[Q] Need explanation - Samsung Galaxy Gio GT-S5660

I have flashed CM 7.2 RC-1 Patch 4 and started thinking what does it do better. Why should you flash custom rom in the first place?
Sent from my GT-S5660 using xda premium

Frequent updates which are focused more on bugs.
Performance options (overclocking etc.).
Styling options.
Other options like there is HW acceleration in CM7 which is not in stock roms.
That's all I can think of at the moment.
But I seriously don't know why CM uses adw launcher. It looks awful and very cheap as compared to TWlauncher. Same as in GioPro with QQ launcher.

@samydroid True story! Do you have TW launcher in CM7.1? Where can I get it from? I use Launcher Pro at the moment but as the project is discontinued, it lacks a lot of functionality that a modern launcher should have but its speed is incomparable! Haven't seen anything faster than it!

You can find transparent twlauncher's download link in first or second post of cm7.1 thread. You are right. I also found launcherpro and go launcher to be faster than others but heck they look so cheap to me. I've always been confused about launchers lol.

Mostly people install custom ROMs to enable finer performance tuning (that includes not only overclocking but tuning, say, Dalvik heap size and such), other tuning options and such. Also they choose custom ROMs because there's no stock junk in there.
Say, I've went to CM because: it has built-in sd-ext support, most Samsung junk removed, much better performance control (say, I'm able to select Smartass governor and control my CPU without installing any software), has built-in theming support. Also CM has RAM compression.
So I found CM being much faster than stock ROM, that's why I moved to it.
P.S. CM having ADW Launcher by default isn't a problem. You can install whatever launcher you want, even TouchWiz (the latter by update.zip method). I prefer GO Launcher Ex, though.

CMod
Can you assist me in installing CM Mod. I know there is no official version for the Gio. I have GIngerbread running as root.

[Debate]What rom and why?

Alright.. so we all probably use virtuous rom, gingervillian, cyanogen or miui.
I wanna know why everyone chooses each one.. I've flashed all and am just curious to why everyone else chooses the roms they do.. what really makes you stay with the rom you have??
I run miui. To me cyanogen lacks full customization. And has no benefitial features over miui. I get same battery life and phone runs smoothly at 1ghz as it would on any other rom. ONLY issue is random reboots. Which is a theme issue not a rom issue.. And I don't care for sense roms.. to me they slow the phone down.. although I am waiting for cm7 to become stable before my first flash.
Sent from my G2.
Currently I am running MIUI. I'm still getting used to it but overall I like it. I love the UI. It looks clean and it's quick.
Stock post ota deodexed.... because every other rom gives me some sort of problem that there is no guide to fixing and I don't have the time to troubleshoot the bull****
Whats deodexed mean??

The 1.2Ghz clock speed from the God speed thread.
Anything higher than that affects my battery and I don't see any obvious benefit as I don't play any games that need a higher CPU.
virtuous because of eye candy and htc streams are awesome!!
which rom saves battery most?
I use CM6.1.1
I previously tried Virtuous because I always wanted a Sense phone but realized Sense actually sucks, well the messaging, gallery and dialer at least.
I use my phone heavily for A2DP bluetooth streaming and apperantly cyanogenmod is pretty much the best rom for bluetooth audio quality, also the added equalizer feature is awesome. Its just like the stock rom whish I loved since my nexus days but with just the right amount of customization.
MIUI looks annoying as hell, why not just buy an iDevice if your into that UI?

When you install an app, sometimes it comes with an odex file (i believe it's an extension of some sort to the app) When you are de-odex'd, it merges the extension (dot odex file) with the apk. The only reason I wanted this rom was to use themes for stock roms. I also found that it boots the phone up a hell of a lot faster.
Highly recommended for people who want the stock feel but like small mods here and there.

