[Q] Rooting Help

i m new to andriod
i have s-off my phone
Wildfire S (T-Mobile)
and i want to root it
but there are few question i want to know about
1-can i move unmoveable apps to sd card too?
2-if in case i brick it is there a easy way to unbrick it

if you use things like app2sd and link to sd yes you can put apps to sd. also you can get custom roms that have apps to sd already enabled.
and that depends on what kind of brick. if you get a soft brick, you can try to fix with a ruu, usually as long as you can get to the bootloader you are ok but if you get a hard brick your f***ed. you would need a jtag- used for modifying software on the chip- and they don't come cheap and are not much use without the knowledge of how to use it.
with that in mind though, hard bricks are usually quite hard to do. only times ive ever really heard of it happening is when people flash the wrong radio files or bootloader files. since you have s-off (i assume by xtc clip) be warned that your phone wont give you any warnings if something is wrong or will kill it, radio and bootloader wise.
but. if you are only rooting the odds of you bricking are low, allowing you follow guides properly ect. hope this helps you keep informed

like when installing custom firmware you should not press anything or remove the battery and connect anything with it
if you did it gets brick without that there are 5% chance it will brick
so mostly what are the reasons which cause andriod to brick

well, most of the hard bricks come from flashing system stuff that is corrputed/for the wrong phone/ not built right. ect ect ect
with soft bricks it varys usually flashing stuff that then doesnt work is peoples most common mistake. alot of people think that theery brick there phone when they flash a new rom without deleting the caches ect and the get stuck in a boot loop.- a bootloop is where the phone gets stuck booting up an cannot get past it. easly recoverable
the best way to root for you is going to be by getting the clockworkmod recovery image, flashing it to your phone and then flashing the superuser script from the recovery.
so first download this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213229 after youve downloaded this place it on the root (not int any folder) of your sd card.
then go to the bootloader (i assume you know how since you xtc clipped your device) and your phone should find the pg76img.zip then push the up button to flash it. that should be successful and the phone should reboot. after this go back to your bootloader, and scroll down (using the volume buttons) to recovery. select it and your phone should boot into clockworkmod recovery
now i suggest that you perform a nandroid backup. a nandroid backup is a complete copy of the system image, your rom/apps/contacts/txt messages, the lot. everything is copyied and saved as a backup, so if things go wrong you can always go back to it. i recommend you do a backup before you try anything, just so you can always roll back to it
so scroll down to backup and restore and select backup. make sure you have like 500mb of space on your sdcard just to be sure you have enough space.
after that you will want to go to here http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip and download that. same plan again, put it on the root of your sdcard and then go back to recovery.
this time select install zip from sdcard. (or something like that) then select CHOOSE zip. then choose the superuserzip you downloaded and select flash it. when this is done reboot the phone and wait for it to boot fully. when its done go into your list of installed apps and when you see the superuser app you will know your definatly rooted
discliamer as with everyone else here i take no responsibility if this kills your phone, slays a dragon, turns into a wizard or blows up into a neutron star lol but if you follow this guide you should be fine. pretty noob proof.

i will try this btw using the chrager is ok or not?

I used this rom when i rooted my Wildfire S using this root tool. It worked great! Try it. Hard-Bricks is pretty hard to get, and the chance is not so big.

i just forgot one question
do i need to format the sd card or its ok without it?

It should be fine without formatting if its the one that came with the phone also what do you mean use the charger? A. Make sure the phone has full battery and b. If you mean for transferring the data to the sdcard then yes of course

hey i tried to root and first time in the boot menu i was able to update it but it just keeps updating every time i go to bootmenu
and it dosnt go down so that i can select recovery please

Remove the SD card while you turn off the phone. Then go into recovery, insert the SD card while the phone is on.

btw if i use a wrong app or not compatible custom rom or some other stuff will it cause my phone to brick

A hard brick is usually caused when you flash wrong bootloader or radio files.
A soft brick, usually caused by flashing wrong custom ROMs can be recovered easily.
Just read carefully before you do anything with your phone and you're good to go.

i think alot of the app data is self contained tbh mate. do you mean so you can extract the data and use it on a different rom or like an app2sd type thing?

