[Q] Rooted... but fussy clockwork backup

ok so I rooted my g2/vision/whatever you wanna call it.
Went a little rocky on the root, for some reason after the first perma root reboot, I was unrooted. Rebooted again and now have perma root for realz! and my bff becky was lyk omgz.
Ok now serious business time.
I installed clockwork rom manager (2.5.1.2) so I can make a backup before I go do some fun stuff, but here's my issue, everytime I try to reboot into recovery, I get the default recovery screen. When I try to do a backup, I get the default recovery screen. It does nothing but show an icon of my device with the "!" on it.
I've dealt with the clockwork recovery on my g1 before but it always worked no problemo. Dunno if something went wrong or I'm being a noob deluxe. Any input to aid in my troubles is much appreciated.

Just gonna throw this out did u flash recovery after installing Rom manager ?

i used the option in clockwork rom manager to flash it. Says current recovery is 2.5.1.2. Latest recovery is 2.5.1.2.
Might as well try it again. I haven't tried the manual method yet though.
EDIT : ROFL, I tried it again just now and I'm looking at the clockwork recovery console. Wow... my phone requires me to do everything twice apparently...

Don't worry, I had to do the exact same thing you did.
Root twice.
Flash Clockwork twice.
I believe it's a known issue.
At least that's all we had to do!

kind of a weird issue to have really... wonder how that might affect some mods down the line

please remember, the nand backup could be buggy or corrupted sometimes, backup and restore if you need to, just so you could check if the backup is working

Looked urgent huh? That's because it is. I see that most people that have their phones bricked is from using ROM manager to install a rom that they downloaded onto their phone.
LISTEN TO ME WHEN I TELL YOU....
Do not use ROM manager to install a custom ROM that is not listed in the application.
I too have bricked my phone this way and I never made a back up. The quickest solution is to actually re-root your phone again by putting it back into download mode.
Look in the forums for instructions. I'm sure others can explain it better than me.
Only use ROM Manager to install clockwork mod recovery.
From there, do it the manual way. It may be more labor, but it is better than bricking your phone.
There are instructions to do that too. If you can't find it just throw me a PM.

same here. can you elaborate why you think or provide proof that cwm is bricking peoples phones.
I have used cwm on several phones and never had any problems getting to recovery and flashing roms.

Probably because rom manager only wipes data and cache at most. Most of these roms work best with a super wipe

The touch cwm is the worst. Have to toggle signature verification every time, and point it to the internal sd card. Only one brick (soft), though.
That v5 one is notoriously bad on many phones. Just buggy. Not a dealbreaker for me. Is the other touch one better?

I think we're confusing Rom Manager with Clockwork Mod...
Rom Manager is an app made by koush, its a downloadable market app thats included with Cyanogenmod and other roms (on other phones) that makes it easy to install a ROM without bothering with booting into recovery. I used it extensively during my Nexus days, though on the t989 many roms you have to super wipe or do a lot of advanced things you can only do inside clockwork mod.
ClockworkMod is a recovery manager for your android phone, also made by Koush. The classic version that has been on all phones is the non-touch type, latest version is 5.0.2.7. You use the power button and volume rocker to navigate. There is another version dubbed ClockworkMod Touch, latest version is 5.8 something...you can actually navigate with touchscreen in this.
Many people's problems, I've experienced it too, is that CWM touch likes to reboot randomly during crucial moments (during a backup, MD5 creation, flashing a ROM...), leaving the potential for (and in some cases it actually has) bricked phones. Plus the touchscreen navigation is tempermental, its just not very responsive or accurate. Very dangerous bugs for such a sensitive area on the phone.
So do yourself a favor...use ClockworkMod, the originial. Its not going to kill you to navigate with the volume rocker and power button...it actually makes you pay attention and go slower so you don't make mistakes and push the wrong thing. Its easy to install...with Rom Manager! Download it from the market, when you open it near the top there will be a button to flash the latest ClockworkMod. It will be the non touch type.
As stated above, I wouldn't use the ROM flashing functions of Rom Manager with our phone, but it does have an easy button to reboot into recovery for roms without the option in the shutdown menu. It's the easiest way to flash CWM though.

