Apple has been trying to stop the sale of the Nexus in several countries.
If they want the source they can download it themselves. Compile a rom or two and flash it on their crap phone. Not much of a brick either. Who wants a glass brick?
let it be.

Where did you read this? Not that I doubt you, I just want to read it.
OP may have read this which is from Feb,
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57375847-37/apple-seeks-u.s-ban-on-galaxy-nexus/
Apple's legal scare tictacs (intentional) are to slow innovation, and nothing more. Apple isn't stupid; if they are asking for source code, it is to the closed source code contained within ICS (AOSP doesn't include all code). Good luck with that, I doubt Google will part with it without a fight.
Either way, this is more of a Apple vs. Samsung thing, because Apple knows it doesn't dare wake the sleeping giant and go head to head with Google.

Actually, not everything in Android is open-source. This is one of the reasons why Google asks custom ROM developers not to include in their ROMs the Google Apps but use a different package instead.

Dictionary, Google calendar sync...Android Beam....just to name a few. Check a Google apps package and see how much of it isn't 'google apps'.
I wouldn't worry. Apple and Samsung are close to their court date and then a settlement well likely happen. Both are great companies, they'll work it out. I think that was just for leverage for their main dispute, tablets and mp3 players. It's really just symbolic of our broken patent/copyright system.

I would like to think that Samsung would cooperate with XDA especially since they hired Cyanogen. If you check back then, Samsung actually leaked a million roms to the dev community. The issue with the Vibrant was that it used a file system called RFS which was a very slow file system. People would often joke and refer to the file system as REAL F*CKING SLOW. Samsung has now gained back their reputation with phones such as the Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, GS2, etc. I doubt they'll mess up with the GS2 because not only is this their flagship phone, but they want to continue building the reputation that was once damaged.

I'm holding off on messing with CM7 thinking that our phone is sort of on the cutting edge of Android devices and will surely have a version of CM9 becoming available in the not to distant future.
I guess the same could be said of CM7 but that didn't come true did it.
Am I kidding myself about CM9? Who does cyanogenmod develop for typically?
thanks.
CM 7 is awesome. Flash away now

maybe the free time is the problem. Cm is so mainstream now I think everyone who uses it should pay $20 or so for every version (cm6, cm7, cm9) If they were able to make money off what is really a worthy product they can be able to invest more time and manpower in their projects. Its a shame the more phones they support the harder it is
I agree. I also feel CM should move into creating a company with a large dedicated team of coders that actually work full time on CM projects.
As for money, $10 access to nightlies per device or something similar would make it viable. The project as it stands right now has over a million users I believe. $10 million per version of Android and access to nightlies should be more than enough incentive to do it. And a full time CM team would churn them out like clockwork.
I think that's a ludicrous idea. That destroys the entire spirit of Android deving, it's supposed to be open source. Although I haven't made any roms, or kernels, I am learning. I won't speak for everyone but I would never make people pay to get the roms I develop.
Firstly, some people can't afford that. Secondly, that wouldn't stop other people from distributing it. Or simply kanging it and distributing it to others.
If I've stepped on any toes then I apologize but I just think that charging people just isn't the way to go about this.
-We do what we must because we can; for the good of all of us, except the ones who are dead-
I want Cyanogenmod team to get paid for the work they put in however that will just kill the spirit of open source. Once money is involved that means they need to hide parts of codes else people would just redistribute them as freewares or cheaper alternatives which equals a lot of problems and headaches.
I'm pretty sure the developers involved love doing this and enjoy themselves.
Now back to topic, CM7 is surprising very stable on our S2 for an alpha release. I'm sure Samsung will release a ICS upgrade before CM9 comes out.
So I haven't had a smart phone long enough to know how the upgrade works.
If Samsung releases ICS for SHG-T989 will it be available to us or do we have to get it through T-mobile (with all the bloatware back inside)?
When the official ICS from Samsung come out is that when the ICS based ROMs like Juggernaut and Bombarider start coming out?

Only hired cyanogen himself. I'm pretty sure some things are confidential till released as well he would get fired if certain information got out.. Most likely samsung hired him for his linux skills not cyanogenmod. It just so happen he is the maintainer of cyanogenmod.

Well MIUI is MIUI so it is what it is. But with ICS you get hardware support.
G2x - 2.3.7 CM7
Transformer - 3.2 Revolver OC/UV
From the bottom of my heart... ----> **** Miui
Educate yourself!
I have to say that looks just about like past MIUI iterations. And I agree with what someone said earlier in the thread, the launcher does look quite dated. Quite frankly I never did like MIUI because I'm not a fan of imitating the iPhone.
God damn that music app is beautiful.
As much as I hate MIUI's lack of app drawer, I love how everything is skinnable and gets updated frequently with useful content.
Also they just seem to have a better handle on interface design than any manufacturer or in some places even Google themselves.
You are using Android, and you are on a forum called XDA-developers. Presumably you care a little bit about software freedom, openness, being able to tinker and not be limited by what some vendor tells you to do.
So what the hell are you doing with MIUI?

