Panicing - need help please!!

I have just rooted my Google Nexus and it went very well. I have installed the phone encryption which also went well... I installed an application that I bought on Google Play called phone locator Pro and it crashed when i opened it, so i submitted a bug report and decided to reboot phone, when the phone boots back up and I unlock it with my pin the msg phonelocator has crashed appears and it takes presidence of the screen and I cant select the OK button to get rid of it - so I cant use my phone at all!
I cant even restore my backup because the phone cant read the virtual sd card in clockwork recovery because its encrypted! How can I get around this, Im freaking out and my heart is beating at 200 bpm!

yep, when I pull the battery the phone reboots and the same msg appears.

I think worst case that you might have to flash the phone again and you might lose your data. But with everything backed up to Gmail as far as contacts and things, you can recover. At least it isn't hard bricked.
I know that doesn't sound too reassuring but all is not lost! I would suggest when you get it back and running that you make sure everything works and do a reboot before encrypting it.

See if you can get into CWM from the toolbox.

I cant flash it though, because the phone is encrypted and in recovery it wont mount the volumes. I have a backup I can restore from if this worked for me....
Yup, I have the toolkit, used that to root my phone, but it will want to reboot the phone, I wonder if I can remove the APK somehow without being in recovery?

As one of the users pointed out, you have to reflash a custom rom again, you will obviously loose your contacts but it better than loosing your nexus.
1.get a custom rom, not stock because it will erase cwm.
2.transfer it to the SD card
3.boot into cwm using boot combination.
4. Wipe data/factory reset and cache.
5.choose *choose zip from SD card.*
6.reflash your rom then your gapps package if u have one.
If this doesn't help you will have to try fast boot method

Most likely fastboot is the right method for you, I can't explain much as I'm mainly a cwm user

I have http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1400775 on my phone, but when I try to select it in recovery it cant see the partition because its encrypted.

Use fastboot to flash stock google images.

How can I flash a custom ROM if I cant access my partitions in CWR!!
The phone has encryption...... It wont mount the partition where the ROM is and I cant do a factory reset because it fails when it tries to delete the data partition because its encrypted and the android secure partition.

Thanks, would this be the same as selection option 8 on the nexus toolkit?
"extract and flash google factory ROM?" or would this method you linked above allow me to do it without worrying about phone ecryption?

I have no idea as I have never used a toolkit.

Will this need to boot into fastboot, if it will it wont work, since the partition that the ROM is on wont be visible, this gets decrypted later into the boot of the phone.

Just hold down vol. Up and down and power at the same time.
Type fastboot devices into terminal on your computer and see if it shows.
The partition should be visible, just not the data on it.
And it should only be the data partition that is encrypted anyway.

I don't have one and anyway its not about money so enjoy your phone and remember that it is really hard to brick a nexus so don't give yourself a heart attack next time something happens, it can always be fixed.
Read about adb and fastboot, so valuable.

I did similar with my HTC Desire and learnt fast! Appreciate the advice too - I got the phone just yesterday
I am now just reapplying the custom ROM I use and NEVER using encryption again.

Recovery/Wiping questions

RIght now I am having a issue with wiping. I do a full wipe and then use a super wipe and I try to install a new rom and I get the screen after I boot up and the old boot animation comes up from the old rom it get the android is upgrading screen it finishes and i get to the home screen without signing into my google account and then my phone reboots after a while and it gets stuck at the main boot animation. I am able to get to the bootloader and recovery. I repeat doing a full factory reset and everything I just described happens again. I can't seem to get a full wipe to work properly. Anyone have any sort of idea what might be going on?

What happens if you completely re-flash the stock images and start over? That's always a good policy if you can't get a ROM to boot.

I haven't tried it. I don't know where I can get the stock images. Have any clue?

Also I can't get the phone to stay on long enough to mount my SD card. right now I am using Team Win Recovery Project I was able to flash a new recovery. It was on my sd card. I was using CWM.

1- you don't need super wipe, just wipe data /a cache

3- make sure the ROM you downloaded is for your device (maguro=gsm / toro=verizon)

Yeah, I've done all that. I've even tried to restore a backp and it stops at restoring data and it says error while restoring /data! I'm on clockworkmod now. It seems like I can't do a full wipe. no matter what I do.

[Q] Is there any way to completely erase everything from my phone?

I've searched both xda and Google and haven't been able to find anything.
Yesterday, I formatted everything possible via CWM6.0.2.3 (/storage, /data, etc.) and (of course) ended up having to reinstall the stock rom as I've effectively soft-bricked my phone.
After getting everything up and running again, I installed ROM Manager and it said that I still had TWRP still installed. What's more, the stock rom had the wallpaper and lock screen message I'd set up before formatting everything.
I later hooked my phone up to my pc and deleted everything from both internal storage and my sd card, though Windows showed that there was still some data left on the phone. I again did a fresh install of the stock rom and the previous background, message, and TWRP are still there.
I know I'm being a bit nitpicky, but where is this data hidden and how can I delete it?

