[Q] Change wimax settings for carrier other than Sprint? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Thinking about getting an EVO 4g and wondering if there are any roms, or other ways to get to the Wimax settings so I can change them from Sprint to a local company?
On another note I would be flashing this to work with PagePlus, but I think that is beside the point of my main question.

I'm 99% sure there is no wimax roaming, the radio in the evo is set to only receive sprint's signal.

You can change using ##data# if u have ur MSL, but then again u would only be able to change it if u have an account with Clear (or is it Clearwire?)

Same thing basically. And not like you could switch to roam on verizon, because they use LTE, different technology with frequencies.

Hey,
Just like Teh said,
The evo uses wimax to give us 4g, only the big name networks are getting 4g right now and even that is all going to be running off an lte network because it is going to be fast better range and more reliable, sprint even ditched wimax technology and if you dont have 4g coverage now most likely you will never get wimax coverage, sprint decided to go to the lte as well just for easy of use.
Now while this sucks for us evo users :/ it is good in the long run because since lte is a certain frequency and many cell companies are using it now it should mean for a stronger more reliable 4g network in due time! as long as sprint does things right that is!
I hope I helped if I did please hit the thanks button!

Guys please please read the entire post or atleast read it till you understand.
He wants to know if he can switch to a LOCAL Company. OTHER COMPANIES besides sprint and clear/clearwire offer WiMAX just using different settings to connect to their services.
He doesn't want to roam.
He wants to connect his phone probably using an account with the other company...

Exactly. Local company. I don't care about Sprint/Verizon/ATT 4G.

Sprint is adding LTE finally!

So basically there's no way to get the EVO on a wimax network other than Sprint's? Just to clarify...

Evo 4G wimax with local providor
hello
I'm interested into this subject too,
we have a local Wimax company here in Libya and I'd like to edit my Evo 4G's Wimax settings and insert the Local CO.'s data,
I rooted my Evo 4G (thanks to you XDA-Developers)
I could get into the wimax by ##3282# menu
the 3 main things that are needed to change from Sprint (I guess) are :
User name
Password
Wimax certificate
and I don't think that the Hardware's frequencies are editable (but I'm not quite sure)
anyway...the ##3282# menu didn't help and there's no way that I can put my local CO.'s certificate.
do you know what system files that contain the Wimax data and where to find them?
thanks

Clear & the EVO

With clearwire's recent release of the Android WiMAX Framework Ver 1.0, I was wondering if it was any way possible to add the ability for our phones to possibly connect with CLEAR directly instead of through sprint.
EDIT:AND IF IT IS POSSIBLE, START DEVELOPING HERE.
Here in phoenix, our entire area is pretty much covered by CLEAR but sprint hasn't officially released 4g here. It's kind of frustrating knowing the infrastructure is there but nothing hasn't happened yet.
oh yea, the link is here for the framework-http://64.13.72.12/tos/cm_api_terms.html?fileId=16&android_wimax_src.zip

just be patient...it is coming (easy for me to say since I have 4G )
I've started implementing Clear's framework on top of CM6. It looks quite possible to connect to any WiMax network. I've only ported Clear over, I still need to make it talk to the sequans sdio module the ECO uses.
Is it possible to connect to Clear 3g in any way currently?

Wow, your definitely making great progress! If the EVO can connect to pretty much any WiMax network including clear, I think it would really open up a lot of options for us and have waaay more coverage than before.
I don't know anything about the clear framework... I haven't ready anything about it. But are you expecting to be able to connect to their network for free?
I was under the impression that Clear and the Sprint Wimax network were the same exact thing. Didn't Sprint buy Clear for exactly that reason?
I have "unofficial" 4G in my area, and when I used that antenna tool to check position, I was looking for the Clear site thinking I was connecting to that...
Totally off? They're separate networks?

Nah...but that would definitely be a plus The real use I see for this is bringing 4g speeds to people that aren't under sprint's shotty 4g coverage. Like I said in the op, the WiMax framework with clear is fairly widespread (and already available where I'm at) but inaccessible to us. This would help alot of people in clear's market with the evo that sprint hasn't gotten around to releasing their 4g.
@sjwaste-Sprint owns a majority stake in clearwire; and usually where you have the clear network, there's sprint's wimax. But in certain markets i.e phoenix arizona, sprint hasn't gotten to setting up clear's towers or vice versa for use.
And it's not just clear's WiMax that could be used here. It was said it seems that any WiMax network might be accesible.
Since Sprint owns 51% of Clear, why wouldn't you be able to connect to it?