That's not a rom...
that's a kernel........... *facepalm*
I run Virtuous for a few reasons:
1. camera - the stock Android camera app is abysmal. Few options and not easy to use in the least.
2. music player - genre support is a big one for me
3. Sense - I use LauncherPro, but I prefer the sense contacts and other features.
4. I installed the 3D gallery from stock, so I have access to both. One other small benefit of the otherwise useless Sense gallery is a scrollable 'share' pop-up. On stock ROMs (or CM), if you have too many options in this menu, you can't scroll so you can't access them. Sense lets you scroll the 'share' list.

Not everything about miui is iphonish... and even the parts that are you have options.. the menus? I turn those to the standard grid. the icons? Not all are uniformed "squares" all thou the theme is use they are. But I actually am I fan of uniformed icons. I think it looks cleaner.. imho. What about miui looks annoying?? I admit the original launcher is lame. But I don't use it.. I think docks and notification bars are lame. I don't use either and rock adw.. swipe down for notifications and up for apps. plus you can't tell me miui lock screen isn't sexy..

Fastest rom without launcher (aosp)

Hi guys. basicly my favourite roms are miui and ilwt350 but I would like to make them even faster by using aosp. Is there a way to do this? Or roms that are aosp are bad and i really need launcher?
I am leaning towards ilwt350 but it comes with adw launcher/go launcher and I am not really into one or another, so It wouldnt hurt to try it aosp if there is a way

ok, i don't know if AOSP ROMs can run without a launcher... but try this: in ILWT, theres an ILWT.txt file, you can edit that file to make the flashing not install any launcher... (launcher=none)... try it, but i don't think it'll work though
—————

it don't work. Rom doesnt start then
That's only there in case you want to install a custom launcher using the function to install custom apps. You're saying you want to install the AOSP launcher?
If so, courtesy of martonikaj:

Make sure to hit the thanks button in his post if it helped you.
I don't think the OP understands what the Launcher does in Android? Or what AOSP means?
Not to rag on you, but just want to clear these things up before we go any further.
The long answer:
AOSP: Short for "Android Open Source Project"; it's like the complete vanilla version of what Android was designed to be. Minus all the skins (Sense, Blurr, Touchwiz, etc...) and carrier bloat, it is the essence of what the AndroidOS is.
Launcher: The GUI (Graphical User Interface) of Android, the stock (AOSP) version of Android has this to access the various parts of the OS (Phone, App Drawer, Contacts, Apps, etc...). There are various other kinds of launchers out there with different features (ADW Launcher, LauncherPRO, GOLauncherEX, etc..) and carrier themed versions (Sense, Blurr, Touchwiz, etc...).
The short answer:
The lightest weight launcher that you could possibly use is the stock AOSP launcher. Android cannot function (graphically) without a launcher (to my knowledge).
ok thanks. I think I needed an explanation of some kind even tho i thought I know what it is
I am asking for pure android launcher. There is always, sense, touchwiz, launcherpro or adw.
Or shouldnt I even bother? I am kinda used to sense but can't find any "perfect" version. best sense for Z is 2,1 but virtuous sense 2.0.0 have this major problem and don't keep apps in memory after I go to home screen. Listening to music, pause, check messages, go back and pause is reset to start of the song (or 3hour podcast and then I have to search where Ive finished listening)
games are constantly restarting every minute like plants vs zombies.
I guess that You will advise me to use launcher. What is fastest with ilwt then? stock adw?
also another question. hd videos are working great on sense 3,5 roms while I have to oc to hell on every other rom and they stil jitter. Why is that? Other than default player doesnt help.
Thanks for help
I'm using the paid version of ADW, which is ADW EX. It's totally worth the money and it is A LOT SMOOTHER than the free counterpart. If you can spare a tiny amount of money it's definitely worth buying!
By HD you mean videos that are at about 1280x720, right? If so have you tried MX Video Player? If not then download it from the market (it's free).
Works very smooth at 1,1GHz, try this video as a preview http://www.tools4movies.com/Droid/nfs_hp_2010.mp4
Yeah. I am talkinga about .mp4 720p video, like trailers or movies.
I have 3 movies as my preview and those work just like every other move, no stuttering or whatsoever on sense 3,5 but on any other system, they fail. on cm350 ilwt, Gallery doesnt see tham and MX video player play them only software. HW is not even avaible
Try downloading the MX Player NEON codec. It's in the market.

