Wimaxx user asking a lte? ???? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok I have a couple of general questions that some may be able to chime in on....
1) with sprint changing up the game and switching over to 4gLTE instead of WIMAXX, are we as Evo wimax users ever going to be able to use LTE w/o upgrading our phone completely?
(I LIVE IN A WIMAXX STRICKEN AREA OF VA AND FEEL AS IF I GOT DUKED ON 2 4G PHONES)
2) Do you guys ever think there will be a rom that will help support Ltd for those of us stricken 4g users now. Or possibly an OTA that will pull us to the top with the rest of the pack of Ltd users?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

I'm not exactly sure, but I think the 4G (WiMAX) radio in your phone is a physical thing so I don't think you will be able to use the LTE and an OTA or a rom would not change that. I did hear that Sprint will support WiMAX for a while, even if they do switch to LTE.

are we as Evo wimax users ever going to be able to use LTE w/o upgrading our phone completely?

No, the Evo will NEVER work on LTE, as it doesn't have an LTE radio. It will continue to work on the wimax network for as long as sprint supports it (probably 2 years or so).

Again no. Flashing a rom isn't going to physically put an LTE radio chip in your phone.

Valid point didn't think about the wimax radio being a physical device...dumb ass me!!!..ha ha..thanks for the reply guys

[Q] Sprint's upgrade to LTE

So would Sprint's upgrade to LTE render Epic 4G touch useless for 4G?
Yes... But that point is so far in the future, you'll have a newer phone by then....

Nope, it doesn't.
Sprint has a deal and contract to have WiMAX (which is the 4G flavor the Epic Touch is running), till sometime in 2015 I believe.
I believe WiMax will be alive for at least a couple of years because full roll out of LTE is going to take time. Someone can correct me if I am wrong here but I think WiMax will certainly be here for the 2 years if you bought the phone on contract

Phew I was like now i'm like
It renders 4G for me useless for the most part. As I live in a city with no WiMax And the odds of ever getting it are about zero now. Oh well... I just hope we get some LTE love before the next great thing is out. But I'm sure I'll be loving my E4GT for least a year or 2 still.

Hence, so far in the future that the LTE network is fully rolled out and the Wimax network shut off which will be more than likely, quite past 2015, yes, at that point, the epic 4G touch will be USELESS on the Wimax network. It can't be upgraded to LTE and at that point, it'll be well past it's useful life as a "high end device" anyway, so, won't matter much.
To the OP, by the time you need to worry, you won't have this phone anyway.

Does anyone know why Sprint went with Wimax to begin with? Was it so they could get it up faster and claim to be the first 4g carrier? Or was it sort of like when HD DVD and Blurays came out... weren't sure which was going to be better?

Yes, they wanted to be the first 4G network and Wimax was the easiest to deploy quickly.

When sprint chose wimax it was definitely the front runner. It had pretty good financial backing from Google and intel. The problem is that it was never designed to be a mobile technology, it was merely adapted for that purpose. There was a revision (802.16m) that would have given it some legs to compete with lte from a power consumption and mobility standpoint but because Sprint is the only carrier that picked it up, all of the hardware makers stopped investing in mobile aspects of the technology. Effectively that makes it impossible to continue, without the radios being refined wimax would continue to be at a disadvantage to lte in the phone arena.

Sprint also needed to start doing something with its 2.5 GHz spectrum. Those licenses had coverage conditions that the FCC could invoke to take the spectrum from Sprint to sell or give to another entity that would use it. At the time, LTE was not a ready for commercial deployment, but WiMax was.

4g=LTE???

So by far best phone on sprint is the et4g. Seeing sprint is turning to lte will the et4g be compatible to lte?

Nope, the Epic Touch won't support LTE. It only supports WiMAX.

No, and Sprint's turning off WiMax (what the E4GT, Evo, Evo 3D, Photon, and all Sprint 4G phones) use around 2015. I hate thinking about it but by then we'll be on to the SGS5.
E4GT LTE Rumor
I was just at a CORPORATE Sprint store getting my poor OG Epic repaired. While I was waiting, I asked about the Galaxy Nexus. I was told that the EPIC 4G TOUCH needed a firmware update, and it could then be used on the new LTE network by a Sprint salesperson in the store. Sounds official to me!!

I have asked a few of the sales reps and customer service people about this. They say that it is not going to be able to use the LTE service, and that it would need new hardware. And if I'm not mistaken, The wimax service that we currently use is from another company that sprint is with. So i'm not real sure how this will play out, but it is definitely not going to be able to use the LTE service.

A) The Droid Charge doesn't have an Exynos processor in it like the Galaxy S II
B) The Exynos does NOT do LTE, which is why the Skyrocket and AT&T Galaxy Note have Snapdragon S3s in them, not Exynos.
C) He's right. You're not going to magically get LTE with a WiMax radio or even the built in CDMA radio. It doesn't matter if LTE is going to be transmitted on that frequency; the phone's modem won't understand what LTE is.
D) The Xoom actually had it's original radio REPLACED by Motorola, in addition to a software update. You had to send your Xoom to Motorola for them to physically open it up and add/replace the LTE radio.
E) It requires a SIM card, which the E4GT doesn't have a slot for.
Done.
IRead and understand that 800 mhz radio is cdma like the evo 3d for voice and 3g that is it ...when they decommission the iden frequencies they may put voice on the frequencies but there its no chance of lte on this phone .....none .... go read the other 4 threads already about this ....
And i will not lump all sprint employees in the same boat but 95 % of sprint employees are legally brain dead..... Just a joke ... The Photon has an LTE modem installed, it will be able to work on the lte setup. You lose, research before you speak.
Guys, ALL 4g devices will work just not on 4g LTE network. They just don't download at LTE speeds. You gotta remember that LTE is still a 4g based network. So, we are talking about downloading at 5mb/s or 10mb/s. At those speeds, it really doesn't matter unless you are trying to stream 5 porns in high quality at once lol. Same thing as 1x/2g still working but 3g is preferred.