Problems With GNex

Hi all, I have some problems on my gnex.
This happens because I think I have deleted some system files.
1st problem: when I install a rom at the first boot the phone gives me this error: "the application speech engine Google has locked in an unusual way"
2nd problem: when I open camera or gallery the phone gives me this error: "no external storage available"
3rd problem: sometimes the phone gives me the error: "youtube application has locked in an unusual way"
Ok...there are too much problems...just a question now: I want to reset ALL my gnex, I want to delete ALL the files there are in it. I can't do it flashing a new rom or formatting system from recovery. How can I do?

need more details
Without some more details on what ROM you are having these issues with, which recovery you're using, ... it's kind of difficult to help out... That aside, when you flash a new ROM, be sure to first do a full wipe through the recovery. I've flashed my phones numerous times over the years and every single time I had a problem at first boot it was because I didn't do the full wipe. Also, carefully read the instructions posted on the first (and second & third if any) thread, usually the dev explains carefully which steps are necessary to succeed.

I have these problems with all roms, recovery cwm non touch and i always do a wipe before flashing roms
Now I just want to know how to delete every file in my phone and come back to original

That's odd... Maybe something wrong with the device itself in that case... To go back to stock, the easiest way by far is the GNex Toolkit. It has an option to download the Google image & lets you easily flash it.

Well that depends what you mean by that... What it will do is flash the stock ROM that is made by Google onto your device. It will replace the current installed system with the stock one. It will be like when you first got the phone, with the default ICS installed. Obviously a device without a system installed on it would be useless, unless you're looking for a new expensive paper weight of course .
If you still have the same problems after that, I'd recommend returning it to the shop you got it from for a repair/refund. Don't forget to re-lock it though if you decide to go that way .

The problem is that with root explorer i see two folder about storage: sdcard and storage>sdcard0. I think i have deleted some files in these folders. Is there a way to reset their files?

/sdcard & /storage/sdcard0 both refer to the same, namely the internal memory. No way to recover deleted data though. What exactly did you delete??

Flashing the stock image will return all your files to factory. You don't need to delete anything.

Use odin or fastboot. Kits are easier but i trust fastboot above all. And do a backup before flashing anything...tag way can restore. Then factory wipe, then format cache, then go to advanced and format dalvik, THEN flash the ROM

The toolkit uses fastboot... It just presents you with scripted menus and composes the correct command depending on your choices. Makes it a lot easier to get stuff done without having to remember all the different commands .

Are you sure? So i have to flash the stock image?

Without more info on what exactly you deleted it's hard to say. Flashing stock should work for restoring the phone though .

Ok so the last question: i remember i had imm76i when i bought the phone. I have to flash that? Where can I find?

Just use the toolkit I linked to earlier. You can make it download the latest google stock image and flash that one.

[Q] TWRP Recovery Will Not Flash or Restore

I really hate to start a new thread but I really can't find a reason/solution to this issue. It's just as the title says. I tried flashing the MIUI ROM just as any ROM and got a failed error. Then went to do my nandroid restore and it just hangs on the splash screen (boot screen). Anyway I thought there could be a bad download so I took out the SD and redownloaded synergy on my laptop, then put it back in the phone and nothing but the nandroid should let me restore. I even tried moving the files to the internal SD and nothing. The only thing I can think of is to Odin back to stock? Is it the same method as rooting? I'm sure I can find that out, but I'm just confused why it seems TWRP doesn't want to work. Thanks for any help, it's 4 a.m. here and I'm dog tired.

Are you on the latest TWRP?
If all else fails you could go back to stock and root again.

Can I just reflash recovery from the state I'm in, or do I still need to unroot? I've moved some of my files to the ext SD within recovery but some things won't move and I really don't want to wipe it.

Do you mean reboot recovery? I can't reboot system. Sorry, not trying to split hairs, just trying to be specific.

are you able to flash a different rom, say a stock rom? It's possible you got a corrupted TWRP download.
Since they just released another update 2.4.3, you might want to try and download the zip file, wipe cashe and davick (may want to do it three times). Reboot back into TWRP 2.4.3 and see if it gives you some better luck.
I've had Nandroid backup that didn't work for whatever reason. I didn't test it prior to needing it, and got burned. It just wouldn't show up in the restore menu.
On a side note, what error did you get when you tried flashing MIUI?

Yes, that's what I did. I'm just bummed I had to wipe storage. Oh well, it's inevedible... I dig that sig though, with phone line up.

I tried multiple ROMs, but not a stock one. Hmm, I was on 2.3.2.3. I did'nt get a special error, just said a red message saying failed.

Ok, I was'nt sure. I just went back to stock. I just wanted to know what exactly was going on and why.

