[Q] Root Gallaxy Nexus without unlocking bootloader (Android 4.2.1) - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello,
I know this question had probably already asked, but I currently not found an answer in my case.
I've a Samsung Gallaxy Nexus with the JOP40D.I9250XWMA2 build (Android 4.2.1).
This is the OTA ROM and my phone is locked.
I search an issue to root my phone without unlocking the bootloader because I need
to backup the SMS database and contact database.
Root access seems to be required to access to /data/data/ with all databases,
but I didn't find an issue to root my phone without unlocking the bootloader.
This is a problem because if I want to unlock, my phone will be wiped and
I will loose all my datas !
I tried to install "Bootunlocker" application, an application to unlock Gallaxy Nexus
without wipe, but this application need a rooted phone, so I cannot use it.
- I also tried framaroot, but without success on my phone.
- I also tried towelroot, but my phone is not supported.
It seem a lot of vulnerabilities used to have root access cannot be exploited on
my phone.
Is somebody have a good issue to root a Gallaxy Nexus without wipe datas and loose
all datas ?
Thank you for your help.

[Q] Root vs Bootloader Unlock

I am pretty sure this has been asked/mentioned before, but to be honest, I really dont feel like looking through/over hundreds of posts and comments trying to get a true solid answer.
My question is, plain and simple. What is/are the major differences between rooting the Galaxy Nexus version 4.0.2 Android and unlocking the bootloader on it ?
I have been searching and so far it looks or sounds like you need to do one before the other, one of them is good for restoring files or something, etc. I have also read that if you are just trying to get the 4.0.4 Android update without having to wait on Verizon stupidity, I can unlock the bootloader, flash the update (or whatever its called) and it will be as if my GNex is rooted, but when I reboot it, it will be stock with all the new stuff that comes with the update, anybody know if this is true or not ?
Unlocking the bootloader just gives you access to the utilities like fastboot that let you root and ROM your device. It removes the "security" that gets in the way of hooking up the phone to a computer and having full control.
Rooting is the process of giving yourself "superuser" (think of it like Administrator) access on the device. Rooting itself doesn't do anything for you, its more about giving apps you install more control of the device.
If you unlock the bootloader to flash an update, you are not rooting your device. You're just flashing a file.
Rooting and unlocking are often confused because on many phones, they're both in the same process and you rarely do one without the other. Usually "rooting" is a catch-all word for modifying your device and changing the software.
Rooting allows you to customize your os. It gives you root access (ie access to everything). To root the nexus you must unlock the bootloader.

I was wondering the same thing, thanks for the answers.

Can I Unroot my UK GNex Without Loosing Data, Apps or Adding Back Stock Apps etc????

Hi, thread title pretty much explains my question. I am a new GNex user having change from an S2 running a Nexus ROM.
The GNex is stock ROM, SIM free, unlocked bootloader and rooted using the Nexus Toolkit and running JB 4.1.1
Now I have my phone just how I want it with apps and settings etc, some stock apps removed like google+ etc. I would like to be able to UNROOT the device so I can run software that does not run on rooted devices like Barclays PingIT.
So is there a reasonably simple way to at least make the device appear unrooted and to not lose any off my apps, settings and to not have anything added back (so flashing factory ROM is not an option)????
Thanks

Unlock/Lock without wipe...if you have SU access.
I've never heard of an app that requires your bootloader to be locked.
But open Superuser (currently running a backup or I'd test) and it should have a temp un-root option.

ok maybe i didnt write my thread correctly...
the lock/unlock is not really an issue as that can be done with nexus toolbox anyway.
the point of the thread is 'can i UNROOT the phone' without loosing settings and apps etc or changing it in anyway. lock/unlock is not really an issue.
i want to be able to use Barclays PingIT for example but it is able to detect if a device is rooted and then stops working.
so unrooting is the issue, not locking the bootloader
thanks
Unlocking the bootloader with that toolkit WILL wipe your data...fyi.
And I just told you.
Open super user.
Swipe the pane all the way to the left.
"Temp Unroot"

yes i am very aware that it wipes my data, bit of a pain but that is learning, i shouldn't have relocked it should i... had it all nice and now i have to do it all again. I did have an app backup though so wont need to download everything. just redo all the settings.
As for SU temp unroot - that does not work, it makes no difference to an app like Barclays PingIT, it still detects the device as rooted.