Ok, Clear's WiMax network is Sprint's 4G network they are one and the same, the 3G network that Clear has is Sprint's 3G network, I am a Clear authorized retailer employee, that is my source of knowledge. in short, when you use Sprint's 4G network, you are truly connecting to Clear, our mac addresses have been added into Clear's database, tat's how we get the connection, same thing with Clear and Sprint 3G just reverse.

Thanks for the insight! I read someplace on XDA, not sure where, that someone couldn't get onto some portion of Clears network with his EVO because of the frequency of the network whereas his Sprint/WiMax access point for his computer could. Any info about that? And to any Dev's out there, what are the chances that the EVO could access these other freq's? and if I am mistaken in what I post, I blame the other poster that I read this from (let me go search for that post now )

That's cool and all, but I still get no WiMax in phoenix, yet phoenix was one of the first cities to get clear! The thread isn't just about that though, because the evo's WiMax has been limited. As mikeallison stated before, the evo seems to have the ability to communicate with any wimax tower. While it might not be important now, as more companies get into wimax it could really make a difference to those who aren't in sprint's or clear's coverage.

Yes, that said, you may need different authentication to access them. So, you might not be able to just hop on.
Clear
Maybe I don't "do enough" but I don't see any major difference between the 3g and 4g except I can tether and still make calls w/out losing my internet connection... I can send data while on call, etc. But as far as speed...again, maybe I don't do enough to tell the difference.
As far as clear, I am a clear customer for phone service and their wireless on the go service and it SUCKs!!! I can never stay connected to the internet on the go as they claim and I've complained and complained....they lock you into contracts like the cell companies and it is an overall bust for me. Maybe they are developing as well and will improve. I don't ask for much, just to be able to use what I pay for...
Seeing as how they have horrible customer service will keep them in line with the culture of Sprint, so it makes since. I do, however, favor Sprint's plans over all other providers so for that I stay and my EVO rocks.

What other wimax networks are you expecting exactly? It's basically a dead protocol and I don't think anyone but Sprint/Clear plan to use it in the states. Everyone else is going with LTE.
Are you sure that Clear even has wimax in Phoenix? The reason I ask is that they do not currently show it on their coverage map. I have Clearwire internet at my house in Reno and when I asked about Sprint 4g they said they don't have it here, and don't know when they will. My understanding is that in the cities that Clear has the wimax equipment installed are the cities that have Sprint 4g. They told me the reason we do not have 4g here is that their current equipment here isn't capable of wimax.

Is it possible to modify evo's 4g to pick up clear's signal and use both?

Is there anyway to modify our wimax to receive both Sprint and clear's signal? It would help a lot of people out

I thought Sprint already uses Clear's signal? They are using Clear's network for it.
btw, the Evo's autocorrect fails to recognize the phone's name
Lolz just noticed the error in the title. As for the clear signal deal yes and no I have a clear tower no less than one mile from my house but I don't get wimax in my house hence it doesn't recognize clear's network so sprint uses there network but is on a different channel so Sprint has less area's with wimax.

doubt this is possible and btw clear uses sprint for 4g sprint owns a large if not all of clear that is how they have the 4g hotspot
Nope.
Clearwire and Sprint are 2 separates companies. Sprint DOES NOT own their own 4G network (well unless you count the 54% ownership). They sell Clear service like all other authorized resellers.
Also as another note. Clear is not on all Sprint towers. In fact most of thier site are separate for any Sprint asset.

This is correct. And if you've been following the news about these two companies, they are currently about as functional as a bad marriage that is simply staying together because neither currently has a better option.

that is why i was wondering if there was a way to tweek the wimax to pick up clear's signal it would make alot of people with out 4g on sprint happy i for one would be but so far this has become a debate on wether sprint runs on thier own towers or clear's. The questions still remains can it be done i would love a developers stand point on this

Sprint does not have any 4G towers. None. So no, there is no way to tweak your phone so that it can connect to both Sprint and Clear's 4G towers (again, because Sprint has none). All of the towers you are using for 4G belong to Clear and, I believe, you are not limited to a select number of theirs towers. Therefore, you are already picking up Clear's towers on their network. In fact, if you talk to Clearwire they will tell you that the Evo and Epic are actually Clear's phones that they are piloting on Sprint before rolling out their cell business. This is one of the reasons the relationship is so strained between the two companies right now. Sprint does not want to keep funding Clear because they are essentially funding a future rival - but it is hard not to because Clear needs money to keep extending 4G coverage.
Sorry for the long answer, but hope that makes sense. The answer to your question is....no

First time I've heard of this.
If its a new tower you may just need to wait for an update from sprint. Last time a bunch of people said they started getting 4g where they never did before. I wouldn't pay anything extra because you are already paying for it.

does anyone know by chance where to edit the realm on the epic?
there is no wimax menu using ##data#
or maybe this is just another fail of the dk28 early froyo release
edit: found the realm (hit view after ##data# (i kept pressing 'edit'))
nai isn't on the same menu for the epic however
still trying to figure that out - maybe NAP-ID?
NAP-ID is usually a non changing number like 2 or 4...but when wimax is connecting it shows the full realm
a bit confusing

[Q]Is that possible to get the WiMax working in Toronto, Canada?

