I have been using Go Launcher EX almost as long as I've had my phone, running it on the Gingerbread ROM (stock).
I'm still using Go Launcher EX since upgrading to the stock ICS rom. I'm not happy with performance and numerous other things, but I'm troubleshooting that independently. Just wiped my Dalvik cache, and ran Fix Permissions. Could be just update bugs everyone is experiencing.
However, I'm noticing something that's made me wonder...
On GB threads going back even to my prior phone, lots of people were using Go Launcher.
On ICS threads... I haven't seen mentions of ANYONE using Go Launcher. Seems like Nova Launcher and Apex launcher are the two big ones named... which oddly seem stripped compared to Go Launcher.
What's the deal? Are there known issues running Go Launcher on ICS? Why else would there seem to be a sudden abandonment of it on ICS?

No, it just seems a lot of folks enjoy something closer to the "pure" ICS experience. I couldn't be tempted...love Go Launcher. Plus we still have scrolling wallpaper...
Nova and Apex will only work on 4.0. They are designed to look like ics and have some of the same transition, effects and what not. That's what I noticed at least.
The stock theme for GO is clean but it isn't going to be confused with ICS and everyone wants the latest and greatest.
I'm personally not impressed by apex or nova because in order to experiment with themes, options, or effects, I have to start with my wallet. I would like access to some of the goodies to see what it can do, and what the themes really look like before I start squandering my lunch money.
I'm using Go launcher + , with no problems, I'm on the latest ICS update..:good:
I used it exclusively until more recently when I made what I think is an awesome setup in ss launcher.

Go launcher seems fat and bloated compared to the other options for ICS. There were very few good GB launchers so Go was more popular.
I agree go launcher has a heavy feel to it. And it wasn't friendly to my battery at all.. I use apex and it has been more battery friendly and light... Go launcher is nice but they need to strip some stuff from it

I'd like to recommend mihome miui home launcher 4.0
if you are on a gingerbread rom you could always use hollo launcher, just like apex, nova launcher but for gingerbread!
When i was running on ics, i tried noca and apex but ended up going back to go launcher. I love the way of its customizations and it works plenty fast for me.

Running CM7RC1 and it seems like Launcher Pro is waaaaay more smooth in terms of screen transitions than the ADW Launcher that comes with the ROM.
Anyone else notice this?

yes. I was a fan of ADW up until I had a friend show me his phone with the same CM7 nightly and launcher pro. I haven't used ADW since.
I think it's hit or miss, but a lot of people have been having issues with LP being really sluggish on CM7. It worked fine for me when I used it and I actually like it better, but since I'm flashing and wiping so often, I won't bother setting it up until a stable release.

You can backup your launcher pro settings, to include home screen, you just have to re-add the widgets.
1. how do I find out which touchwiz version my phone is running?

my phone is running the stock +root el26.

Well, for the 1st exactly how to verify which TW you are running the 3.* got some dots on top of your screen & the TW 4.* got the same dots down on the screen.
On your 2nd question, I've seen that a lot of roms uses ADW Launcher, LauncherPro & Go Launcher EX. (I came from the Original Epic 4G and actually have a Epic 4G Touch which haven't root yet ironically, but soon!) >)!
I hope my little knowledge on it can help you out, =!

Launcher Pro... However, seems like people have recently been having issues do to lack of development. Go Launcher is my next pick, fully customizable to your liking... Either one in my opinion outshines the stock TW Launcher.
As the 3.0 kernel gets better and better everyday, I can't hold myself to switch to ICS but I'm really undecided about which launcher suits best for a ICS loaded Kindle Fire.
I narrowed down my choices to the following 4:
Nova
Apex
Trebuchet
Go Launcher HD
So which do you think is the most preferable in terms of customization options and tablet specific features?
Well.. I like Apex, lots of customization, snappy, stable..
Or maybe I'm just used to it.

Go Launcher HD has the most features, but lots of lag compared to Apex.
I would choose Apex

Go Lancher HD
I have been using the Go Launcher HD, mostly because it is what I am used to using (i.e. Go Launcher Ex.) The HD launcher came installed with the first ROM I used, and since it was familiar, I tried it out for a bit, but it is no where near as customizable as the Ex flavor. I then switched back to the Ex flavor, but found it less suited to the Tablet Form Factor than its HD cousin. I then tried both the Apex and Nova launchers, but ultimately went back to Go Launcher HD because of my previous experience with Ex. Since I have been using HD, they have been adding customizability but it is no where near Ex.
IMHO therefore, HD familiar if previous Ex user, Apex or Nova for customizability.
Thanks for listening,
Sincerely,
William

I use Apex launcher. It has more features than Nova and Trebuchet and personally looks better than Go Launcher HD. It really depends on what you want though. Do you want lots of features? Yes? Then go with Go Launcher. No? Then go with Apex.