You need to Odin a full wipe stock Rom that will format everything

Only select Auto-Reboot. There should be a one-click that will prevent disaster. It is right here. Be aware of the 16 vs 32 GB option.

I've tried having Auto-Reboot and F-Time Reset checked and I still have residual files.
After trying the one click method you linked, absolutely nothing changed except I was no longer rooted. Still had same apps, lock screen, wallpaper, etc.

And you've done a factory wipe? What apps are remaining? I guess I should get more specific.

Yes, I've done a factory wipe. All of my apps remain; I still have Chrome, ROM Manager, Nova Launcher, etc.
If I delete everything, everything goes to stock except behind the scene things like TWRP still being installed (according to ROM Manager).

I'm relatively certain I followed the directions properly, and it works as far as getting back to stock. Though in the video he mentions that data wouldn't be wiped and that's what I was aiming for: wiping absolutely everything so that the phone is as when I first got it. No custom recoveries, no saved lockscreen message, nothing.

You may have to manually delete them then.

U need to flash a full complete stock image from odin. Im willing to bet you have a return to stock thread in your development section. If your using a mobile app remember to check stickys as they dont show by default.

I've tried that (by hooking up my phone to my pc and deleting everything) :/ Just performed another factory data reset and Rom Manager still says I have CWM and TWRP already installed.

I've tried returning to stock, both with the Odin method and the flash-only method :\

I have a " RESET_LJ7.zip" that will delete everything including recovery and reset flash counter, but it's a huge file, I'm not home, and I haven't uploaded it anywhere. You can search for that zip file name because I can't remember where I originally found it, or I can upload it tonight for you, it's just a flashable zip

Where are custom recoveries stored? And is there some way for me to access it? I would think right clicking "Phone" from Explorer and hitting "Format" would delete everything, but apparently it doesn't.

No I'm not sure where the recovery is restored, I didn't make the zip I just have a copy of it because I needed it when I returned 2 phones to Sprint Like I said search that name for the zip, and if you still don't find it I'll upload it when home, that could be VERY late though

Oh and also, the files you delete while "formatting" the phone on the computer are only the extra app data (like back-ups and such) and other extra files. Things like recovery are in hidden system files that I believe can only be deleted through a specific clear (like system/data clear in TWRP) or by flashing a complete stock tar through Odin. Well you can also manually delete them but that takes a while.

I couldn't find the .zip via Google nor xda, but don't worry about it. My phone works perfectly fine and I can return to stock well enough. It just bothers me that there seems to be some secret folder/residual data that I can't seem to get rid of ><

I've already returned my phone to stock (several times) via the directions in the [HOW TO] Root, Unroot, Hotspot, Roms, Tips and more! 10/5/12 thread (I'm assuming both .tar would work the same way), but thank you.

That is correct, the recovery is stored on a separate partition from the OS, so you cant clear that just by formatting system and such. Its also best to simply replace it and not clear it, because if you clear it you are completely removing everything from the recovery partition and that may or may not cause issues
@OP, One way you can remove your custom recovery (and replace it with the stock recovery) is by flashing a full stock tar. In the general section there is a thread titled "MA6 OTA!!!", read through there because some people posted links to how to get the stock recovery back on without having to ODIN a full stock tar (they needed to flash the LJ7 to MA6 OTA through the stock recovery)

Ah, thank you so much. The main thing that was bugging me was that I couldn't seem to get rid of CWM and TWRP, but now I know they're hidden.
But I've flashed CWM, TWRP, then went back to CWM and whenever I open Recovery Setup in Rom Manager, it says that both CWM and TWRP are already installed, which is what's bugging me. Rom Manager works just fine and all, but I'm just really curious about why/how I can have two recoveries installed at the same time (I thought flashing one would delete the other).

This is why I hate the dependence that people have built on touch recoveries and recovery controlling apps. It makes people forget that the recovery works like a computer bios. It's not hidden. It's just on its own partition. When you fire it up, it's essentially booting a separate partition so that you can control everything on the main partition and nothing from your rom or kernel are in use at the time.

