[Q] Is root required to do a Nandroid backup?

n00b question alert!!
I pretty sure you need root to do Nandroid via clockwork but wanted to double check.
The reason I ask is that I wasn't rooted and tried to do backup and it failed on backing up /data. When I tried the second time it failed on backing up /boot_image
After it wouldn't boot so I flashed stock ROM using Mark's tool, I am now rooted and have clockwork but don't want to try again cause I can't be bothered to (re) re-set-up my phone
Any help would be appreciated

Rooted and flashing are two different things.
Rooting is a pre requisite to do everything else.
After being rooted, you need to flash Clockwork Recovery (via ROM Manager, fastboot). I'd recommend flashing the Clockwork Recovery Touch Enabled as it's pretty cool, it's being updated continually so make sure you get the latest version and check back.
When you're in Clockwork, do a nandroid backup in there.

Yes it should. Boot into recovery. Go to advance, then to backup. Viola. Nandroid.

Yes that is correct. After installing clockwork mod,
1. wipe factory, cache, dalvik
2. flash ROM
3. flash kernel [if you choose to]
4. reboot

And if you ever need to update the ROM (same ROM, new version)
1. Clockwork Recovery
2. Wipe Cache and Dalvik (Optional.. but I do it just incase) -- DO NOT WIPE FACTORY
3. Flash ROM
4. Flash kernel (if you already did as the ROM will override your kernel with the one supplied in the ROM)
If you're changing ROMs (one ROM to a new ROM by another person) .... do the same steps, but wipe factory too.

Yes that is correct. The Galaxy Nexus does not support "external sdcard" thie phone itself has a "internal sdcard" with internal storage of 16GB/32GB (depending on what model you have).
It's the same as any other Android phone, its just the sdcard is irremovable. That's all, just put the contents in /sdcard/ (you can put it anywhere you want really... its just having it in/sdcard/ makes it easier to locate... if you wish to put it in another folder then when in Clockwork Recovery, press install zip from sdcard and go into that folder and then select the .zip)

thanks for the info. this is my first time with rooting and installing new ROM on an android. i was able to do a manual update to 4.0.2, but now knowing this i can do more. =)

Hehe, glad to see you being risky and doing it all it's really not that complicated. It's just a matter of listening to instructions.
I'd highly recommend a app like Titanium Backup (get the Pro version). It will backup and restore all of your apps within one-click.
This is a necessity when changing ROMs. Saves all of your apps and data so there will be less work when you change ROMs.

You do NOT need to root your ROM to do a nandroid backup. Assuming you have CWM installed, a nandroid backup will work. Rooting your ROM has NOTHING to do with installing/using a custom recovery like CWM...

interesting that would be a good program to look for. i have another one which restores all of my SMS backup.

I don't believe you have to be rooted, just to make a nandroid backup in fact I know this for sure because I did it, you do however have to have your boot loader unlocked.
What I did was the following:
1. Download CWM Image.
2. Restart into fastboot mode
3. fastboot boot cwm-xxxx.img
4. Nandroid backup
5. To restore follow the same process.

so im just wondering once you have rooted the galaxy nexus, does it have an app for software? sort of like Cydia for Jailbreaking the iphone?

No. There is no need. You can side-load apps on any Android device, even without root. Root is only required on a Nexus to use specific apps that require it.

[Q]Creating a backup before I root my GIO

hello, i just got my first android phone so I'm new to this sort of stuff, though I love being able to unlock hidden potential of different devices, so naturally I discovered the ability to root smart phones and all that good stuff.
The model I have is the Samsung Galaxy Gio GT-S5660M. It's running 2.3.4. Gingerbread version.
I've been reading a lot of guides and for the most part rooting and adding additional utilities like flash, etc. seems pretty simple. However, I have not yet been able to find out how to create a back of up of my stock firmware when I bought the phone in case I end up bricking it, or decide I want to return to stock.
I've read many guides that claim to show how to create back ups and recovery points, but I'm still having trouble understanding it.
To be more specific, I would like to create as opposed to download, a back up of the phone in it's current state which is, as I said earlier, stock. I did a factory reset since I had some stuff installed while I was fiddling with it for the first time.