You guys can stop "trippin" there are 2 roms under the dl section in rom manager for our phone DO NOT IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM FLASH THIS TO YOUR SGH-T989!!! it WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE!!! Somebody just needs to email koush about it so they can be removed. IMHO dl to your phone or pc and then flash away a superwipe is recommended. I for one am iffy with rom manager because it errors out on restores sometimes.

Still rockin the original CWM, never saw all the fuss about the touch stuff. Manually toggling is much safer and reliable IMO

I see that people have mistaken that I was talking about not using CMW. Let me explain. CMW (Clockwork Mod Recovery) and ROM Manager are two different things. You get CMW from ROM Manager. You use CMW to flash ROMs. Some people use ROM Manager to flash ROMs instead of CMW. That's the way you get bricked. By flashing ROM's that aren't on ROM Manager. I hope this clears it up.

There's also soft brick which can be saved. He was most likely referring to that.

ODIN is really crappy software IMO.. Despite its uses.

Even rom manager has its uses...I wouldn't use it to flash ROMS, because often with our phones you need more wiping than just data & cache, which is all it can do before it flashes a rom. It however it can be used to easily flash CWM and for phones without the option in the shutdown menu, you can use rom manager to reboot straight into CWM.

Guy's, what he is trying to tell you is that there are 2 ROMS that can be dowloaded and installed by ROM MANAGER that WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE. They are listed as T989 roms but they are actually for the International SGS2....

He's accurate about what he described in this thread. I created a similar thread (probably got deleted) yesterday about the same issue. Just because you haven't experienced bricking yours doesn't mean he shouldn't warn others.
I hard-bricked my T989 just simply trying to boot into recovery (non-touch CWM) from the Rom Manager app...and I have read similar issues. The phone goes fcuking dead.
UPS just dropped off my replacement phone today...ready to be rooted for an ICS AOSP ROM if I can find one. Done with CM7 for now.

[Q]Creating a backup before I root my GIO

hello, i just got my first android phone so I'm new to this sort of stuff, though I love being able to unlock hidden potential of different devices, so naturally I discovered the ability to root smart phones and all that good stuff.
The model I have is the Samsung Galaxy Gio GT-S5660M. It's running 2.3.4. Gingerbread version.
I've been reading a lot of guides and for the most part rooting and adding additional utilities like flash, etc. seems pretty simple. However, I have not yet been able to find out how to create a back of up of my stock firmware when I bought the phone in case I end up bricking it, or decide I want to return to stock.
I've read many guides that claim to show how to create back ups and recovery points, but I'm still having trouble understanding it.
To be more specific, I would like to create as opposed to download, a back up of the phone in it's current state which is, as I said earlier, stock. I did a factory reset since I had some stuff installed while I was fiddling with it for the first time.

You have to root it before you can back up stock rom so, firstly you root it (you can find guides here on xda)
Then install clockworkmod recovery: warning: DON'T EVER USE ROM MANAGER TO INSTALL CLOCKWORKMOD ON YOUR GIO, IT WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE!! use one of the recoveries found in xda, you will also find guides to install them there.
Then third; backup in clockworkmod using "backup and restore"

so first of all, what I'm looking for is called a ROM right?
what I don't get though is how come I need to modify the device before creating the backup. Isn't the phone modified at that point? Or is the stock configuration being stored somewhere on the phone that I can't see without clockwork?

You cannot create a backup without the recovery mod CWM Clockwork Recovery Mod. But to install this you need your device rooted (modified so you can modify and view system files)

1 - you don't need to search for a rom to backup your stock rom
2 - you need to root your phone in order to be able to backup your rom
3 - you need to install a more advanced recovery (program "similar" to pc BIOS) in order to do a nandroid backup
4 - after you flash that more advanced recovery (aka CWM -> ClockWorkMod), you backup your rom in "backup and restore" menu, backup. It will then store your rom in a folder.
5 - you should strongly consider after that, to install a custom rom made by many of the devs here on XDA in order to have a better experience with your phone...

I've already uploaded a stock ROM backup last fall of the same Gingerbread ROM you're running, along with instructions on how to make one yourself or flash mine.
The best advice I can give you is: research, research, and more research.

I use px-cwm-v2.zip recovery.
You flash it using stock recovery.

Darkshadow, whats the thread's name where you posted the ROM and instructions? I'd like to check that out too.
Also, whats a good rom to consider upgrading to? Something that has the ability to play flash videos.

