[Q] How to tell which ROM I've flashed? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I can see Android v4.1.1 on System, About, but I totally forget what ROM I flashed. One of the more popular ones, last October or so. How do I tell what is on the phone?
Thanks, and sorry for the dumb question...

Don't you have the rom zip saved? It should say what rom it is. Although you should know what you are flashing.

Hmmm. Maybe I never *did* flash anything...
"Build number JRO03L.L710VPBLJ7"
Doesn't that mean plain old Jelly Bean?
I vaguely remember installing Clockwork Mod so I could get JellyBean early.
I guess I want to uninstall Clockwork Mod so I can do OTA updates from Sprint, etc. I found these threads, but they are for Galaxy Tab 2...:

But since last fall, I've had to re-install Windows.
So, two questions:
1) Jellybean is standard on Galaxy S3's by now, right?
2) What do I need to install on my PC to uninstall Clockwork Mod Recovery? Odin? Anything else?
Thanks.

I would suggest searching the Q&A thread for all this. You should read up before you start installing roms or doing any mods to your phone.

Might I interject here? If the only reason you want to go back to stock recovery is to get the OTA updates, I personally don't think you need to. Typically, Freeza has the most up-to-date Stock, Rooted Rom over in his thread. In my case, he usually has it well before I get the OTA notification from Sprint. If you think his thread is daunting to look at, you really only want to flash one of the following (I always remove direct links to the Roms out of respect for the dev's):

The MC3 Rom is a leak of a new OTA that might come out soon (or it'll be incorporated in a future OTA). The MB1 Rom is the most current, stock Rom. All you have to do is flash it and you're updated. If you need help with how to flash it, you can look to my post over here. Since you're going from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2, I'd recommend a "clean install" (step 5 in my instructions) just to minimize the chance of Force Closes, but you should be good if you want to do a "dirty flash" (only wipe cache and dalvik cache). If you dirty-flash, though, any and all troubleshooting will boil down to doing a clean install and seeing if the problem persists.
Also, CNexus has written up a really good OTA Guide to help you understand the whole OTA thing more and to recognize your options. You can check out his post over here.
Hope this helps!
Edit: It might also be good to update your Recovery before proceeding. Depending on how old your CWM is, it might be best to get an updated one (with hopefully fewer bugs). Thankfully, Naddict has created updates that are flashable from the Recovery itself. All you have to do is download the one you want (I'm using TWRP 2.5.0.0, but CWM is fine, too) and flash it in your custom Recovery, then reboot into recovery again.

topherk, thanks!
I took your advice and upgraded my ClockworkMod. (I also installed TWRP, which I think overwrote it, but that's another story).
I'm going to go over your post in more detail (hopefully) this weekend.
I tried flashing some different ROMs to see what they were like. I was not impressed, so I went back to stock.
Can you tell me something? If I use TWRP to back up everything, I still need to install GAPPS, right? Then I need to do something with GAPPS and Platinum Backup before I wipe/re-install to keep all/most of my programs/settings, right? Then run GAPPS again after I flash the new ROM?

Yeah, you can only have one recovery installed at once. I use TWRP, others use CWM. In my opinion, it shouldn't matter too much. They're both good and as far as I'm aware, the newest of each are relatively bug-free. The only thing is once you have backups for one, you can't restore them with the other. This isn't that big of a deal, but just an FYI.

I'll break your questions here:
As far as I'm aware, all TouchWiz Roms include GAPPS in them by default. Of the flip side, no AOSP Roms will include them. This is because Google has asked dev's to not include them (in a Rom) unless specifically approved by Google. Samsung has gotten that approval for their TW framework, so any Rom based on TW can (and do) include GAPPS. If you're in doubt and the Rom doesn't say, first re-read the thread, as it's a common question. Then you can just flash the Rom without GAPPS and load up your phone. If GAPPS is included, you'll have a play store. If not, then you can just reboot into recovery and install it. Easy as pie.
I believe you mean Titanium Backup (another precious metal). Using TiBk, I actually have an automatic restore done every morning at 3am. Then if I decide to flash a new Rom, I always have an up-to-date backup of my apps. I never restore system apps, as that's just asking for trouble when switching Roms. I always back up my messages and phone log, but nothing that's red in TiBk. And for most apps, you don't have to restore data (only the app). I only restore data for games and apps like Hulu so I don't have to log in again.
Hoep this helps!