You have to root it before you can back up stock rom so, firstly you root it (you can find guides here on xda)
Then install clockworkmod recovery: warning: DON'T EVER USE ROM MANAGER TO INSTALL CLOCKWORKMOD ON YOUR GIO, IT WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE!! use one of the recoveries found in xda, you will also find guides to install them there.
Then third; backup in clockworkmod using "backup and restore"

so first of all, what I'm looking for is called a ROM right?
what I don't get though is how come I need to modify the device before creating the backup. Isn't the phone modified at that point? Or is the stock configuration being stored somewhere on the phone that I can't see without clockwork?

You cannot create a backup without the recovery mod CWM Clockwork Recovery Mod. But to install this you need your device rooted (modified so you can modify and view system files)

1 - you don't need to search for a rom to backup your stock rom
2 - you need to root your phone in order to be able to backup your rom
3 - you need to install a more advanced recovery (program "similar" to pc BIOS) in order to do a nandroid backup
4 - after you flash that more advanced recovery (aka CWM -> ClockWorkMod), you backup your rom in "backup and restore" menu, backup. It will then store your rom in a folder.
5 - you should strongly consider after that, to install a custom rom made by many of the devs here on XDA in order to have a better experience with your phone...

I've already uploaded a stock ROM backup last fall of the same Gingerbread ROM you're running, along with instructions on how to make one yourself or flash mine.
The best advice I can give you is: research, research, and more research.

I use px-cwm-v2.zip recovery.
You flash it using stock recovery.

Also, whats a good rom to consider upgrading to? Something that has the ability to play flash videos.
EDIT:
If I understand correctly, roms are basically whole operating systems that have been customized by the developer. So a rom can be already rooted and have clockwork as well as other custom stuff, and I just need to flash it. The alternative to this is to do everything manualy... root the current OS, add clockwork and whatever else. Correct?
Also, I'm not sure yet if a rooted phone has any extra options on it's own, or if it's only a set up that's sole purpose is to allow other applications to be installed who then will give the user better control over his device.

I've run into a little problem.

I've got Odin and the tar downloaded, but when I go into download mode with my phone and connect it to the PC, it says that the device driver was not successfuly installed, and I get no confirmation in Odin that a connection has been made between the phone and the program.
What am I missing?

Nevermind, I needed to install Kies. Don't even need to run it. Apparently it has the driver that's needed.

Okay, I've rooted my phone successfully. Now the next step is to install Clockwork and create a back up.
Now that I understand a little bit the way Odin and flashing ROM works, I think it would be better to just download a stock ROM and in case something goes wrong, I can just flash it the way I flashed the rooted one.
(I think I saw a completely stock ROM somewhere for my model but I don't remember where. A link would be appreciated if it exists.)
Correct me if I'm wrong pls.
Also, if I do that, then is there any reason to install Clockwork since I've read that many ppl have issues with installing it and it's riskier than rooting or installing other software.
Right now I think what I'm most interested in is installing Adobe Flash Player 11 or something of the sort that can play flash videos and streams.

I'm using Opera as my browser so from what I've learned, flash doesn't work with it period. Is skyfire a good alternative?
Also, like I said, I don't think I need the clockwork if I can get a clean stock ROM that I can just flash if something goes wrong. As I don't intend to download many apps or add many phone numbers (memorized instead), a backup isn't really needed.

Clockwork is not riskier than other things you do. Just follow steps and you see no problems.

its an older version, its 5.0.2.7, theres also 5.0.2.8 but these give some problems after installing/wiping, so some people still use the older version.

I'm new here. I have the same problem as anonxlg. It says can't mount system. I also used the version from the big thread for new users. Can anyone enlighten me on what to do? I've been searching the forum and google, but can't make it work. I feel like a compleet noob now, and I don't feel special about it.

