[Debate]What rom and why? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright.. so we all probably use virtuous rom, gingervillian, cyanogen or miui.
I wanna know why everyone chooses each one.. I've flashed all and am just curious to why everyone else chooses the roms they do.. what really makes you stay with the rom you have??
I run miui. To me cyanogen lacks full customization. And has no benefitial features over miui. I get same battery life and phone runs smoothly at 1ghz as it would on any other rom. ONLY issue is random reboots. Which is a theme issue not a rom issue.. And I don't care for sense roms.. to me they slow the phone down.. although I am waiting for cm7 to become stable before my first flash.
Sent from my G2.

Currently I am running MIUI. I'm still getting used to it but overall I like it. I love the UI. It looks clean and it's quick.

Stock post ota deodexed.... because every other rom gives me some sort of problem that there is no guide to fixing and I don't have the time to troubleshoot the bull****

Whats deodexed mean??

The 1.2Ghz clock speed from the God speed thread.
Anything higher than that affects my battery and I don't see any obvious benefit as I don't play any games that need a higher CPU.

virtuous because of eye candy and htc streams are awesome!!

which rom saves battery most?

I use CM6.1.1
I previously tried Virtuous because I always wanted a Sense phone but realized Sense actually sucks, well the messaging, gallery and dialer at least.
I use my phone heavily for A2DP bluetooth streaming and apperantly cyanogenmod is pretty much the best rom for bluetooth audio quality, also the added equalizer feature is awesome. Its just like the stock rom whish I loved since my nexus days but with just the right amount of customization.
MIUI looks annoying as hell, why not just buy an iDevice if your into that UI?

When you install an app, sometimes it comes with an odex file (i believe it's an extension of some sort to the app) When you are de-odex'd, it merges the extension (dot odex file) with the apk. The only reason I wanted this rom was to use themes for stock roms. I also found that it boots the phone up a hell of a lot faster.
Highly recommended for people who want the stock feel but like small mods here and there.

That's not a rom...
that's a kernel........... *facepalm*

I run Virtuous for a few reasons:
1. camera - the stock Android camera app is abysmal. Few options and not easy to use in the least.
2. music player - genre support is a big one for me
3. Sense - I use LauncherPro, but I prefer the sense contacts and other features.
4. I installed the 3D gallery from stock, so I have access to both. One other small benefit of the otherwise useless Sense gallery is a scrollable 'share' pop-up. On stock ROMs (or CM), if you have too many options in this menu, you can't scroll so you can't access them. Sense lets you scroll the 'share' list.

Not everything about miui is iphonish... and even the parts that are you have options.. the menus? I turn those to the standard grid. the icons? Not all are uniformed "squares" all thou the theme is use they are. But I actually am I fan of uniformed icons. I think it looks cleaner.. imho. What about miui looks annoying?? I admit the original launcher is lame. But I don't use it.. I think docks and notification bars are lame. I don't use either and rock adw.. swipe down for notifications and up for apps. plus you can't tell me miui lock screen isn't sexy..

[Q] What do you prefer Sense or None Sense?

Just wondering what people's opinions are with regards to their selected ROMS - Please Vote and state why
Sense because the user interface is so much better than non sense roms in my personal opinion. It seems to give a much better look and feel to the usage of the phone.

