Recoveries TWRP VS CWM - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have always used CWM and currently use the touch version. I have had some problems with CWM lately like the no media mess up with ROM manager. And the other day when going to 4.2. Things I like about TWRP is the keyboard and file manager as well as being able to update to the newest touch recovery through goo manager. So before making the switch from my staple recovery is there anything I should know. I have heard TWRP may have issues with Cyanogen and might be a little slow?

I still use CWM, it does the job for me. Others swear by TWRP so you're better off trying them both

Same here. Although the /0/ thing has me seriously considering switching to TWRP.

I don't mind trying both but I like all my backups to be easily accessible within my recovery. Plus I don't think I would run into anything for a while and don't want to invest making all my backups in TWRP then find out an issue that someone may have already encountered before me. Sorry of that comes off weird. I started this thread more as an opinion on what converts maybe like or dislike about TWRP.

I've had CWM for a long time(since the galaxy S days) but when i got my gnex off on ebay, It had the TWRP recovery installed, after trying it I decided that I will never go back to CWM. It's just a matter of user preference really, for all those years that I've used CWM I've never had any single issues with it. I can say the same for TWRP after using it for almost a year now.
Few things I love about TWRP:
-Swipe to confirm Install
-Full touch screen with big buttons(i know CWM has touch screen version too but I was only able to try the semi touch screen version and did not really like it)
-File Manager
-Ability to compress(don't know if CWM can do this but I've included it too) and rename/name backups
-You can queue the zips you want to install(maximum of 10), no more going back and forth between sdcard directories and recovery menus
Those are the ones that I could think of at the moment. I'm sure there's a lot more else to list down. If you ask me TWRP is a bit more user friendly because of the UI

Just switched to TWRP a couple of months ago, after having always used CWM. No real issues with CWM. I have just found TWRP to be more user friendly for me.

TWRP have more features than CWM, for example, file managing and the ability to name backups. Thats a great advantage if you ask me.

Recently switched to TWRP. Loving it so far. I especially like the Advanced -> ADB Sideload function so I can superwipe and flash without worrying about the internal storage.

I've always used CWM, but like others, because of /0/, I'm considering trying twrp. I just made a backup with CWM 6.0.1.9, but now that i've found it, i'm unsure of how to copy it to my computer. That is, my mac recognizes /data/media/0 via android file transfer, but i cannot transfer the backup from here. And I really dont want to move the backup and blobs folders twice just for the sake of copying. Any ideas? Also, whatever happened to navbar arrows in cwm touch?

I switched to TWRP because of the excessive number of blobs made by CWM.
It's a real pain having to copy over 2,000 files and folders over MTP to a computer.
I like to keep the most recent backup on my Gnex, while moving the older backups to my computer.

Consider this. I used cwr on my droid X and it worked fine. The day I got my Gnex and rooted it I ignored CWR and immediately installed TWRP. Never looked back. I always hear people say "I switched from CWR to TWRP and its great". Not once have I heard it the other way

Rom Manager Back up Issue!

Ok so for some reason. When I try to backup my ROM. it just goes to clockwork recovery. And sits there! any ideas? Was working great before! Thanks
Killing Zombies With My Samsung Galaxy S2
How do you backup your rom? I'm going to guess you're using rom manager, based on the very little information you gave in the OP.
If you're in clockworkmod already, all you need to do is go down to the backup/restore, then backup.
If you normally used rom manager, and it used to backup automatically for you once rebooted into cwm, then it's a rom manager problem most likely. Did you just update it or something? (I never use rom manager, while it's a nice interface, it causes problems too often for my taste. I've tried it across a wide range of devices too.)
If none of these are the answers you were looking for, a bit more information would help. (Again, these are all guesses based on what you gave me to work with )
Yea I was using clockwork mod to make a backup of my Rom but now it won't work.just boost me into the recovery screen. So Im going to just use that to make a backup from now on! Only used it because you can name it! Easy to keep track of the backups that way!
Killing Zombies With My Samsung Galaxy S2
Any news on what's up with Rom Manager/clockwork mod recovery? Still not backing up roms. Just boots into the recovery menu but won't start backing up for some reason.yes I know I can just use recovery to back up my rom.but I already paid for the pro version so I want to use it.any ideas? Thanks!!
Killing Zombies With My Samsung Galaxy S2
reinstall clockwork recovery
This is also happening to me. I try to back up my current ROM and it just reboots, starts CWM recovery mode, then does nothing.
i was having a similar problem before, but then i went into recovery mode and backed it up there instead, worked flawlessly.
Glad im not tge only one that noticed. I like using it because you can name your back ups before they happen. I get lost trhing to find backups with their default names.

