hello is there away to do the title of this thread?
I have a unbranded ROM but it's loaded with my operators Data settings, and I'll be loathed to type them in if I decide to return to the stock ROM, so is there a way to save your current ROM incase it goes wrong, or your flash and decide to go back?

Search for r6-desire-root.zip, follow first link in google.
If it fails try it on another os (or pc), it will always succeed
ROM Manager backup. Copy it to your PC for safe keeping.

..with rom manager it really works great; also the restore procedure works - I tried it.

Simple answer is no, it can't be done. You need root to backup your rom.
Actually, you don't need root to do a nandroid backup. Just a custom recovery.

If you have rooted and installed any decent backup software they can backup the entire rom and all settings.
Then even if you mess up your phone and boot loop it, as long as you can get into recovery you can restore everything.
So it serves multiple purposes, I prefer this method to rom manager and titanium backup.

If you can boot into recovery, then wipe all data & restore the latest nandroid backup you had.
If you can't then install an Official HTC RUU ROM (but after that you need to root it again).
The OTA will have replaced the recovery so that can't be done. Flash the 2.29.405.5 RUU, root again and then restore the last nandroid you did

A rooted device?
1. You update it manually from a .zip file, but then you have to ROOT it again.
I do not reccomend this one, because it can cause bootloops, or simply just won't work (depends on many factors).
2. Flash a custom ROM (even pre-rooted custom stock ROMs are on the site). A full list of ROMs can be found here.
As you've just found out, you can't update a rooted stock ROM so you answered your own question

You can't unroot without flashing an RUU so you might as well flash the 2.29.405.5 RUU and then root that

This is what I've found (no changelog tough):
The first positive HTC Desire firmware change is that apps are now installed directly to the SD card for downloading, and I no longer go through the hassle of downloading and then move.
A couple of minor negative:
- The HTC Desire live wallpaper you can get “stuck”. By this I mean that if you use the stock HTC wallpaper live and go to the big screen to the left, a dark blue, to launch an app is a widget, then do not go back directly to the main page, the wall paper will continue to live on the left side of the Most of the screens (ie, that home screen is a darker blue). It looks cool when it happens.
- This HTC Desire update configures the application to sync kits. Just disable it again, then everything is fine.

Sorry, I didn't understand this clearly, could you clarify.
I mean if you restore that it will overwrite the RUU version you want to flash.

Don't you have the rom zip saved? It should say what rom it is. Although you should know what you are flashing.

I would suggest searching the Q&A thread for all this. You should read up before you start installing roms or doing any mods to your phone.

Might I interject here? If the only reason you want to go back to stock recovery is to get the OTA updates, I personally don't think you need to. Typically, Freeza has the most up-to-date Stock, Rooted Rom over in his thread. In my case, he usually has it well before I get the OTA notification from Sprint. If you think his thread is daunting to look at, you really only want to flash one of the following (I always remove direct links to the Roms out of respect for the dev's):

The MC3 Rom is a leak of a new OTA that might come out soon (or it'll be incorporated in a future OTA). The MB1 Rom is the most current, stock Rom. All you have to do is flash it and you're updated. If you need help with how to flash it, you can look to my post over here. Since you're going from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2, I'd recommend a "clean install" (step 5 in my instructions) just to minimize the chance of Force Closes, but you should be good if you want to do a "dirty flash" (only wipe cache and dalvik cache). If you dirty-flash, though, any and all troubleshooting will boil down to doing a clean install and seeing if the problem persists.
Also, CNexus has written up a really good OTA Guide to help you understand the whole OTA thing more and to recognize your options. You can check out his post over here.

Edit: It might also be good to update your Recovery before proceeding. Depending on how old your CWM is, it might be best to get an updated one (with hopefully fewer bugs). Thankfully, Naddict has created updates that are flashable from the Recovery itself. All you have to do is download the one you want (I'm using TWRP 2.5.0.0, but CWM is fine, too) and flash it in your custom Recovery, then reboot into recovery again.

I took your advice and upgraded my ClockworkMod. (I also installed TWRP, which I think overwrote it, but that's another story).
I'm going to go over your post in more detail (hopefully) this weekend.
I tried flashing some different ROMs to see what they were like. I was not impressed, so I went back to stock.
Can you tell me something? If I use TWRP to back up everything, I still need to install GAPPS, right? Then I need to do something with GAPPS and Platinum Backup before I wipe/re-install to keep all/most of my programs/settings, right? Then run GAPPS again after I flash the new ROM?