So you're telling people who take advantage of software freedom by using the software of their choice to not use the software they like?
Seems a bit counter-intuitive don't you think?
In fact the very idea behind the "freedom" of Android is the release of free source code for developers to do whatever they want with. The developers behind MIUI just happen to be making something you dislike.
Miui is actually pretty cool if you replace the launcher; the built in customizations are pretty in depth. I agree with most in that I hate the stock launcher and iPhone appearance, but that all easily goes away with ADW or Go!

I personally don't like Miui because its too much like iOS and less like Android but you are so wrong here.
I know bench marks are not worth much but I could get my Nexus S to score over 3000 in Quadrant using Miui. Only Miui. I could not get score's like that with other roms.

So just straight to 5.0? Nothing in between? Yeah I'm calling BS. Sure eventually there will be a 5.0 just as sure as there will be a MacOS Duckbilled Lion-Tiger-Bear snow something or another, WWIII, and Modern Warfare 12. That doesn't mean that's what will come next. There is less than a 1% saturation of ICS. What company in their right mind would do something that stupid. There's no way in hell Android can compete with iOS if Google pulls a move like that. Didn't they just get through saying something about dealing with the 'fragmentation' issue - this in no way will help that cause.

Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Yes, Honeycomb was tablet only, but now that they have unified everything with ICS, I don't see why they would break it into two separate versions again. Seems kinda backwards to me.
The next scheduled and/or rumored release is/has been dubbed, "Jellybean" -- however, that doesn't mean it will necessarily be listed as the fifth generation of the platform.
Perhaps, 4.5 or something in between.
Think of what was being suggested for the release of Gingerbread... folks thought it was 3.0, but they were wrong.
Besides, Google did state that in order to prevent further OS fragmentation, they were going to "slow down" production to 1 major update per fiscal year.
And look at the facts involving those of us with ICS being considered the 1%ers, that wouldn't be in their best interest to continue progression, while leaving those who are yet to receive ICS on 3rd generation Android handsets, behind.

Since they will have identical hardware, the G.E. rom can be dumped and turned into a custom rom with ease I assume. S4 will have 100% stable TouchWiz and AOSP (so to speak). I'm speculating as I haven't looked too much into this though.

I see pros and cons with the google s4. While it will be great that the device will be up to date with the latest android, the vanilla android won't be able to make use of all the hardware features the device has to offer. But a big con with google s4 is that it only comes with 16GB internal storage.

The obvious difference will be that everything will function properly.
There is ALWAYS something broke or not quite right with AOSP/CM Ports. Bluetooth, tethering, camera... you name it.
So...its obviously a little different than... "why not just flash CM or AOSP now!?"... Official Google support for the S4 is a HUGE deal.
This means nothing for me. I'm not about to pay for a device that I can do the same thing with my already owned sgs4. Flash an aosp rom. But maybe it's more than that I would assume

So...its obviously a little different than... "why not just flash CM or AOSP now!?"... Official Google support for the S4 is a HUGE deal.

Whose to say this device something won't be broken. And it's quite obvious stuff will be broken but that's okay with me for any rom. I know I can expect a fix a lot faster.
For me, it's an overpriced and enlarged Nexus 4.
It lacks all the Samsung features (I know some people don't like that). It only has the vanilla Android on it which will have the same features as the Nexus 4.
Why do I need to pay $649.99 for the phone which has the same features as the one that only cost $299.99 (Nexus 4)? I know S4 is bigger, faster, blah blah blah but it's $350 different.
On the other hand, with AOSP rom available, for sure we will have better 3rd party ROM such as CM, AOKP, etc. I am actually happy to see that.
P.S. I am just sharing my opinion. No offense. =]

Im thinking its because they know that devs will make it possible to odin stock touchwiz to the nexus s4 and activate the sensors which is one of the big highlights of the phone.

So you're saying people are going to buy the nexus S4 just to flash to stock tw? Makes sense

No more like samsung is trying to protect their investment. Imagine if they sold at the price of a nexus and you could odin stock rom. People would be saving 300+ bucks while others paid 640 and up. Its just a matter of being fair.

The aosp roms I've used have all been very stable for the most part. Just because Google will be releasing it does not mean it'll be completely bug free. I just don't find it exciting if it's not utilizing all the new tech Samsung has added.
No one really knows what's in store, but losing the ir blaster and the other sensors' functionality seems like a step backwards imo. I've owned all the nexus devices and have flashed aosp ROMs on every phone I have owned. It just doesn't excite me on this S4.
I actually like touch wiz this time around (minus the cartoon ui and bloatware).