Yeah stock based roms will include GAPPS, AOSP roms cant because they arent officially licensed to distribute them...
As for the original question, I think I have it figured out. If you go to /system/build.prop and open that file, the great majority of devs will modify the relevant lines to the name of their custom roms. On cm roms theres a line called "cm.version=", which devs will usually modify that on a CM rom
The name is in there somewhere...could be changed on a couple lines, or on ALL the relevant lines, but it will be changed most of the time
Hope this helps

Is there a way to just directly upgrade Jellybean from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2 without having to re-install (via Gapps?) all of my applications, etc.?
I thought I read that I could unroot, do the OTA upgrade, then root again? I'm reading the OTA guide by CNexus, and 'freezing' the update app seems like a good option, but that just keeps the nag screen away.

All you need to do is follow the guide. You can download the MB1 firmware from freezas thread, and then flash an updated version of your rom. If you are on stock rooted, then you can flash one of freezas plain stock rooted roms over what you have (i would recommend a backup first though)

Just a small correction Gapps strictly refers to Google made apps (maps, play store, books, etc) you usually only flash these when working with AOSP roms. You sound like your talking about Touchwiz roms and thus your not loading all your apps through gapps, because Gapps are already included with Touchwiz roms. What you are referring to is reloading all your apps through Google Play Store and using the Google restore feature.

Yes! I'm talking about:
1) Backing up everything on my Galaxy S3
2) Installing other ROMs (sometimes stock, sometimes AOSP)
(side question: "stock" = "TouchWiz"???)
3) Magically re-installing *all* of my apps in the new ROM by clicking a single button
To do that, I'll need to use the "Google restore" feature?

You don't have to hit ok for each app when you use google restore the correct way. It automatically reloads your apps on your device. TB is a great also but never restore data it is the root of most issues caused when people use it.

[Q] A few questions regarding root

So now that root is out, I have a few questions regarding it.
1. Will this stock kernel get rid of CWM?
2. If I use that stock kernel to revert back to the original system, will all my files be deleted?
3. What exactly did CWM replace on the original system?
4. Was it a bad idea to root my phone if I wanted to upgrade to ICS? The "to do" thread in the dev forum says ICS will be available for the SGS2, so will a rooted phone have problems installing the update?
5. I installed TitaniumBackup already, what other apps are very useful for a rooted phone?
6. I did not know to install ROM Manager before I did the backup in recovery mode.. is this a problem?
Thank you!
1. Yes, it effectively reverts CWM recovery image
2. No, it looks like it only affects the recovery image
3. CWM replaced the stock recovery image, allowing you to boot into ClockworkModRecovery
4. No, ICS, if and when it's released, will almost certainly be released by devs as a standalone ROM, that would probably be pre-rooted.
5. I installed CifsManager, for mounting network shares, SetCPU to underclock (and overclock when the time comes), and possibly Root Explorer for modifying build.prop settings.
6. ROM Manager isn't a requirement at all.

I know that I could get a version of ICS from a ROM, but would a rooted phone be unable to download the official version of ICS without problems?

This is not correct. You WILL get updates with root as long as you DO NOT remove any bloatware. The update package runs a check to make sure all the files it has matchup with all the files on your phone (in the /system folder). If you have removed bloatware, your phone will fail this check and you will be unable to receive OTAs.
That said, the OTAs will also be quickly rooted and pre-rooted, new OTA stock roms will be available for flashing (meaning you can get the update from here!).
Another alternative would be to do a NANDroid backup of your phone BEFORE removing any bloatware. Then, when an OTA is available you could simply NANDroid back and be able to receive it.
One last thing, it is very likely that when you apply an update to a rooted phone, you will lose root. There have been times where this has not happened but it is EXTREMELY rare.

Help me find a ROM, one step closer to JB on my GSM Nexus

Hello all!
So I rooted and unlocked the bootloader on the Galaxy Nexus using the rather noobish way of WugFresh's toolkit.
I know that TWRP is installed and working, as well as root is working. My next question would be that, given my build,
Here as some specs:
Android Version: 4.0.1
Baseband Version: I9250UGKK7
Kernel: 3.0.1-ge2433f2 [email protected] #1
Build Number: ITL41D.I9250UGKK7
I know that it's origianlly unlocked and Canadian GSM/HSPA+ model.
I am looking for two things:
a) a ROM that I could flash on my Nexus - of 4.1.1 JellyBean.
b) a revovery image that would work, in case something screws up.
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images has images, but none of the stock ITL41D build. (I keep getting references to Verizons images)
Oh and lastly, the Nandroid backup I did; if something goes wrong, and I am no longer on 4.0.1 ICS, - say in a unusable state, but I can access TWRP, will restoring the backup also restore all files and bring it (the phone) to a usable state (for example, say if I install JB, and do a recovery, will my recovery nandroid backup revert it back to ICS?)
Thanks!