I had the same problem as you. I am currently running G2Slim. It's the fastest and smoothest/fastest 'vanilla like' rom you can find and it has SUPERB battery life! I mean you get like 200+ free ram after booting The only price you pay is that it's ugly and it misses some of the great sense things like the dialer application.
If you just cant say farewell to sense, in this post I've listed some ROM's that have sense elements but not the Sense launcher (ROSIE). So basically they are senseless ROM's that still have sense (like the dialer etc).
P.S. The smallest launcher, to my knowledge, is ZEAM Launcher. You can grab it from the market or you can find the original post by the author here
I've been on several different launchers for GB now:
Stock
ADW
LauncherPRO
GOLauncherEX
Sense
MIUI (I know this is a ROM itself, but talking more about the UI)
Of the launchers, for AOSP ROMs, I would ALWAYS ditch the stock launcher (whether it be Stock, ADW or LauncherPRO) for GOLauncherEX. It comes with the majority of the conveniences of Sense without the RAM hogging bloat. For me, it seems to be the best balance of functionality and speed. There were features that were missing in the other launchers (Resizing any widget, full screen calendar widgets, etc...) that I really couldn't live without.
I would suggest trying them out if you have the time. Spend about 5-7 days with each launcher and figure out which suits your needs the best. My setup was always Virtuous G-Lite with GOLauncherEX and it worked out perfectly for me. Insane battery life (talking 3 days on a single charge with moderate use with the stock battery) and great speed (no lockups or lag).
Good luck!
Thanks for reply guys. I am still checking thing out. I want to do some good couple of days testing witch each rom.
Right now i am ditching cm7 ilwt350. Its kinda glitchy. Especially screen not rotating or only half of screen rotating etc.

I agree.
I do not always eat gingerbread, but when I do, I prefer ADW Ex.

ICS and GoLauncher EX

I have been using Go Launcher EX almost as long as I've had my phone, running it on the Gingerbread ROM (stock).
I'm still using Go Launcher EX since upgrading to the stock ICS rom. I'm not happy with performance and numerous other things, but I'm troubleshooting that independently. Just wiped my Dalvik cache, and ran Fix Permissions. Could be just update bugs everyone is experiencing.
However, I'm noticing something that's made me wonder...
On GB threads going back even to my prior phone, lots of people were using Go Launcher.
On ICS threads... I haven't seen mentions of ANYONE using Go Launcher. Seems like Nova Launcher and Apex launcher are the two big ones named... which oddly seem stripped compared to Go Launcher.
What's the deal? Are there known issues running Go Launcher on ICS? Why else would there seem to be a sudden abandonment of it on ICS?

No, it just seems a lot of folks enjoy something closer to the "pure" ICS experience. I couldn't be tempted...love Go Launcher. Plus we still have scrolling wallpaper...
Nova and Apex will only work on 4.0. They are designed to look like ics and have some of the same transition, effects and what not. That's what I noticed at least.
The stock theme for GO is clean but it isn't going to be confused with ICS and everyone wants the latest and greatest.
I'm personally not impressed by apex or nova because in order to experiment with themes, options, or effects, I have to start with my wallet. I would like access to some of the goodies to see what it can do, and what the themes really look like before I start squandering my lunch money.
I'm using Go launcher + , with no problems, I'm on the latest ICS update..:good:
I used it exclusively until more recently when I made what I think is an awesome setup in ss launcher.

Go launcher seems fat and bloated compared to the other options for ICS. There were very few good GB launchers so Go was more popular.
I agree go launcher has a heavy feel to it. And it wasn't friendly to my battery at all.. I use apex and it has been more battery friendly and light... Go launcher is nice but they need to strip some stuff from it

I'd like to recommend mihome miui home launcher 4.0
if you are on a gingerbread rom you could always use hollo launcher, just like apex, nova launcher but for gingerbread!
When i was running on ics, i tried noca and apex but ended up going back to go launcher. I love the way of its customizations and it works plenty fast for me.

