I'm preparing for a move from the Samsung Galaxy SII to the Epic2 4G touch.
SG2 has been great. Modifications have been crazy easy and plentiful. Samsung upgrades have been readily available.
I know Sprint has been fairly good with upgrades to the Evo3D.
I've heard there have been issues with Modding and upgrades to the Epic.
With Cyanagens alliance with Sammy, I have hope things will move fast with this device.
I really would like input from the Epic forum on your prediction on
1. The likelihood of the Epic II being rooted readily (like within 30days), and 2. the EPICII getting timely upgrades .
Unfortunately, we Epic users mostly feel like the red-headed step child. It may because we have a keyboard and that makes things more difficult to dev and port.
I won't really get into everything, but overall I wouldn't think there will be as much support for the Epic 2 as other dual core phones.
Thanks for the info.

I would disagree. I think the development and support on the Epic Touch will be way better than what we had on the Epic. The Epic suffered because of the keyboard which made porting difficult, also because of it's release time being too close to that of the Evo, yet far enough away where people who got the Evo right away couldn't get the Epic because of the 30day rule. I would never use the smaller size of the Epic community to judge what the Touch community will be like.

I totally agree. Its a huge seller internationally. I was on a thread with 2 million views and over 1400 pages. I think this will be a popular phone. It does come with 2.3.4 stock and an 1800 battery intead of the international's 1650...and a bigger screen. The Epic is kind of a niche phone. There aren't a whole lot of physical keyboard phones anymore. Don't get me wrong...my Epic has been very good to me. I would like to see a developer roll call thread to see what device they planned on getting though

The Bottom line is which phones will the Devs buy and upgrade to? They will develop for the phone they have. Unfortunately they don't have access to all the phones that come out. So the real question needs to be asked of your favorite DEV as to which phone they may upgrade to.

I'm holding off on messing with CM7 thinking that our phone is sort of on the cutting edge of Android devices and will surely have a version of CM9 becoming available in the not to distant future.
I guess the same could be said of CM7 but that didn't come true did it.
Am I kidding myself about CM9? Who does cyanogenmod develop for typically?
thanks.
CM 7 is awesome. Flash away now
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
there is no use waiting on CM9 it wont be ready any time that soon. CM7 is great flash it! remember that the various dev teams are not getting paid beyond some random donations for this. and this is all done on their free time.

maybe the free time is the problem. Cm is so mainstream now I think everyone who uses it should pay $20 or so for every version (cm6, cm7, cm9) If they were able to make money off what is really a worthy product they can be able to invest more time and manpower in their projects. Its a shame the more phones they support the harder it is
I agree. I also feel CM should move into creating a company with a large dedicated team of coders that actually work full time on CM projects.
As for money, $10 access to nightlies per device or something similar would make it viable. The project as it stands right now has over a million users I believe. $10 million per version of Android and access to nightlies should be more than enough incentive to do it. And a full time CM team would churn them out like clockwork.
I think that's a ludicrous idea. That destroys the entire spirit of Android deving, it's supposed to be open source. Although I haven't made any roms, or kernels, I am learning. I won't speak for everyone but I would never make people pay to get the roms I develop.
Firstly, some people can't afford that. Secondly, that wouldn't stop other people from distributing it. Or simply kanging it and distributing it to others.
If I've stepped on any toes then I apologize but I just think that charging people just isn't the way to go about this.
-We do what we must because we can; for the good of all of us, except the ones who are dead-
I want Cyanogenmod team to get paid for the work they put in however that will just kill the spirit of open source. Once money is involved that means they need to hide parts of codes else people would just redistribute them as freewares or cheaper alternatives which equals a lot of problems and headaches.
I'm pretty sure the developers involved love doing this and enjoy themselves.
Now back to topic, CM7 is surprising very stable on our S2 for an alpha release. I'm sure Samsung will release a ICS upgrade before CM9 comes out.
So I haven't had a smart phone long enough to know how the upgrade works.
If Samsung releases ICS for SHG-T989 will it be available to us or do we have to get it through T-mobile (with all the bloatware back inside)?
When the official ICS from Samsung come out is that when the ICS based ROMs like Juggernaut and Bombarider start coming out?
Complete utter retartedness , CM team work's for samsung & samsung can't sell OS , niether could CM if they wanted too .

Only hired cyanogen himself. I'm pretty sure some things are confidential till released as well he would get fired if certain information got out.. Most likely samsung hired him for his linux skills not cyanogenmod. It just so happen he is the maintainer of cyanogenmod.
If i had to pay for cyanogen i would never use it.

This is just for fun, cause we all know Sprint is gonna sit on it as much as they can before finally giving it to us...
But how long do you think before the OFFICIAL Premium Suite Update gets released from Sprint?
Keep comments related to the Sprint or the update itself please. In other words... ON TOPIC.
Like I said before I think late march or april. I just hoope its not like the epic were it was a great phone and they just left it in the dust. So beside this other question would be how long do u think s3 will be a flag ship phone for sprint

I will say officially from sprint in may 2013 from xda devs in January. The s3 was there flagship device but no more iphone 5 and optimus g and galaxy note 2 took that crown. I highly doubt samsung care about the us version, we are only a small fraction of there business.