This process will make you lose root and wipe everything, including /sdcard/. I believe you have Samsung build right now, and you need to flash yakju or takju. Good luck
Also, you shouldn't use toolkit... Here's why

Thanks.
I understand the the reason for not using the One-step-root kits, however, I feel that in this case it may be somewhat justified. I work with Linux almost daily (by use I mean not simple Ubuntu stuff, but IBM AIX, PHP, perl, shell scripting compiling using gcc), and have no 'fear' of just enterting commands into terminal, or writing a simple shell script to do if for me.
Essentially you are setting the SUID bit (chmod 4xxx) and root. (as far as I understand). I just am somewhat hesitant in the land of phones, where I am kind-of paranoid of things breaking.
And please forgive me if what I said is sounding like I am trying to defunc your reasoning, and I fully agree - using one step anything is usually a bad choice, I was just justifying why I did it.
From what I understand, the 1 root toolkit did this:
Unlock bootloader -> flash TWRP -> install SuperSU binaries for root -> done.
But with TWRP, wouldn't that allow me to install a custom ROM such as yours. AOKP JB 1 (http://aokp.co/index.php/releases/_/jellybean-build-1-r28) Maguro?
Am I write in thinking that if I were to reboot into TWRP, factory reset -> flash gapps and the AOKP JB ROM, it's pretty much the same process?
I used to think that I wanted the Stock, official, JB build, but there really isn't enough customization options there.
I had a HP Touchpad with ICS CM9, and a Droid 2 Global with CM9, and I really loved the custom ROM features there.
Thanks!
I used a toolkit and I think they're a great option. After I started flashing ROMS I have been on forums nonstop. I learn from others questions and resources that are available. I feel a great deal more comfortable now than I did 4 months ago when I rooted. If I have a question I will search out the answer and if I can't find it or its too difficult to understand I will ask. Also when others post a question that my limited knowledge can answer, I will. That's why this community exists. We help each other out.
I do however understand the frustration that some have with people who come here and ask the same question that has been asked a hundred times before. There is no excuse for laziness and laziness will exist with or without Toolkits. Not all people who use toolkits are unwilling to help themselves or unable to learn the process.
Just saying.

As long as everything goes well, toolkits are easy indeed. But if somethings screws up, most toolkit users have no clue whatsoever what they need to do to fix it (just browse a few pages of history of the Q&A forum to see what I mean). That's why lots of regular helpers here advise against them. So not a grain of salt, but with good reason.
You can also read the advice as: don't mess with something you don't understand.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, cuz I don't know this either, but I think you need to update radio.img, bootloader.img and userdata.img in order to move to Jelly Bean. I don't know if custom ROM has that...
I know that JB and ICS use two seperate bootloaders, however I thought this was only the case for official OTA updates?
Reason why I think it's only for OTA is this:
http://aokp.co/index.php/releases/_/jellybean-build-1-r28
Download build for your device, place on SD card
Download gapps, place on SD card
Reboot into recovery
Wipe/factory reset! If you think you can get away without wiping from ICS -> JellyBean, you won't be happy camper. Wipe!
Flash jb-build-1
Flash Gapps
Reboot
So this implies that you don't need to update the bootloader, radio and userdata images.
I boot into TWRP -> reset/wipe -> flash gapps and jb -> done?
I don't believe that anything else needs to be done. I am pretty sure that the baseband radio is fine, and should work. Userdata image may be included?
BUT you are completely right about factory install of JB:

Almost every iteration of Android for the GNex has had a new bootloader, it is not only JB and ICS.
Some have reported issues using JB on bootloaders older than LA03. I would recommend you update.
Isn't this phone a Maguro build? If that's the case you should be able to flash about any ROM.
Make a nandroid before flashing and flash them all until you find one that suits your needs.

I have been flashing JB for over a month and just updated my bootloader last week. Not because I was having trouble, but because I figured I would do it while I was updating my radios. The JB bootloader is said to possibly speed up boot time but I haven't noticed any difference.

I did make a nandroid backup, already, but a few questions about that:
When you do make one, is it a complete backup, where if something goes wrong, everything even OS will be recovered (i.e. all hypothetical. I am on Android 2.3 GB, make a nandroid backup, install ICS, then revert nandroid snapshot (while on ICS), will I be back to a usable state of GB?)
Also, updating the bootloader will only update the /boot partition and not the /recovery partition, right? Or will it also flash my TWRP on the /recovery partition back to the stock Recovery?
Thanks!

