It's all over the news, but really seems to be rumor at this point.
It wouldn't surprise me if they announce it at Google I/O but I doubt it would be out before Q3.

So just straight to 5.0? Nothing in between? Yeah I'm calling BS. Sure eventually there will be a 5.0 just as sure as there will be a MacOS Duckbilled Lion-Tiger-Bear snow something or another, WWIII, and Modern Warfare 12. That doesn't mean that's what will come next. There is less than a 1% saturation of ICS. What company in their right mind would do something that stupid. There's no way in hell Android can compete with iOS if Google pulls a move like that. Didn't they just get through saying something about dealing with the 'fragmentation' issue - this in no way will help that cause.

I can see this maybe happening in Q2 next year. Maybe... And the qwip about it being optimized for tablets- isn't that what Honeycomb and ICS are for? What optimization ??
Epic-ly tapped from my Galaxy S II
They are just calling it 5.0 now, google hasn't confirmed anything to my knowledge so I bet you it will be something like 4.5 or something in between. Though it could be 5.0. Not that it really matters either way, it will still be a new update.

Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Yes, Honeycomb was tablet only, but now that they have unified everything with ICS, I don't see why they would break it into two separate versions again. Seems kinda backwards to me.
The next scheduled and/or rumored release is/has been dubbed, "Jellybean" -- however, that doesn't mean it will necessarily be listed as the fifth generation of the platform.
Perhaps, 4.5 or something in between.
Think of what was being suggested for the release of Gingerbread... folks thought it was 3.0, but they were wrong.
Besides, Google did state that in order to prevent further OS fragmentation, they were going to "slow down" production to 1 major update per fiscal year.
And look at the facts involving those of us with ICS being considered the 1%ers, that wouldn't be in their best interest to continue progression, while leaving those who are yet to receive ICS on 3rd generation Android handsets, behind.

most of the cool stuff in ICS is already in some version of sense already. What I'm really interested in is seeing what HTC does with ICS.
I can imagine its gonna look sick. They did a good job putting it on honeycomb. That looked real nice, but on ICS, it could only look amazing. Then again, I LOVE HTC sense. It's gorgeous

This is dumped from the SDK, so don't ever expect anything truly usable to come out of it.
^ I was going to ask how this would be different from the source, but that makes sense if it's from the SDK. That's just used to make apps and such correct?
Well, couldn't you take the code used to write the apps and use that to figure out the code for ICS??
Just curious since I know nothing about this stuff.

ICS is supoose to be a stock android experience. Google has said that ICS is to end fragmentation across the various handsets. Differing UI such as touchwiz, blur and Sense do nothing but slow down updates to people's phones. I'd be shocked if Google allows its partners to slap a new UI on top of ICS.
FWIW, I successfully installed the two VZW apks over mine (I'm on CM7 #105) and have rebooted since. Everything seems to be working fine for me still. My phone network still recognizes my location just fine.

Nexus phones are designed to run stock Android, but I've read nothing specific about ICS itself being mandated to be stock and only stock. The only specifics Google has offered as to the fragmentation issue is an agreement with manufacturers/carriers to support new devices with updates for the first 18 months which, honestly, doesn't accomplish all that much. Given Android's update history, that'll generally only guarantee one OS version upgrade, two at the most if the phone is released at the right time to span two OS releases.
As for disallowing custom UI's, again, I've read nothing suggesting Google plans to restrict this. As it's one of the primary ways each manufacturer differentiates their product, I'd be shocked if Google can, or has any interest in, doing anything about it beside the aforementioned pledge of 18 months of support.

So i reading that if you are @ CES now, you have challenge your phone vs an window to see which is faster and if you win you get $100 and if you lose, you lose your phone and get an windows phone.
so can the epic beat an win7 phone?

Exactly But how do they think that we lose our phones because then how are they supposed to activate that phone under account with pushing the 2 years im so confused on that part. and the UI is so different the damn WP7 phones are a screen with blocks ; oooh so great looking almost like 8-bit haha. I guarantee their roms are like what 20 mb's haha they have nothing compared to android.
And if they do a speed test like quadrant forget it they lost haha.
I could downgrade to Froyo and use Old Goodies and get over 4000 on Quadrant. LOL they wouldn't know what hit them
its an win-win. if the epic is faster, you get 100$ if you "lose" you get an new phone. you can play with the new phone for an few months and sell it later. the value of that phone should be alot higher then epic. there is no losing.
@ XxLostSoulxX: i would think you activate the @ CES and then they recycle your phone.
it doesnt say what the test are but sure ms figured that they will lose few 1000s but win when more ppl are using these phones. cuz you may like it after using it.
and yes, there is an keyboard one,4 the keyboard ppl.

No way will this device have jellybean by quarter 3. This device doesnt even have an official ICS build and that came out early quarter 4 last year. If samsung does release Jellybean for this device it wont be until probably around this time next year.
Think i remember reading somewhere that jellybean is tablet only. Besides why would they release another os update for phones when ics has barely started to appear on some phones.
What was it 2010 when honeycomb released for tabs.. ya then they're due for another os update.
edit: guess it could be for both phones + tabs..