Edit: I kept searching, and finally found a working 5.0.2.7 version. First I had another 5.0.2.7 version, but when I tried to install it didn't work. I finally found "signed_cwm-5.0.2.7-flashablezip-ext4+rfs.zip (Flash from Recovery)" on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421650 (through google actually. I have to get used to this site), and I'm making my backup now.

i used the cwm linked and backup worked, i tried installing cm9 beta8 (galaxyics), and it would get stuck after samsung bootscreen (it flashes a white pick or soemthing before full back screen)
i tried restoring backup i made, and it didnt work, some mount error again
i reverted back to 5.0.2.6 and did the restore backup again, and this time it goes up the the galaxy gio gt5660m screen and just stop..
note that i do not know what the rfs/ext4 is for for the gio if that is what is causing problems

I have a GS3 SGH-I747M on rogers. The last one I was trying to get Cyanogenmod 10 on kept getting (Status 7) error. Nothing screwed up at all, until I attempted to unlock the boot loader with some stupid app that said it was safe wit my phone. I finally got a new one, found a solution to my issue (I have to use a different version of clockworkmod) and was wondering if it is safe to do. I mean no chance of risk if I follow instructions (no bricks, etc).
TL;DR: I have an SGH-i747M on rogers and want to out cyanogenmod 10 on with no chance of brick. Could you give me instructions on how to, or tell me if it is safe/unsafe?

Second, I have Cyanogenmod 10 and I can say that it's playing safe so far - the only disadvantages that you would have are: Samsung's gestures are not functional and CM10 is kinda unstable for games and apps. I also experienced the Status 7 error and from experience, it's caused by using an 'old' version of CWM Recovery. Download the latest one from here (Samsung Galaxy S3 AT&T): http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager and download the Cyanogenmod 10 M2 from the CM site.
Assuming that you know how to setup the custom recovery for your phone, delete the current recovery.img on your phone and replace it with the new one that you downloaded. Then just do what you did to setup your custom recovery. I also suggest that you follow the ROM flashing guide on this page: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_III:_Full_Update_Guide as it is what I followed to ensure that a brick wouldn't happen on my phone. Just a reminder, also wipe the Dalvik cache just to be sure.
TL;DR Flashing and rooting is safe as long as you're patient and you thoroughly follow guides on rooting/flashing your phone.

I don't really recommend that as that could cause unwanted trouble. From my experience, I just followed the rooting guide that I posted, flash a custom recovery, and flashed the Cyanogenmod 10. Another tip, if you don't want to lose your contacts, make a backup of it before flashing a ROM. Preferrably you write them in a paper so it would be easier. If you have important messages, use an SMS/MMS backup tool to save them. As for applications, make a list of applications that you consider are essential for you so you could just redownload them. Starting out in a custom ROM is really hard at first but you'll get used to it.

Its safety is directly proportional to your ability to follow directions.

Your first mistake was you used the app to unlock the VERIZON S3 bootloader.
All other versions of the GS 3 have unlocked bootloaders.
You should definitely do some more research before you attempt root and custom recovery.

Can you just use ROM Manager after rooting and flashing the stock ROM to download CWM, then CM10? And is the CM10 you're using on your Rogers phone compatible? I don't see a Rogers version on the CM site. Did you use the AT&T one?

Yes for the ROM manager, but the free version doesn't install latest touch recovery. The at&t version is compatible with all Canadian i747m. You can get the latest version here: http://get.cm/?device=d2att

What does touch recovery do? And do I have to use that link to flash it, or can I use ROM Manager? And if I were to use that link, I would DL the zip, boot my phone into download mode, plug in, open Odin, make sure auto reboot and F reset time are checked, load the .tar into the PDA, and click start? What happens to the previous ROM that was there?
And when I first root my phone, and load the stock rom, do all of my apps remain? I haven't rooted yet, for my Rogers phone.

A touch recovery lets you touch the screen as apposed to using the volume rocker.
You will keep all your data.

