current GB rom by carefully managing start ups and disabling apps which i do not really use. It plays all the 3d games i have with no lag at all. I do not overclock my phone, coz it will just eat up more battery.
Overall, i think my current setup is better and just what i need for daily use. It's quick, no bugs, reliable, and the battery can last 2 days with minimal use. So I'm satisfied and happy with it. For now..

if you want to try gb for gaming install the latest euro update XXLMI (december 2012). i think it performs better.
install "autostarts" from market and disable auto starting apps to save memory.
u may want to freeze system apps you don't use also with link2sd. this is what i did basically, without any other tweaks and i'm happy with the result.
same here ,,, im a big fan of link2sd apps,, i used to link all my apps to my 32gb class 10 mmc,,, so that my phone memory never gets full,, whenever new game comes,,,,

Performance
Best Gaming performance? Stock Rom (GingerBread) + Custom Kernel (Lupus v10 GB) for max and stable fps.
After a lot of time passing flashing roms, i found that all the "performance scripts" or "boosters" are causing fps drops in games, or they are placebo effects.
I tried flashing several versions of "Gin2JellyBean" but the only things i liked of this rom are the keyboard and the sound quality. Adrenobooster give me fps drops so i always delete it.
The custom rom that gave me best results after deleting Adrenobooster and init.d scripts is "Bane of Speed v4", that have almost the same gaming performance of the stock rom.
If the gaming isnt ur priority, you can go with Gin2JellyBean without Adrenobooster that have the best features.