If I understand correctly, roms are basically whole operating systems that have been customized by the developer. So a rom can be already rooted and have clockwork as well as other custom stuff, and I just need to flash it. The alternative to this is to do everything manualy... root the current OS, add clockwork and whatever else. Correct?
Also, I'm not sure yet if a rooted phone has any extra options on it's own, or if it's only a set up that's sole purpose is to allow other applications to be installed who then will give the user better control over his device.

I've got Odin and the tar downloaded, but when I go into download mode with my phone and connect it to the PC, it says that the device driver was not successfuly installed, and I get no confirmation in Odin that a connection has been made between the phone and the program.
What am I missing?

Nevermind, I needed to install Kies. Don't even need to run it. Apparently it has the driver that's needed.

Okay, I've rooted my phone successfully. Now the next step is to install Clockwork and create a back up.
Now that I understand a little bit the way Odin and flashing ROM works, I think it would be better to just download a stock ROM and in case something goes wrong, I can just flash it the way I flashed the rooted one.
(I think I saw a completely stock ROM somewhere for my model but I don't remember where. A link would be appreciated if it exists.)
Correct me if I'm wrong pls.
Also, if I do that, then is there any reason to install Clockwork since I've read that many ppl have issues with installing it and it's riskier than rooting or installing other software.
Right now I think what I'm most interested in is installing Adobe Flash Player 11 or something of the sort that can play flash videos and streams.

how outdated is this cwm?

I'm using Opera as my browser so from what I've learned, flash doesn't work with it period. Is skyfire a good alternative?
Also, like I said, I don't think I need the clockwork if I can get a clean stock ROM that I can just flash if something goes wrong. As I don't intend to download many apps or add many phone numbers (memorized instead), a backup isn't really needed.

Clockwork is not riskier than other things you do. Just follow steps and you see no problems.

its an older version, its 5.0.2.7, theres also 5.0.2.8 but these give some problems after installing/wiping, so some people still use the older version.

Hello guys,
I'm new here. I have the same problem as anonxlg. It says can't mount system. I also used the version from the big thread for new users. Can anyone enlighten me on what to do? I've been searching the forum and google, but can't make it work. I feel like a compleet noob now, and I don't feel special about it.

Edit: I kept searching, and finally found a working 5.0.2.7 version. First I had another 5.0.2.7 version, but when I tried to install it didn't work. I finally found "signed_cwm-5.0.2.7-flashablezip-ext4+rfs.zip (Flash from Recovery)" on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421650 (through google actually. I have to get used to this site), and I'm making my backup now.

i used the cwm linked and backup worked, i tried installing cm9 beta8 (galaxyics), and it would get stuck after samsung bootscreen (it flashes a white pick or soemthing before full back screen)
i tried restoring backup i made, and it didnt work, some mount error again
i reverted back to 5.0.2.6 and did the restore backup again, and this time it goes up the the galaxy gio gt5660m screen and just stop..
note that i do not know what the rfs/ext4 is for for the gio if that is what is causing problems

Problems with cwm after installing paranoid android rom

Ok so I have kind of a strange problem and i dont think its with cwm. I always make nandroid backups before flashing new roms as a precaution but in this case it did no good I recently installed Paranoid Android on my phone to try out Jelly Bean. It is pretty awesome But it is a little buggy with a few of the apps i like to run (rom toolbox and dropbox being the major ones). After restoring all my apps i decided to restore my messaging data. That caused the rom to not boot past the google screen. So I decided to go back to Black Ice AOKP with my backup. Didnt work, gave me the "error while restoring /data!". I also just recently updated to CWM Touch 6.0.0.5. I also tried an earlier backup with the same problem. I decided to use fastboot to flash a different CWM (5.8.*.* touch and regular) and basically has the same issue just a different response (could not find data.img, cache.img, and boot.img). Because i use Titanium backup anyway i decided to just wipe and flash Black Ice but when i do it boots for about 30 seconds and then the phone restarts. I tried this multiple times doing multiple formats to no avail. Just for sh*ts i decided to try to wipe and reinstall Paranoid Android. IT BOOTED!! But the weird thing is is that all my apps were still there including my messaging data that borked the install to begin with :/ Anyway to make a long story short, my phone is now working but im afraid that i can't restore my backup or even install a new rom without issues. It seems that CWM will not properly wipe my phone anymore. I am wondering what this new rom could have installed that would cause these issues? I didnt flash any new radios or bootloaders so i dont think that is an issue. Please help!! lol I would like to go back until this rom gets further development or AOKP goes to JB. Any help is appreciated. Thank you for your time

I really don't think the ROM caused your recovery to not work correctly. Have you tried a different recovery, like TWRP?

