Does anyone else feel like it's like wrong to run other looks/UIs, like stock Android, or like TouchWiz look on an HTC device. Whenever I try to, I always restore back to sense as soon as I remember that it's an HTC device that's supposed to have sense. Maybe I'm just weird.

Nah. Even when I was stock w/Sense, I used ADWLauncher and tried to make it feel like plain android.
Lol nah. I was just running Adw ex on rls 1.1 for an ics look. It went with the theme. I personally love sense, but don't like all the gloss and crap. I want it all matte.

I don't want to start a Sense vs AOSP debate, but IMO Sense is really starting to feel like it's own OS. With each update it seems to feel less like an android. I may be biased because I hated it from the time I had the Eris. Sense was very laggy back then lol.

I have to agree about it coming into its own os feel. I know when I was running the SE X10 everyone asked for a sense port of some kind. I can't stay away from it. I might run GOLauncher from time to time but I flip back to sense.

3rd party roms are always too buggy or lack features for me to justify using them. that includes cm7,miui and all of the sense roms.my phone just seems to perform more consistently with the rooted stock roms and sense launcher, that is the only reason i use it.
of course i hate sense and probably won't be buying another htc phone next go around because of it.
never liked Sense, TouchWiz,etc. TagHome is what i've always run.
Yeah kinda feels weird when u go back to sense, but sense isn't for me when we can root and do anything

I really enjoyed sense 3.5, plus i love the power saving features. However, I don't like being stuck on one single UI. Its the only reason, why I would never buy an Iphone. Also, I prefer MIUI because i can change customizations as often as i want. Also, I'm thinking some of our dev's will have a complete ICS port way before HTC has a working Sense ICS version.

Something I'd love to see, and would probably keep me using only that is a hybrid between sense and MIUI similar to MIUIwhiz from TSM.

I thought I'd love Sense until I got the Inc2, and pretty much immediately disliked it. I didn't like the launcher - dedicating the entire bottom dock to phone, apps and customize buttons, to me, is just stupid, especially the customize button - once I get things set how I like it, why would I ever use that button again. I know it can be modded to be something else, but we're talking about stock Sense. Also, most of the widgets are useless to me - I don't use Facebook, Twitter or any other social network BS, and I don't schedule anything on a calendar. The e-mail and SMS widgets are OK, but would have been better if they were combined into a catch-all messaging widget like Pure Messenger.
So I ended up using ADW EX (which I had been using since my Fascinate). Went back and forth between CM7, Sense and MIUI for a while until I realized I don't care for the overall aesthetics of Sense, and CM7 is just a little too spartan. I don't like MIUI's lack of an app drawer, but I like how it looks/works otherwise, so I've been using MIUI with ADW EX and it suites me just fine. Never once thought that, being an HTC phone, it HAD to run Sense.
Just my 2 cents.

I feel like you're spot on. I feel like that is the beauty of Android, we have so many choices, and no one can tell you what you have to run or what has to be done with your looks. I used to love MIUI, but for some reason I restored to it today after being on sense for a while, and it just didn't do it for me. I'm kinda curious about lefty's cm7.2 kang build. I love this phone and how many choices there are and how diverse we have it here. To each there own, I love sense, but I also love AOSP. I love Android. Haha

I just came to the DInc2 from OG D1, and I've actually really taken to the Sense UI. To me, coming from custom froyo then GB Roms, then a few HC and ICS themed Roms, the Sense feels so much more polished and intuitive.
I'm running Skyraider with dres' OC kernel, but even stock didn't seem laggy, just crazy bloated.

There are a lot of Sense features I like, but the only thing I end up using really is the Ring-Pull and shortcut Sense lockscreen. Dedicating valuable screen space is not cool, especially with how little you can change it (skins only for stock). I think HTC does a good job with it, it just isn't for me. I'm liking ADW ex right now on rls1.1, but I'm just biding my time for MIUI to put out their ICS build like I'm sure a lot of people are.

Just wondering what people's opinions are with regards to their selected ROMS - Please Vote and state why
Sense because the user interface is so much better than non sense roms in my personal opinion. It seems to give a much better look and feel to the usage of the phone.

