[Q] Epic4g to MetroPCS. Metro claims they dont have 3G??? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just went through all the necessary steps to get my shiny new Epic 4G to work on MetroPCS. I realize that LTE 4G wont work because of differing technologies but was willing to settle for 3G.
I got to the metro store to have them add my ESN to their database and they told me they do not have any 3G network whatsoever. Is this true? What is a good course of action here? seems like my only two options are get an LTE phone or try Boost Mobile instead.
My more important question is are these guys yanking my chain to avoid work or sell me something?
Thoughts?

3G is only in a few cities and when I say a few I do mean a few that can be counted on one hand I believe. Dallas and Miami I think were of the few that were supposed to recently have reactivated the 3g temporally to relieve some traffic in other areas.

Flash to boost or cricket I was Able to get my Epic on cricket with there 45 dollar plan with working 3g cane it to a lil under 50 a month with taxes
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App

thanks guys, I'll look into what's available in my area!
Also are those Metro guys just lazy as hell or can they really not add an ESN to the Metro inventory without flashing it themselves? They claimed that their flashing program did the adding and they had no other way to do it. Sounds like a hard sell or a lazy excuse to me

I would lean more towards they are not as experienced in that area. I think any opportunity to provide a service for a customer within your ability that would lead to the customer returning to receive more services from your store should be an automatic move to make. No brainer. I'm sure if they knew other methods they would.

Well the manager was who I was talking to about it at the time. I figure if anyone in the store knows he would :\

They do have 3g, I just manually updated my prl and its blazing fast. Not capped right now either. Although I havent left the house so not sure how the differnt towers are going to work. I just downloaded 2000kb in 2.83 secs, prl 3022 evdo rev a moto droid 1. Daytona

[Q] Evo to Metro PCS

I got an Evo for the intention of flashing it to boost mobile. Then I saw virgin mobile and decided i wanted to flash to them instead (same service half the price). I ended up going with metro pcs and I spent maybe 12 hours today working on this thing. I CANT FIND ONE TUTORIAL THAT WORKS! Also I'm now finding out that you cant use the evo with 3g in New York, apparently that's where I live hence a problem. Can someone point me to a good PRL, Tutorial on how to flash to metro, and a funny picture that can make me happy because I'm very angry.
can someone respond? i have a $500 touch screen desk ornament just hanging out...staring me down, mocking me
Dang 1:49 minutes, relax...
First off, you can't just flash your EVO to metro yourself. You need to go to a metro store and have them add the ESN to their database. This will active the phone and get it working for talk and text, just get the $40 plan!
To get MMS and web working follow bloody's info and flash his ROM to make life easy.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=795182
Now to make you mad, Metro does not have 3g, you will only get 2G. The good news is there are ways to potentially get Clearwire 4G working for either free or cheap.
Virgin Mobile won't active the EVO since Sprint owns them and they don't want people flocking to the cheap plans. If you find someone that will actually do this let me know I would be very interested!
My esn is already in their database and I had service until I flashed my prl and now I have no bars can someone post the sprint prl for new york and had was it clear wire for free

If you want Metro to work you need a metro PRL, search around it is easy to find, howard forums has a sticky, the PRL you need 02004
As for clear do read bloodykiller86 metrodroid ROM thread I posted info there on how to get clearwire to work.

Also, if you want to try a service with faster internet connection (4g), try Simple Mobile. $60 a month plans.

Epic Touch flashed to Boost Mobile with WORKING 4G/MMS/INTERNET and PRL 61007

I successfully flashed my Epic 4G Touch to Boost Mobile using the Incognito guide and was able to get my settings absolutely perfect, if not better than if it was with Sprint.. My download speeds are averaging 1mb/sec, MMS works flawlessly, and for the first time ever I was able to download something using 4G, and 4G service has not been released in my city, there is just a small stretch of road that picks up 4G signal briefly. I live 54 miles North of San Francisco so i guess it came from there? Anyway, I would be glad to help anyone trying to set up there phone on boost but I make no promises as too the success rate. I updated my PRL through settings, update, and I am on 61007 now. This PRL is ten times better and stronger than any other I have tried, and could be the reason why 4G works. I dont know.
I included screen shots to show the 4G Active on my Epic Touch, and a picture showing the speeds im getting on 3G. Yesterday I could not download any faster than 15kb/s on my OG Epic running Boost and now im averaging 1mb/s!
Congrats I'm sure a few others will find this useful also.