Oh, and any problems you're having with apps on Paranoid can be easily fixed by changing what mode they display in via Paranoid Settings.

It Seems Like Maybe This New Rom Messed With The Permissions And That's Why i Can't Properly Format? The Thing Is Is That CWM Worked Fine Before Booting This Rom. Silly Me For Not Thinking Of Changing The Settings. dropBox Now Works But My Swype Is Still Messed Up

Swype works fine for me at 320 dpi and phone mode. Which is the Gnex's default settings so if an app gives you issues try those settings. I'm not too sure about CWM, it's been a while since I've used it. If you want to try TWRP the easiest way is to just install Goo Manager and go to Flash ROMs and in the additional options select Flash Open Recovery Script.

Quick question.. does it save the backups to /sdcard like CWM? I thought it said it backed up to /data/media which means if i completely wipe /data ill lose my backups. /sdcard and /data/media are the same thing. I'm sure there's a better technical explanation but I think it's symlinked or something. So wiping data or factory reset in recovery will not wipe your SD contents. From within the ROM it might.

Recoveries TWRP VS CWM

I have always used CWM and currently use the touch version. I have had some problems with CWM lately like the no media mess up with ROM manager. And the other day when going to 4.2. Things I like about TWRP is the keyboard and file manager as well as being able to update to the newest touch recovery through goo manager. So before making the switch from my staple recovery is there anything I should know. I have heard TWRP may have issues with Cyanogen and might be a little slow?

Same here. Although the /0/ thing has me seriously considering switching to TWRP.

I don't mind trying both but I like all my backups to be easily accessible within my recovery. Plus I don't think I would run into anything for a while and don't want to invest making all my backups in TWRP then find out an issue that someone may have already encountered before me. Sorry of that comes off weird. I started this thread more as an opinion on what converts maybe like or dislike about TWRP.

I've had CWM for a long time(since the galaxy S days) but when i got my gnex off on ebay, It had the TWRP recovery installed, after trying it I decided that I will never go back to CWM. It's just a matter of user preference really, for all those years that I've used CWM I've never had any single issues with it. I can say the same for TWRP after using it for almost a year now.
Few things I love about TWRP:
-Swipe to confirm Install
-Full touch screen with big buttons(i know CWM has touch screen version too but I was only able to try the semi touch screen version and did not really like it)
-File Manager
-Ability to compress(don't know if CWM can do this but I've included it too) and rename/name backups
-You can queue the zips you want to install(maximum of 10), no more going back and forth between sdcard directories and recovery menus
Those are the ones that I could think of at the moment. I'm sure there's a lot more else to list down. If you ask me TWRP is a bit more user friendly because of the UI

Just switched to TWRP a couple of months ago, after having always used CWM. No real issues with CWM. I have just found TWRP to be more user friendly for me.

TWRP have more features than CWM, for example, file managing and the ability to name backups. Thats a great advantage if you ask me.

Recently switched to TWRP. Loving it so far. I especially like the Advanced -> ADB Sideload function so I can superwipe and flash without worrying about the internal storage.

I've always used CWM, but like others, because of /0/, I'm considering trying twrp. I just made a backup with CWM 6.0.1.9, but now that i've found it, i'm unsure of how to copy it to my computer. That is, my mac recognizes /data/media/0 via android file transfer, but i cannot transfer the backup from here. And I really dont want to move the backup and blobs folders twice just for the sake of copying. Any ideas? Also, whatever happened to navbar arrows in cwm touch?

I switched to TWRP because of the excessive number of blobs made by CWM.
It's a real pain having to copy over 2,000 files and folders over MTP to a computer.
I like to keep the most recent backup on my Gnex, while moving the older backups to my computer.

Consider this. I used cwr on my droid X and it worked fine. The day I got my Gnex and rooted it I ignored CWR and immediately installed TWRP. Never looked back. I always hear people say "I switched from CWR to TWRP and its great". Not once have I heard it the other way