Yeah, you can only have one recovery installed at once. I use TWRP, others use CWM. In my opinion, it shouldn't matter too much. They're both good and as far as I'm aware, the newest of each are relatively bug-free. The only thing is once you have backups for one, you can't restore them with the other. This isn't that big of a deal, but just an FYI.

I'll break your questions here:
As far as I'm aware, all TouchWiz Roms include GAPPS in them by default. Of the flip side, no AOSP Roms will include them. This is because Google has asked dev's to not include them (in a Rom) unless specifically approved by Google. Samsung has gotten that approval for their TW framework, so any Rom based on TW can (and do) include GAPPS. If you're in doubt and the Rom doesn't say, first re-read the thread, as it's a common question. Then you can just flash the Rom without GAPPS and load up your phone. If GAPPS is included, you'll have a play store. If not, then you can just reboot into recovery and install it. Easy as pie.
I believe you mean Titanium Backup (another precious metal). Using TiBk, I actually have an automatic restore done every morning at 3am. Then if I decide to flash a new Rom, I always have an up-to-date backup of my apps. I never restore system apps, as that's just asking for trouble when switching Roms. I always back up my messages and phone log, but nothing that's red in TiBk. And for most apps, you don't have to restore data (only the app). I only restore data for games and apps like Hulu so I don't have to log in again.

Yeah stock based roms will include GAPPS, AOSP roms cant because they arent officially licensed to distribute them...
As for the original question, I think I have it figured out. If you go to /system/build.prop and open that file, the great majority of devs will modify the relevant lines to the name of their custom roms. On cm roms theres a line called "cm.version=", which devs will usually modify that on a CM rom
The name is in there somewhere...could be changed on a couple lines, or on ALL the relevant lines, but it will be changed most of the time

All you need to do is follow the guide. You can download the MB1 firmware from freezas thread, and then flash an updated version of your rom. If you are on stock rooted, then you can flash one of freezas plain stock rooted roms over what you have (i would recommend a backup first though)
Just a small correction Gapps strictly refers to Google made apps (maps, play store, books, etc) you usually only flash these when working with AOSP roms. You sound like your talking about Touchwiz roms and thus your not loading all your apps through gapps, because Gapps are already included with Touchwiz roms. What you are referring to is reloading all your apps through Google Play Store and using the Google restore feature.

Titanium backup is what I use. Paid version and you dont have to click ok for each app

You don't have to hit ok for each app when you use google restore the correct way. It automatically reloads your apps on your device. TB is a great also but never restore data it is the root of most issues caused when people use it.

I am looking into rooting my GN yakju (4.2.2), but I've still got a few questions:
1. Do I need to unlock the bootloader (or why should I unlock it)?
2. What is a good method to root? I saw a manual way and one with a toolkit.
3. Is it possible to keep my data (on unrooted device) to carry over to the rooted rom (cyanogenmod)?
4. With Cyanogenmod 10.1 M3 is the battery life better or worse than stock?

1. yes . i always you to root and install a custom recovery
2. i use wugfresh for now i trust it
3. only if you back it all up before you unlock the bootloader(erases everything)
4. battery life drains either way it depends on what you do and the rom and kernel cm10.1 is pretty good to me

app data will be lost so passwords and your high score and angry birds will go bye bye
but the stuff on your sdcard
make a folder on your pc under lin gnex back up (thats mine) and drag all the folders over its a long time but it works

be glad im restoring stock tonight for testing reasons lol

4. Click the root button

the toolkit will have a box under "root" that says custom recovery

Use Carbon Backup (renamed to Helium)
Hi,
To backup your data, prior to bootloader unlock (which wipes all your data), you should use Carbon (now renamed to Helium, it seems). You can find it on the Play Store.
For unlock/root/backup/flashing new ROMs you can also use the toolkit available here. It is the one I used and didn't really face any issues.
Also, don't forget to back-up your entire /sdcard (/data/media if on 4.1 or /data/media/0 on 4.2) to your PC.
With regards to battery ROM, there are possibly hundreds of forum posts with this regards and honestly your mileage will vary significantly based on individual usage, network coverage in your region, use of gps/data, ROM, kernel, etc.
Once you are comfortable, rooting and flashing a ROM on your device, I would suggest to check the forums for alternate ROMs and Kernels. Lot of it is trial-and-error. What works for some may not work for you and vice versa.
Besides, there are some ROMs which provide huge list of features which may or may not come at the cost of battery, but are definitely worth trying.
Search this forum for threads about which ROM is the best for ... ? and you might find some useful suggestions.