I want full customization from widget sizes to gestures and if I'm highly satisfied with it, I'm also ready to buy the premium versions.
Is your kindle rooted? Currently i am using the Hellfire ICS rom which comes stock with Nova and Tresbuchet. Very stable, lightweight system which i am very pleased with. I am also using the Hackers keyboard which is customisable. All the info i got was from watching tutorials on you tube and many thanks to XDA for the links they provide.

Kindle Fire launcher on ICS?
Speaking of launchers, is it possible to run (or sideload) the original Kindle Fire launcher on ICS?
I've got the hard part done: my Fire is running Android 4.0.4 (CM9 - gedeROM v1.25, with the Apex launcher). All is good, but I want to add Amazon's Kindle Fire launcher as an option (ok, call me perverse!)
I'm guessing that the answer is "no", likely because the fire launcher was written specifically for Android 2.3. But perhaps this is wrong, and one of you can illuminate me on how to do this? Thanks!
I have Apex to be the fastest and with good customization options.
Too much widgets would affect battery life. I think it's better to stick with Trebuchet or Apex.

While u already have the Trebuchet Launcher bundled with CM9, i would recommend trying out NOVA Launcher Prime
its similar to the free version, but better in many ways..
such as :
Folders in App Drawer
Unlimited custom tabs
Organize apps into tabs and folders in the app drawer
+1 for Nova Launcher Prime, smooth and speedy
I moved from Go Launcher to Apex.
Apex is snappy.
As some one already said, Widgets drain battery, I use it minimum.
ICS is defiately slow in KF, so Apex Launcher is the best. Snappy yet costumizable.
Bad thing, if you're used to GO Launcher (my preference in GB), then you are gonna miss Go widgets.
So since the upgrade to jellybean I have continued to use Apex since I was used to it from ICS. However, today I started using the stock JB launcher and find it more smooth and fast than apex. I wonder if the new launcher is even faster due to the project butter enhancements.
so my question is this, Do we even need a custom launcher anymore?
assuming I dont care about the bells and whistles of gestures, grid size and whatnot. I just want a fast launcher without redraws.
need? no. It is about having options and that is one of the best things of android. You may not have a desire for it, but plenty of others use custom launchers. I personally like having more control that apex allows me.

i totally agree with you, there are many other things i do on android to customize. but extra launcher features is not a desire for me, but speed and fluidity is. i was just wondering what others thought about the new speed of the JB launcher, is it as good as the customs?
I aks this becuase on ICS I always found the APEX faster than stock ICS so i used it.

I would use the stock launcher if I could use custom icons.
Sent from my AOSP Android 4.1.1 Galaxy Nexus.
Use Nova, its the tits

I would use stock, if I could hide icons, reduce amount of homescreens and "untie" the app and widget section in the app drawer
Personally I hate the Google search bar, no way to dump it without a launcher.
I also love the Homescreen in landscape, again, not an option with stock.
Holo launcher is light and smooth.

thanks for all your inputs keep it coming. For the trolls at the top. you dont have to bash the thread. Im not asking for advice, I am happy with either stock or Apex. i was making an observation and I wanted others' opinions.

that's great, then this thread is for discussion. then why it's on Q&A? "do we need a custom launcher?" - maybe you should have made this a poll to see which is the "best" launcher. in general.
and we're not bashing nor trolling, we're saying that these threads are all over these forums.

Aren't Apex / Nova launches simply forks of the stock launcher with the developers added features / options? I'd be really surprised if they were all not sharing much of the exact same code.
I use them b/c I like to hide apps from the app drawer, lock my desktop, have unread counts and separate my apps into groups in the drawer and I don't think I can do that just yet with stock.
just flash the newest CNA Rom its the sheeeyat so much customization wit the launcher and everything else with great possibility to change dpi
Until the JB launcher can rotate the homescreen, yes you're going to need a new launcher. Can't believe that feature made it past google.
Works with standard ics roms not just asop or cm9 , flash zip in recovery , let me know if it works for you as it did for me
Pretty nice launcher ,but on cm9 beta 1 most of the apps on my sd card are not showing up in the app drawer. Seems to be a common problem with most TW ports anyways. Still a nice port. Hopefully will be fixed soon.

I find it hard to believe that people would go through so much trouble to port bloated launcher. Am I missing something. I couldn't use TW for more than 30 minutes. I always used custom ROMs and launchers.
IMHO Nova Prime launcher beats any launcher ever made.

i use apex launcher and like it. I wanted to do some testing on the TW launcher. its smoother than nova and apex imo. But hey its nice for anyone who likes TW.
will this work for stock ics rooted xperia s?
