What happened?! Help please

I was installing a 4.2 build along with 4.2 gapps.. Something was funky so I wanted to re-do it. When I went to flash the zip from internal sd card, it wasn't there. Nothing is there. All my backups are gone as well. I tried to restore, and it says it can't find any files. I can get into recovery mode, but I have no clue what to do from here?!

odin back to stock once that is done reboot into recovery and factory reset then start over this happened because your recovery is outdated

Yes, there are 3 files when I go to choose zip from internal sdcard... They are:
0/
legacy/
obb/

if i remember right 4.2 moved all your files to 0 because of multi-user support thats where all your files are if you can move them back you should be able to get to your backup

Ahh okay. I found the zips to reflash 4.2 so I'm just going to do that. Didn't see any of my backups though? Are those somewhere else?

not sure exactly have not used 4.2 yet just read up on it do a search in the thread you got the rom in and you will find a answer

I'll try looking. Because I have to restore. None of my stuff from Titanium Backup is there anymore. All my stuff is gone, except pictures, those stayed.

Boot loop - I think.....
I was running cwm nightlies for a year or more, i was using rom manager to update the nightlies on a regular basis with no issues, then i went to the stable cwm10 rom with no issue, again with rom manager, now after a while of enjoying that, I tried to return to stock and lay low for a while, I just backed up everything with TB and flashed a stock rom using odin, well now my gs3 just sits on the samsung logo as it pulses, this does not change, I have tried to flash and reflash the stock rom and others, i have tried to flash and reflash stock recoveries and custom recoveries too. I just dont have the needed knowledge or experience to get passed this issue, until i get it fixed, i have nothing.......... : (

i cant get into recovery..........
i can get into download mode, but not recovery, is there a technique to force it into recovery ?

what button combo are you trying should be volume up+power+ home and let go of power soon as you see the blue print at top of screen do this after a battery pull

wow, that seemed so easy, i have used root and custom roms and recoveries for so long now, that i completely forgot about the default way to get into factory recovery, it worked and now i am up and running, thanks for the support dude, i have never wanted to go backwards but now it is ok that i did,

Every time I reboot Apps/Data go missing [HELP]

Alright I going keep this simple. I checked all over the forum and can't find a sollution. My devs told me to come here and told me no one else has this issue.
Following is my specs. s3, running twrp 2.3.3.1 have sense it came out. I have a 32 gig SD card patriot. I am running super su (note that)
I use TB backup normal. I run inverted Gapps, normaly.
My attempts to fix.
Did a clean install, format system, factory data reset, cache, dalvik in TWRP. I installed rootbox, I installed normal Gapps 20121212, then
Get to home screen I dont reinstall anything except
TB backup, Root Tool box, and updated super su (which might be installed wrong)
anyways I reboot to back up when there done and poof Roottoolbox is no longer there, though icon is still there. Missing app.... icon still there WTF
TB lost its cousin TB pro (key) but TB is there.... wtf
Oh and super su lost its update as did gapps updates
All missing
Also I can reinstall apps restart again and BAM apps missing again same ones same updates.
Is this something I could of done in android comander? I use droid manager and droid explore too..
Never had a issue back on 4.1 jellybam I flased a few roms 4.2 roms..
baked bean, aokp , cm10 tried them now im on rootbox
I did flash the broken jellybam 5.1 a bunch times trying get to work (shrug) dunno if that matters and I flashed from 4.1 to 4.2 a lot of times
I assume some folder got moved its like my system picks apps to move to certain places
OR maybe I installed backed up apps with android comander somewhere i shouldn't so now I can't install them again (though flashing clean install should fixed everything)

I never had a issue that clean install didn't fix so Im worried. I still have old backup on my computer of before the problem started but there 4.1 roms and I don't wana compound my issues so I wait untill I get reply to try anything crazy