My problem its the opposite,I was able to make to nand backups just before changing the stock rom, installed Juggs and then wanted to go back to stock and both my backups failed in the mdsum.
I have the same issue but its not that serious once in recovery just manually do it the old fashion way .

I have been experiencing the same issue on my skyrocket for about 5-6 days I would guess.
Same issue for me. Won't even bring up my old backups but I see them with root explorer. Any help on resolving this issue would be appreciated....
UPDATE- Seems to be an app issue - look at the feedback left. Hopefully they will fix it soon. In the meantime, I am just doing it the old fashioned way as someone posted earlier.
a lot of people are mixing up clockworkmod recovery with rom manager...
your "RECOVERY" IS CWM, so yeah do your backups and restores in CWM not rom manager. rom manager doesn't work right...
you can always rename the folder for your backups.

[warning] rom manager t-989 for roms [warning]

Looked urgent huh? That's because it is. I see that most people that have their phones bricked is from using ROM manager to install a rom that they downloaded onto their phone.
LISTEN TO ME WHEN I TELL YOU....
Do not use ROM manager to install a custom ROM that is not listed in the application.
I too have bricked my phone this way and I never made a back up. The quickest solution is to actually re-root your phone again by putting it back into download mode.
Look in the forums for instructions. I'm sure others can explain it better than me.
Only use ROM Manager to install clockwork mod recovery.
From there, do it the manual way. It may be more labor, but it is better than bricking your phone.
There are instructions to do that too. If you can't find it just throw me a PM.
Lol I use it all the time to flash roms never bricked

same here. can you elaborate why you think or provide proof that cwm is bricking peoples phones.
I have used cwm on several phones and never had any problems getting to recovery and flashing roms.
you didn't read his post. he is saying not to use Rom manager to get/install roms
Probably because rom manager only wipes data and cache at most. Most of these roms work best with a super wipe
The touch cwm is the worst. Have to toggle signature verification every time, and point it to the internal sd card. Only one brick (soft), though.
That v5 one is notoriously bad on many phones. Just buggy. Not a dealbreaker for me. Is the other touch one better?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda premium
He's probably referring to the roms listed in ROM manager that are not for our phone.I think there is two of them now
I think we're confusing Rom Manager with Clockwork Mod...
Rom Manager is an app made by koush, its a downloadable market app thats included with Cyanogenmod and other roms (on other phones) that makes it easy to install a ROM without bothering with booting into recovery. I used it extensively during my Nexus days, though on the t989 many roms you have to super wipe or do a lot of advanced things you can only do inside clockwork mod.
ClockworkMod is a recovery manager for your android phone, also made by Koush. The classic version that has been on all phones is the non-touch type, latest version is 5.0.2.7. You use the power button and volume rocker to navigate. There is another version dubbed ClockworkMod Touch, latest version is 5.8 something...you can actually navigate with touchscreen in this.
Many people's problems, I've experienced it too, is that CWM touch likes to reboot randomly during crucial moments (during a backup, MD5 creation, flashing a ROM...), leaving the potential for (and in some cases it actually has) bricked phones. Plus the touchscreen navigation is tempermental, its just not very responsive or accurate. Very dangerous bugs for such a sensitive area on the phone.
So do yourself a favor...use ClockworkMod, the originial. Its not going to kill you to navigate with the volume rocker and power button...it actually makes you pay attention and go slower so you don't make mistakes and push the wrong thing. Its easy to install...with Rom Manager! Download it from the market, when you open it near the top there will be a button to flash the latest ClockworkMod. It will be the non touch type.
As stated above, I wouldn't use the ROM flashing functions of Rom Manager with our phone, but it does have an easy button to reboot into recovery for roms without the option in the shutdown menu. It's the easiest way to flash CWM though.
Hope this helps.
You guys can stop "trippin" there are 2 roms under the dl section in rom manager for our phone DO NOT IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM FLASH THIS TO YOUR SGH-T989!!! it WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE!!! Somebody just needs to email koush about it so they can be removed. IMHO dl to your phone or pc and then flash away a superwipe is recommended. I for one am iffy with rom manager because it errors out on restores sometimes.