I think it's funny that no matter how well Sprint handles updates, people ***** about it. Correct me if I'm wrong (people always do), but wasn't Sprint the first carrier in the USA to push out Jellybean on the S3? Has anyone in the USA gotten the 4.1.2 updates for their S3 yet?

While I agree they were relatively "quick" with the last update compared to other times, I've been with them long enough to know they take their time on a LOT of things, not just updates to devices.
Aside from that point, it's my personal opinion that Sprint (or ANY carrier for that matter) shouldn't even have their hands in the updates released for the device at all. They should have their own software that is required for the device to activate and function on their towers and service and that's all. If you don't have their software, it won't work, simple as that. Whether or not they add additional requirements for their software to function properly on the device is up to them as well, as it's their own software and their service they are providing, but the fact of the matter is that it's NOT their device. So as to the updates to the software and functionality of the base device, that shouldn't be at all for the carrier to decide.
Think about it from a different angle... What if Steam or Skype or some other software as a service type company said that you couldn't apply an update to Windows or update your video card drivers or sound drivers until they release their own approved copy of the update or driver... You'd laugh at them, right? I mean seriously, how silly would that be?
Now, they can RECOMMEND that certain drivers or updates NOT be applied until they are fully tested, but they cannot force their own copies of the same updates/drivers upon you.
Not trying to start a full out debate here, but just my own thoughts on the update release process and something for people to think about.
Also, there's no need for vulgarity, no one is "*****ing" or "jerking each other off" here. This is just a poll and a calm discussion about the update and hopes for how soon it will be. Please keep it clean or I will have your posts removed. Thanks.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.2 Jelly Bean Update Gets Stamp Of Approval

Honestly, I remember back in the Epic 4G days when Samsung had the reputation that they did not support their devices, but it appears they've changed their attitude and now they're releasing updates like mad, even more efficiently than HTC is (at least for CDMA-based devices.)
If this is true, then the Samsung devs in charge of CDMA development will start porting it over to our devices. Perhaps we'll see RDFs in the next few days?

I had an Epic as well and it seemed like Samfirmware was our only hope. I share your sentiments and look forward to any changes Samsung is willing to make with regards to device updates.
I'm from the OG Epic as well (from its release to the s3 release); It is really refreshing to see them pushing out the updates for this phone!!
I too am from the OG Epic. People continuously blamed Samsung for the slow updates for it when in reality rdfs were being generated and test releases sent to Sprint almost daily and within weeks of the international update. I think the less intrusive touchwiz allows for faster updating. So hopefully we will see some rdfs reported soon.

Also a fellow OG Epic user ... boy I miss that phone (still drooling over that keyboard), but also love my GSIII. Nice to have the OG Epic family reunited here. If Samsung releases a 4.2 update for the GSIII in the near future, I'll take back all the bad things I said about them
hah what are the chances that 4.2 gets released before the s4 marketing train comes rolling through town

What was the wifi bug? Just curious because I've never run into issues with wifi.
Is it me, or has android development been rather low lately?
With the HTC One and Galaxy S4 being the best phones on the market, I was expecting there to be loads of roms and lots of aosp roms.
Is it because the phones just came out?
well people are still receiving units and people are sitting tight for the 32 and 64 gig variants. just be patient and within a few months development will be in full swing.
plus its not like we dont have great roms now, so its not like we are missing anything (accept maybe halo from paranoid android, but thats it)
revolt is basically the P.A.C roms, and cyanogen mod already has nightlys for our phone
Could be. I'm no dev but I can imagine it being impossible to make an awesome, non crappy Rom so soon while having a personal life and a job to balance. Luckily this phone is cool enough stock, minus the bloatware of course

it is indeed time consuming when factoring in life away from a computer and i'm a guy that lives on a computer basically.
when speaking with the dev team i work with, most of them skipped the S4. they're either staying on S3/Note 2 or they went for the Oppo Find 5, Nexus 4 or are waiting on Nexus 5/Note 3. because Samsung is starting to stray away from being dev friendly with their locked bootloaders and not releasing source for Exynos variants, most of us are fed up. this will likely be my last Samsung device because of this.
also, this is the T-Mob section which is pretty much the smallest carrier of the big 4 here in the US. most of the team i'm a part of are on ATT like i once was...
i wouldn't be surprised if not much more comes down the pipeline for us. there will be more, just not a lot more.

ITs not just the locked bootloader but also making unrootable stock kernels, putting the imei info in a spot where it can be erased. You have to understand that we here are less then 1% of the users samsung targets.

Killa has a point. although i haven't witnessed this in full force here in our sections yet, i have been witness to it many many times.
then there's also the fact that other devs seem to think that new devs are their "competition" and that it is a "popularity" contest. this almost caused me to throw in the towel. i am humble. i do what i do because i want to learn and run my own stuff. i then share my creations in case anyone else would like to run it as well. nothing more, nothing less.
the T-Mobile section has certainly left a bad taste in my mouth in comparison to the ATT section where everyone was extremely friendly.
What happened?
I put out a FULLY WORKING stock base to help move development along give it time
^^And thats one hell of a nice banner^^

Just wait until the Google Edition GS4 drops, then we'll see some development, since it's an M919 as well
