With Jellybean, do we even need a custom launcher? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So since the upgrade to jellybean I have continued to use Apex since I was used to it from ICS. However, today I started using the stock JB launcher and find it more smooth and fast than apex. I wonder if the new launcher is even faster due to the project butter enhancements.
so my question is this, Do we even need a custom launcher anymore?
assuming I dont care about the bells and whistles of gestures, grid size and whatnot. I just want a fast launcher without redraws.

need? no. It is about having options and that is one of the best things of android. You may not have a desire for it, but plenty of others use custom launchers. I personally like having more control that apex allows me.

i totally agree with you, there are many other things i do on android to customize. but extra launcher features is not a desire for me, but speed and fluidity is. i was just wondering what others thought about the new speed of the JB launcher, is it as good as the customs?
I aks this becuase on ICS I always found the APEX faster than stock ICS so i used it.

I would use the stock launcher if I could use custom icons.
Sent from my AOSP Android 4.1.1 Galaxy Nexus.

Use Nova, its the tits
Sent from my Nexus 7

I would use stock, if I could hide icons, reduce amount of homescreens and "untie" the app and widget section in the app drawer

Personally I hate the Google search bar, no way to dump it without a launcher.
I also love the Homescreen in landscape, again, not an option with stock.

Holo launcher is light and smooth.

thanks for all your inputs keep it coming. For the trolls at the top. you dont have to bash the thread. Im not asking for advice, I am happy with either stock or Apex. i was making an observation and I wanted others' opinions.

that's great, then this thread is for discussion. then why it's on Q&A? "do we need a custom launcher?" - maybe you should have made this a poll to see which is the "best" launcher. in general.
and we're not bashing nor trolling, we're saying that these threads are all over these forums.

Aren't Apex / Nova launches simply forks of the stock launcher with the developers added features / options? I'd be really surprised if they were all not sharing much of the exact same code.
I use them b/c I like to hide apps from the app drawer, lock my desktop, have unread counts and separate my apps into groups in the drawer and I don't think I can do that just yet with stock.

just flash the newest CNA Rom its the sheeeyat so much customization wit the launcher and everything else with great possibility to change dpi

Until the JB launcher can rotate the homescreen, yes you're going to need a new launcher. Can't believe that feature made it past google.

[req] samsung touchwiz 3.0 UI

not sure if its even possible, or maybe not yet. but with 2 galaxy s phones being out i was wondering if its possible to get a touchwiz 3.0 ui instead of sense. I actually really like the layout and design and all the little tweaks it has. Is it possible to get a complete port of the ui to the evo?
It's possible in the context of "anything is possible" but I would bet my money on it never happening.
If TouchWiz is anything like sense, it's integrated into numerous parts of the Android OS all over the place. TouchWiz is also proprietary to Samsung, like Sense is to HTC. In other words, there isn't source code for developers to "port" from. This would be a large task even if source code was available.
IMHO I would rather see someone's time spent either helping others find solutions that meet your needs that are already available or implementing an open source solution that would work on more than just the EVO.
Just my 0.02c feel free to correct me on whatever.
yeah thats what i thought :/ i just love the bottom down, style of icons, and all the menu styles
Interesting. I though most people hated/disliked TouchWiz.
It's definitely not the prettiest interface out there, but it does its job. If you like it build it, but as for me, I'll stick with vanilla Android.
Although a community based UI (above just a new launcher) that incorporated some of the features out there like weather, social networks, etc. would definitely be a welcome change, as it could be streamlined for speed optimizations.
Just my $.02.

If a dev could find a dump and port it over, that's essentially what ava did with his froyo sense rom.

well i posted a thread here, since realizing a whole rom for that ui might be to much, maybe just asking for the launcher. i know the touchwiz launcher apk works on the evo, but none of the widgets load.
is it possible to replace the launcher on my dc rom with the touchwiz one?

