I have a DHD running 2.3.5 sense 3.0 and there are data that need to access in the phone's memory, therefore I thought I'd give rooting my phone a try. I have been looking around and found that I can root using the Ace hacking kit, but it would require me to downgrade the phone which would wipe the data on my phone, which defeats the purpose for me to root my phone. I am wondering if there is a way to gain access to the phone's memory without wiping its data?

AAHK is the best method to root ur device and ur phone need downgrade because right now the only way to root 2.3.5 is to downgrade. you shuld backup ur data and try to root ur device or you can wait till there is exploit available to root 2.3.5
Thanks for the reply, so is there an app that allows me to back up the phone data before I root the device? (I am trying to access some messages that is stored in the phone memory (that app saves the messages in the phone memory only))

Hi everyone,
I've spent the last 6 hours or so with reading about all kinds of stuff, involving rooting your device, installing recovery images, installing custom ROMs (OS), etc., including how to backup your phone with Nandroid (or even easier, using the Rom Manager from the market).
I have a HTC Desire with Android 2.1-update1 (I am glad that I didn't update yet, as now I still have the old 0.80 bootloader). I'd like to try out different other Android versions (unlockr lists so many, they all look interesting). However, before, I'd like to backup my phone, that is, my Android 2.1 including the app and Android settings.
As it appears, I need to have "root" access. But why? From my understanding, everything I should need is a modified recovery image that has nandroid backup integrated. Please correct me if I am wrong, but if I use unrevoked3, won't that tool do exactly that for me, without having me to wipe my phone? I haven't used unrevoked3 yet, and unfortunately it doesn't tell you what this tool exactly does, e.g. it doesn't tell you whether it wipes your phone, and it also doesn't tell you how it is able to give you root access ... which I'm curious about, because downloading it does not involve downloading a update.zip with > 100 MB of size.
Aside from that, why do "root your phone" solutions always force me to wipe my phone? Isn't it possible to just "update" my phone OS from Desire's Android 2.1 to Desire's hacked 2.1 with root access??

Never mind. It's actually quite easy.
Just go to the Desire-root guide on rootmydroid co uk.
Just follow step 1. You get to back up your device without having to root it.
Will only work if the Desire is not updated to Android 2.2 (OTA update) yet.
If i Root my phone will i lose all my install apps and their settings?
No, attaining root will not do that.
What about downgrading from 1.72 ?

Once you have root you can use Titanium Backup to backup apps & their settings, then restore these later. Titanium backup needs root.
To return to a HTC Virgin state, stock & unrooted, your best bet is to use an official HTC RUU (ROM Update Utility). Just ensure you use the correct one.

The only problem is i've got to downgrade before i get root.
So there's no way i can back everything up without root?
There may be ways and apps that can do this, I just don't know.
If you search the market with the term "backup" you may find apps that do not require root.
Seems like your stuck in a catch 22.
I did the downgrade method, and used mybackup for backup. It restored all of my contact informasion and almost all of my programs. Remember that android market will download all of your programs after a reinstall. If you use a htc sync account, you will get your wlan passwords too.
I have read up several ways about how doing this and each way seems to lead me back to losing something
i don't like the idea of gingerbreak formatting my SD card or others reverting me to start from scratch in terms of downloading and installing all my apps again...

Not without losing apps.Sorry,there is a way to root 2.3.3 easily,but that requires an unlocked bootloader,and unlocked bootloader wipes everything on your phone except SDcard,so pull off the APps that are on SD.

I have read many topics, guides and post about rooting but more i read more confused i get, so i write here in order to get some assist from fellow desire Z owners.
Situation looks like this:
I have Desire Z with Android 2.3.3 and what i read till now, to root this OS the only possibility is to downgrade it in first place, but the downgrade will wipe out current data (or perhaps i'm wrong here?), which i want to avoid.
Then again i want to root my phone to use some app that requires it, and uninstall some unnecessary components, i'm not interested in flashing custom roms right now, so perhaps there is some way to grant such privileges via temp root without downgrading?
Any assistance will be appreciated.

The downgrade guide does have a (very) temporary root, which will allow you to backup your apps and data. It would also allow whatever app you need to run, but not for very long, the system becomes unstable if you leave it exploited.

Ok, understand so follow-up questions:
1. let's say i will do anything till temp-root then do what i want, and then is there a way to close exploit?
2. Or if i will go on, do the full rom backup for example using titanium backup and then restore it after downgrade would it bring back my Andro to 2.3.3 or stay at Froyo?

ad 1. When having temp root you are limited with the things you can do and sometimes the phone does not behave as expected. Temp root does not mean S-OFF, so system partition might not be writeable.
You close the exploit be doing a full reboot of the phone.
ad 2. After downgrade and gaining S-OFF you can install every ROM that is available for your phone. There is a lot of Android 2.3.3 ROMs out there.
VirtuousRom provides some nice Sense ROMS.
The best known "Sense-less" ROM is CyanogenMod 7.1 / 7.2. CyanogenMod 9 is still tested and should soon be available.

Thank you guys for the answers, i did some reading about rooting, adb tutorials, even went through first part of downgrade to get temp-root but at this point i have other questions:
1. I tried to use Titanium Backup to backup my apps, but it don't see them, i searched for solution and it seems that it want's me to update SuperUser.apk but after i do TB dosen't see root anymore, and SuperUser tells that busybox version is wrong, is there any solution to fix it?
2. Is there a reverse guide for unroot and S-ON? i found some using RAGE but i don't know if it would work if i use guide for root?
3. Hboot, is this recommended as i read that this part is where is highest risk of brick?
4. Just for to satisify my curiousity, what will happen if after downgrade i would install OTA Update?

I know this question had probably already asked, but I currently not found an answer in my case.
I've a Samsung Gallaxy Nexus with the JOP40D.I9250XWMA2 build (Android 4.2.1).
This is the OTA ROM and my phone is locked.
I search an issue to root my phone without unlocking the bootloader because I need
to backup the SMS database and contact database.
Root access seems to be required to access to /data/data/ with all databases,
but I didn't find an issue to root my phone without unlocking the bootloader.
This is a problem because if I want to unlock, my phone will be wiped and
I will loose all my datas !
I tried to install "Bootunlocker" application, an application to unlock Gallaxy Nexus
without wipe, but this application need a rooted phone, so I cannot use it.
- I also tried framaroot, but without success on my phone.
- I also tried towelroot, but my phone is not supported.
It seem a lot of vulnerabilities used to have root access cannot be exploited on
my phone.
Is somebody have a good issue to root a Gallaxy Nexus without wipe datas and loose
all datas ?