Holy christ time to flash back to original clockworkmod. Later touch recovery.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
Still rockin the original CWM, never saw all the fuss about the touch stuff. Manually toggling is much safer and reliable IMO
I see that people have mistaken that I was talking about not using CMW. Let me explain. CMW (Clockwork Mod Recovery) and ROM Manager are two different things. You get CMW from ROM Manager. You use CMW to flash ROMs. Some people use ROM Manager to flash ROMs instead of CMW. That's the way you get bricked. By flashing ROM's that aren't on ROM Manager. I hope this clears it up.
I was unaware people still used Rom Manager.....
Thought we upgraded to ODIN, ADB and Heimdall
ROM manager will not brick your phone! If it does get bricked it was user error! Please close this thread
the OP says it bricked his phone, yet then says he flashed back to stock LOL. If your phone is a BRICK it's dead and does NOTHING.

ODIN is really crappy software IMO.. Despite its uses.
Even rom manager has its uses...I wouldn't use it to flash ROMS, because often with our phones you need more wiping than just data & cache, which is all it can do before it flashes a rom. It however it can be used to easily flash CWM and for phones without the option in the shutdown menu, you can use rom manager to reboot straight into CWM.
Guy's, what he is trying to tell you is that there are 2 ROMS that can be dowloaded and installed by ROM MANAGER that WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE. They are listed as T989 roms but they are actually for the International SGS2....

He's accurate about what he described in this thread. I created a similar thread (probably got deleted) yesterday about the same issue. Just because you haven't experienced bricking yours doesn't mean he shouldn't warn others.
I hard-bricked my T989 just simply trying to boot into recovery (non-touch CWM) from the Rom Manager app...and I have read similar issues. The phone goes fcuking dead.

Rom Manager Issue

I have tried updating my rom through Rom manager and I keep getting an error. it says unknown volume path and cant mount backup path. Any assistance would be appreciated.

CWM is clockwork mod recovery.
Custom recovery used to flash ROMs.
Although I don't remember if there's different versions of it for each Nexus.
If this doesn't get automatically moved to Q&A, repost it there.
Agreed, and worst comes to worst, ROM Manager installs a version (possibly outdated) of cwm automatically, so you can always use that. Personally, I'd suggest flashing cwm 6.0.x and using that to manually flash everything from now on. Doing so (and understanding what you're doing) will vastly improve your Android experience, and knowledge, and may help you get out of a tight spot in the future, if something goes wrong with your phone. A little knowledge can go a looong way in the flash game.

GooManager and TWRP is a superior replacement for koush's stuff. Just go with that and you'll never look back. They integrate well together and it actually works just like cwm and rom manager used to when it was 1st released a couple of years ago. Can't recommend it enough. I haven't used a properly working cwm/RM since the moto OG. But if you insist on cwm then I would find a version that has been been modified to function properly. Seems someone released a working touch version but I don't know if it integrates with the RM app.

