Clear & the EVO

With clearwire's recent release of the Android WiMAX Framework Ver 1.0, I was wondering if it was any way possible to add the ability for our phones to possibly connect with CLEAR directly instead of through sprint.
EDIT:AND IF IT IS POSSIBLE, START DEVELOPING HERE.
Here in phoenix, our entire area is pretty much covered by CLEAR but sprint hasn't officially released 4g here. It's kind of frustrating knowing the infrastructure is there but nothing hasn't happened yet.

just be patient...it is coming (easy for me to say since I have 4G )

I've started implementing Clear's framework on top of CM6. It looks quite possible to connect to any WiMax network. I've only ported Clear over, I still need to make it talk to the sequans sdio module the ECO uses.

Is it possible to connect to Clear 3g in any way currently?

Wow, your definitely making great progress! If the EVO can connect to pretty much any WiMax network including clear, I think it would really open up a lot of options for us and have waaay more coverage than before.

I don't know anything about the clear framework... I haven't ready anything about it. But are you expecting to be able to connect to their network for free?

I was under the impression that Clear and the Sprint Wimax network were the same exact thing. Didn't Sprint buy Clear for exactly that reason?
I have "unofficial" 4G in my area, and when I used that antenna tool to check position, I was looking for the Clear site thinking I was connecting to that...
Totally off? They're separate networks?

Nah...but that would definitely be a plus The real use I see for this is bringing 4g speeds to people that aren't under sprint's shotty 4g coverage. Like I said in the op, the WiMax framework with clear is fairly widespread (and already available where I'm at) but inaccessible to us. This would help alot of people in clear's market with the evo that sprint hasn't gotten around to releasing their 4g.
@sjwaste-Sprint owns a majority stake in clearwire; and usually where you have the clear network, there's sprint's wimax. But in certain markets i.e phoenix arizona, sprint hasn't gotten to setting up clear's towers or vice versa for use.
And it's not just clear's WiMax that could be used here. It was said it seems that any WiMax network might be accesible.

Since Sprint owns 51% of Clear, why wouldn't you be able to connect to it?

I have clear in my home and Clear and the 4G are the same tower.

Ok, Clear's WiMax network is Sprint's 4G network they are one and the same, the 3G network that Clear has is Sprint's 3G network, I am a Clear authorized retailer employee, that is my source of knowledge. in short, when you use Sprint's 4G network, you are truly connecting to Clear, our mac addresses have been added into Clear's database, tat's how we get the connection, same thing with Clear and Sprint 3G just reverse.

Thanks for the insight! I read someplace on XDA, not sure where, that someone couldn't get onto some portion of Clears network with his EVO because of the frequency of the network whereas his Sprint/WiMax access point for his computer could. Any info about that? And to any Dev's out there, what are the chances that the EVO could access these other freq's? and if I am mistaken in what I post, I blame the other poster that I read this from (let me go search for that post now )

That's cool and all, but I still get no WiMax in phoenix, yet phoenix was one of the first cities to get clear! The thread isn't just about that though, because the evo's WiMax has been limited. As mikeallison stated before, the evo seems to have the ability to communicate with any wimax tower. While it might not be important now, as more companies get into wimax it could really make a difference to those who aren't in sprint's or clear's coverage.

Yes, that said, you may need different authentication to access them. So, you might not be able to just hop on.

Clear
Maybe I don't "do enough" but I don't see any major difference between the 3g and 4g except I can tether and still make calls w/out losing my internet connection... I can send data while on call, etc. But as far as speed...again, maybe I don't do enough to tell the difference.
As far as clear, I am a clear customer for phone service and their wireless on the go service and it SUCKs!!! I can never stay connected to the internet on the go as they claim and I've complained and complained....they lock you into contracts like the cell companies and it is an overall bust for me. Maybe they are developing as well and will improve. I don't ask for much, just to be able to use what I pay for...
Seeing as how they have horrible customer service will keep them in line with the culture of Sprint, so it makes since. I do, however, favor Sprint's plans over all other providers so for that I stay and my EVO rocks.

What other wimax networks are you expecting exactly? It's basically a dead protocol and I don't think anyone but Sprint/Clear plan to use it in the states. Everyone else is going with LTE.

Are you sure that Clear even has wimax in Phoenix? The reason I ask is that they do not currently show it on their coverage map. I have Clearwire internet at my house in Reno and when I asked about Sprint 4g they said they don't have it here, and don't know when they will. My understanding is that in the cities that Clear has the wimax equipment installed are the cities that have Sprint 4g. They told me the reason we do not have 4g here is that their current equipment here isn't capable of wimax.

Future WiMax coverage?