I think I know whats wrong I explored a bit and i dunno my data/data folder is FULL of old stuff I guess I asumed it got cleaned out with system wipe in TWRP
So my question is .... assuming im going to do a reinstall what should I wipe to clean out my system folders? I don't want to clean my SD card just the system I want a true fresh install thank you

my advice to you is clean up all partitions by using odin to flash back to stock, reroot, custom recovery and start flashing again. seems like your partitions need a cleaning bud, I'm 99% sure this will solve your problem.
p.s. wiping in recovery is not the same thing as odin back to stock, a full odin flash back to stock will fix EVERY partition on your phone and really clean things up. You can even do a full wipe after the odin to stock to really make sure your system is clean.
also use sdmaid (root app) to clean out your sdcard of crap

Any chance you got a link to advise me on how to do that? I havn't ever gone back to stock...

Get your stock firmware 4.0.4

root and install custom recovery afterwords using the toolkit

once you boot up just factory reset inside the rom, reboot into recovery (toolkit will do it for you if you choose the setting) and start flashing again

also, I think you should format your sd card, just back up ALL your important stuff on your PC and move it back after, you will REALLY clean stuff up big time,

Last but not least I have my stock backup before I started flashing that isn't going to help right? Whats ever messed up im going need to do this all the way right?
Anyways I figure it can't hurt but I gotta make sure I get perfect directions I can follow but if I have guess on anything im doomed. I downloading the stock file now (I think right one its ATT) doesn't say d2att but I assume ATT means that all 3 recoverys are for d2att

Funny this problem effecs so few apps just a couple I must done something wrong. I don't get how anything can live past system wipe in TWRP... I mean it deletes system files right? They get replaced by my new roms files I thought but instead they seem like they get left over every time i wipe... I dunno why. If this don't work im using my warrenty
how come i cant just wipe data then install a fresh rom off my sd card? or could my recovery be messed up also.... (dam) i guess this makes sense oh well lol

T999 is tmobile
that should help you out, also, the odin flash covers every partition. kernel, rom, modem etc. you will need to flash a custom kernel after your rooted and have a custom recovery. I would do a little bit more research, flash the rom in my sig (my own rom) when your up and running and use it as a daily driver untill you figure things out a little bit more with some good ol reading :highfive:

that was a long download. I know what im kinda doing. I done same thing on my S2 reverted it to sell. The only difference is my S3 is a girl about things. my s2 could take anything.
Anyways I had a long night.. i dunno what problem IS but I think has to do with me having android comander and backing up my APKs to my computer and my phone. and reinstalling apps with bolth programs.
Its so easy to use Android comander that I dunno maybe I been installing apps in wrong places and it finaly caught up to me
Or maybe phone defective.. *shrug* dunno others had my issues too but no fixes really. Nothing solid.
I give your idea a try but I did just wipe data, wipe system factory data and bla bla nothing helps it still happens. the same dam 3 apps too... over and over jezzzz

If I format everything in Twrp all my
system/system/app folders
system/data/app folders
data/data/ folders
And so forth do they get delete and new one put in there place
do they get over written and merge with the ones from last rom
nothing happens to them?
I need to know. And this Full Recovery via odin the guy above says to do will it really get rid of them? all Not leave stuff behind

Even though I installed newest TWRP sometimes its like Settings get left over even after a full wipe. Including data (did last night)
Did data, system, cache , dalvik, factory reset, I even formated SD card
Then reindtall rom downloded rom manager. restarted and poof gone and left behind short cut on the desktop
So wtf ? and settings won't stick they revert back default like it can't remember **** its been smoking weed i bet... dam phone

I took bolth out first trasferd exSD and formated on my computer... then after I did a DATA WIPE in TWRP which is a format of interneal sd card (correct?)
Just to see if help.. I ran SD maid cleaned up tons of crap... but still having issues... I dunno maybe its the roms and no one else noticed because they don't flash as much as me.... whatever this is going on its weird... Like I said its got something do with data from apps being stored in wrong place so when I update them they get sent to the wrong folder somehow but only some of them get sent there ( dunno ) then when I reboot they gone and I come back and my settings gone too... also when I flash a rom sometimes settings are picked for me already (then if I change them and flash again) they might be different... or I get settings from a old rom.. and I always clean flash btw

Reguardless of what I did to cause this what I don't get is why wiping everything and installing fresh rom doesn't do the trick?
Is there any other way to clean out all /system folders / data folders / root folders of crap and start brand new? beside above post?