The Photon most definitely does NOT have an LTE modem installed. I don't know where you think you got your info. It has the bece3502 chipset which is WiMax ONLY. On top of that, if you read the FCC filings it has only passed for use with WiMax, not LTE. So YOU lose, and you are the one who should research before you speak. ROFL

[Sprint] LTE and Root?

Okay so I know most people right now don't have Sprint LTE but I have a few questions before I start flashing ROMs. First one is LTE built in to ROMs such as AOKP and CM or do we just have to go without it once we root? Second is there a way to lose LTE keys/radios/whatever like there was on WIMAX? The phone I had before this was an OG Evo and I know that if you weren't careful you could lose the wimax keys and never be able to get on wimax again.
Thanks

I've never heard of anyone losing dmu keys on LTE devices, but it may be possible. Mind you I am on Verizon that has removable sims. You could lose your LTE radio, yes, if you flash the radios in the wrong order. Only during a flash though.
As for roms, most if not all should support LTE. Root isn't relevant to LTE in any form.
Sprint has a embedded sim..the only way besides flashing radio wrong would be your sim go bad.....ie hardware failure

I think that's pretty ridiculous how the sim is embedded. I mean if it goes bad you have to get a another phone? At least Verizon isn't doing that crap.

The 4G network that sprint currently has coverage for is WiMax Our phone does not have a WiMax antenna. So were stuck waiting for LTE 4G to come to our area.
If I helped you click the Thanx button
Yes, was wondering what the catch was! But one more question, what does an antenna have to make a difference in getting wimax vs lte?
Isnt what residual in the board tell it either to receive of send certain waves, etc etc. Is the antenna kryptonite vs coal in wimax phones? Love to Know and Learn, if you catch my drift....so dont take hatefully. Dont know the answer to the question unless the questions have all been answered
Is there a video and explanation of what is in a siii sprint video somewhere?

If you used WiMAX 4G non-LTE and do NOT have LTE available in your area...

I upgraded from the ET4G which has WiMax 4g. There is a 4g tower literally 1/4 mile down my street and i was getting an average of 8-10Mb/sec download speed under Wimax.
I ASSUMED... (thats where i went wrong) I purchased the Note 2, and thought there was the 3g, 4g WiMAX, and 4g LTE modes/antennas. Nope. So now that I have the Note 2 without LTE in my area, I'm stuck with HORRIBLE 3g (CDMA) speeds. No more HD Netflix or even a reliable connection to Pandora (high quality).
I live in South Bay Silicon valley area in California. Now I have to WAIT until LTE rolls out before I can use a data connection speed over 100k/sec. I cant believe they made this phone without the ability to connect to WiMAX 4g. I suppose WiMAX 4g will trashed once LTE rolls out and that would be a waste of hardware in the phone but there was no warning in the tech specs or Sprint reps.
Just warning to all out there wanting to upgrade the the Galaxy Note 2 where LTE is not available but have WiMAX speeds. The phone will NOT pick up WiMAX 4G. I would have waited to upgrade. =(

Very true, I was just hoping to sell it for $200 and make some money back off the the beastly Note 2 price (on contract when purchased). Its so sad, I'm so used to looking at the 720p screen, it makes the E4GT look so much like a girly phone. =) I read some articles on how fast the 4g LTE should be coming out with wider coverage, I guess LTE is supposed to cover just about everywhere that has 3G coverage. Just a matter of time.Since the Optimus G and the Note 2 are being released, they are pushing LTE as "quick as they can" supposedly.

I checked as best I could. I went into the phones hidden menu using the MSL code and checked the settings. There is no mode for 4G and 4G LTE separately. Sprint tech support also confirmed this (which I don't believe the crap they say). I gave them a hard time because I had a very hard time believing that that phone would not pickup standard 4G.
The app called 'PHONE INFO' on the market show you all your options for radio settings also.
A simple, quick google search would have confirmed that this phone does not have a WiMAX antenna... Samsung tried the best they could to standardize the hardware - not only across carriers but globally as well.

Even though I was basically without 4G since the inception, I am glad that they didnt include a WiMax radio on this phone. It is a battery leach (so it was always turned off) and I would not want to change the battery life of this phone ever. I am right now on 1 day 5 hours with about 15% left on this battery charge.

Yes, WiMAX was a leach! At least the specs for battery life are close to 3g battery life. Something i can look forward to.
Not claiming the validity of the thread but I only have one problem which is the OP calling WiMax a standard 4G. So far only LTE Advanced (not a regular LTE) is capable of such standard.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the sprint s3 the same way? Lte only, no wimax?
I'm sorry about this, but honestly this was a no Brainer. Once sprint signed on with lte, wimax was done. To expect them to put a battery draining radio they had no intention of continuing with (known for a very long time) would be unrealistic.