Question: How did you do 4g without a valid subbed 4g mac id?
Or did you use a donor 4g mac address?
Thanks in advance
a guide would be great. i am considering boost mobile.
I'm working on a guide, however it's going to be difficult considering all the tweaking of settings I went through. I think the best thing is for me to share my QPST and other configuration settings

Mine too... I've tried speeds in Pittsburgh DC and Vegas this week... all really slow!
Why would you guys be expecting better service or speeds? Boost is owned by sprint (last time I checked) and uses their equipment.

You are correct sir..lol, I am also looking into boost since their plans are cheaper then Sprints and goes lower per every 6 month of on time payments. I really don't need 4g and have only used it maybe a hand full of times since the days of the epic.
Boost is pretty much Sprints little bro...just that Sprint gets the better phones and Boost gets the hand me downs in a way.

Yea i know where you are come from same towers, I am really considering of switching to Boost after 13 yrs of Sprint to save some $$$$ now that we can flash the EpicTouch. I will still be getting pretty much everything just like my 450 Sprint plan the only thing different is that I just will not have 4g service yet will be paying less for my service.
im not expecting better speeds. I left sprint for boost and my 3g speeds on my evo were much better. I was hoping for the same speeds on boost. It sounds like its a sprint 3g problem lately and will hopefully get better(for boost users as Well)
i would like to know how to do this....
the OP has shown screenshots connecting to 4G.. but never a screenshot of active data moving. Id be willing to bet the browser redirects him to the 4G signup page.
I was with sprint for 15 years before i switch to Boost. Most phone i bought without contract feeling that they offer better customer support when not under a contract but at the end was paying to much paying $125 on a unlimited plan. My time to overpay is over. lol
Ive owned the Evo 4g and the Evo 3d on Boost and speeds are way better on those devices than on the Epic Touch 4G. Hoping for a updated soon
The op left us hanging with the 4g info..
I know there is a way but it requires a clone of a valid 4g subbed account.
If anyone can outline this please post
Did anyone get OTA (over the air) programing to work?
I would really love to know if anyone can get that working

Sprint working on spreading 4G network?

I know that when I purchased the Evo I was kind of upset that I didn't have 4G because of my area. Now i'm onto the ET4G and still no 4g =/. What's my solution? Move to the city to get 4G? Curious I suppose and its a shame to have a 4g capable phone and not get 4g network.
Trust me I was with ATT and didn't get 4g either and not even 3G because a lot of there network isn't even 3G build yet. And they are way more expensive. Though now I at least have 3g with Sprint.

i hate to be the one to break the news to you bro. all the WiMax 4g towers that are currently installed and operational right now are all the 4g WiMax towers there ever will be. Sprint canned it since it was on a not power/non building penetrating frequency of like 2.6 ghz or something. verizon i beleive uses like 700mhz or something close to that which allows the single to penetrate buildings deeper and travel farther. Sprint just anounced its "Sprint Visions" plan i beleive its called. What it entails apon aproval from the FCC i beleive since its 20 or 40 mhz away from the GPS frequency. they are moving to LTE towers like Verizon. what does this mean for your WiMax handset? it will never see the light of day with 4g. it will not work on LTE as the 4g chip does not work on those frequncys. in early 2012 sprint will start to release new handsets with the new radio chip in them. i beleive they said it should all be deployed within 3 years? also that are moving to Rev B 3g so its faster. also will be able to use the internet and phone voice calls at the same time. they use all the push to talk nextel for the new 3g or something like that. idk, people if you know whats the plan better than i please feel free to correct me. but thats just the general idea of whats happening
You summed it up pretty well. WiMax won't be expanded, but it will continue to be supported for a few years. Sprint actually basically has 3 types of connections. EVDO, Nextel's PTT, and WiMax. They'll be able to put a multi-band antenna up at all the disparate sites, providing some awesome coverage! Of course this is still a ways away.
4g
Sprint hasn't canned 4g in my state they just put up two more towers one in my town and one about 6 miles outside the north side indy which will make a total of 4 towers in indy and that doesn't include the iu and iupui campuses. And they are putting up more so i don't know where you got your info that sprint canned 4g but they aren't now we are hosting the super bowl and that could be why They are putting up towers left and right in my city.
Sprint hasn't canned 4g, but is changing over to lte next year. All of this information came from the investment talk they gave I believe at the start of October. Sprint covered how this would work and that work on the towers was starting in order to move to the new 4g. Wimax will still run side by side with lte for a few years.