Wipe data doesn't format your internal. You need to actually format internal. Cant remember where that option is. Might be in "wipe" or in "advanced" . BUT....it will wipe everything of your internal. What ever you have saved.... Backups....pics.

everything important is saved on my computer honestly I make lots of backups im a carefull person I been reading about corrupt EFS folders, and bad system directories and stuff....
Seems only way fix it go back to stock and go through your folders.... Once im stock again I hope I do this right (im ready to do it now) just ... feel like this could all go wrong
What do I do once im stock? Just wipe the phone? factory data... its the not having a custom recovery (with stock) that scares me so much... I rooted this phone with a program I didn't do it by hand so Im worrried I might not get it right *sigh*

Once your back on stock n rooted install goomanager and installed TWRP again.

Alright so im stock now. with root... Havn't formatted yet (no point) I already did that ... I know how this happned I think..
When I kept going from 4.1 and 4.2 I would get 0 folders so I took it and moved it back by just droping all folders back into the main drive so alll combine. It seemed to work but does sound possible? Would that casue issues with /root folder or is /root got nothing do with internal storage because I can't see it from computer

Thanks again for the information you helped a lot and I think that worked. I think its fixed. I can't be sure but its not happening at least like it was before. I prob won't know for awhile if its going to happen again for sure but Im optimistic. I mean what else can I do after this lol buy a new phone

[Q] Need help with flashing roms Galaxy s3

I tried flashing two different roms (synergy and chemistry) on my sprint galaxy s3. It turns on but then wont go past the "galaxy s III" logo. I just restored my backup and all is well but I really want to get multi window on this thing so I could really use some help as to what is not letting me boot up all the way. The last thing i messed around with rooting was my DroidX and with that it really mattered a lot which version of android you were flashing from. I have 4.1.2 the most recent update. Is that why these roms are not working? Any help would be much appreciated I am very excited to get a killer rom on this bad boy.

Did you clear /data, /system, cache, and dalvik cache before flashing? If not, what is your flashing procedure?
But no, the current version should not make any difference when flashing because you are clearing everything anyway

I boot into recovery after i put the rom on to my sd card. Then wipe the factory data, cache partition, and delvik cache. I do those steps twice, then install the rom. The install seems to go fine, it always says successful at the end, it just wont go past that screen. Does it mater which version of clockworkmod I use?

You need to wipe /system too. A factory reset only clears app data, and thats no help if you're not wiping the OS as well because you're installing the new one on top of the old without cleaning up first...and thats why it wont boot because different pieces are getting mixed and not together with the files it should be with

Thank you so much for your quick response. As far as I can tell, I am wiping everything I should be. I use clockwork recovery mod version: and the choices it gives you are: Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, and wipe dalvik cache. From all the instructional threads I've read, those are the only things you need to clear out before the install. My clockwork version is v5.5.0.4 which i think might be really old. Could that be my issue? Does it matter how I rooted it? I just tryed to put jellybomb v14 on it and it didn't even give me the galaxy s III logo. Luckily it booted back into recovery though. I really don't want to hard brick this thing.

Which recovery are you using?
For TWRP, I generally recommend formating system too.
Also, make sure to flash the rom zip and THEN the gapps.

Make the switch to TWRP v2.3.1.0 (newer ones I've heard have problems) but you will be thanking me later. It's way easier and much better than CWM... just an FYI for ya!

I suggest trying a flash with TWRP. If you are unsure how to install TWRP, just download the Goomanager app, then choose install Open Recovery Script. But, before you install or change anything, look around a bit on how to install it. Make sure you follow directions step by step. After you have installed TWRP, try flashing again. Good luck!