Thanks for the help! Another question, if I would like to unroot my phone, and decrease the flash counter, is there a thread I should see for the I747MVLLH1? I know about triangle away, but Rogers/my model isn't supported for that.

Does flashing a new ROM erase the previous ROM? And 'wiping cache' doesn't wipe your data/apps right, only 'wipe Data and Cache'? And I don't really need to bother with kernels too right?

If you going from stock to cm10 wipe everything: cash, data, dalvik cash. Don't flash kernels unless you want to overclock and undervolt, cm10 comes with kernel and I get pretty good battery life with it. You can flash from ROM manager, and yes it will erase your previous ROM, so do a backup before flashing.

The backup that I would do through ROM Manager, thats just incase anything goes wrong right? It's not to get back my apps once I flash from stock to CM10? Other than manually installing them after flash, is there any way to quickly get back my apps/files?

Yes it will ask you if you want to wipe, if you download cm10 ROM from ROM manager it will ask you if you want the latest gapps. You can get ROM toolbox or titanium backup to backup your apps and restore them after flashing rom. Backup is just in case but you can always flash stock ROM later if anything goes wrong.

You should probably flash through your cwm recovery instead of ROM Manager, but yea you can do a backup in recovery or ROM Manager, and I recommend Titanium backup it's easy to use and free.

[Q] How to go from 4.0.3 Jedi Mind Trick to Cyanogenmod 10.0.0 Stable Release

Hello all just bought a new Samsung Galaxy SII from craigslist already rooted with 4.0.3 Jedi Mind Trick. After reading for what seems 4-5 hours i have been trying to put together how to properly without bricking switching it to 10.0.0 Stable as i use to use Cyanogenmod 2-3 years ago on my devices. Seem alot of things have changed and there is a cluster**** of stuff out there now. If you could direct me to a how to or show me how to do it i would greatly appreciate it!

Assuming you have nothing personal to back up that you can't just download from google play or your google account again: download cyanogen 10 and it's gapps. reboot into recovery mode. factory reset, wipe data, wipe system, wipe cache, wipe dalvik. pick the install zip from sd card or so option, browse to cyanogen, then install gapps the same way. wipe dalvik again and reboot.

I was thinking of doing this myself JMT to CM10. I didn't think there was anything special to do same as flashing from any other ROM to CM10. If there is a special requirement I would think they'd post in in with the ROM post information.

so I attempted to install it and got stuck on the boot logo for 20 minutes or so. So I bricked it lol... Anyway I just flashed it with Odin to 2.3.5 but the link to download file for root capabilities is broken. What can i do? Do i have to go to ics first before i reattempt to go to 10.0.0?

honestly - i backed up everything to my external and then formatted the internal when i went from TW to AOSP for the last time. well worth it. nice folder clean up and then you can just manually take all the stuff you want back.
and you should just be able to odin on cwm or twrp - then flash the rom of your choice.

trying to look up how to do that now .... Searching the forum now... Might you be able to tell me real quick how? I already Downloaded the 5.2 file they suggest to use but can't find a working toturial that is just for flashing the cwm.

If you get stuck at the boot logo, it's called a soft brick. You don't have to use ODIN or go back to ICS. Just make sure the ROM zip you downloaded isn't corrupt (check the size/m5d if possible), wipe everything, and reboot into recovery to try installing again.

You won't fail. Follow the guidelines step by step. Print it out, make notes. Anything. Read. The step by step guide works... that'll get you with cwm. Then, you can flash the zip you will put on your phone... either a SU zip or just a rooted ROM. Follow flashing instructions.
Just realized - you'll be way better off if, once you have cwm on, just format the internal ONCE YOU HAVE A ROM ON AN EXTERNAL SD CARD. then flash CM10. THEN you'll have a fresh AOSP install.

how long does the boot logo stay on for?
Had 2.3.5 - rooted via odin and have recovery 5.2.6 - did everything in proper order and wiping properly.
what am i skipping here? Still spinning taunting me, wish there was a way it would tell me if i did something wrong.