This is likely a dumb question, buts its worth a shot, do any of you Sprint insiders have any info on some future WiMax cities? I have used 4G going through Nashville and Atlanta, but I would really love it have it here in Louisville.
Its just frustrating that a city with a metro population of 1.4 Million doesn't have 4G, yet smaller towns like Lansing, MI and Wichita Falls, TX do.

It has to do with the way Clear does business. They will go into small cities because there is less competition. Grand Rapids, Mi, for example, gave Clear tax incentives to build their network there. They are in a lot of larger and mid-sized cities, but they are going to go where there is less competition, or some other type of incentive to go there. Sprint is going to have a good amount of say in where Clear builds out since they own a majority of Clear, but Clear still needs to be profitable (which they are not), or at least try.

Excellent question. Would give you thanks but apparently I'm limited to 5 a day.

I work at a Sprint service & got to listen in on a conference call with the sprint engineers. I shouldn't have said near future cause ETA is 2012 for it.

Sooo...if sprint did decide to switch to LTE...would that make us obsolete? I'm assuming I wouldn't get "4g" since my phone is wimax right? If that's the case, there would be some serious hell to pay since 4g and sprints pricing is the only reason I got rid of my 4 year old xv6800 and switched from verizon.

My best guess would be that the current 4G hardware would be fine. Clear is where Sprint gets their WiMax and Clear has a lot of customers using WiMax for home internet with a lot of equipment and I don't see it being cost effective to try and get everyone on LTE at the same time. Sprint and Clear would probably shift everyone over to LTE at some point, but that would be years down the road after LTE comes out. Kind of like the way the cell providers handled the switch from analog to digital. Just a guess, but when LTE comes out, there will be overlap while they sell out of their WiMax equipment as cheaper phones and sell new LTE equipment as their premium phones and they will support WiMax for 3-5 years longer. This is all conjecture, but I think this is the way it will happen.

Yeah, and lets be honest with ourselves too...by the time this would actually happen across their entire current 3G spectrum, most people would already be on new phones by then anyway, regardless of how happy or not they are on their current one anyway.

I call BS.
While Sprint can/will be able to flick a switch and enable LTE, there is no good reason to do it unless they want to BYOD Verizon phones. Which might be a reason to do it.
WiMAX has done better than LTE across the board. WiMAX comes from an IT background, with it's endless dev cycle and fierce price competition. LTE comes from a telco background, with it's bloat and ponderous plodding.
This means LTE deployments are very slow but work well. WiMax customers are going to suffer through bugs but they will be patched and reved through quickly.
Sprint has never has GSM phones, tho they are more common. Why Sprint would give up there mufti year head start to switch tech is beyond me.

Not to knock anything you're saying but in my opinion, Wi-max isn't really good.
Sure, it has great range. Building penetration however, sucks. 2.5 ghz spectrum is not good IMO. Right now Verizon is testing VOLTE, voWIMAX on phones will be awful. It works well on Clear because most people put their modems in one spot and that's it. For phones, it would call for frequent disconnects.
I love Sprint, but after the froyo debacle, and me playing around with LTE 4G.
I believe LTE is the way to go

WiMAX is an open spec and does not have a frequency requirement. LTE is worse at building penetration then WiMAX, but that is not important. It is about frequency.
Sprint could run WiMax over 800 MHZ just fine. Poof no more reason for LTE.
But penetration, I understand, is not going to be a problem when we get around to 802.16m.
LTE is a closed, expensive, protocol. It is not network centric, it's Telco centric.

How about this, Sebring, a city about 60 miles west of me has 4G via Clear. It is only Sebring, not bleed over from a neighboring city or anything like that.
Their population is around 10,000.
Suck on that for a while.

+1 I met a guy that works for ERICSSON which that company maintains Sprint towers here in Austin Texas.
He told me that LTE is more reliable/cheaper than clear-wire 4g. And not to expect anything till 2013/2014.
And he also told me that clear-wire 4g is not making profit.
If this is true ..I really don't know

I just moved back to Gainesville and to my surprise I now have 4G coverage where I live... Amazing!
And it's super fast... Compared to 3G at least. I also want to note that I now have full service everywhere. I think Network Vision has been started here!

where exactly in gainesville because i live in gainesville also and have several sprint 4g devices and have never gotten a signal not to mention if you check the coverage maps nothing even close to gainesville has it closest place is jacksonville by what the map shows

Network Vision sounds interesting, I just googled it for the first time. Any idea if LTE is a part of that plan?

It's a major part of the plan. By the end of 2013 the goal is for all Sprint towers to have LTE.

