hello is there away to do the title of this thread?
I have a unbranded ROM but it's loaded with my operators Data settings, and I'll be loathed to type them in if I decide to return to the stock ROM, so is there a way to save your current ROM incase it goes wrong, or your flash and decide to go back?
TIA Luke.
Nandroid backup - which you will certainly be doing before flashing anything new. Won't you?
Thinks - you are rooted aren't you?

Simple answer is no, it can't be done. You need root to backup your rom.
Actually, you don't need root to do a nandroid backup. Just a custom recovery.

I am new to this, coming from iphone. I just love all the features and customizations availalbe.
Rooting on my galaxys4 was easy. thanks all
Thanks for this info too. just what i was looking for.
:good:
If you have rooted and installed any decent backup software they can backup the entire rom and all settings.
Then even if you mess up your phone and boot loop it, as long as you can get into recovery you can restore everything.
So it serves multiple purposes, I prefer this method to rom manager and titanium backup.

Hey guys,
I would like to root my phone mainly for the backup abilities and the ability to delete some of the apps that were pre-loaded on the phone.
So I have a few questions about rooting...
Which method should I use?
When I root my phone do I have to install a rom or can I keep what I have going on now?
When I want to update, do I have to use roms or can I use the updater on the phone?
Will everything be erased?
Is it even worth it?
Will I gain better battery life?
thank you in advance.
You should use the rooting guide that is applicable to your phones software version. If you are running 1.47 then use the rooting guide for that, if it is a smaller version start with toasts guide to rooting part 1. These guides are found in the dev section.
When you install a new Rom it will replace what you have now. You can use a stock rooted Rom or a custom Rom depending on what you want. There are backup tools if you have apps or data you want to save before flashing a new Rom.
After you root never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever take an ota update. Wait for the update to be incorporated into a Rom and then flash the new Rom.

Hey thanks alot for the info man... is there a sertain backup tool you would suggest to save the things i have now and put them on after the root is done?
i use titanium backup..
Downloaded titanium backup... gunna try to root today or tomorrow, we'll see how it goes
Hey every. Sorry if this question is already answered and it is a repost. How can i uninstall Cyanogenmod 7 RC2 from my Incredible, but still keep it rooted? Would the same way work for other ROMs as well, or does each ROM have a different way to remove them? Thank you in advance for your help.
If you made a backup then you can easily restore.
If you didn't, then you can flash the stock incredible ROM.
You will continue to stay rooted unless you take additional steps to unroot your phone.
Also I think you may have a misconception of how the ROM's work. These aren't installed on top of your phone, they remove the old one and replace it with whatever ROM you flash. Of course as long as you made a backup before you flashed then how your phone was before the flash will be right there if you ever choose to restore.
I did backup before I installed the Cyanogenmod 7. How do i 'recover'? Also, if i were to flash, would this take me back to being unrooted?
The way I understood it you can use ROM manager to load the Nandroid you created before flashing CM7, bringing back all your settings/text/calls etc you had before flashing your new rom. I've yet to attempt to go back to stock so someone correct me if I'm wrong.
You'll keep root unless to take the steps to go from s-off to s-on, and flash the stock RUU. Restoring a nandroid will restore the backup to the exact point the backup was made, so make regular backups!
Searched and cannot find themost current stock incredible ROM, any help?

Haven't flashed it yet, but this is the first of many that link actually was live. Thank you.
Ok. So i havent done anything because I am extremely busy, but now i have some time to get this done. As it is, I'm going to have to unroot my phone, putting it back to stock. How do i do this so that the s-off goes to s-on, and make sure everything is done properly? Thx for all your help
pretty sure you just flash the stock ruu and then run the unrevoked s-on tool.
i would run a factory reset before running the ruu and then again after just to make sure you are totally bone stock.
Should I use Rom manager to flash or use something else? Sorry for all the questions, just want to do this without problems.

If you made a backup power off the phone and reboot it into recovery. Go to the "Back Up and Restore" Tab and then restore. Choose the date and you are back.