Update your recovery to twrp or cwm 6+ and don't use dark side scripts

Please excuse my harshness but this is not as hard as many make it seem. I would say if it takes you more than a couple attempts maybe it is just not for you. I only say this because I would hate to see you mess up your phone. Now if you think a bootloop is a brick then we need to do things at a slower pace with you.
If you already have your phone rooted then
1.download goomanager from the playstore and then
2.open it up and allow it to grant permission from CM
3.hit menu button while goo manager is open
4.click on install OpenRecoveryScript
5.let it do its thing
6.reboot into your new TWRP recovery
7.Wipe/Data Factory Reset
8.Flash Rom
9.Flash Gapps
10.Reboot
You can throw in a backup of files somewhere in there if you like.... Your choice

I had a bootloop when using CWM v6.0.1.5. So a friend of mine told me he had success with CWM v6.0.1.5 Touch. So I switched to the touch recovery and... SUCCESS.

A boot loop could mean a bad download or bad flash but it is most definitely NOT a bricked device. All you needed to do was get a fresh download and move it to your SD card by mounting it in recovery. Then, wipe EVERYTHING but the SD. EVERYTHING. Then flash the ROM, Gapps and whatever radio. I go from CM to AOKP to other random TW roms all the time and never have issues.

The 2 best recoveries are twrp or my favorite because I'm used to it is cwm 6.0.1.5. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1844637
Also if your phone boot loops don't freak out' just either reboot to see if that works out first and if not reboot into recovery. Also with these new recoveries do not use dark side scripts.

Format cache
Format data

Sorry for the necro on the thread, but I didn't want it to be stated I didn't look around some either.
I am going from JMT to CM and want to make sure it's as seamless as possible. I use CWM and usually usually use darkside complete wipes, but I read in a previous post not to use darkside. Is there a reason for this? I can't see why this wouldn't work as it's just a wipe.
Also I use Titanium Backup. Is it possible to backup my apps and data and restore them since its not TW any longer? I want to be able to restore as much of my data as possible and make sure I don't lose it.
P.S. - If thread necroing is not appreciated, I apologize.

I just bought HTC Desire (Htc_bravo) and Im quite unhappy with its bloatware. Im currently looking for some ROM and since it would be my first to flash, I need advice. What Rom is easy to flash and start living on (eg. market app included) with minimal chance of something going wrong (bricking mobile, boot-looping...) and with rather high battery life. Something to flash in a few minutes and live happily ever after. My needs are that of a common user. English localization is a must, working wifi is wanted. If manual how to flash this particular ROM is found somewhere, it would be great as well.
I was unable to find here a topic which answers my question completely.

Try MildWild. I have been using it for the past year, and it's fast and stable, with a simple launcher.
Don't worry, you won't brick your phone by simply flashing roms.
You are rooted, aren't you?
Then:
1. Download the rom, and put it on your sd-card.
2. Boot in recovery.
3. Do a Nandroid backup.
4. Do a full wipe (data, cache, dalvik cache, system, sd-ext) (Sd-ext is not the sd-card. If you don't know what that is, and want more storage space, check the partitioning guide in my sig.)
5. Select "Install from sd-card"
6. Wait.
7. Reboot.
8. Wait more (10 minutes)
9. Play with the rom.
If you don't like it, or something has gone wrong, then restore your nandroid backup.

Oh boy, here we go again. You'll have to root and s-off before you do any rom installing.

UPDATE:
Rooted it, S-OFFed (Through CWM), partitioned (through 4EXT) succesfully. Im ready for flashing MW. However, I figured out, that those two (CWM and 4EXT) could be messing up , when both installed at the same time. Just dont know, how to uninstall CWM and if it is necessary. When I run Recovery mode, 4ext says, he is in safe-mode and that he doesnt have acces to "system" partition. Should I worry about that? There is every wipe available but system wipe.

When it is in safe mode just wipe all except sdcard and reboot recovery then it will have access to all partitions