Maybe this is a great opportunity for you to get involved with the community and start learning about how this stuff works.
Looks like the stock ROM for the Galaxy S can be obtained here (the Vibrant)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728698
You could always start taking it apart and try to isolate the TouchWiz components and "bake" them into your own Android ROM.
Looks like there's a good place to start for cooking your own ROM here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
...and you'll probably want to read up on Android in general so I'd encourage you to Google up the SDK.
thought this would be a good place to post this.
TouchWiz has some nice stuff. I kinda like the launcher, and there are some kinda useful widgets. I hate the icons, and some of the other theme stuff.
I think what you want will kind exist though. Most of the widgets have as good or better equivalents in the market, and ADW launcher offers the sideways sliding app drawer, and as mentioned above we have the launcher available.
I think skinning would be the missing part to really get a nice TouchWiz feel. Someone could make an icon theme, and maybe themed versions of some market sourced widgets that have the TouchWiz look and feel.
I wanted a more AOSP rom and started working on my own and learned a ton, but then tjohnson's ROM really filled the hole better than I could, so I never released anything. If you can get into this an start breaking stuff apart, I think there are enough people out there that would want TouchWiz to make it worth while, but if you aren't up to the effort of porting, skinning would probably achieve most of what you want with a lot less effort.
after installing the apk, make sure you go to menu>settings>applications>HTC Sense and clear defaults then force stop.
Drr, there was a whole other point I forgot.
This is why I am excited about launcher Pro right now. Fede sees that a lot of people like Sense, and realized that he can really implement the great parts of Sense on his own with some effort. This have several benefits. One is giving Sense-like features to those with phones that don't come with it, and allowing people to choose what parts they do or do not want to use. We kinda already do this in custom mods and themeing, but his work will work on non-rooted phones too. Right now his focus is Sense-like widgets, but the same type of effort could be made for TouchWiz or Blur type widgets, and additionally everything could be skinned together, really giving users a great choice without having to give up much at all.

I love LauncherPro. Been using it since version 0.0.2, or whatever. I just hope that now that he is charging for the app, HTC doesn't come down on him with a cease and desist letter. He does seem to be copying the Sense UI, now with the scrollable widgets, and the setup of the widgets.

but the widgets and such have a different look and better functionality/fluidity. It is not truly based off sense UI, Any body can make something that looks similar but works differently. I supported him day one with LP+ for 2.99. Well worth it.

Off topic, but...

Does anyone else feel like it's like wrong to run other looks/UIs, like stock Android, or like TouchWiz look on an HTC device. Whenever I try to, I always restore back to sense as soon as I remember that it's an HTC device that's supposed to have sense. Maybe I'm just weird.

I don't want to start a Sense vs AOSP debate, but IMO Sense is really starting to feel like it's own OS. With each update it seems to feel less like an android. I may be biased because I hated it from the time I had the Eris. Sense was very laggy back then lol.

I have to agree about it coming into its own os feel. I know when I was running the SE X10 everyone asked for a sense port of some kind. I can't stay away from it. I might run GOLauncher from time to time but I flip back to sense.

3rd party roms are always too buggy or lack features for me to justify using them. that includes cm7,miui and all of the sense roms.my phone just seems to perform more consistently with the rooted stock roms and sense launcher, that is the only reason i use it.
of course i hate sense and probably won't be buying another htc phone next go around because of it.

I really enjoyed sense 3.5, plus i love the power saving features. However, I don't like being stuck on one single UI. Its the only reason, why I would never buy an Iphone. Also, I prefer MIUI because i can change customizations as often as i want. Also, I'm thinking some of our dev's will have a complete ICS port way before HTC has a working Sense ICS version.

Something I'd love to see, and would probably keep me using only that is a hybrid between sense and MIUI similar to MIUIwhiz from TSM.

I thought I'd love Sense until I got the Inc2, and pretty much immediately disliked it. I didn't like the launcher - dedicating the entire bottom dock to phone, apps and customize buttons, to me, is just stupid, especially the customize button - once I get things set how I like it, why would I ever use that button again. I know it can be modded to be something else, but we're talking about stock Sense. Also, most of the widgets are useless to me - I don't use Facebook, Twitter or any other social network BS, and I don't schedule anything on a calendar. The e-mail and SMS widgets are OK, but would have been better if they were combined into a catch-all messaging widget like Pure Messenger.
So I ended up using ADW EX (which I had been using since my Fascinate). Went back and forth between CM7, Sense and MIUI for a while until I realized I don't care for the overall aesthetics of Sense, and CM7 is just a little too spartan. I don't like MIUI's lack of an app drawer, but I like how it looks/works otherwise, so I've been using MIUI with ADW EX and it suites me just fine. Never once thought that, being an HTC phone, it HAD to run Sense.
Just my 2 cents.

I feel like you're spot on. I feel like that is the beauty of Android, we have so many choices, and no one can tell you what you have to run or what has to be done with your looks. I used to love MIUI, but for some reason I restored to it today after being on sense for a while, and it just didn't do it for me. I'm kinda curious about lefty's cm7.2 kang build. I love this phone and how many choices there are and how diverse we have it here. To each there own, I love sense, but I also love AOSP. I love Android. Haha

I just came to the DInc2 from OG D1, and I've actually really taken to the Sense UI. To me, coming from custom froyo then GB Roms, then a few HC and ICS themed Roms, the Sense feels so much more polished and intuitive.