With Jellybean, do we even need a custom launcher?

So since the upgrade to jellybean I have continued to use Apex since I was used to it from ICS. However, today I started using the stock JB launcher and find it more smooth and fast than apex. I wonder if the new launcher is even faster due to the project butter enhancements.
so my question is this, Do we even need a custom launcher anymore?
assuming I dont care about the bells and whistles of gestures, grid size and whatnot. I just want a fast launcher without redraws.
need? no. It is about having options and that is one of the best things of android. You may not have a desire for it, but plenty of others use custom launchers. I personally like having more control that apex allows me.

i totally agree with you, there are many other things i do on android to customize. but extra launcher features is not a desire for me, but speed and fluidity is. i was just wondering what others thought about the new speed of the JB launcher, is it as good as the customs?
I aks this becuase on ICS I always found the APEX faster than stock ICS so i used it.

I would use the stock launcher if I could use custom icons.
Sent from my AOSP Android 4.1.1 Galaxy Nexus.
Use Nova, its the tits
Sent from my Nexus 7
I would use stock, if I could hide icons, reduce amount of homescreens and "untie" the app and widget section in the app drawer
Personally I hate the Google search bar, no way to dump it without a launcher.
I also love the Homescreen in landscape, again, not an option with stock.
Holo launcher is light and smooth.

that's great, then this thread is for discussion. then why it's on Q&A? "do we need a custom launcher?" - maybe you should have made this a poll to see which is the "best" launcher. in general.
and we're not bashing nor trolling, we're saying that these threads are all over these forums.

Aren't Apex / Nova launches simply forks of the stock launcher with the developers added features / options? I'd be really surprised if they were all not sharing much of the exact same code.
I use them b/c I like to hide apps from the app drawer, lock my desktop, have unread counts and separate my apps into groups in the drawer and I don't think I can do that just yet with stock.
just flash the newest CNA Rom its the sheeeyat so much customization wit the launcher and everything else with great possibility to change dpi
Until the JB launcher can rotate the homescreen, yes you're going to need a new launcher. Can't believe that feature made it past google.

[Q] Your impressions on alternative launcher and dialer

I've used Go Launcher when I was running CM7 (and of course the default ADW). Go was slick, but seemed to be a bit of a battery drain. I recently installed JellyTime ROM and tried the default launchers installed (Trebuchet and Nova) Treb is very basic, Nova isn't bad. I am now using Apex. So far I like it and it seems to work pretty well.

Prefer SS launcher, really another way to present your desktop, it wipe out the limitation of m x n icons desktop. Instead it uses layer as desktop.
spb shell is good its has 3d effects
Depends on what version of Android you have. I like Holo & Apex launcher for 4.0.x and up. For Android 2.3.x I use miuihome/miui launcher or GoLauncher. If you like effects, you can go with spbShell 3D launcher. It's nice for the futuristic and 3D feel, but it lacks in other key features that other launchers have. If you are unsure, YouTube has a video of practically every app or launcher out there. Check them out before you make a purchase you might regret. I hope this helps you or someone out.
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4g
For ics I prefer the touchwiz launcher. You have to flash a zip to make it work right, but its the smoothest launcher I've ever used.
Following that for jb I prefer atom launcher, followed by apex. Atom is decently smooth, and has tons of eye candy.
If I'm on gb I like either adw or go. Adw is fast and light, and looks okay. Plus it let's me theme my phone to look like the nexus s. Go is slightly heavier(not an issue on our device usually) but it has the most features for any launcher you can think of.
I like miui v4, but it lacks certain features I find important (organize folder contents by name)
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using xda app-developers app
I use Moto Razr M launcher, or xperia launcher. They both seem to do well for me...
Nova launcher rocks Super smooth for me so far.