Haha, so it looks like switching to twarp is something that i need to do, I'll start researching how to do that. I don't thing clockwork is causing the issues im having, but I could certainly be wrong. Since my phone is rooted, that also means the bootloader is unlocked rite?

Samsung bootloaders come unlocked by default, so yes
Easiest way to switch is to download Goo manager from the Play Store and have it install TWRP for you
Generally speaking, CWM is great on most devices, but for the S3 it's TWRP that's the best and easiest to use
And when flashing new roms, make sure to always format system, it prevents corrupted files from showing up because you would be installing the new system right on top of the old one if you don't

So I did as you suggested. I installed twrp from the play store. I made a backup on there so I should be ready to tryn flash again. The only thing is I use this phone for work all the time and if mess this thing up I'm gonna be in deep doo doo haha. So with the last several attempts failing, I'm a little apprehensive to try again. I'm going to re-odin and flash a different root just to be safe (I used team epic v5). Can you guys recommend a good root to use for my s3?

If you made a nandroid backup in TWRP (I'd recommend to put it on the external memory, but that's just me), you should be good to try any ROM you want (only Sprint ROMS). Just follow CNexus's post (linked for posterity). Wipe system as well as factory reset, cache, and dalvik, prior to installing the ROM.

If you've already rooted, re-rooting isn't going to fix anything, so no need to go there.
As previously explained and detailed, do a full system wipe, and you'll be good to go.

It took me like 4-5 months to personally figure out that the problem was the kernel. You need to flash a kernel right after you flash the ROM. Either the stock kernels or better kernels like Anthrax will do. I know that for jellybomb, there's a kernel included in the Rom but for some reason,it got stuck on the gs 3 logo if I didn't flash another kernel.

Oh thank goodness there is something else I can try, I was out of ideas. Thank you!

I tryed the KT47 AOSP Jellbean kernel after flashing jelly bomb and it did the same thing it did before, black screen after flashing the samsung logo
Now I did go into fix permissions and it did say failed, is that abnormal?
This is my exact procces:
1. boot into TWRP
2. factory reset
3. system wipe
4. cache wipe
5. Dalvik wipe
6. Install from external SD: jellybomb v14
7. Wipe cache/Dalvik
8. Install Kt47 kernel
9. Wipe cache/Dalvik
Anything wrong there?

OMG HELP! Bootloop, download modes works, flashed with Kies and STILL bootlooping

I have the SGH-M919
I've rooted my phone and was running a GE rom
Everything was fine for MONTHS
Got in my car and plugged my AUX cable to my phone for music and the phone froze.
Force rebooted the phone and it started boot looping.
Rebooted to recovery (TWRP) and TRIED to wipe dalvik and cache and it FAILED, said it couldn't mount dalvik
Rebooted to recovery again and wiped all partitions and this time it worked so I proceeded to re-install GE rom, still bootlooping
Came home and tried to use ODIN to flash M919UVUAMDL and it failed.
Tried ODIN to flash M919UVUEMK2, also failed (sorry don't have the error messages right now)
Rebooted phone into download mode again and phone said there was an issue and to use Kies to recover
Installed Kies and started emergency recovery and that went through fine and the phone finished and STILLLLLLL BOOT LOOPS !!!!!!!!!!!
Copied the file that Kies downloaded (M919UVUFNB4) and tried ODIN again to flash that and it flashes fine but STILLL BOOT LOOPS
Obviously my Knox warranty flag is tripped and I don't have the money for the insurance right now.... so PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF BOB does anyone have any other diagnostic tips or tricks to help me figure out why the F this phone is boot looping.

Only Samsung can reset your Knox flag. You can't expect instant responses here. People read and answer the questions they know how to. Not doing a full wipe before installing a different ROM often causes soft bricks and bootloops. I would start there although that doesn't explain why you couldn't mount Dalvik. Try a different recovery. Many people have had trouble with TWRP. Philz Touch works well if you haven't already tried it.

I literally just had the exact same problem as you. I googled and found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265477, then googled some more and found my .tar file for my phone, then odined back to stock 4.2.2. It took 20 min.