There are a lot of Sense features I like, but the only thing I end up using really is the Ring-Pull and shortcut Sense lockscreen. Dedicating valuable screen space is not cool, especially with how little you can change it (skins only for stock). I think HTC does a good job with it, it just isn't for me. I'm liking ADW ex right now on rls1.1, but I'm just biding my time for MIUI to put out their ICS build like I'm sure a lot of people are.

multi-question

so running 2.8.1 calkulin, im just curious as to what peoples apps, presets, add-on's/other tweaks or mods they have put in addition to this already slick rom?
also what browser is quickest? ive used dolphin mini, firefox, and the default "I.E", but whats better?
my launcher is zeam for the time being unless t.w or go laun ex are better for functionality or better customization?
and finally what modem is everyone running with this new 2.8.1 calk rom? should i also run el29 modem as well? battery vs. signal/coverage?

i use blazer, which is based off calkulin (i think... right? sorry im newb), but i can speak to your other Q's. i use ADW launcher and widgetlocker as "tweaks"
also what browser is quickest? ive used dolphin mini, firefox, and the default "I.E", but whats better?
i've used all of those as well as UC browser and opera. honestly i've gone back to stock. there are two things about stock that piss me off; one is the separate brightness, and the second is how i have to press multiple inputs to pull my favorites. despite my stints with other browsers and initial period of infatuation with new slick interfaces, i ran into odd bugs or page errors over time that convinced me to stick with stock. opera did genuinely seem a little faster but there were odd things like comment pages not loading right on certain pages etc... stock has the most reliable experience in my anecdotal evidence
my launcher is zeam for the time being unless t.w or go laun ex are better for functionality or better customization?
as i said i use ADW launcher. i tried spb shell 3d for a trial but thought it was just kinda bloated. adw is great to customize icons, nicer folder/organization options etc. i've never used go launcher. widget locker is awesome i love the ICS style lock screen. i think someone has since posted a free version over in the themes on XDA but since i have widgetlocker i haven't kept tabs on that development
and finally what modem is everyone running with this new 2.8.1 calk rom? should i also run el29 modem as well? battery vs. signal/coverage?
i use el 29 myself. it seems very reliable and battery life is def better than stock. since i'm running blazer so your experience may vary, but ppl generally seem to be running el29. sorry i can't speak specifically to calk's rom, but after i saw your bumps i felt like someone should say something lol

ICS and GoLauncher EX

I have been using Go Launcher EX almost as long as I've had my phone, running it on the Gingerbread ROM (stock).
I'm still using Go Launcher EX since upgrading to the stock ICS rom. I'm not happy with performance and numerous other things, but I'm troubleshooting that independently. Just wiped my Dalvik cache, and ran Fix Permissions. Could be just update bugs everyone is experiencing.
However, I'm noticing something that's made me wonder...
On GB threads going back even to my prior phone, lots of people were using Go Launcher.
On ICS threads... I haven't seen mentions of ANYONE using Go Launcher. Seems like Nova Launcher and Apex launcher are the two big ones named... which oddly seem stripped compared to Go Launcher.
What's the deal? Are there known issues running Go Launcher on ICS? Why else would there seem to be a sudden abandonment of it on ICS?

No, it just seems a lot of folks enjoy something closer to the "pure" ICS experience. I couldn't be tempted...love Go Launcher. Plus we still have scrolling wallpaper...
Nova and Apex will only work on 4.0. They are designed to look like ics and have some of the same transition, effects and what not. That's what I noticed at least.
The stock theme for GO is clean but it isn't going to be confused with ICS and everyone wants the latest and greatest.
I'm personally not impressed by apex or nova because in order to experiment with themes, options, or effects, I have to start with my wallet. I would like access to some of the goodies to see what it can do, and what the themes really look like before I start squandering my lunch money.
I'm using Go launcher + , with no problems, I'm on the latest ICS update..:good:
I used it exclusively until more recently when I made what I think is an awesome setup in ss launcher.

Go launcher seems fat and bloated compared to the other options for ICS. There were very few good GB launchers so Go was more popular.
I agree go launcher has a heavy feel to it. And it wasn't friendly to my battery at all.. I use apex and it has been more battery friendly and light... Go launcher is nice but they need to strip some stuff from it

I'd like to recommend mihome miui home launcher 4.0
if you are on a gingerbread rom you could always use hollo launcher, just like apex, nova launcher but for gingerbread!
When i was running on ics, i tried noca and apex but ended up going back to go launcher. I love the way of its customizations and it works plenty fast for me.