[Q] unroot nexus 7 without PC?

My nexus7 (2013) has a non functioning USB and I need to send it in for warranty repair. I cannot connect it to a PC and the otg cable no longer works
I used towel root to root, and then lock the bootloader today (originally used wugfresh to root, but after updating to 4.4.4 I lost root access) but am having trouble unrooting
Using super su the software hangs at the "uninstalling, please wait" message when trying to unroot
Is there a way to unroot the nexus 7 without a PC or the USB cable?
You can use OTA Rootkeeper to unroot, but what you're talking about is relocking the bootloader, which is related but different.
You could try this. I never have and so can't tell you if it works, but it's supposed to on the second-gen N7s.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.segv11.bootunlocker
The bootloader is locked, so that's not what I'm trying to do
I downloaded the ota rootkeeper (thanks for that, haven't dl that one yet) and it shows the device isn't rooted, root permission IS granted and system supports root protection
When I run root checker it shows device is rooted
Any idea how I can unroot so I can send back to asus and but appear to have rooted already?
Strange, OTA Rootkeeper should do the job. You clicked the button to delete su backup, right?
But as long as the bootloader is locked, don't worry about it. Put on a password so any repair techs can't boot into full Android. Odds are they wouldn't need to boot fully anyway, and if they did, when confronted with a password they'd just flash back to stock. They might do it anyway to ensure no problems from software. For this reason it's always advised to make backups before sending devices in.

Rooting D855/ Unlocking bootloader, without kingroot

Hi all, I'm new to android rooting, and have been consuming knowledge over the last few days like a large sponge.
I discovered that McAfee had set itself if with admin rights on my phone, and had been sending texts to international numbers without alerting me, took me a good while to find out where the extra charges from my carrier were coming from. Anyway, I cant delete it as its in the ROM, so i rooted the phone (on lollipop) and deleted it, along with some other bloatware that LG and my carrier decided I would want, and then updated the phone to marshmallow (I didn't actually realise marshmallow had been released, I don't keep in the android loop, and my phone always said the latest OS was installed - had to update it through LGs PC suite).
To my abject horror McAfee was back, I can only assume this was due to the update to marshmallow, and not because it somehow survived deletion somewhere on the phone. So now, i need to root the phone, and delete McAfee again, however I really dont want to use Kingroot to do it. Its very shifty, looking at various info on the web, what with it sending information to IPs in China and running services in the background. The other alternative, using Supersu's systemless root, requires the bootloader to be unlocked, but to unlock the bootloader, a root is required (please correct me if any of this information is incorrect, I am pretty new to the android side of things - ive only ever jailbroken iDevices before now). I think im right in saying I could unlock the boot loader if I could access fastboot, but the command 'adb reboot-bootloader' only reboots the phone, rather than booting into the bootloader.
Is there anything I can do to get around this ? Once its rooted and the bloatware deleted, Ill unroot it (I use banking apps and they wont run if the phone is rooted) so I dont want to flash any custom ROMS or anything - just get access to files on the root.

Is it possible to unroot Note7 on 6.0.1?

Hello everyone.
My good old Note7 N-930F threw a fit recently and rebooted to an FRP lock screen. :crying:
After a bit of panick I managed to restore it to original 6.0.1 firmware with original recovery, etc. Basically everything is stock with the exception of Knox (obviously).
I know how to root it (done it before) and only need it so that I can enable the SHealth (with buildProp edit). But then I'd like to un-root the phone since some of the apps won't work on a rooted device (GooglePay, some banking apps, etc.)
What do I need to do to remove root after editing the buildProp? Can the TWRP stay (and work) after the unroot?
Will the phone boot again or will I have to repeat the full wipe/recovery procedure?
Thanks in advance