Couldn't Vote.
Usability or Beauty.
Sense has things like teh beauty, the camera app, Rosie (which i never use), friend-stream, all of which are pretty great, and amazing usability.
while Android has the openness, the speed and stability, and allows you to do more things, but things can get ugly, like the borders of contact pictures, the camera app, and OJ death while it was an issue.
I find myself switching from OD to AuraxTSense and back about 3 times daily, because the camera can't take the pictures as sharp as I like, or because the sense is very bloaty and takes up half the screen on things like messages (reasons for today, tomorrow i think it's the theming for OD vs SYSRW in AuraxTSense)
The pros and cons of each are what is going to kill me. Can't wait for the new sense, and have realised I'm on a 16month plan so no instant Desire HD for me :'(
Which?
Hi
For me it's with Sense. The integration into Android is getting better since the early Windows Mobile days.
As long as Sense + the phone's operating system doesn't end up becoming so bloated that it brings about lag and problems (in an underpowered phone) then it will continue to be useful - in my eyes.
Cheers

Non sense makes sense for me
i began with the nexus one using cyanogen and it was VERY fast. Sense however, seems to give it that certain polish giving a premium feel. Also, i have yet to see a more fluid flipping between homescreens than sense.
I'm on no sense now because many sense apps I don't use and no sense feels sharper.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
i'm staying with Sense cuz of camera and dialer app. Those 2 are the only reason. if CM got them i would gladly switch to it immediately.
I tried CM and OD and i love them both, cuz the devs and designers are using them a lot. and i want the REVOLution theme on my Sense-Desire!!! and they are on CM only~~
Sense. If I didn't want the Sense UI, why would I have purchased a HTC Desire? I could have gone for a Nexus One or... the Galaxy S
No sense for me cause it takes up extra ram and I don't like the black bubble browser menu and complexity of the UI as well as the lack of 3D effect like the launcher2 has. The simplicity of the AOSP nexus one like ROMS help work flow for me. After the new Desire HD rom is ported and provides better functionality, I may consider swapping
Again why is this in the dev section? And not general?
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Am I the only one using sence because of speed? I love launcherpro, but on every vanilla ROM I have been using, launcherpro has been extremely laggy. Even if all benchmarks tell me the phone is faster, it still feels terribly slow. MoDaCo to me feels so much quicker.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Sense is good in a sense that it makes the whole android UI more easy to use, more manageable, and makes the whole thing more beautiful. People always tend to put different themes on their phone to make it as their own custom look and feel. So for me I like sense... either that or install launcher and download your own preferred theme right? I guess it all goes down to personal preference.

Without Sense ... sense is slow
For easy klicking and social networks and so on its fine perhaps ... but i never need it ... so no need for sense. The Clock with weather is fine ... so i use Fency. For Calendar ... Purewidgets ... 3 Widgets replace the hole sense for me so enjoy the speed.

I have two Desires which I regularly swap between - one is running CyanogenMod and the other MoDaCo's MCR8 Sense ROM.
I'm sure that in benchmarks CyanogendMod is "faster" but in my experience, in real world usage, there is no difference.
Actually, there is one difference - CyanogenMod is way *slower* when copying files to/from the devices in USB storage mode.

As much as I love Sense UI, I'd rather have it optional, with a possibility to add/remove the components.