[Q] Thinking about switching carriers (T-Mobile to Sprint)

Alright. So I've searched the forum with no luck, so I'm asking (if I've missed something, please point me to the right thread and quickly close this one).
I currently have the Galaxy S 4G (t-mobile) and am having second thoughts about my carrier. I found out that I had a discount with Verizon through my job, but even still the plans are ridiculously priced (in a bad way). Since I was exploring an alternative I figured I would check out Sprint. Not only was I impressed by the plan prices, I was very impressed by the Epic 4G Touch (and the Nexus S 4g also). This has me thinking about switching to Sprint.
Now, I live in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. My biggest concern is that I may lose a tremendous amount in coverage and quality of signal. Has anyone here switched from t-mobile to Sprint? And if so, how was your experience? (All of you please chime in, but especially if you live in Norf Cack).
I live in Virginia and I frequently travel to Atlanta and New Orleans. Sprint is ok, but I want to switch to a GSM carrier. My main issue with Sprint is the already installed 3G network. It's the worst of all of the 3G networks and they claim to improve the network in the near future(network.sprint.com). I have been waiting since the EVO for an improvement and everything is the same. The best Sprint phone radio wise is the Photon. The E4GT and the Nexus S 4G has bad radios and I have tested all three. I currently own the E4GT and it's the best looking phone by far, but I recommend sticking with Tmo or jumping to big blue and getting a phone from Craigslist if you want a new one.

One thing everyone must keep in mind is Sprint-Verizon and Att-Tmobile have roaming agreements with each others; if you have a Sprint phone make sure you place it on Automatic and update the PRL, this will resolve your issue, if you can get excellent Verizon signal, your Sprint phone will work; this is something each carrier do not promote to us.
Most carriers (except for verizon) have slow data (Sprint) or spotty coverage (AT&T/T-Mobile). Sprints phones are great if youre in a WiFi area you can make calls and get internet with good speeds.
I recently switch from T-Mobile to Sprint. I used to have the Samsung Vibrant and own the Epic 4G Touch now. So as a previous T-mobile customer and current Sprint customer, I will give you my .02 cents.
I've had Sprint for about a week now, and to be honest, I love it. I wasn't too sure about making the switch, mainly because my friends had sprint phones and my T-mobile Vibrant on 3g averaged around 3mbps download speeds while my friends Epic 4G averages 1.5mbps download speeds on 4G. So thats twice the speed on T-Mobiles 3G, but after playing the the Epic 4G touch, you really can't tell much of a difference. 3G, even though slow than t-mo's 3G, seemed to load up just as quickly, and 4G, even though slow too, actually seemed to load up pages faster. Even when streaming music on Google Music, the 4G connection on my Epic 4G touch loaded up the music faster. Another thing I enjoy about Sprint is that they don't throttle your speed. Last month I went over 5GB on data on T-Mobile and got throttled. First time ever i got throttled. You read about it all the time, but actually experiencing it is a different story. It sucked. One thing i did notice, 4G for Sprint is spotty. I do get it in my house and at my job, but while driving around I seem to lose connection randomly. Another thing is you can't talk and use data at the same time, but I don't really do that.
Another major influence on my switching to Sprint, is T-mobiles murky future. The At&t acquisition wasn't my favorite thing to happen, but it doesn't seem like it'll go through. DT didn't really have a plan B for T-Mobile USA, in fact they aren't really interested in a US market anymore. One possibility for T-mobile was partnering up with cable companies but Verizon's deal with comcast, time warner and brighthouse basically blocked T-mobile from going that route, so T-mobile will probably not have much of a future left in the states.
Like you I was also looking to switch to Verizon, but as you said, prices are ridiculous. It would've been fine for me for one line, but I have a family plan and that just adds up more costs.
So far i'm happy with Sprint. Plus they have 4G LTE planned for the future, so might as well lock yourself in on their unlimited plan before they start follow Verizon and At&t and tier their data.