A nandroid backup will back up the following partitions: boot, recovery, system, cache, and all data in /data except /sdcard. So to answer your question, yes, I it is essentially a complete backup other than the radio and bootloader, and but all of the radios are available in the radio thread, and all of the bootloaders are available in the bootloader thread.
As for your other question, the bootloader does not update the boot partition. The boot partition contains your kernel, not the bootloader. Flashing the bootloader does not wipe/replace any other partitions. You should really have a read of the 'basics' link in my signature.

I usually make my backups after I wipe the cache. The backup will save your system as it is at the time it is done including apps, data and setup. You want to make a nandroid of your phone while it is stable so you can revert to a stable build if something goes wrong.
Updating the bootloader will not change your recovery.

Some questions regaerding root, stock, and update?

1. I have my note 2 rooted if I want to go back to stock I've read that you need to flash the stock rom. (If this is not right let me know).
Where can I find the stock rom?
Ive found one that's called L900VpaLJ. on my phone it say L900vpalJc is this the same?
2. Im looking to flash a custom rom since In rooted might as well enjoy it.
More than a question Im looking for some suggestions. Im looking for something that improves the battery, and maybe the audio.
Im not looking to change any of the graphics (booting image) sounds it makes.
Any suggestions?
3. Ive read around that there is a 4.1.2 update. Is this official? Is it for the international or does it include sprint?
If not official when would you guess it'll be released?
Let me thank you in advanced for taking the time to read this.
Getting to Stock

Okay, if you want the original firmware/rom that was released with the Note II initially from Sprint, here is that:
http://stockroms.net/file/GalaxyNote2/SPH-L900/SPH-L900_L900VPALJ1_L900VPALJ1_L900SPTALJ1.zip
^ Flash that in Odin.
(If you don't know how to use Odin, i'll teach you)
If you want to upgrade the firmware on the above rom (Official Sprint Update), flash this in TWRP:
http://stockroms.net/file/GalaxyNote2/SPH-L900/SPH_L900_LJ1_to_LJC.zip
That's all stock (except the Team Win Recovery [TWRP] )
If you have any questions just post them.

If you want a good steady (awesome and probably best) rom, get this one.
It's the JellyBomb ROM by Team Venum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957773
^ Just go onto that thread, download the latest version (12.1), and out it onto your external SD card.
There is a rom with the Aroma installer, which pretty much lets you choose the mods to put on it, and there is another rom without the Aroma installer, which I would recommend for you, being a beginner and all.
If you have any questions just post them.
Once it's on your external SD card, boot your phone into recovery mode (TWRP) and install the .zip file you downloaded.
2. No offense but I would not recommend jelly bomb if he's looking to keep things as stock as possible (graphics, etc). I'd go through the roms in Android Development and look for a stock custom rom. I used to use project rom that was pretty stock at the time, ,may still be..
For audio, u can tweak settings in Stweaks, an app included with many roms. If it's not included chances are its still compatible and u should get it. My phone is soo loud through the speakers so well as auxiliary

So I reffered him to the ROM I also flashed first, to enjoy the Note II for a little while until he wants to go back towards stock again.
Question I just got the note 2. Um really impressed my old device was the evo lte.
Now my question do I need to be s off to flash radio updates or I just need to be rooted? Sorry if I just sound dumb but I was with htc for to long its my first samsung

There is no S-Off on samsung devices. In lieu of a locked bootloader they use a custom binary flash counter and a stock recovery auto install script that over writes custom recovery on boot, CWM and TWRP via goomanager disable the script, flash counter can be reset if warranty is needed
I like to break stuff!