The only thing different on my phone is I got a 32 gig SD card. I transfed some of my files a couple days before doing anything of this. That's the only thing I can think of. Even after root/unroot it STILL won't do my nandroid restore. I had so much time and work into the apps I set up, games, ect. Really freakin sucks. I even went into the the TWRP backup folder and made sure the backup files were there before doing anything. I never even got to flash many ROMs, I kinda just stayed on Jellybomb.

I had the uTorrent app installed and I noticed that it changed a lot of files with the "u" in front that the uTorrent app has. Anyone know why that is?

It was my first to unlock and root my phone, followed by flashing a stock ROM (Which is exactly why I rooted it)
I flashed this JB 4.2.2 stock build [ROM] [OTA][GSM] Android 4.2.2 JDQ39: Rooted | Galaxy Nexus > XDA for my Galaxy Nexus
Now...
I can't disable Next-word suggestions in the Language & Input -> Google Keyboard Settings
Also, I noticed a few seconds of lag when pressing the power button to unlock the phone, when viewing recent apps (via the soft-key), and when opening the Camera too
Also, when I choose the "Recent Apps" soft key.. it's as the app that's currently being used is minimised and the homescreen is shown without any icons
The Build came with Busybox pre-installed and now its gone after a day of using my phone... I literally can't find it.
I searched in the play store "BusyBox" and the result is 3 different apps with the same name!
Any Advice?

go back to recovery, format/wipe /system partition, reflash rom.
For your reference, a good app to install bb is stephen (stericsson)'s busybox installer (play store link). Obviously, it needs root.

How do I get “root”?
If you are booted into a custom recovery (recoveries will be covered later), root is enabled by default. If you want root while booted into Android, you will need to place two files on your system partition: an “su” binary which grants root access, and a superuser app that manages that access. The two that are available are ChainsDD’s Superuser and Chainfire’s SuperSU. Usually these files are packaged up in a zip file that is flashable using a custom recovery, but they can be flashed manually using ADB. Both of these methods will be described below.

You can wipe the system partition in a custom recovery (dont know if you can with stock). And yes you could flash via ROM manager but I wouldnt recommend it. I am on XenonHD 11.1 and loving it. But roms are a personal choice so there is no 'best' ROM. Just try out.

You can wipe the system partition in a custom recovery (dont know if you can with stock). And yes you could flash via ROM manager but I wouldnt recommend it. I am on XenonHD 11.1 and loving it. But roms are a personal choice so there is no 'best' ROM. Just try out.

The tutorial I followed didn't mention using the ROM manager, but I had not choice.. becuase whenever I went into fastboot mode manually, it got stuck on the screen displaying Google (I waited for minutes without any luck)
How would you recommend CyanogenMod 10.1.2 against the stock 4.2.2 which I have currently?
I read these threads as well whereby they said that there is no "real" solution to the issues:

If you read it, you'll stop thinking you need to be doing anything at this point in FASTBOOT interface! Like mrgnex says, you need to be on a custom recovery to format /system. (Have you read the link yet? By now you should know that the /system partition and the /sdcard/ (aka userdata) are 2 different things!)

For your reference, you can't erase /system in stock recovery.

I'm still confused though.. "Fast boot" and "Recovery" are they the same thing?
I tried a "fix" mentioned by someone about using a live wallpaper such as "Water", I tried it and it's been 1/2 hour and it's really smooth compared to before...

So to get things clear:
No fastboot and recovery arent the same thing.
Vol up+down+power brings you into fast boot and not recovery.
Apparently you dont have 2 custom recoverys since you booted into cwm.
Cm10 is great. But there are many great roms out there. You can start off with cm and then (if you please) look further.
I dont see any reason to not install cm10.1.2 since a whole team built and optimized it. So basically it is a better stock.

I'll download CM10.1.2 tomorrow and will decide to install it once Stock JB 4.2.2 starts acting up again.
In the meantime I'll read on about kernels, please keep don't close this thread...yet.

I've decided that I will test out the Rom that I have currently (4.2.2) for a few weeks, and then flash CM.
I wanted to know one more thing, Is it bad to flash ROMs to your phone every now and then?
Because I've seen people flashing different ROMs on their phone, I don't wanna damage my phone as I want it to last as long as I can make it.
(by "Bad" I mean... does it reduce the phone's life or it's hardware's life span)

No it can't. I was a flashaholic (until I discovered XenonHD) and my phone didn't got worse. Only overclocking the CPU and gpu can affect the life of the CPU or gpu (or both XD). Just do a fresh install everytime and read the post of the ROM of your choice to see what to do to get it working optimally. If you have any problems just ask.