I have the roaming setting on automatic and I have talked to Sprint about updating the PRL, but i don't have call issues like I have data issues. I don't talk on the phone that much, but I can make calls. The data is what I was referring too, which happens to be subpar.
I also switched to Sprint from T-Mobile. I'm in southern Texas (Corpus Christi) and I've had zero problems with Sprint. My loaner Evo 4G was great, good 4G coverage around here although the Evo's battery couldn't really handle that; my minimal contact with customer service has been mostly positive. There's nothing fantastic about it (except my amazing phone), but I can't think of any real negatives so far, either. I'm about three or four months in.
I also switched from T-MO to Sprint. I'm in Nashville, Tn. Got the Epic Touch 4G. No complaints so far. Speeds seem pretty decent. My bill is even cheaper with 2 phones than it was on T-Mo.... So far, everything has been flawless.
I just went over 5Gb for the first time. Received the message earlier today. Speed dropped from 7Mb to 56kb.
So I'm looking to switch to sprint too now. Are they still offering any incentives?
very tempted to make switch as well, using a nexus s on a local carrier only paying $56 month to month. Nice thing & bad thing is I can switch phones at anytime. Unlimited data/texting only $14.99, speeds vary anywhere from 1.2mbps to 6 or so. Becoming tired of switching phones every other month, really havent found something that I like.
Sprint receive a discount of 25%, leaning towards the iphone 4s. Android and rooting is just getting old to me. Sprint bill comes out to roughly $62 plus tax. Sprint in the area is pretty solid as well, but there 3g speeds could be a deal breaker.

E4GT'n & lovin' it
I've been with T-Mobile, at&t, and now I'm with Sprint. I didn't have a data plan on T-Mobile so I won't compare that to Sprints. As far as phone signals and dropped calls I say they're pretty much the same depending on where you live. I just happen to live in a city that's good with T-Mobile and Sprint so I've never had a drop call yet. I get more lost of signal on my Epic 4G Touch (Sprint) but I know that's a popular bug with the Epic Touch so I can't really say how much of the LOS is the fault of Sprints network.
If you want unlimited data go to Sprint. That's true unlimited. No slowing down after 2GB like T-Mobile. But take into consideration you may not get 4G Wi-Max where you live or work. I'm lucky to happen to get it at home and my job.
The only thing I like about T-Mobile over other carriers is they have month to month option. On a major carrier I think that's big. I have no interest going to a carrier made for month to month like boost mobile or virgin mobile. Why? I don't know how good the networks will be. How signal will be. How fast or slow their data speeds are. And they don't have any phones I like.

I hear all the time that people have issues with Sprints 3G data speed being super duper slow. The 3G is pretty good on my Epic 4G Touch. It's not slow by any means at all. But 4G & Wi-Fi definitely blows 3G out the water.
It definitely depends where you live. I started with Sprint about 15 months ago on launch day of OG Epic. I had 4g since day 1. I have never had a dropped call and I have full bar service with 8-13Mbps download speeds

What phone do you have right now?
I've used them all and I say sprint... But I'm a cheap date...
I had sprint for a few years in college and never had an issue, I'll probably test out my friends iphone 4s to see how it is with sprint. The extra $10 a month for an iphone maybe worth it to me. Although I've been android for the last 3 years, will wait a few months (hopefully) to see what sprints rolls out with the LTE phones, and how the ICS shapes up on nexus s.
I live in LA before coming to sprint I was on tmobile 3g was always fast on my Nexus One every where I was i never worry about coverage. I decided switch carriers for numbers of reasons 1 being that At&t might buy them another was didn't like being throttled after 2gb. sprints plans look better in my opinion but after getting the nexus s 4g wow there is no comparison whatsoever with the epic touch. on the nexus s 4g reception was so bad even wifi wouldn't connect even while standing in front of my router. now when I switched to the Epic touch 4g wifi was good even at the lowest connection 3g is like dial up in my house and 4g is non existing but everywhere else 4g is good 8-13mbps at home is not a bigger deal for me since I have broadband anyway I'm sticking with sprint hoping LTE upgrade is better than wimax.

Leaving sprint, want to keep my E4GT, what are my options?

Sprint has sent me a termination letter for excessive roaming and cutting me off July 3. This is probably for the best because my new job has 0 sprint coverage (deep inside a building) and i've been roaming on verizon for the last 2 months while at work. Anyway, I do love my epic 4g touch and while there are other phones that are now "superior" I'd prefer to keep it if possible.
So my quesiton is:
What other providers can I use with an E4GT, and how much work does it take to switch? (Flashing, odin, etc). And also, what would I lose in terms of 4g/3g/MMS, etc I'd prefer prepaid services like boost or cricket but of course, I don't know if they have coverage where I work but having all options on the table would be helpful!
Thanks in advance XDA!
I think it can be flashed to metro pcs, boost mobile, and virgin mobile. There's a couple threads around here giving you exact instructions in how to do so so check those out. I believe you'll lose 4g except with metro and everyhing else should be good.

Virgin Mobile is launching their 4G WiMax service at the end of the month. Something to look into.
Page Plus (VZW) is really your only option as the rest of the MVNO's listed here are Sprint. So same/no service.
Best off selling it and getting a new phone honestly.