[Q] Similar ROM to Aopk that has all S4 features

Hi everyone,
I really like Aopk and I have used it on my old S2. I was really exited when it came out for the S4 and I flashed it right away but I was really disappointed when I saw that the S4 features were not there. Is there a rom that is very similar to Aopk and has all the S4 features or at least has a very similar lockscreen (very important to me)? I looked at a lot of ROMs that have the S4 features but they look almost the same way as the S4 original look (stock). I wan't it to be stable because I use it for work and for school and I can't have it doing weird things on me. If there isn't a ROM like that is there any way I can take the Aopk ROM and take another ROM that has all the S4 features and some how combine them?(my only complaint to Aopk is that it doesn't have the S4 features)
Oh and by the way, I have the T-Mobile S4
Thank You
If by 'S4 features' you mean the samsung apps and TouchWiz UI then no. Those are locked into the stock rom. There are roms that remove the carrier bloat of the original rom while leaving TouchWiz and samsung apps intact, which it sounds like you have found. But I dont think its possible to add the samsung apps to something like AOKP. AOKP and AOSP are by definition open source so using the closed source Samsung software wouldnt make sense. Thats my understanding, I may be misinformed.

Yea it's not really possible. The closest thing you would get is by taking one of the Google Edition ROMs and hacking in the features yourself since they do run on the TouchWiz Framework and Kernel, it's just stripped down to Vanilla Android.
By the features I mean NFC, S Beam, Air view, Motions and gestures, and stuff like that. Can you guys explain what you said in the previous posts a little more, because I have simple knowledge about ROMs but I am not all that advanced. Is there any way I can at least completely change the lockscreen to look like Aopk's if I can't have Aopk and the features?
Thank You

Stock ROM runs on stock everything, as well as Touchwiz Launcher.
AOKP,CM10, and AOSP Roms Run on Trebuchet, Nova or Apex Launcher.
Stock ROM has al lthese features built in, as well as proprietary files that are made just for stock Touchwiz Period. The have been signed and designed to work with TouchWiz Roms only..
Now if you want Aokp type Lockscreen, there are plenty of Mods and Themes that Can help You with that, PLENTY, Look in the THEMES & APPS SECTION of t he International Galaxy S4 section or the T-Mobile Section. Spend a little more time on XDA as well and you'll find the answer to your question in little or no time at all.
But In simple form, NO , Those features you listed only work on touchwiz Roms, and just a small thing as changing the launcher can disable som of them permanently.

Unfortunately not. But The International Roms are feature packed my friend. Try The Omega Rom, and you can pretty much use the domination theme. P.M Me for more help buddy.
The closest you're going to get is to run Apex or Nova launcher and a AOSP based lock screen on the stock ROM. Not a bad solution and it will retain all of the S4 TW features.

Can you please give me a link to exactly what you are talking about(or download link)? I really want a lockscreen with a slider and you slide to an app and then you put in your pattern to unlock and then you go you your application you've chosen or to your home screen.

Lockscreen - Holo Locker Plus - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobint.locker.plus&hl=en
Launcher - Either Apex or Nova
I've been on CM for the last few years, but I've been running Wicked V4 on this new S4 and LOVE it. Since my OG droid in '09, this is one of my favorite ROMs. Performance-wise it's really really good. Best battery life I've every had on a phone (don't know how much of that is S4 and how much of that is ROM/kernel)
It's AOSP-ish in that it's fully debloated (no samsung or T-mo apps), and it's not themed. That being said, it runs on the TouchWiz framework, so you get all the S4's new hardware features.
It's also a little CM-ish in that there's some minor configurability with respect to the notification bar (clock colors, position, battery icons, etc)
Give it a try!!

I recommend either the infamous ROM or the Wicked ROM. 3minit settings (infamous) makes the phone very customizable. Wicked has (and is expanding) his own ROM control. I've tried both ROMs and honestly don't miss AOSP whatsoever.
It's easier to click "thanks" than type it.

Hi,
I really like Apex and I really like Holo Locker Plus so thank you for the suggestions but when I lock my screen and then press the power button 99% of the time Holo Locker Plus lockscreen does not appear it just goes to my home screen. How can I fix this? And how can I put a pattern lock on it?
Thanks

Not sure about the power button issue. As far as the pattern lock, it should display after the holo screen. Stock would work this way too.
If you like asop looks and theme try this this theme on touchwiz rom

Thank You for all the suggestions, I have a quick question though. Is the OMega ROM good and stable and will it work on my T-Mobile S4?
Yes, it will. Just make sure you flash a T Mobile based kernel afterwards. Otherwise you'll boot loop.

can you give me a link to the kernel because I don't have any experience with kernels and I don't want to flash the wrong one?

Here's 3 of the most flashed kernels for our beloved phones. Use them all, and keep the one you like the most.