Couldn't Vote.
Usability or Beauty.
Sense has things like teh beauty, the camera app, Rosie (which i never use), friend-stream, all of which are pretty great, and amazing usability.
while Android has the openness, the speed and stability, and allows you to do more things, but things can get ugly, like the borders of contact pictures, the camera app, and OJ death while it was an issue.
I find myself switching from OD to AuraxTSense and back about 3 times daily, because the camera can't take the pictures as sharp as I like, or because the sense is very bloaty and takes up half the screen on things like messages (reasons for today, tomorrow i think it's the theming for OD vs SYSRW in AuraxTSense)
The pros and cons of each are what is going to kill me. Can't wait for the new sense, and have realised I'm on a 16month plan so no instant Desire HD for me :'(
Which?
Hi
For me it's with Sense. The integration into Android is getting better since the early Windows Mobile days.
As long as Sense + the phone's operating system doesn't end up becoming so bloated that it brings about lag and problems (in an underpowered phone) then it will continue to be useful - in my eyes.
Cheers
Aussie
Non sense makes sense for me
i began with the nexus one using cyanogen and it was VERY fast. Sense however, seems to give it that certain polish giving a premium feel. Also, i have yet to see a more fluid flipping between homescreens than sense.
I'm on no sense now because many sense apps I don't use and no sense feels sharper.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
i'm staying with Sense cuz of camera and dialer app. Those 2 are the only reason. if CM got them i would gladly switch to it immediately.
I tried CM and OD and i love them both, cuz the devs and designers are using them a lot. and i want the REVOLution theme on my Sense-Desire!!! and they are on CM only~~
Sense. If I didn't want the Sense UI, why would I have purchased a HTC Desire? I could have gone for a Nexus One or... the Galaxy S
No sense for me cause it takes up extra ram and I don't like the black bubble browser menu and complexity of the UI as well as the lack of 3D effect like the launcher2 has. The simplicity of the AOSP nexus one like ROMS help work flow for me. After the new Desire HD rom is ported and provides better functionality, I may consider swapping
Again why is this in the dev section? And not general?
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Am I the only one using sence because of speed? I love launcherpro, but on every vanilla ROM I have been using, launcherpro has been extremely laggy. Even if all benchmarks tell me the phone is faster, it still feels terribly slow. MoDaCo to me feels so much quicker.

Sense is good in a sense that it makes the whole android UI more easy to use, more manageable, and makes the whole thing more beautiful. People always tend to put different themes on their phone to make it as their own custom look and feel. So for me I like sense... either that or install launcher and download your own preferred theme right? I guess it all goes down to personal preference.

Without Sense ... sense is slow
For easy klicking and social networks and so on its fine perhaps ... but i never need it ... so no need for sense. The Clock with weather is fine ... so i use Fency. For Calendar ... Purewidgets ... 3 Widgets replace the hole sense for me so enjoy the speed.

I have two Desires which I regularly swap between - one is running CyanogenMod and the other MoDaCo's MCR8 Sense ROM.
I'm sure that in benchmarks CyanogendMod is "faster" but in my experience, in real world usage, there is no difference.
Actually, there is one difference - CyanogenMod is way *slower* when copying files to/from the devices in USB storage mode.

As much as I love Sense UI, I'd rather have it optional, with a possibility to add/remove the components.

Ditto. Thus I ditched Sense altogether. I didn't use more than half of the components of sense. most frustrating is that it doesn't completely replace the base process, just runs on top of it consuming resources.
I posted this on the CM thread but i might as well ask you guys.
A question to a sense user switching to CM/Stock rom, how do you live without htc camera and htc phone dialer?
i mean for those that bought their Desire or starting to use their phone with sense without knowing a vanilla UI exist(like me). i just felt somethings missing without the htc camera and dialer. I've flashed OD/CM a couple of times but returning back to Sense cuz of that. Otherwise i would stay on CM, it is such a good rom.
I'm buying a Cybershot Digital camera but thats not so soon so i would like to have a decent camera app before that. i mean, the resolution is not wide as htc camera when taking pictures. and if i wanted a wide one i need to lower the resolution to 4.5mp? or is there any trick to that? cuz everytime i capture a pic, i'll get this right and left bar beside the pic using the 5mp resolution.
as for dialer, dialer one doesnt feel quite right to replace the htc dialer, though i may accept it sooner or later if i got my digital camera after this.
Just wanted an opinion for a Sense starter, not from pure stock rom user cuz you know vanilla UI from the start so you dont know how i feel. but you may post your opinion as well.
last question, can someone give a thought bout the 720p video recording? is it good, or better than sense's 720p?
and does this support A2SD+,i mean in this CM6, cuz CM6 RC2 doesnt have this yet and i'm on OD cuz of this actually. i want A2SD+ cuz i cant live without it...
I'm on Modaco R8 self baked ROM btw.
Thanks!