1. Samsung WON'T reset my flag... they won't even TOUCH the phone in any way shape or form. I spent almost two hours dealing with them and being honest about the situation. And they STILL won't do anything at all. The rep I was speaking too even said the first thing they do is check that flag and if its popped, they put it back in the box and send it back with no further action. So I will not buy form Samsung ever again.
2. I'm not expecting instant responses at all and nothing I said should have been interpreted at such. I made the comment of 53 views in 4 hours and not a single reply ... I was hoping for a better ratio of responses than that.
3. Where are you getting "Not doing a full wipe before installed a different ROM..." I never said that I didn't... and if you read what I took the time to organize neatly, I specifically state that full wipe was what I tried BEFORE re-installing the SAME rom.
4. Can't try a different recovery if I can't even get the stock factory image to do an initial boot.

I've tried #3 but it gives me an auth failure....

Just ODIN philz on there. TWRP has given me issues on this phone off and on. Philz will let screw around in there. Your phone isn't dead, it just needs some love

Anyway... I flashed PhilZ on my phone, did full wipe, tried installing the same GE rom I was using... didn't work.
Tried installing stock rom, didn't work.
Tried flashing M919UVUFNB4 via ODIN... and it flashes fine but again, first boot wont work.

Ok so .... I guess installing PhilZ... then full wipe, then flashing M919UVUFNB4 TWICE back to back did the trick.... no freaking clue how but it worked

I spoke too soon. Went through first boot. Got all the way to the end setup and then it rebooted on its own ... and now its stuck in a boot loop again

Since your using philz, choose install new ROM, then go to advanced and wipe dalvik, THEN go to mounts and select the one close to the bottom, wipe SD/data or something..... This will wipe your internal SD, OK so then install your rom and reboot.....
I am starting to think you flashed a non GE kernel and didnt realize it You just got to give the phone some love, thats all. It knows when your upset you know.

The weirdness continues
sooo it started boot looping again. Then I rebooted to recovery (which obviously after flashing NB4, its no longer PhilZ) and did factory reset. Now its working again with latest firmware.
Also I flashed the GE rom from HERE in XDA and used it for like 2 or 3 months then it suddenly stopped working so I don't think the kernal was the issue... I'm so freaking confused

Flash something else, GE is boring, Flash something crazy like Slim or something, that might work... Possibly it could be a bootloader issue, did you ever get on the MK2? Maybe you got one of the female phones. Sammy made some by mistake. they can be real finicky every now and then, like they work just fine most of the time, but about once a month or so they just crap out. Could be that too.

No never got MK2... went straight to NB4
And I LIKE GE lol...
Well whatever happened it seems stable again now currently on stock NB4
Next thing to check is if the knox warranty flag is still tripped... Do you know how to do that ?

Yea your Knox flag is tripped alright, you have zero chance if ever getting back to 0x0.... Nobody knows how to do that brother.

Just put the phone in download mode. Power off then volume up, home and power. You'll see it when you get into download mode.

Philz's and TWRP both had small glitches on the GS4 4.2.2 Stock Rom.
I downloaded and installed the OUDHS-Recovery-jfltetmo-1.0.3.3.tar and have it all PERFECT now! You can search using exactly that filename and download it for your use. IT IS THE flashable Recovery Version.
I can, using Rom Manager, NAME THE BACKUP before booting into recovery, and it makes the backup just as I named it!
I can also recover using Rom Manager, and visually select what backup file I want to restore to, again, before booting into recovery!
CWM type backups take longer then TWRP backups to complete, but I have not had any instance that a backup I made couldn't be restored.
I did have that problem using "TWRP" and "On Line Backup". (No longer do I trust using those)

TRYING to go from Carbon to OptimusDE...help anyone?

