I've spent the last 6 hours or so with reading about all kinds of stuff, involving rooting your device, installing recovery images, installing custom ROMs (OS), etc., including how to backup your phone with Nandroid (or even easier, using the Rom Manager from the market).
I have a HTC Desire with Android 2.1-update1 (I am glad that I didn't update yet, as now I still have the old 0.80 bootloader). I'd like to try out different other Android versions (unlockr lists so many, they all look interesting). However, before, I'd like to backup my phone, that is, my Android 2.1 including the app and Android settings.
As it appears, I need to have "root" access. But why? From my understanding, everything I should need is a modified recovery image that has nandroid backup integrated. Please correct me if I am wrong, but if I use unrevoked3, won't that tool do exactly that for me, without having me to wipe my phone? I haven't used unrevoked3 yet, and unfortunately it doesn't tell you what this tool exactly does, e.g. it doesn't tell you whether it wipes your phone, and it also doesn't tell you how it is able to give you root access ... which I'm curious about, because downloading it does not involve downloading a update.zip with > 100 MB of size.
Aside from that, why do "root your phone" solutions always force me to wipe my phone? Isn't it possible to just "update" my phone OS from Desire's Android 2.1 to Desire's hacked 2.1 with root access??

Never mind. It's actually quite easy.
Just go to the Desire-root guide on rootmydroid co uk.
Just follow step 1. You get to back up your device without having to root it.
Will only work if the Desire is not updated to Android 2.2 (OTA update) yet.

Ok, so I really like my HTC Evo, but I want to expand a little outside the box. I used to load custom ROMs on my PPC6700 and that was very straightforward and easy. It seems like this whole Android Rooting thing is not quite so.
What I want to do is load a stock ROM with everything working, but the option to remove some of the Bloatware from Sprint. My biggest problem right now is that I don't know how to backup all my current apps without having root access. In order to get root access, from what I understand, I have to completely erase my phone. Kind of a viscous cycle. Can anyone help me out with this?
Also, should I do the full root (including NAND) or just the base root? Finally, do I have to do the radio update after rooting, or do I not have to worry about it since I already did the first OTA?
Here is the info I have gathered so far:
Root Part 1 (Toastcfh)
Root Part 2 (Toastcfh)
Install New ROM (SuperSonic Version or other??)
Radio Update (Toastcfh - Optional??)

You could use unrevoked to root which doesnt wipe your phone and then you would be able to run titanium backup to back your apps then do full root which will wipe your phone install the ROM and radio you want then use titanium backup to restore your apps.
Will I still have to update the radio since I already installed the OTA update? I guess I am confused on the radio thing, is it a driver update or a firmware update?
I beleive once you root using toasts method which uses the PC35IMG.zip file that it downgrades the radio to prior the OTA update. Installing the radio is easy though. Once rooted just install your ROM following the creators directions then flash the radio using the current radio zip and it flashes just like a ROM just has to reboot a couple times. Just what ever you do DO NOT pull the battery during a radio update even if its taking awhile let it finish or you can brick your phone. I used the radio zip found in Flipz ROM post.

Hi,
Im totally new to phone flashing, rooting etc. Please answer few of my questions before I make something bad to my beloved Desire
I have Wavesecure installed. However it has a limitation based on Android ROM - application cannot start GPS by itself. Seems to be secure-issued thing. I do not want to discuss it - just found out that if I will root my Desire then Wavesecure is able to start GPS tracking based on my SMS.
This is very important for me as I find this feature "a must" if phone is stolen.
I do not want to change anything in my ROM, do not want to flash new roms - just need root for Wavesecure.
And here is my major question - if done with some of tutorials:
- will I be able to run smooth still my old HTC rom without any problems, data loss etc? So will it just have root feature and nothing changed?
- if HTC releases new firmware update - can I install it from HTC or I will have to skip?
- if I install HTC release - will I have to root again?
1) rooting with the Stock image is fine, and you will be able to create backups of your phone in the future (which is always helpful)
2) Yes you can install them but you loose your rootedness and as such use of wavesecure
3) as above and yes, but you dont have to stick with the HTC ROM's, the cooked ROMs on here are way more fun

Is there any good guide for rooting only with 0.8 bootloader? All I found is rooting+flashing and I would like to avoid flash.
Wants only to add root feature, do not change ROM and last but not least - do not loose any settings/data...
sorry but in order to root your phone you have to flash a new rom
you are currently using a htc official unrooted rom
you need to install a htc rooted rom (this is just the htc official rom (yours) with root features)
this will clear the data off your phone, however if you have enabled the default backup feature of the phone most of this will be backed up and restored, you can even download 3rd party software such as titanium backup and mybackup pro from the market

So I think I will wait for official 2.2 ROM and then I'll flash. Should be in few days/weeks now as already got 2.1-update1 installed via HTC.
Indeed, i was running that 2 days ago and 2.2 will eventually drop, just give it a week or so after and the Cooked ROMS should be up to scratch

Are you rooted? If so, just use ROM Manager (which uses either ClockworkMod or Amon RA depending on which you choose) to do ROM backups. Same to restore.
Restoring to factory settings is a bit more complicated, but there are tons of threads about it here. Just search and read. You're looking for the stock RUU. Or you can flash the new 2.2 stock OTA from Sprint and it will update you and make it all stock. But you won't be able to root it.
Oh, by the way, if you're NOT rooted and you have the 2.2 update, you can't root it yet, as far as anybody here knows, so you can't do any of this.
Go into Recovery Mode, scroll down to Backup/Restore & choose to perform a nandroid backup.