Ok ..and for me to be able to get to the last rom?(to update to 2.3.x.x)(OTA) Must I have s-on and eng-on in order to see the updates? or not?
Sorry but I have to ask, it is understandable if you want to revert back to stock if you are claiming for the warranty fix, but why do you want to get the OTA update when the modded rom here is far superior (IMO)
Hm,I think I just want to feel the real rom......... and btw do you know a way for install multiple apk at same time(all of them are games...should i .rar them and then flash or how?)
The quickest way is by backuping and restoring through google. Immediately after flashing, it will automatically download all your apps. Personally, I enjoy installing and tweaking manually the apps one by one.
Another way is of course via Titanium Backup Pro. You can do Batch backup and restore. It's a paid apps by the way.
Installing via CWM... never heard that it's possible

Then install a rooted version of the "real ROM". It is IDENTICAL except no branding (is that what youwant?) and it's rooted.

You can't just bundle them in a rar no.
As mentioned above, you will need to use Google backup or an application like Titanium to back them up. Both methods will perform an auto restore. Please note that this means they will DOWNLOAD all the apps again.
off that's too bad I would have been so pleased if there was a way...
You still don't have to do anything, the Google backup / 3rd party backup apps do it all for you. And even if you could, depending on how old the backup was you could still end up having many apps needing an update.
It really isn't a big deal and I can't see how it would be any easier.
I downloaded a pack of games from a torrent site...and i wanted to install them all at once....they are all apk's......and to do it manually takes a while..
I just remember... there's a utility called ROM cleaner. Last time I checked there's an option to add apk into the rom itself (experimental). So once you flash your rom, technically all the apk is there.
Just a caution, I didn't follow the utility thread, there's a good chance that it is not compatible with the new gingerbread.
Hi,
I am looking into rooting my GN yakju (4.2.2), but I've still got a few questions:
1. Do I need to unlock the bootloader (or why should I unlock it)?
2. What is a good method to root? I saw a manual way and one with a toolkit.
3. Is it possible to keep my data (on unrooted device) to carry over to the rooted rom (cyanogenmod)?
4. With Cyanogenmod 10.1 M3 is the battery life better or worse than stock?
I hope anyone can help me with these questions,
thanks in advance!

So if I want to root with wugfresh I have to do this:
1. Start the application
2. Backup my stuff
3. Click the unlock button
4. Click the root button
5. Flash the Cyanogenmod 10.1 M3 ROM?
Do I have then also a good custom recovery? I didn't set it up in the folder.

Use Carbon Backup (renamed to Helium)
Hi,
To backup your data, prior to bootloader unlock (which wipes all your data), you should use Carbon (now renamed to Helium, it seems). You can find it on the Play Store.
For unlock/root/backup/flashing new ROMs you can also use the toolkit available here. It is the one I used and didn't really face any issues.
Also, don't forget to back-up your entire /sdcard (/data/media if on 4.1 or /data/media/0 on 4.2) to your PC.
With regards to battery ROM, there are possibly hundreds of forum posts with this regards and honestly your mileage will vary significantly based on individual usage, network coverage in your region, use of gps/data, ROM, kernel, etc.
Once you are comfortable, rooting and flashing a ROM on your device, I would suggest to check the forums for alternate ROMs and Kernels. Lot of it is trial-and-error. What works for some may not work for you and vice versa.
Besides, there are some ROMs which provide huge list of features which may or may not come at the cost of battery, but are definitely worth trying.
Search this forum for threads about which ROM is the best for ... ? and you might find some useful suggestions.
All the best.
Hi there,
I have a very brief question:
My M8's bootloader is unlocked, it was rooted + S-OFF and I modified the CID. I also had a custom recovery installed but decided to stay with the stock one in order to get original HTC OTA updates. So, after a recent OTA: Root is gone.
My question: When I flash a new bootloader and apply the root (mediafire) - Will any data be wiped in the process? Just asking because I don't have an (easy) method of backuping at the moment... no Titanium without root, no nandroid without custom recovery
Thanks in advance!

Easy
1, flash custom recovery
2, flash superuser zip
3, look HERE for the backup corresponding to your software number
4, there will be a stock recovery contained within the backup package, flash it
5, you will be as you were but rooted and with a stock recovery and you will be able to receive otas as long as the conditions HERE are met :good:
Obviously the next OTA will break root but u know what u are doing now lol
Thank you very much, exocetdj! Consider it done.
I will probably not go back to stock recovery however. I *really* was thinking with this phone I will keep the stock ROM, but I was looking into the Android Development section here yesterday night and....ahh, damn it, I can't resist anymore
Cheers

Yeah I most certainly know. My HTC Desire and GS3 wouldn't have survived that long if it was not for XDA-dev
But you know... at some point you have so much work to do you are really just glad if the stuff works reliably. But then again... All those tweaks and nice themes... It's just soo tempting...