Ditto. Thus I ditched Sense altogether. I didn't use more than half of the components of sense. most frustrating is that it doesn't completely replace the base process, just runs on top of it consuming resources.
I posted this on the CM thread but i might as well ask you guys.
A question to a sense user switching to CM/Stock rom, how do you live without htc camera and htc phone dialer?
i mean for those that bought their Desire or starting to use their phone with sense without knowing a vanilla UI exist(like me). i just felt somethings missing without the htc camera and dialer. I've flashed OD/CM a couple of times but returning back to Sense cuz of that. Otherwise i would stay on CM, it is such a good rom.
I'm buying a Cybershot Digital camera but thats not so soon so i would like to have a decent camera app before that. i mean, the resolution is not wide as htc camera when taking pictures. and if i wanted a wide one i need to lower the resolution to 4.5mp? or is there any trick to that? cuz everytime i capture a pic, i'll get this right and left bar beside the pic using the 5mp resolution.
as for dialer, dialer one doesnt feel quite right to replace the htc dialer, though i may accept it sooner or later if i got my digital camera after this.
Just wanted an opinion for a Sense starter, not from pure stock rom user cuz you know vanilla UI from the start so you dont know how i feel. but you may post your opinion as well.
last question, can someone give a thought bout the 720p video recording? is it good, or better than sense's 720p?
and does this support A2SD+,i mean in this CM6, cuz CM6 RC2 doesnt have this yet and i'm on OD cuz of this actually. i want A2SD+ cuz i cant live without it...
I'm on Modaco R8 self baked ROM btw.
Thanks!
As a developer myself, just no in the tech field, I find it helpful to know what other want so that I can produce the best. I'm sure that most of you do this because it's something that YOU personally want and or like. I deeply appreciate the work that has gone into such wonderful ROM's and I can't wait to see more.
As for me, I've tried out RR, CM, SR, Frank, Jager, ASOP, and a few other odds and ends.
It seems to me there should be a blend. A blend between Sense and well....nonsense.
Currently, I'm on the Ultimate ASOP. This ROM has been amazing because of the ability to customize. Like every ROM, there are quirks or just small things that bother me, but it's SOOOO close to greatness, IMHO. I like a lot about a lot of ROMS but if they're lacking Sense then I miss that. If they have Sense, I miss the customizing of the Non Sense. My question is, can the two be made to be CommonSense?
What I'm talking about is a ROM that combines a little bit of the HTC Sense side with the applications and setting and customization of the Non HTC Sense ROMs. For instance, the email application in the Driod root IMHO opinion is much better then the Sense one. You can easily check multiple emails and the default background is back. What if you could have Sense, but change the lock screen to something different and be able to add different themes easily? There are several instances where the two could be combined to make CommonSense. And, if you have some ideas please share!
I guess i'm just looking for ideas from others that I can take a pitch to a Chef along with a few $$$ to make a ROM that'll do just that. Is there anyone else that thinks the same or I am the only one riding the HellaNoSense boat?
check out IncDoes AOSP. but you should have posted in q/a or general for future reference

i prefer a sense based rom with virtually every sense component gutted aside from dialer and contacts (and other key vital stuff). most users use launcher pro, yet most devs seem to focus their [sense] work around modified rosie. Which doesnt seem to make a ton of sense to me. im sure the launcher pro dev would allow the use of his work cooked into roms with his permission right?

The look & feel of the new Sense UI (The Desire Z ROM specifically), the fastest and most optimized speed possible, working camera w/ 720p video (only thing wrong with Desire Z ROM, imo), lots of free memory, clear of all the bloatware apps, aaaaaaaaaaaaand.... Ability to quickly change theme settings (transparency, selection colors, etc).

My perfect rom would be:
Sense based Vanilla rom
htc keyboard
htc camera
htc gallery
htc contacts
either HTC facebook or contacts syncable with market facebook.
emmc working properly
adw built in
customizations avalable in cyanogen's latest rom
power widget built in to notification pull down.
figure out how to change the answer/silence to tabs
reboot option in power menu
6 signal bars
htc battery icon with %
keep the colored sense settings menu icons.
tab or rotary music controls (hidden when not in use)
thats all i can think of.
Having tried just about every ROM out there (and a couple of them a number of times) I think the problem I run into is there are little things here and there that I like about each.
All of our tastes are different, thus we like different things. Some people like the circle battery mod, some people like the rotary lock screen, etc etc...
What would be really cool is if there were a way to easily choose the specific mods you wanted... kinda like picking out options on a new car.
Ultimately, I think the answer is a dev that is willing to build you a custom ROM to your exact specifications. Of course, this would come with a price tag, but hey, it's exactly what you wanted (and it would be worth it IMO... any takers LOL).
In the meantime, I'm trying to figure out how to get what it is that I want and experiment. It's been fun, frustrating at times, and I still don't have everything I like, but at least we have lots of options to choose from, and I'm learning something new in the process
Is it not possible to build a Rom with a bunch of on off switches that allow you to select sense or no sense , or give you the option for circle battery vs stock ....
IMO.... this would be the ULTIMATE Rom .....