Yes my phone is rooted and I need to know how can I get old rom like android 2.1 the reason for this is I did rooted but there is issue with android market which some software does not have in there like alingplayer so I was wondering if something is wrong.
Btw if I use simplyroot it has 2 steps which 1. Root, 2. Flash it. Now do I need to flash it or just root it should be fine, could this cause the market not showing all software like slingplayer

No I don't 2.2 ota update. Currently showing 2.1 but rooted I know because I can do Internet wifi tether but it seems some application missing from droid marketntherefore I need to try restore to original rom or older so I can see if the software I look for is in the droid market or not

I'd just let your other thread run until you get your answers there, then. Don't run so many parallel threads, you'll get confused. If you want your market fixed, that's something you can do with existing threads and info. If you want to flash a new ROM just to get your market fixed, make sure that's what you need to do.

I've decided to root my Desire running OTA 2.2, but I'm not sure which guide to follow. There seems to be many different options, and all tutorials tell different things. Which is the best/safest/easiest way? I'm sure this has been asked before, but I couldn't find any threads for it. Here are some of the guides/methods I'm considering:

The "complete upgrading guide" isn't really an option, since it apparently won't work if "you have installed 2.2 OTA update from HTC". A final inquiry, once I've got root access, which are the must-have apps for rooted devices? I've stumbled across a bunch of them, but it would be nice with some pointers as well

2. There are no 'must have' apps. Ignore Task Killers as they're not needed. You're better just going for a custom ROM

Quick off-topic question: can a device rooted with unrevoked 3 still receive official OTA firmware updates? And if so, when such an update is applied, will the device still be rooted?
You can receive the OTAs (at least if you are still on a stock ROM) but your Root will most likely be gone (as it was the case with the last OTA).
Settings > about phone>system software updates> untick automated option...
because mistakes always do happen and you don't want to in the middle of a day or a weekend..
can someone here also tel me if there is a way to backup de current rom in case somthing happens and need to go back to the vender.
Use rommanager to back up old rom, and also to flash new rom. You can download it from market.

I have read many topics, guides and post about rooting but more i read more confused i get, so i write here in order to get some assist from fellow desire Z owners.
Situation looks like this:
I have Desire Z with Android 2.3.3 and what i read till now, to root this OS the only possibility is to downgrade it in first place, but the downgrade will wipe out current data (or perhaps i'm wrong here?), which i want to avoid.
Then again i want to root my phone to use some app that requires it, and uninstall some unnecessary components, i'm not interested in flashing custom roms right now, so perhaps there is some way to grant such privileges via temp root without downgrading?
Any assistance will be appreciated.

The downgrade guide does have a (very) temporary root, which will allow you to backup your apps and data. It would also allow whatever app you need to run, but not for very long, the system becomes unstable if you leave it exploited.

Ok, understand so follow-up questions:
1. let's say i will do anything till temp-root then do what i want, and then is there a way to close exploit?
2. Or if i will go on, do the full rom backup for example using titanium backup and then restore it after downgrade would it bring back my Andro to 2.3.3 or stay at Froyo?

ad 1. When having temp root you are limited with the things you can do and sometimes the phone does not behave as expected. Temp root does not mean S-OFF, so system partition might not be writeable.
You close the exploit be doing a full reboot of the phone.
ad 2. After downgrade and gaining S-OFF you can install every ROM that is available for your phone. There is a lot of Android 2.3.3 ROMs out there.
VirtuousRom provides some nice Sense ROMS.
The best known "Sense-less" ROM is CyanogenMod 7.1 / 7.2. CyanogenMod 9 is still tested and should soon be available.

Thank you guys for the answers, i did some reading about rooting, adb tutorials, even went through first part of downgrade to get temp-root but at this point i have other questions:
1. I tried to use Titanium Backup to backup my apps, but it don't see them, i searched for solution and it seems that it want's me to update SuperUser.apk but after i do TB dosen't see root anymore, and SuperUser tells that busybox version is wrong, is there any solution to fix it?
2. Is there a reverse guide for unroot and S-ON? i found some using RAGE but i don't know if it would work if i use guide for root?
3. Hboot, is this recommended as i read that this part is where is highest risk of brick?
4. Just for to satisify my curiousity, what will happen if after downgrade i would install OTA Update?