[Q] Is there any sense in using Sense? =]

I mean, what will I lose if I choose to use a rom without sense?
Do I get less battery drain?
you'll lose:
Sense Launcher, Sense Widgets - this can be fully replaced by Launcher Plus Pro, or, if you don't like the look of Sense Widgets by ADW.Launcher
Sense programs, like mail, calendar, ...
FM Radio
HTC Sync - you won't be able to sync your Desire calendar with Outlook directly any longer. You'll have to buy third party software to do this via the Google cloud or you use an Exchange Server.
Because the HTC Froyo source got released now, as it seems, you'll also be able to undervolt Sense ROMs now.
However, non Sense ROMs are lighter, more customized and contain some essential features which I miss on Sense ROMs: Bluetooth HID support.
Why get rid of sense?, its amazing!!!
you will also loose htc dialer and htc contacts
I love sense because of the widgets I keep it for that.

Agreed. I love everything about sense. It makes the phone great. If I wanted senseless I could have bought an N1.
Sense is the reason desire is the best smart phone! I would not dream having a smartphone without it...

Sense is very nice but I see that there are many roms that don't contain it. So, I was wondering if it realy is neasecery, or what is better in a non-sense rom, and if a non-sense rom is less hungry for battery
I have two Desires - one has a Sense ROM and the other is running CyanogenMod. There are one or two small things I prefer about the CyanogenMod ROM, but a great deal more I prefer about Sense, but there are others on this forum who will tell you the opposite, and be equally correct because it is just an opinion.
One thing I will say though is that you will often hear that non-Sense ROMs are "faster" than Sense ROMs. In my experience, if there is a speed difference, you can only really tell in benchmarks - in general use I feel my Sense phone is every bit as fast as my CyanogenMod phone. The same is true on battery life - both seem to sip about the same amount of power.
I don't think there is any real alternative other than trying out a non-Sense ROM for yourself and making your own choice.
Regards,
Dave
You can undervolt Sense roms of course. Also now with S-Off you can remove the Sense apps you dont need easily from the phone.
After playing with a non-Sense rom I am back to a Sense one mainly because I cold not live with the battery drain and I can now customize the Sense apps.
On Alex 1.7 and with light use I can almost go 3 days on a battery... with a non-Sense rom I could barely make 24-36h (wipe before flash and few apps installed, no sync), so it's clear in my case which rom type drains more battery.
Also this Alex 1.7 Sense rom is smooth as silk and I never get any apps or the whole phone crashing (daily occurence in aosp rom for many people?).
Aosp roms are great if you like messing around with your phone all the time, but you cant get away with the fact that Sense roms just work.
Respect to all the rom makers Sense or non.Sense.
Thanks for all the responses, you helped a lot =]

Mhh, something wasn't working properly then. With very light use I can also get 3 days battery life.
Else it's difficult to compare, because it heavily depends on how you use the phone. Playing around, surfing, ... drastically reduces battery life.
However, at the moment I use DeFroST 5.0 with HAVS kernel and the battery life looks perfect to me.

Somehow true, sometimes, but sense roms also have bugs often, and a not working revision, which gets fixed in the next release.
So if you want a stable ROM use the stock. If you want some customization, use a custom sense rom. If you don't use sense features, replaced it with other apps/widgets/tools, and need some AOSP rom features, then get an AOSP rom.
i dont have a Desire atm, but i plan on getting one soon (or possibly the DHD). I like sense, especially the new one which allows you to theme it. But something i've noticed with sense compared to stock is that HTC have removed a lot of animations. Like when opening an app or closing it. It instantly opens or closes with no animation. Stock android has a sort of zoom in zoom out animations.
From what i understand, HTC have set the options to "Some animations" in the settings by default. Could someone here go into Settings, Sound and Display, Animations, and set it to All Animations and report here if they see any changes?
htc contacts, gallery , dialer , camera and video , radio, weather ,friendstream are light years and galaxies far away from the aosp android ones...

[Q] What would you like the Chefs to make??