Ice cream sandwich WAS supposed to unify the Tablets and phones but I dont think it is going the way that they want it to. So from what I have been reading Jellybeen will be another attempt at unifying both device segments.
Rumors are rumors for a reason. Because people make **** up about others to make them look bad to make themselves look better. Rumors are rumors, and that's all they will ever be. Guaranteed there will be at least 10 more rumors about the next version of Android before Google I/O 2012, maybe more. You know why? Because rumors are rumors and that is all they will ever be.

Yes, and it's all just speculation, but I mostly meant that we probably won't see any official development for our phones till long after that if it is announced then.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I think your looking way too far into that, for anyone who is considering this, they will announce it, maybe, but that's all your looking at; Google telling you what their working on. It's gonna be April and devices are barely coming around to ICS, let alone the E4GT, well officially....
Even *if* it is released in Q3 I doubt Samsung will roll this out for the GS2 and variations unless there is a very (read: cost-effective) reason to do so. It would be very close to the end of the average 18 month support window. Need further proof? Look at the Galaxy S/i9000 and see if they're getting ICS officially. (So far the word I've heard and seen is "no.") Then again, did the original Galaxy S sell even close to as many devices globally versus the GS2 and all variations?
Regardless of the official decision down the road, I'll bet that even if Samsung doesn't roll out any newer releases for these devices you'll probably see people take the initiative and do it on their own. The Linux kernel will probably not have another version update before then so drivers and other components from ICS builds should hopefully fit into JB.
That's my speculation on it, please don't treat this as anything but.
This is just for fun, cause we all know Sprint is gonna sit on it as much as they can before finally giving it to us...

While I agree they were relatively "quick" with the last update compared to other times, I've been with them long enough to know they take their time on a LOT of things, not just updates to devices.
Aside from that point, it's my personal opinion that Sprint (or ANY carrier for that matter) shouldn't even have their hands in the updates released for the device at all. They should have their own software that is required for the device to activate and function on their towers and service and that's all. If you don't have their software, it won't work, simple as that. Whether or not they add additional requirements for their software to function properly on the device is up to them as well, as it's their own software and their service they are providing, but the fact of the matter is that it's NOT their device. So as to the updates to the software and functionality of the base device, that shouldn't be at all for the carrier to decide.
Think about it from a different angle... What if Steam or Skype or some other software as a service type company said that you couldn't apply an update to Windows or update your video card drivers or sound drivers until they release their own approved copy of the update or driver... You'd laugh at them, right? I mean seriously, how silly would that be?
Now, they can RECOMMEND that certain drivers or updates NOT be applied until they are fully tested, but they cannot force their own copies of the same updates/drivers upon you.
Not trying to start a full out debate here, but just my own thoughts on the update release process and something for people to think about.
Also, there's no need for vulgarity, no one is "*****ing" or "jerking each other off" here. This is just a poll and a calm discussion about the update and hopes for how soon it will be. Please keep it clean or I will have your posts removed. Thanks.

Also, there's no need for vulgarity, no one is "*****ing" or "jerking each other off" here. This is just a poll and a calm discussion about the update and hopes for how soon it will be. Please keep it clean or I will have your posts removed. Thanks.

So what does everyone think the next version of android should/will be called?
So i think they should call it Lemon Drop, but i have a feeling they might go with Licorice.
How about lollipop?
I'm gonna guess we see 4.5 Kitkat at I/O
Android 5 lollipop seems likely for October

Well I remember everyone said k would be key lime pie. It may as well could be but we got kit Kat from Google and blindsided us all lol. Whatever popular name the community thinks the next os is going to be called. You can bet Google won't pick that.

I was thinking the same thing but I'm suspecting that they might go back to their old style.

Lemon meringue. Nom Nom Nom.
Well if they do stick to branding, my vote is for Laffy Taffy.
+1 for Laffy Taffy
++1 for Lemonheads
Other ideas
Licorice
Life Savers - nice with a marketing tie in to added fitness functionality
Lemon Drops

I think it will be called Lemon Pie. I hope the next version would be able to feature adjustment for resolution because this phone can really be optimized on getting smaller icons without deteriorating qualities. Also improve the imaging services. But I guess this phone is really made for me. Very satisfied!
We went the route of pie when kk was unnamed. Think they want something that can be made in to the android dude. So an android dude made out of twizzlers is possible. Whatever it is I hope they keep making android better and better. Kk was by far the best os so far.

I would agree to stay away from Lemon.
Maybe Life-Saver or Lollipop, but I think Licorice might be the winner.
I hope they don't continue down the brand name road. Just feels wrong for some reason. If they do maybe jolly rancher. Andy riding a candy horse lone ranger style. Lol. Otherwise I'll go with wintergreen or fireball.... Oh great now I want a candy bar. Curse you evil thread!

Everyone says lollipop right now.