Hey guys,
So I'm getting a little impatient with waiting for Gingerbread on my DHD and was thinking of going to CM7 now that its Final. Previous Custom ROMS so far havn't really done it for me. I kinda like the reliablility and battery life etc of the stock build.
Has anyone tried CM7 on the DHD who could maybe give a little account of how it worked out (battery life etc)?
Thanks

Battery life is superb on CM7 and much better than the Gingerbread Sense ROMs. I take it you have tried the latest Desire S builds? I recommend RCMix if you haven't. If you are wanting the pure Google experience though, you have nothing to fear with CM7.
Regards.
Stock rom offers a better connection between all the social networks, better stock widgets and htc sense camera app. hmmm i did have CM7 for while and i loved it but its just the camera app that did it for me, i guess im just too used to HTC sense !
I had no problems with CM7 either. Very nice rom. Camera App is nice. Audio is great. Having or not having HTC Sense is a big decision maker. Once or if you get bored of Sense, then you will really enjoy a rom like CM7 for all its other differences. If it could have the Sense Weather animations and clock, Touch Input keyboard and HTC Reader 2.0 - it could be my ideal rom at this point.
Although I'm a relative noob with trying the many Android roms.

The clock, albeit not with the flip function, can be found all over the internet. Search for Fancy Widget (Sense Clock) to find it. If you can't and desperately need it, I will pm you the apk upon request, although will have to dig it out first. Keyboard? I'm confused as to exactly what you mean, but you can use the HTC keyboard on CM7 as well as numerous other replacements. HTC Reader??!! No way! Aldiko and Laputa both make HTC's attempt look poor. Not to mention Kindle.
Personally, the slight nuances of pure Android are what I find hard to resist. The transition animations, which were present on the Donut Sense UI but inexplicably left out since 2.1, are a big one. I know you can find ROMs which include the different animations or use Launcher Pro, but they never operate 100% and stutter/glitch at random moments. Even the way the keyboard bounces onto the screen rather than just "appearing" gives a more polished feel. The clean simple UI, which lacks the clutter and plethora of menu's that Sense incorporates is a dream to navigate, and the overall speed of the OS is unrivalled. I guess for the "average user", Sense is a comfortable, intuitive blanket which makes Android accessible for the masses. In the Windows Mobile days and arguably when Cupcake/Donut were still in use, it was a necessity. Since 2.1 however, I feel it is no longer needed as the Android UI has evolved to a point where it should appeal to anyone.
Regards.
EDIT: Just seen your website Grant! Forgive the app recommendations, I see you are already well versed in alternatives.
Thanks guys!!
Im still not sure! I wasn't the interface i was worried about! I've given the customs a whirl and its been more the reliability and performance that have brought me back to the stock ROM. I've downloaded the CM7 zip! might give it a chance over the weekend before the week starts over! Ill always have my back-up for when HTC decide to give us an official release of 2.3.3.
Maybe ill never go back once i try CM7!

One thing I found missing is the ability to hide certain albums within the gallery. A nice feature when you've lots of crap on you SD card! Also having the GPS issue that seems pretty widespread.
Other than that, battery life = more awesome than Stock!
This is my first time owning a phone with Sense on it. I have played with other peoples phones with the older version and did not like it much.
I have to say I actually like this version!
My problem is the lag sense has. Load up a bunch of widgets like mail and such and there is annoying lag.
Its definitely not the phone itself. I have tried Apex laucher with widgets on every screen and its as smooth as butter. I like the look of Sense so much better though so Im trying to figure out if which I want to use.
I came from a nexus one which served me well for 2 years so this is a big upgrade for me.
Has HTC addressed these type of issues on other phones? Im really hoping they do as I think its kinda embarrassing that there flagship phone has this much lag because of there software. You would think they would address this asap.
Im already rooted with android revolution and it helped a little but not much. I guess I could not use a bunch of the widgets but there there to use and Im trying to get away from having a zillion app icons on my screens.
Also - in the future do most of the Roms eventually address this issue as they mature?
Thanks!
For starters use the advice on the following thread (credir to OP )
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599214
Secondly, sense will always be heavier/laggier then AOSP but for sure custom sense roms will be much smoother in the future.
Patience is a virtue as this is a new device/processor and the devs need time to make it as smooth and stable as possible
I tried the above and it helped slightly but not much.
Im fully loaded with Apex now and running smooth. So smooth I can scroll as fast as possible with wigets on every screen and no lag.
Now that I have it set up to my liking Im really enjoying apex.