Previously there was 2 towers I knew about in Gainesville that had WiMax turned on for preliminary testing. One of these is near Shands.
Don't be fooled by the Sprint coverage maps, they don't include anything unofficial. If you want to see Sprint's 4G coverage go here: http://www.clear.com/coverage
You'll see where the towers are in Gainesville, but that coverage map is very unrealistic, but it's true. You'll get 4G somewhere in that area, but not that large of a coverage area.

you are actually really lucky i just recently talked to a person on tech support for clear and only way to use their 4g is to have one of their modems so you lucked out and someone near your home has one set up look below for my very quick convo with the tech specialist

It is expanding, or at least has been ever so slightly...
I've noticed it in Phoenix... we aren't an official wimax coverage area, but there are spots around the metro valley where you can get 4G now that you couldn't before, and Clearwire has been updating their maps to reflect the added coverage over the past few months.
Who knows how long it will go on though...?

This is incorrect; If you are getting a signal, your devices should be able to connect. It's more likely you just aren't getting a good signal where you are located.

Clearwire is sprints only 4G network. Sprint does not maintain its 4G network. It is 100% Clearwire.

I agree, sprint is not expanding wimax, but Clearwater is. They still have the home Internet marketing. Wimax is still faster than dsl and cheaper than cable.

Wimax is still expanding, but only with minor additions at Clearwire's convenience and to maintain spectrum licenses with the FCC. Its main priority to stay cash-positive and built an LTE network to supplement Sprint. Hopefully, Clearwire can find some big investors/partners to help with funding/buildout.

Yes, in order to stay an official nationwide carrier Clearwire has to cover a certain amount of people. Every year it increases. By 2013 every nationwide carrier must have a nationwide 4G network that covers a minimum amount of people

Also, yesterday Sprint announced they plan on opting out of their deal with LightSquared, so that is going to cripple the Network Vision plan.

It isn't going to cripple their NV plan at all. They are building out their LTE network SEPARATE of Clear or Lightsquared. The Lightsquared deal was going to give Lightsquared towers to bounce off of. Why do you think Lightsquared was going to end up paying Sprint and not the other way around?

I was more referring to the fiscal side of things. I don't think Sprint is going to be able to keep the portion of the deal they believe they are going to. Not talking about build out.

Where I live, the only Wimax is within 3 blocks of an official Sprint store. Imagine that. The rest of the area is covered by regular 3G with full bars but unfortunately at 1X speeds. Some days I would get better performance by turning off 3G, I never thought that was possible.
I'm currently enjoying Verizon's fine 3G with hopes that Sprint's first threatening letter will arrive soon. The local towers are do for an upgrade within 6 months, I wonder if better bandwidth or my termination notice will arrive first.

Most Sprint stores have signal boosting antennas so that there is good service as you are demoing devices. That accounts for that small radius.

What area of bradenton I'm about 20 miles east of 75 on sr 64 e we just got a major 3g overhaul on my tower as part of the network vision deal but no wimax yet

They told me that even though they use the same towers and same technology, and that they built Sprint's 4G network for them, they are not the same signal. They told me CLEAR operates their service on a slightly different frequency and they don't share that network or bandwidth with Sprint 4G customers so I wouldn't be sharing the network with Sprint.

i wouldn't trust a Clear rep with 2 cents, having dealt with them as a reseller for several years before dropping them for BS practices and dishonesty, and dealing with Other resellers lies.

Good to know. I'm not completely uninformed. I know that Clear operates on more frequencies than just the ones our phones are able to pick up on but from that to saying they don't share bandwidth or network at all with Sprint 4G customers is a bit of a stretch for me. I'm not so sure that's true...

I'm pretty sure there was a thread here on XDA that showed you how to change your WiMax MAC address so if you weren't on Sprint, you could use the MAC of your CLEAR modem in order to get 4G on your phone... So I'd think that the frequency is the same.

One thing has very little to do with the other actually, because the same is true of Comcast 4G WiMax modems that use CLEAR's network. Changing the MAC address is simply a way of getting the network to recognize your device as active but it has nothing to do with frequencies. I've heard CLEAR operates anywhere between 2.3 - 2.7 GHz while our phones' center frequencies put us between 2.5 and 2.6.
There has been lots of talk here on XDA about changing center frequencies (especially on the EVO) to take advantage of a bigger range of frequencies, which leads me to believe these other frequencies are indeed in use. I don't know if anyone's been able to do it, though. But even if they are in use, I'm just not sure how true their claim is that those frequencies provide better signal, are faster, and don't share bandwidth with Sprint 4G. That last claim seems a little out there for me.

You're good. I had a neighbor with clear that I used to leech of of and even with no sprint four g. In my place either from sprint, I was wifi at high speeds

I've even had a few people with boost epics that got clear Wimax on their phones instead poof sprint but that's a tutorial that breaks warrantee

Thank you! That was my worry, that if I didn't have Sprint 4G indoors, I wouldn't get CLEAR 4G either. You just helped. I'll give them a try and hope for the best. Worst case scenario, I'll return the equipment before the first 15 days are up.