[Q] New to Flashing Carrier Specific Custom Roms

I am fairly new to the android Mod community although I have been flashing Custom ROMs on my Nexus 7 for a couple of months now.
I recently just got a AT&T Samsung GSIII and of course almost the very first thing I did was ROOT it. Now I would like to flash some ROMs....
But before I do I have a few questions.....
1. I want to install TWRP instead of CWM..... will this trip my flash counter? (I manged to root my phone without tripping it.)
2. I read a lot of posts about people needing to flash their Modem and set APN settings after flashing their phones. If I use a AT&T Rom will I have to do either of those?
3. I read posts about people loosing their 4G LTE after flash.... how common is this and is there a fix?
I was able to find answers to some of this question here (For Example Custom ROMs actually register correctly and are not embellished like on carrier specific roms) However My questions on APNs still stand http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1947376
4. I actually pay for Wifi Tethering (I know stupid... I didn't know better at first) however if I flash to an AT&T custom ROM will this option disappear in the settings? Since most custom ROMs have different settings menus?
I would really love to try flashing this weekend.... so if you guys and all of your wisdom can help out I would appreciate it.
Thanks
1. No. Follow the link in my signature. Near the bottom of post #2 there are cwm and twrp download links. Grab the one you want, boot into recovery and flash it. Under advanced, reboot recovery. Make a backup.
2. Not likely. I haven't had to
3. The LTE issues tend to be on ported and multi carrier roms
4. You will still have wifi tether options on most or all roms

thanks for the info
one more question if you don't mind....
So I need to make a Nandroid back up of course, should I make a IMEI back up as well? And are there any other settings that are essentail I back up before flashing?
Ooops I guess I lied I thought of something else too....
When you say multi-carrier ROM would you consider a rom including ATT/Rodgers?etc.... a multi carrier rom? Or would you consider a rom that spans ATT/Verizon/US Cellular a mult carrier rom. This might seem like a weird question but I only ask because I thought ATT/Rodgers/ and a few others were related companies some how.
Could you give me some examples of ROMs that are mult-carrier and not multi-carrier
thanks
I made a backup of my imei. I think it's smart to do right from the start. That's why I put it as step 1 and my thread.
A multi carrier rom would be one that is made to supposedly work on say at&t, sprint & verizon devices...and this is my experience with these

Thanks bud you have been a big help.
One more thing if you don't mind.... any roms you would like to suggest that meet the following criteria?
Customizable
Stable
Smooth
Not asking to choose one over another just some good starting points

I happen to use Smoothrom on my Nexus 7 which is an AOKP rom. However I did dig the feel of CM10.1 as well..... I noticed Goo manager has both maybe I will check those out.
Thanks again

Heck no.... of course not... I just use it to look for names of ROMs..... then I go to the thread online associated with that ROM and read what people who have used it say about it.
I do this because there are so many ROMs out there.
I gotcha. Just making sure.
I'm on the AOKP 4.2.2 milestone released a few days ago. it's running great with ktoonsez kt747 kernel

Sorry, I have question with Flash Counter. as I understood form mrRobinson's OP if you flash his rooted stock image, you won't trip the counter, but if you install customer recovery (didn't matter if you intall custom rom later), it will absolutely trip the counter.

Android laying down with red triangle after OTA update

First of all I would like to apologize for posting this because this probably happens a lot, but I couldn't find any forums to fix this, so I would be very grateful if someone could help me or send me a link to another forum with the same problem and solutions.
So I just did an OTA update on a rooted Samsung Galaxy SIII SPH-L710 phone and while doing the update it said that root access might be lost, attempt to fix? and so I pressed yes..so now and it turns on but will never get past the Samsung logo right before it gets to the homepage/apps or whatever. I have gone into recovery and data reset like 5 times already to no avail, and when I go into recovery..there are only like 6 options most are just apply update, there are no restore options. I had CWM installed but that's not showing up anymore. Yes I know I'm an idiot for trying to update on a rooted phone, but I would really appreciate any help that you guys can offer!

Ok, at this point, the thing I'd have you do is to flash a stock rooted Rom through Odin (while in download mode). The files are found in Sextape's thread over in their forums (warning, external link). Since you already wiped your user data and rooted, you should flash the "Restore" Version: SPH-L710_MD4_1130792_Rooted_Restore. They have directions on their page, so it should be nice.
Once you have root, you can use Goo Manager or Rom Toolbox to get a custom recovery back.
Thank you!! I will try this out and get back to you on whether it works or not.
And another note
Just to add something: In the future, please do not accept any OTA updates. If you're running a custom recovery or have frozen any stock apps, the OTA will fail (sometimes it'll get part of the way through, like yours did).
The best way to keep your phone up-to-date is to just flash the latest stock rooted rom when it comes out. Freeza typically has the latest stock rooted rom over in his thread, and for the most part, gets his Rom updated way before I ever get the OTA. You'll want to get the DeOdex version and if you're coming from a stock rooted Rom, you can do a "dirty flash" (only wipe cache and dalvik cache), no need to lose your user data.
Again, if you're running a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) you're asking for trouble if you try an OTA update.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! It worked perfectly, just took me awhile to download it because my internet sucks. Also thanks for the additional tip, I will remember to not screw this up again