I flashed this JB 4.2.2 stock build [ROM] [OTA][GSM] Android 4.2.2 JDQ39: Rooted | Galaxy Nexus > XDA for my Galaxy Nexus
Now...
I can't disable Next-word suggestions in the Language & Input -> Google Keyboard Settings
Also, I noticed a few seconds of lag when pressing the power button to unlock the phone, when viewing recent apps (via the soft-key), and when opening the Camera too
Also, when I choose the "Recent Apps" soft key.. it's as the app that's currently being used is minimised and the homescreen is shown without any icons
The Build came with Busybox pre-installed and now its gone after a day of using my phone... I literally can't find it.
I searched in the play store "BusyBox" and the result is 3 different apps with the same name!
Any Advice?

go back to recovery, format/wipe /system partition, reflash rom.
For your reference, a good app to install bb is stephen (stericsson)'s busybox installer (play store link). Obviously, it needs root.

How do I get “root”?
If you are booted into a custom recovery (recoveries will be covered later), root is enabled by default. If you want root while booted into Android, you will need to place two files on your system partition: an “su” binary which grants root access, and a superuser app that manages that access. The two that are available are ChainsDD’s Superuser and Chainfire’s SuperSU. Usually these files are packaged up in a zip file that is flashable using a custom recovery, but they can be flashed manually using ADB. Both of these methods will be described below.

I guess I'll need to install Titanium Backup to backup my apps and settings, I'll have to search for an article for the best way to do it as well..

You can wipe the system partition in a custom recovery (dont know if you can with stock). And yes you could flash via ROM manager but I wouldnt recommend it. I am on XenonHD 11.1 and loving it. But roms are a personal choice so there is no 'best' ROM. Just try out.

The tutorial I followed didn't mention using the ROM manager, but I had not choice.. becuase whenever I went into fastboot mode manually, it got stuck on the screen displaying Google (I waited for minutes without any luck)
How would you recommend CyanogenMod 10.1.2 against the stock 4.2.2 which I have currently?

If you read it, you'll stop thinking you need to be doing anything at this point in FASTBOOT interface! Like mrgnex says, you need to be on a custom recovery to format /system. (Have you read the link yet? By now you should know that the /system partition and the /sdcard/ (aka userdata) are 2 different things!)

For your reference, you can't erase /system in stock recovery.

I'm still confused though.. "Fast boot" and "Recovery" are they the same thing?
I tried a "fix" mentioned by someone about using a live wallpaper such as "Water", I tried it and it's been 1/2 hour and it's really smooth compared to before...
Yes, I do have a custom recovery, actually I don't know why, but It seems I've got two according to ROM Manager.
It says I've got Clockwork Mod Recovery & TWRP.
I also tried going into recovery (Volume up + Down + Power) and it worked this time, when I select recovery, it goes into CWRM
I also did a bit of research about CyanogenMod 10.1.2 and from what I could gather it's liked by people a lot.
I'm guessing that definitely some time ahead it'll get all "laggy" again, Is there any reason according to you why I shouldn't install it compared to the stock 4.2.2 I have?

So to get things clear:
No fastboot and recovery arent the same thing.
Vol up+down+power brings you into fast boot and not recovery.
Apparently you dont have 2 custom recoverys since you booted into cwm.
Cm10 is great. But there are many great roms out there. You can start off with cm and then (if you please) look further.
I dont see any reason to not install cm10.1.2 since a whole team built and optimized it. So basically it is a better stock.
When you think your phone is slow you should look into the custom kernels. Thats a different story which I will not begin before you want to

I'll download CM10.1.2 tomorrow and will decide to install it once Stock JB 4.2.2 starts acting up again.
In the meantime I'll read on about kernels, please keep don't close this thread...yet.

I've decided that I will test out the Rom that I have currently (4.2.2) for a few weeks, and then flash CM.
I wanted to know one more thing, Is it bad to flash ROMs to your phone every now and then?
Because I've seen people flashing different ROMs on their phone, I don't wanna damage my phone as I want it to last as long as I can make it.
(by "Bad" I mean... does it reduce the phone's life or it's hardware's life span)

No it can't. I was a flashaholic (until I discovered XenonHD) and my phone didn't got worse. Only overclocking the CPU and gpu can affect the life of the CPU or gpu (or both XD). Just do a fresh install everytime and read the post of the ROM of your choice to see what to do to get it working optimally. If you have any problems just ask.

I'll flash CM in a week or two, as I'm on a tight schedule currently, and I also wanna note down the average battery time I get out of 4.2.2

So... since 4.3 is now out, I was thinking it'd be better for me to flash it other than anything else.
I'll most probably download the stock rom from:

So far I came across this thread having the steps to flash 4.3

With the stock package there is no need for a toolkit.