You'll be lucky if they let you return the equipment within that window. One of my idiot roommates in college signed us up for their shady ass service in our apartment... We got one "bar" and 56k speeds. They would not let us cancel (even within the window) because we technically "had service". It took months to get that straightened out without having to pay cancellation fees... I can't remember how many conversations we had or how many techs they sent out... But hey, maybe they are different now? This was over four years ago... We ended up with Comcast.

Thanks for the heads up. They assured me since there is no contract, I could cancel at any time within that window and get all my money back but I've made my decision and I am not going to get service with the. I gave their "Acceptable Use" policy a read and it sounds like a lot of double talk. "Unlimited but only under our terms and if we think you are using too much data we will throttle you without warning and we won't tell you what we deem is 'too much data'... blah blah blah."
I bet they copied-and-pasted that stuff from AT&T's stance on their customers who were grandfathered in with their unlimited plans.

Haha, CLEAR. What a joke of a company. Stay far away from their lies and shady practices.
I tried out CLEAR ~1.5 years ago, and they assured me I'd get good data speeds, but I would get even better speeds in about 1-2 months as they were going to build a tower even closer to where I live (the rep even gave me the cross streets).
Well, I got crap data speeds, and returned it within 2 weeks. And to this day, their data map still shows no new towers where I live.

Clear is terrible. Customer right now and I signed a contract. Can't wait to get out of it

You guys don't know anything about Clear !!! If you want optimized download speeds, all you need it to rotate your modem ... problem solved... at least that's what they're saying here, and I can't stop laughing ...

STAY AWAY FROM CLEAR !!!
Their lowest plan is $35/month for 1.5 Mbits/sec ... Even if this service would be $15/month, I would still have a hard time justifying the amount of money for the service. 3G runs at this speed (for me at home, not everywhere else) and it comes part of the service without additional cost, so why spend the money in the first place ???

What happens to WiMax phones now there's LTE?

I was wondering since LTE is rolling out (at least here in Dallas it is), what happens to ppl with WiMax phones? I'm sure we'll still be able to use it, but shouldn't we be able to enjoy the network also? I'm not saying give everybody free phones, but at least make it possible for everybody to get a LTE phone, especially those who have suffered thru these horrible "4G" years. We spend our money on "Data plans" every month, but who actually enjoys their coverage? I know its alot of ppl who agree with me cause i see it all the time in these forums. Anybody have an idea as to whats up with this?

You're fortunate you actually have 4g... I've been paying for 4g for 3 years, and the closes tower to me is 90 miles away. I have yet to hop on 4g on my epic 4G Touch.
I do agree with you, though.... They should give some sort of upgrade option.

I was told at the sprint store Wimax will be used for the pre paid services like boost mobile so they too can jump on the 4g band wagon. While the rest of us like yourself who have been waiting for a larger 4g coverage are now forced into a different 4g network. Although LTE is much better by far.

To sum this all up for you as a Sprint Representative that I am.....
-LTE is another ADD-ON of 4G that Sprint is rolling out with called "Network Vision". The addon/change is expected to be completely completed by the END of 2013. All future smartphones will only be LTE compatible. All CURRENT smartphone with WiMax will not be compatible on LTE 4G networks. Along with this, there is to be increased 3G as well (call quality and data speeds and fewer dropped calls and increased coverage overall).
-When 4G first came out there was a $10 charge (before most carriers even had limited data packages) now that other carriers have Limited packages the $10 premium is only required for SMARTPHONES ONLY. Whether or not you have "4G" or not for your Sprint smartphone. You can even have a "non-smartphone" on a data plan and NOT pay the $10 premium as it applys to ONLY smartphones.
-WiMax WILL continue to be with sprint ONLY at this current time. There is NO talk of Boost, Virgin Mobile, etc "other carriers" signing with "Clear-Wire" (WiMax) for their network. They will remain on Sprint's 3G network.
Hope that clears the air about some pondering questions.. Anything else just let me know..

Lately wimax is the only reason I have not hurled bricks through the windows of my local Sprint stores. Thankfully I get a good 4g signal at home and work because 3g has been unusable more often than not the last 6 months. Also in Sept I'm moving to a city (of over a million ppl) that is not on the first or 2nd round of LTE rollout so a phone with LTE would be worthless to me. I will probably be rocking my E4GT for the full duration of my contract.

I understand that.. I currently have the Epic 4G Touch. Cause to me having like an EVO 4G LTE or the Galaxy SIII is pointless if I cant use 4G yet sense I'm not in an LTE area yet and the recently released smartphones and future smartphones dont have WiMax capabilities..
Along with that by the time I get LTE there'll be better newer phones..