Alright guys, getting a little frustrated here. I'm trying to go from Carbon to OptimusDE ZVC, When I flash OptimusDE, everything boots up fine but there isn't data to start with. I go into settings to update PRL and as soon as it starts to update, the phone reboots. Try to connect to WiFi, the phone reboots. Also, Exchange Services crash immediately after boot up.
What I've tried - Re-flashing, wiping caches and then also doing a factory reset, flashing ZVC radio.
Nothing seems to be getting this working. Anyone know what I need to do to get things working here? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Try flashing the new Stocktimus ROM and see if the same thing happens. If it does, you may just have to re-root.

I'm not sure how root would pertain to this issue. I'll give Stocktimus a try, but I tried engine's other stock ROM's a month or so back and had the exact same issue.

Weird. Did you try actually activating?

The phone is activated, but trying to run the activation in settings causes reboot. Receives phone calls no problem. Just downloaded Stocktimus O and same thing. No data, crash on PRL update or Profile update, crash on WiFi activation. I really don't understand what's going on...

Yeah I've not had that issue and I've flashed back and forth from stock based to aosp and vice versa. Might be your efs got screwed up. Try lgnpst or LG flash tool (I prefer the latter because it takes it to an 'out of the box' state, activation required ) and try activating again

That has happened to me before going from an AOSP rom to one of the available stock roms. Don't remember which one.
But I remember flashing the TWRP recovery. I was on Philz Touch Clockworkmod.
And then performed all the required wipes and reset then flashed Stockimus-D and viola, no FC's. no reboots. No more problems.
If problems persist used TeenyBins via LGNPST

A couple other things to try also:
Make sure you're wiping /system also.
Sometimes CM/AOSP Roms can mess up your SD. You may need to wipe it also. Just make sure you back it up first. That's happened to me a few times.

Lol, so funny story. I did LGNPST and got back to full stock. I had to use an oldddd ZVC .bin file, not a teenybin. Re-rooted, unlocked, put CWM 6.0.4.6 back on the phone and created a stock backup. I didn't mention before but I had long deleted my stock backups, so I didn't have a stock ROM on my phone at all to flash back to. Anyways, back on full stock, everything is working great, go into CWM, create a backup and flash Stocktimus O. It says it installed successfully, so I reboot...just the normal Sprint boot screen, everything is total stock. I'm wondering if perhaps, like a previous poster brought up, it's a CWM issue. I'll switch over to TWRP and give it a shot, report back later. I prefer CWM because I don't have any issues flashing AOSP ROM's whereas TWRP, on all versions I've tried, will fail with some ROM's while others work fine.

So LGNPST got everything working. But when you installed Stocktimus O you got stuck on the Sprint boot screen?
Did you give it about 4min to make sure it booted up?
It should work with both TWRP and CWM. I installed with both when I built them.
I know you've flashed before, but just in case, wipe /system, /data, /dalvic, and /cache.
If you don't want to do this next part, I'll see if it's something on my end:

It didn't get stuck, it just booted as though I hadn't flashed Stocktimus O even though it said it had successfully installed. Kinda weird...but it's definitely not on your end. I've done something, at some point, that has borked my ability to flash stock. I've thought about totally wiping SD....just LGNPST after that. I dunno.
TWRP didn't give me any different results. Same deal, just booted with the original Sprint screen, not your boot animation, nothing had changed...

It's gotta be on the SD. I don't know how, or where, no file explorer shows anything weird, but CM/AOSP ROM'S have got to be putting something on it for it not to flash. I've had issues more than once when I've had to wipe my SD to fix it.
We gotta got you going so you can get us some more Carbon, LS970 style.

I'm TRYING to build it right now. Getting some really unusual errors. The last time I got one of them, I just restarted the build and it finished fine. This time though I'm getting Java Runtime Environment crashes though and something else...not sure what's up with that. Keep chipping away at it though

I had the reboot issue when it connected to data too when flashing back and forth from cm/aosp ROMs to stock. What resolves the issue for me is to use TWRP and go to advanced wrote and wipe everything EXCEPT internal. I used to have that issue all the time when using cwm recovery but philz recovery also seems to be ok when flashing back and forth hope this helps!