As a developer myself, just no in the tech field, I find it helpful to know what other want so that I can produce the best. I'm sure that most of you do this because it's something that YOU personally want and or like. I deeply appreciate the work that has gone into such wonderful ROM's and I can't wait to see more.
As for me, I've tried out RR, CM, SR, Frank, Jager, ASOP, and a few other odds and ends.
It seems to me there should be a blend. A blend between Sense and well....nonsense.
Currently, I'm on the Ultimate ASOP. This ROM has been amazing because of the ability to customize. Like every ROM, there are quirks or just small things that bother me, but it's SOOOO close to greatness, IMHO. I like a lot about a lot of ROMS but if they're lacking Sense then I miss that. If they have Sense, I miss the customizing of the Non Sense. My question is, can the two be made to be CommonSense?
What I'm talking about is a ROM that combines a little bit of the HTC Sense side with the applications and setting and customization of the Non HTC Sense ROMs. For instance, the email application in the Driod root IMHO opinion is much better then the Sense one. You can easily check multiple emails and the default background is back. What if you could have Sense, but change the lock screen to something different and be able to add different themes easily? There are several instances where the two could be combined to make CommonSense. And, if you have some ideas please share!
I guess i'm just looking for ideas from others that I can take a pitch to a Chef along with a few $$$ to make a ROM that'll do just that. Is there anyone else that thinks the same or I am the only one riding the HellaNoSense boat?
check out IncDoes AOSP. but you should have posted in q/a or general for future reference

The look & feel of the new Sense UI (The Desire Z ROM specifically), the fastest and most optimized speed possible, working camera w/ 720p video (only thing wrong with Desire Z ROM, imo), lots of free memory, clear of all the bloatware apps, aaaaaaaaaaaaand.... My perfect rom would be:
Sense based Vanilla rom
htc keyboard
htc camera
htc gallery
htc contacts
either HTC facebook or contacts syncable with market facebook.
emmc working properly
adw built in
customizations avalable in cyanogen's latest rom
power widget built in to notification pull down.
figure out how to change the answer/silence to tabs
reboot option in power menu
6 signal bars
htc battery icon with %
keep the colored sense settings menu icons.
tab or rotary music controls (hidden when not in use)
thats all i can think of.
Having tried just about every ROM out there (and a couple of them a number of times) I think the problem I run into is there are little things here and there that I like about each.
All of our tastes are different, thus we like different things. Some people like the circle battery mod, some people like the rotary lock screen, etc etc...
What would be really cool is if there were a way to easily choose the specific mods you wanted... kinda like picking out options on a new car.
Ultimately, I think the answer is a dev that is willing to build you a custom ROM to your exact specifications. Of course, this would come with a price tag, but hey, it's exactly what you wanted (and it would be worth it IMO... any takers LOL).
In the meantime, I'm trying to figure out how to get what it is that I want and experiment. It's been fun, frustrating at times, and I still don't have everything I like, but at least we have lots of options to choose from, and I'm learning something new in the process
Is it not possible to build a Rom with a bunch of on off switches that allow you to select sense or no sense , or give you the option for circle battery vs stock ....
IMO.... this would be the ULTIMATE Rom .....

@ The OP: Maybe you should initiate a poll.

Memory/Speed issue.

OK so i was originally on a Deodexed Stock Rom with no mods or anything like that other than it was Deodexed.
My phone was blazing fast then, and still is IF i flash back to that rom. IM now running the latest Virtuous Sense Rom. Heres my issue. I use advanced task killer which displays the available memory after you kill the apps.
On the stock deodexed Rom after killing apps i had around 375M of available memory. Now that i'm on sense, i get about 81 on average, and after killing some services i can get up to 120 max, but thats it.
Is there any way i can get it back up in the 300 range? I want my phone to be fast (Who doesnt) but i REALLYY dont want to have to revert back to stock in order to do that.
I assume you have a Desire Z because if you have a G2 then you're comparing apples to oranges.
I know the .odex is sort of a preloaded portion of the app or something along those lines (it's been awhile). So my guess it that instead of part of the app being contained in the .odex file contained in /system it's loaded into the RAM instead on a deodexed ROM. That would be why you have less RAM.
I could just be talking out of my a$$ though since it's been a long time since I've cared to read about odex vs deodex. It was a pretty big argument back in the day over which was faster.
I actually have a g2 by tmobile. What do u mean im comparing apples to oranges though?
Sense sucks your phone's resources into a black hole.
It's pretty and has a number of attractive features over Vanilla Android (nice dialler, consistent copy/paste features, nice browser), and I used to love it. But like you, I got annoyed at the phone constantly reloading apps (and browser pages) when I went back to them because of low RAM. Eventually I grew to love Vanilla (well, CM-based) ROMs. Just wipe that Sense off and see an instant performance improvement!
Really i love sense for the dialer/contacts. if i could find a rom with a smart dialer like sense AND the option to text a number thru the dialer unlike vanilla android id go back in a flash. but i havent found that yet =/

Because the stock G2 is *almost* a vanilla ROM (aosp), not Sense. Look at the size of a Sense ROM download, then compare that to the size of a Cyanogen ROM. Still wonder why Sense ROMs have less available? They are a whole different item. It's like comparing a bike to a car.
Overclock it! I always OC sense tons. If you did already and still not happy with the speed then you will need to ditch sense.