me, I think it's a big step up from my previous HTC EVO, while I still like that phone more than what I am using (htc t328w with Sense 4), I always found Sense 3 a bit laggy and crunchy, it always felt like it chugged a little on my phone. However, I absolutely loved the widgets and clock and everything. This however, basically takes all that, makes it sexier and smoother... it's refreshing! On my other androids, I almost always used a 3rd party launcher (Launcher Pro), but out of all the launchers I've tried right now, Sense 4 just seems to do everything better (save for some limitations...like not being able to change the number of homescreens). I like it ^-^, vanilla ICS is obviously much better, but this is one of the better UI's I've used (better than touchwiz and blur, easily)
What about you????
I hate it. It's not better at anything I find, and in some places it just looks bad because Sense clashes so much with the default UI.
I liked the idea of Facebook contact intergration but it does a worse job at it than my Palm Pre did.
The only thing I really like about it is the weather clock.

Do you mean like how one screen it's all sense like but then on the next it goes to to that minimalistic ICS blue and black???
Yes, that is a bit....odd indeed
It's crap. Ugly, doesn't add any features worth having (for me at least...), and it runs slow... Wish they'd release source, so we could get vanilla ICS. It annoys me that Google went to the trouble of making a good UI, and manufactures overlay stuff like this on top of it for no apparent reason...

How is it slow for you? Menu's load up fast, scrolling between homescreens and in the app drawer is smooth. The only thing that's a bit slow is the actual HTC menu's like settings, or in messages. The scrolling is a bit choppy, but it seems it was intended that way as it always stays the same (the speed)

No kidding right? Like when uninstalling an app?
Having vanilla ICS would be cool, but honestly I'm not a huge fan of the ICS UI design either. I don't mind Sense too much. I do wish HTC would release more skins though. Like, a lot more. It bothers me that they have a simple, built-in theme system, and don't really use it.

Yes, that would be so badass if the Personalize app actually let you...PERSONALIZE your phone
Changing the colors of menu's and status bars and so forth.....that would be amazing
I really, truly hate it.
After using a Nexus One for 2 years, and then a Nexus S, the One V lags so much with better hardware that it's not even funny. Even the N1 with ICS after 2 years of use was way more snappy than my one v straight out of the box.
Thankfully MCR Vanilla makes it bearable, but it's still sense underneath, settings menus are different for no reason, the lockscreen is stupid (you cannot disable the lockscreen even if you add a pattern or pin, requiring two "unlocks"), and so on.

CM9 cannot arrive soon enough for me
Hulk love vanilla. Hulk hate sense. Hulk smash phone.
Hulk sad.
Dislike it
In my opinion its a downgraded version of ics.. its to plain. Also if you havn't noticed sense.. just totally slows down the phone, its like Htc just tweaked the older versions of sense and never bothered finishing it.
I hate it it use too much RAM so my phone is to slow to play Games, i have de-sensed the myOnev Rom v3.0 and is much more faster und you have al least 140 mb free RAM with Sense i had 80 mb free RAM

I like Sense a lot actually. my biggest problem is the load it puts on the ram for the phone. Friend stream is probably my biggest draw to Sense. The integration of facebook and twitter is done in a way that I really really like. I also like the integrated mail thread that shows you mail from all your accounts at once. I guess to sum it up I like sense for the widgets, and although you can get some sense widgets on other ui's/launchers, you cant get friend stream without sense. Im running CM9 now and I miss friend stream. but I agree with the general feeling that sense is bulky and puts too much strain on virtual memory to be a great ui
Idk what you guys are complaining about I love Sense.
I just got my one V on Friday and I like this phone....alot. My Nexus S was Sh**ty and I hated stock Android.
Sense makes the phone more attractive in my opinion and adds more flare to the phone...I still hate Stock Android
on ICS but it does look loads better than Cupcake-Gingerbread.
I have 80 Apps total
253 MB of my 708 Internal Storage used
Currently about 181 MB ram used and 181 MB free
and it is working fine.
HTC Sense is sexy
For power users it will obviously suck.....for average users the sense ui is just perfect...better than the stock android

I love Sense so much, I rooted and installed cm9 two days after I bought this phone. As soon as the backlight issue is resolved, I'll be flashing cm10.
I think it doesn't look that bad, but sometimes is super laggy, and the stock android ui made by Google completely blows it away(that's why I'm on cm10 )!