You can flash it to anything cdma. You would need a donor phone though. you would most likely only lose wimax.

Ok time to give it to you raw..... (No Homo!) This is what you need to do my friend, go to google type in prepaid services and your zip code. See what pops up for your area then make some phone calls to them and ask them about their service in your area. Secondly you can then go to all of their respective sites and check out the deals. You may find like mentioned that selling the phone and purchasing lets say a T-mobile branded Galaxy 2 and using Simple Mobile may work better for you.
I understand trying to ask your fellow members but honestly what we are going to tell you I am sure you already know. Lastly, check with others in your area and see if one of the other big 3 work extremely well in your area that you desire the coverage and then check out their prepaid services
T-Mobile - Simple
AT&T - H2O
Verizon - Page Plus
Sell your phone for $250 purchase another Galaxy 2 for around $300 or work a trade out with someone.... Time to do some homework my friend... Get close with Google...
Happy searching!
if u get good boostmobile covarage in ur area then flash it to boostmobile
So it seems the only cdma carriers that use/resell verizon are pageplus and of course, verizion. Can an epic 4g touch be flashed to either of those?
I currently have my epic 4g touch flashed to straight talk 45 unlimited on Verizon coverage way better than sprint faster data far as 3g goes around 1.5mb a sec and signal is awesome

Awesome! How hard was it to flash it to straight talk? Any links would be helpful! I've never done a flash to another carrier so i'm not sure how hard it is exactly. So so far to get verizon coverage I can use:
Verizon resellers that work on an epic 4g touch (flashed):
Page Plus
Verizon Prepaid
Straight Talk
Sprint resellers
Boost Mobile
Cricket
US cellular?
MetroPCS
Virgin Mobile
If any of that is wrong let me know.
I flashed mine to Page Plus. Followed this guide, talk text and data work, but I am still working on removing the hidden Sprint APN settings to get MMS working.
It might seem a little intimidating, but it was pretty easy.

If you dont have a donor phone thats ok, but dont expect to get full 3G speeds without it. If you use the vzw password, you get 1x data. At least I am not getting raped on the monthly fee, so I can save up for the S3 and will probably move to straight talk.

question is, if he had to roam at work because Sprint obviously did not have tower close enough, then wouldn't Boost be a waste of time because you can't roam with boost, or virgin mobile for that matter, meaning he would just not have service where he works.

Thanks for that link, its awesome. I will likely go the page plus route though after googling the new phones im on the fence now, lol. The Galaxy note may be coming to t-mo as is the SIII. I don't want to spend $700 on a new phone, but if I can get $275 for my E4GT i'd be willing to pay maybe $500 and just eat the difference. I have until about June 20 to make my decision. At this point it'll either be new phone or page plus / straight talk flashed E4GT. I am pretty sure sprint doesn't set my ESN to bad on my epic just because they are booting me. If they do I'll be pretty irate.
if 4g is available in your area you can purchase a modem for it (clear wire, time Warner, net zero, etc) and use its MAC addy on your et4g as to still have 4g, I'll edit my post when I'm on my laptop to link to the thread with instructions to do that....

Letter of death workaround...
Have the same issue, you may want to try and port to Google Voice, terminate your Sprint account this will automatically happen once a port takes hold of the account number. Let the account terminate; start a new line of service from one of the big three or back to yellow shortly after. If you love the E4GT, go back to yellow the next cycle with a new bis/indiv. account and port your number back. Not happy or locked into the contract just prl flash back to the reason you most likely got terminated and then go over to big red when the SIII is released. Done and done... you'll keep the same phone if on yellow with little loss, and no ETF...
Can you explain what you are saying more for me? im getting kicked off due to a roaming issue on the 18th (tomorrow) and this is my business number so i need to keep it, however the 2nd line is fine on yellow which doesnt make any sence since its a business share plan so they told me that i can keep the 2nd line but will need to go to another carrier with the primary, dont care for limits on data so verizon seems like my only option but are you saying to take the number back to yellow after switching to another? cause they told me i could try after the new carriers 2 year contract but cant gaurentee ,,,but i thinkk that might have been a wink wink in the conversation from the yellow lady. i wouldnt mind switching to ver. prepay with my E4gt just to keep things smooth for now so if anything can you point me to a thread to do this (preferably wo a donor but i do have an old verizon prepay, its the one that flips both regular and landscape style, so would this one work as a donor, it has been activated before tho....thanks