1) I rooted my phone with HTCDev.com for the sole purpose of installing titanium backup. I tried to unintall some unwanted bloatware (scribble, tv, twitter, zoe, fitbit and more...) but they keep returning after boot. Why is that? Is it related to S-on? Is there a simple way to fix this?
2) My current software version is 1.54.707.7, I can update OTA to 2.22.707.3. Should I? From my experience with my previous samsung device, I'm afraid that updating blindly can cause more harm than good at some cases.
3) Can I update OTA even when I'm rooted? Will I need to replace the recovery and root again?

Regarding (2) Sure you could update vis OTA as long as all system apps and stock recovery ist installed. Did you reinstall stock recovery, or are you unsing some custom recovery? As with custom recovery you can download but not install the OTA. This can then be done even if you are rooted. If you use supersu having the pro version installed you could try activating OTA survival mode and maybe root acces will still be there after performing the OTA. If not you could simply reinstall a custom recovery and using this root.

Regarding (1), I'm not sure I understand what you mean "where and which files". I backed up the mentioned apps in titanium backup, and then uninstalled them, again, with titanium backup. This method worked for me on my previous device (Samsung i9300).
Regarding (2), that's valuable information that I did not get anywhere from reading the sticky posts. I didn't know that the original recovery is needed in order to update OTA. I installed TWRP in order to install SuperSU. Is there a specific version of stock recovery that goes with the device? Or is there just one stock recovery for m8?

Regarding (1), I'm not sure I understand what you mean "where and which files". I backed up the mentioned apps in titanium backup, and then uninstalled them, again, with titanium backup. This method worked for me on my previous device (Samsung i9300).
Regarding (2), that's valuable information that I did not get anywhere from reading the sticky posts. I didn't know that the original recovery is needed in order to update OTA. I installed TWRP in order to install SuperSU. Is there a specific version of stock recovery that goes with the device? Or is there just one stock recovery for m8?

(1) there are two folder /system/app and /system/priv-app. And overall there is the rw settings of the new kernel used. To be abled to unistall unwanted system apps maybe take a look at this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2723463, as maybe you need another kernel to accomplish it.
(2) you have to use a corresponding recovery, meaning you would have to download the 1.54.707.7 recovery (just google for it and you should find it in any forum) to work.
(3) I'm sorry that I can't be of any help here, as I performed an S-OFF debranding my phone and changin the CID to HTC__102 right from the start, setting it up to be on the WWE 2.22.401.4 since then.
3) the newest update (2.22 one) is very stable for me, no problems at all.

1) HTCDev unlocks the boot loader, it doesn't root. This can delete some default system apps, preventing an OTA. In order to have changes to system stick after reboot you need a kernel module: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51543139
2) Don't worry, HTC are much better with updates than Samsung. They work, you can trust them.
3) Once you have unlocked boot loader, you may struggle to update OTA due to the missing apps, but there are threads here explaining what to do. As mentioned, you'll need stock recovery and yes, you may need to root again, after installing your custom recovery after the update.

I tried searching for the recovery, but as always, it's not that simple.. Too many sources of information and I don't know who's genuine. I haven't found a link on XDA yet (to the full stock ROM yes, not for the recovery only).
You say that OTA is a hassle when the recovery is replaced. I'm not stressed on upgrading OTA. How WOULD YOU SUGGEST to upgrade? Downloading the newest stock from XDA and using fastboot?
I created nandroid backups before but never restored one, so JUST TO BE SURE: this backup will be the full snapshot? Meaning: my old version (if the new one sucks) + apps + data? I don't need to backup ANYTHING except doing a nandroid backup?

UPDATE: dug around some more and found the stock recoveries here after following the link from this post.
But before I flash anything, I just want to make sure that:
1) The nandroid I'll do in TWRP is the only backup I need to do.
2) There is no simpler option than returning to stock recovery, updating OTA, returning to TWRP recovery, rooting.