[Q]Is that possible to get the WiMax working in Toronto, Canada?
since we all know that Bell/Rogers have tons of WiMax towers in Great Toronto Area...
so definitely there is service
wimax.bell.ca
however, wimax is not like wifi entering password or whatever...
so,is there any ways to get the wimax working in toronto, Canada?
can i just take the phone to Bell to ask them to activate it?
bump...
Hope somebody can help...
First try to see the WiMAX frequency, if its mobile (802.16e) or fixed (802.16-2005) or even the new path 802.16m....
After that let us know something...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
It's doubtful.
1. Do they use the same frequencies for WiMax that Sprint does?
2. Sprint uses RSA keys to authenticate when connecting to WiMax. Does Rogers/Bell? Even if they don't, would the Evo connect without the authentication on the other end?
3. Would Rogers/Bell even let you do this? If the situation were reversed, Sprint would not do it even if it were technically possible. It's just their policy.
called CSR and told no foreign wimax devices are allowed...
so no way to get it work,,,not going to bother it anymore
Feq is same as Sprint, authorized by MAC address
People who know about the radio should find a way to allow mac cloning... and then you can used the cloned RSA dump from another device onto your EVO, or vice versa.
I am sure it will happen.
Hey look XDA is the sbhacker

[Q] Epic4g to MetroPCS. Metro claims they dont have 3G???

I just went through all the necessary steps to get my shiny new Epic 4G to work on MetroPCS. I realize that LTE 4G wont work because of differing technologies but was willing to settle for 3G.
I got to the metro store to have them add my ESN to their database and they told me they do not have any 3G network whatsoever. Is this true? What is a good course of action here? seems like my only two options are get an LTE phone or try Boost Mobile instead.
My more important question is are these guys yanking my chain to avoid work or sell me something?
Thoughts?
3G is only in a few cities and when I say a few I do mean a few that can be counted on one hand I believe. Dallas and Miami I think were of the few that were supposed to recently have reactivated the 3g temporally to relieve some traffic in other areas.
Flash to boost or cricket I was Able to get my Epic on cricket with there 45 dollar plan with working 3g cane it to a lil under 50 a month with taxes
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
thanks guys, I'll look into what's available in my area!
Also are those Metro guys just lazy as hell or can they really not add an ESN to the Metro inventory without flashing it themselves? They claimed that their flashing program did the adding and they had no other way to do it. Sounds like a hard sell or a lazy excuse to me
I would lean more towards they are not as experienced in that area. I think any opportunity to provide a service for a customer within your ability that would lead to the customer returning to receive more services from your store should be an automatic move to make. No brainer. I'm sure if they knew other methods they would.
Well the manager was who I was talking to about it at the time. I figure if anyone in the store knows he would :\

Wimaxx user asking a lte? ????

Ok I have a couple of general questions that some may be able to chime in on....
1) with sprint changing up the game and switching over to 4gLTE instead of WIMAXX, are we as Evo wimax users ever going to be able to use LTE w/o upgrading our phone completely?
(I LIVE IN A WIMAXX STRICKEN AREA OF VA AND FEEL AS IF I GOT DUKED ON 2 4G PHONES)
2) Do you guys ever think there will be a rom that will help support Ltd for those of us stricken 4g users now. Or possibly an OTA that will pull us to the top with the rest of the pack of Ltd users?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I'm not exactly sure, but I think the 4G (WiMAX) radio in your phone is a physical thing so I don't think you will be able to use the LTE and an OTA or a rom would not change that. I did hear that Sprint will support WiMAX for a while, even if they do switch to LTE.

No, the Evo will NEVER work on LTE, as it doesn't have an LTE radio. It will continue to work on the wimax network for as long as sprint supports it (probably 2 years or so).

Again no. Flashing a rom isn't going to physically put an LTE radio chip in your phone.
Valid point didn't think about the wimax radio being a physical device...dumb ass me!!!..ha ha..thanks for the reply guys