I'll flash CM in a week or two, as I'm on a tight schedule currently, and I also wanna note down the average battery time I get out of 4.2.2

So... since 4.3 is now out, I was thinking it'd be better for me to flash it other than anything else.
I'll most probably download the stock rom from:

With the stock package there is no need for a toolkit.

What was I thinking...
I apologize guys... I guess I wasn't thinking straight as its past midnight here...
So just to clarify stuff so that I don't end up doing something wrong:
-> Head into Recovery Mode (with usb debugging enabled... connect usb cable to phone and pc)
-> Wipe System
-> Wipe Cache
-> Install from SD card (select .zip file)
right?
Also, I performed a backup of the applications I have via Titanium Backup, They'll work on 4.3 when I restore them right? or do you recommend downloading them from the play store again?

backup everything from your /sdcard to your computer, titanium backups and a nandroid
the google stock package is NOT flashable in CWM/TWRP
if you follow the GOOGLE instructions it WILL wipe your device (remember that backup you made of everything?)
alternatively you can make sure and have adb/fastboot working on your computer properly, extract all the files out of the zip (including the tar.gz located inside), and in recovery, do a factory reset, then boot to fastboot, fastboot flash system and boot ....
as for Titanium Backup, there is a work around to get it working on 4.3, but root is lacking full power.

I took a backup of my apps using titanium backup, I installed it but can't use it, it says I need root (which I already had before).
I read online somewhere that I need to root again, but I don't wanna lose all my data/ apps I installed again...

According to a friend's recommendation I used Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit to Root, and surprisingly didn't lose any of my data!

[Q] URGENT HTC One M8 Telus Model Is Bricked?

Hi, guys, it's currently 1:36AM and I am ripping my hair out and I'm on the brink of crying because I think my HTC One M8 is bricked.
I successfully rooted my device a few hours ago and I managed to flash a GPE Rom. A notification told me to update to 4.4.3 and because of my stupidity I clicked install and it brought me to the Team Win Recovery Project v2.7.0.2 again (the page with the install, wipe, backup, restore, mount button etc). I panicked and tried the same procedure to flash my rom by wiping everything but the problem was... the GPE zip file was not there. I don't even know if I made a backup of the original sense os.
I don't have anything. I don't have the custom ROM, I don't have my sense ROM and I feel hopeless. I'm sorry for getting so emotional but I feel so confined and trapped and I seriously don't know what to do, tears are actually drenching my face.
Please, if anybody could help, I would be so so so thankful... I'm a novice and I barely know anything so really specific steps would be appreciated.

On the website it says to make sure device is in USB Debugging mode? I can't access that because my device has absolutely no os on it. My phone is not recognized by my computer as well when I plug it in unless adb makes a difference?

Power the phone off, turn on with power+vol down, use volume keys and power button to navigate in hboot. Go to recovery. There you can use sideload to put any ROM onto the device.

Thank you very much! Just a few more questions but the person in the video says to flash TWRP in the command lines but what if I already have TWRP? Can I just skip that step? And I have something called **TAMPERED** on top of my boot loader, is that dangerous?

Yes you can skip that step and tampered on top of boot loader is normal don't worry about it

Thank you so much again!!! I'm just waiting for this SDK to install so I can run the ADB shell! Hopefully this works. I will be flashing the GPE rom, hopefully there is no problem with that?

Alright. If you are able to flash the ROM and it boots up make sure to make a backup just in case something like this happens again

After you check off wipe cache and wipe Dalvik cache and slide to start sideload, can you start flashing ROMS during that process? Or do you have to wait until the wiping finishes?

Wait until the wiping finishes then adb sideload

Also If you have an external sd card, you can simply put a rom on that using an sd card reader and your PC. and flash the rom from your external SD :good:

Via recovery of course.
This has helped me many times.

1, if you can boot into recovery, great
2, if you have an external sd with card reader for PC, great
3, power phone off and take out sd, and using card reader, put rom on external sd
4, re-insert sd card into phone and reboot into recovery using power and volume down and in hboot screen go to recovery.
5, to make sure, do a full wipe of system, data anc cache/dalvik cache
6, flash desired rom and reboot
7, should have worked and saves time not messing around with adb sideloading

And regarding the wiping and sideloading, wtfsykhang, isn't the operation together? If you go into advanced, you have to option to clear cache and clear Dalvik cache and you start that by sliding the sideloading slider.