I apologize guys... I guess I wasn't thinking straight as its past midnight here...
So just to clarify stuff so that I don't end up doing something wrong:
-> Head into Recovery Mode (with usb debugging enabled... connect usb cable to phone and pc)
-> Wipe System
-> Wipe Cache
-> Install from SD card (select .zip file)
right?
Also, I performed a backup of the applications I have via Titanium Backup, They'll work on 4.3 when I restore them right? or do you recommend downloading them from the play store again?

the google stock package is NOT flashable in CWM/TWRP
if you follow the GOOGLE instructions it WILL wipe your device (remember that backup you made of everything?)
alternatively you can make sure and have adb/fastboot working on your computer properly, extract all the files out of the zip (including the tar.gz located inside), and in recovery, do a factory reset, then boot to fastboot, fastboot flash system and boot ....
as for Titanium Backup, there is a work around to get it working on 4.3, but root is lacking full power.

I took a backup of my apps using titanium backup, I installed it but can't use it, it says I need root (which I already had before).
I read online somewhere that I need to root again, but I don't wanna lose all my data/ apps I installed again...
Any ideas?

According to a friend's recommendation I used Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit to Root, and surprisingly didn't lose any of my data!

TWRP - Unable to mount storage (Moto Z Play on Nougat)

​I've been using the forums for a while but this is the first time I post on here, so I'm not so sure if I'm posting this in the right place. But I need any help I can get at this point.
​So a while ago I unlocked and rooted my Moto Z Play by flashing TWRP recovery with the fastboot ADB tools. Things were fine, but then I accidentally let the phone do an automatic OTA update. When the phone was going to boot, it went straight to TWRP recovery and after I input my unlock pattern, it gave me a couple lines of text. In these lines was a red line of text saying "Unable to mount storage" and then it would go to the recovery menu. It won't boot past the recovery anymore.
​I looked it up but I can't seem to find clear answers anywhere, as many that I have found have their storage indicating that they have "0mb" when they go to backup. I don't have that problem as all my storage is present and even MTP is enabled. Hopefully someone can help me out here anyway possible.

You can not install OTA updates on ROOTED phone with TWRP recovery.
For working OTA you must have stock recovery and NO ROOT.

This sounds a bit too hard for me. Usually it is sufficient to flash a firmware with a similar version like you currently have installed, omitting "erase userdata", meaning you do a dirty flash keeping the data.
Alternative, if you want to keep data but erase the phone installing a firmware, you may do backup in twrp and restore data after the phone runs. But keep in mind that a) there were some problems restoring Nandroid backups on Z Play and b) /data/media must be treated separately, which usually is the data you want to keep (mainly: photos and videos you made). You need to enter your phone pin to decrypt data to mount it, maybe that is the missing step.

If you cannot receive OTA updates on a phone with custom recovery, even after (say) restoring a full TWRP System Image backup. . . doesn't that imply, in practice, that you cannot ever return to a stock experience?
I have a stock Z Play with the latest 7.1.1 updates. If I decide to unlock and install LineageOS, there is no way to get back to stock? ever? I mean, I knew about the warranty, that safetynet won't pass, and that I can't re-lock the bootloader. I'm fine with all that. But I thought I could at least get back to the stock ROM, and continue to receive OTA updates. Instead, it sounds like running my backup would be hell: the phone would constantly nag me to install OTA updates, yet if I ever slipped up and said "yes" it would be bricked.
Is there no way to back up the original recovery partition too, so that you can make the OTA updater happy?

The are several easy possibilities.
You can get some firmware which you install using fastboot flash. You may decide to only flash stock recovery. For a successful update you need to have system, boot, recovery, logo, oem (from memory, hope I got this right) in exactly the same version.
You can use fastboot boot to start recovery. Then you should be able to restore your recovery backup.
My usual way: if you have stock, never install twrp. Always boot it when needed using fastboot boot. Then you don't need to care about recovery when updating.
If an update does not work, your always can decide to install a full stock ROM, if you omit the command "erase userdata", your data usually survives fine. No guarantee of course, always do a backup. Don't forget data/media where personal things are stored and never covered by Nandroid backup of twrp.

Aha---great suggestion, thanks! I would never have thought of that, even though I had to do it on another device once where the bootloader kept overwriting the recovery.

I was just reading up on how to wipe and install a full stock ROM (factory image). It seems reasonably straightforward, IF you can find the correct image. This worries me a little, because my device is RETUS and there aren't many of those images floating around. None on lolinet.com for example. Some people say to use a RETAIL image but does anyone actually understand how they are different, and what the repercussions might be?

You may have a look at firmware.center. They have a lot, but I'm not sure if all are working fine. You may need to do a backup and try. But you nowhere get the safety it's right, because Lenorola does not release signed versions (which would also allow relocking).
Note: For me all the firmwares from there worked by now.

Changing update channel is said to be possible, but I never tried it. If you really want it you may try searching a bit in xda forums of similar but older phones how experiences with this are.