Hey guys,
So I'm getting a little impatient with waiting for Gingerbread on my DHD and was thinking of going to CM7 now that its Final. Previous Custom ROMS so far havn't really done it for me. I kinda like the reliablility and battery life etc of the stock build.
Has anyone tried CM7 on the DHD who could maybe give a little account of how it worked out (battery life etc)?

Battery life is superb on CM7 and much better than the Gingerbread Sense ROMs. I take it you have tried the latest Desire S builds? I recommend RCMix if you haven't. If you are wanting the pure Google experience though, you have nothing to fear with CM7.
Regards.
Stock rom offers a better connection between all the social networks, better stock widgets and htc sense camera app. hmmm i did have CM7 for while and i loved it but its just the camera app that did it for me, i guess im just too used to HTC sense !
I had no problems with CM7 either. Very nice rom. Camera App is nice. Audio is great. Having or not having HTC Sense is a big decision maker. Once or if you get bored of Sense, then you will really enjoy a rom like CM7 for all its other differences. If it could have the Sense Weather animations and clock, Touch Input keyboard and HTC Reader 2.0 - it could be my ideal rom at this point.
Although I'm a relative noob with trying the many Android roms.

The clock, albeit not with the flip function, can be found all over the internet. Search for Fancy Widget (Sense Clock) to find it. If you can't and desperately need it, I will pm you the apk upon request, although will have to dig it out first. Keyboard? I'm confused as to exactly what you mean, but you can use the HTC keyboard on CM7 as well as numerous other replacements. HTC Reader??!! No way! Aldiko and Laputa both make HTC's attempt look poor. Not to mention Kindle.
Personally, the slight nuances of pure Android are what I find hard to resist. The transition animations, which were present on the Donut Sense UI but inexplicably left out since 2.1, are a big one. I know you can find ROMs which include the different animations or use Launcher Pro, but they never operate 100% and stutter/glitch at random moments. Even the way the keyboard bounces onto the screen rather than just "appearing" gives a more polished feel. The clean simple UI, which lacks the clutter and plethora of menu's that Sense incorporates is a dream to navigate, and the overall speed of the OS is unrivalled. I guess for the "average user", Sense is a comfortable, intuitive blanket which makes Android accessible for the masses. In the Windows Mobile days and arguably when Cupcake/Donut were still in use, it was a necessity. Since 2.1 however, I feel it is no longer needed as the Android UI has evolved to a point where it should appeal to anyone.

EDIT: Just seen your website Grant! Forgive the app recommendations, I see you are already well versed in alternatives.
Thanks guys!!
Im still not sure! I wasn't the interface i was worried about! I've given the customs a whirl and its been more the reliability and performance that have brought me back to the stock ROM. I've downloaded the CM7 zip! might give it a chance over the weekend before the week starts over! Ill always have my back-up for when HTC decide to give us an official release of 2.3.3.
Maybe ill never go back once i try CM7!
cheers
if your a gameloft gamer, i suggest sticking with a sense 2.2 rom. if your a audiophile, cm7.
So using it now! Love the look and feel except I find that its a big sticky when swiping between homescreens. Any suggestions?

Try a different launcher. Launcher Pro is one of the smoothest.
Regards.
The Regina 3D Launcher is one I've only just heard of - thanks to Pocketnow.com.
For anyone who hasn't tried CyanogenMod 7 - there are some screenshots here.
I've only tried 3 Roms so far on Android. It would be nice to have an ongoing poll based on member's records or vote or something to see which ones are the most popular.

One thing I found missing is the ability to hide certain albums within the gallery. A nice feature when you've lots of crap on you SD card! Also having the GPS issue that seems pretty widespread.
Other than that, battery life = more awesome than Stock!