I don't think it installs "automatically". It WILL choose the correct one for your device but you need to actually choose to install it. (sorry not trying to say you are wrong, just wanted to clarify for the guy
But like someone else said, you might want to download app called goo manager beta. Then open app, press menu, choose install openrecovery script. Say yes. Let it finish installing. Then reboot into recovery via the option in the app. That will give you TWRP2.2.0 as your custom recovery, i used to use cwmr for the longest time, one day i tried TWRP(and goo manager app) and i haven't looked back.
Just one MAJOR tip for you:
After installing a custom recovery, the VERY FIRST THING YOU SHOULD DO IS MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP.(choose option "backup" and let it do its thing) you won't regret making a backup. 75% of time before i flash/install something new or different i make a backup, this way if i don't like what i changed i can just restore and be back where i was. Plus, if anything ever goes wrong it's nice to have a couple nandroid backup files to choose from to recover your device to working condition.

You're right...my explanation was a bit too simplified, I think. I meant that the process of installing cwm is automated when you choose to install it, versus having to manually flash it to the device. And you're 100% correct about immediately making a Nandroid after installing a recovery...having a stock, rooted system is always a prudent fallback. As for Too Manager; I actually just downloaded it the other day, because it gives me quick access to new Gapps whenever I need them, and it's a quicker solution than going to the site. I haven't used it for anything else at all, so I'm unaware of it's full capabilities... I would assume that anything that's hosted on Goo, is relatively easy to find via the app. Unfortunately, most of the JB ROMs I've flashed aren't hosted there. Yet and still, it's a very useful tool, even if you only use it to stay current with Gapp packages.

I fell in love with goo manager and TWRP as soon as i installed them, they are great. Was even able to find the beta versions of twrp2.2 on there. Tons of things are available on goo.you can usually find IMOSEYON lean kernel RC's on there as well. I even donated to not have to wait the 10seconds before download and help them get done new server equipment, hopefully they can get to their goal and we can get very speedy downloads.

Since this has not been closed or moved yet I just wanted to add that goo.im is great! I love that app for my getting downloads and gapps. I do have to say I tried twrp and it was faster but I never got the hang of it. Seemed you could only flash what was in your download folder? Or else I would have to move the file over to download folder to get it to flash. I guess on the dinc2 I got spoiled with touch ext4 recovery. It was a great recovery. I did notice the speed of twrp but decided to go back to my touch cwm since I already was familiar with the controls. Was probably user error on twrp since I see so many people love it on his forum.

T989D Nandroid Backup Size?

Hey all - weird stuff here. I just did a Nandroid with CWM Touch 6.0.1.2 and it took a while, making me think that a lot of heavy duty work was being done. However, when it completed and I rebooted I went and checked the file sizes of the backup files...
My boot.img backup file is 10M
My recovery.img backup file is 10M
my ext4.dup files are this size: cache, 0.5K, data, 1.05M, system, 214.41K.
These just seem a little small to me. Now there is another folder at the clockworkmod/ level called "blobs" that has over 3K files in it.
Does this all sound normal? I've had the phone for only about a month and honestly haven't put too much on it. Most of the apps I've installed are on the SD card etc. Thanks for any thoughts.
i used cwm 6.xxxx hard recovery for a whole 2hrs. My back up was similar and the restore constantly froze for about an hour on the .android_secure restore. I think there is something funny with cwm's new versions. I've been hearing a lot of people have been having problems with it. And it's IMPOSSIBLE to delete that back up blobs fine from your phone, i had to mount to my computer to wipe it.

UGHHH. So no problems at all with TWRP 2.2? I've never used TWRP although I flashed it to my tablet once to try and fix a problem...I guess I'll switch since I'm eyeing CM9 and see you're on that now...
Or maybe just a go-back to 5.xxx? As opposed to my wifi tablet it seems that flashing custom ROMs on this phone (and probably any phone for that matter) can be finicky unless you're using the EXACT right recovery...
EDIT: I just rolled back to non-touch 5.0.2.6. The CM9 OP says not to use non-touch though...boo. Still could consider TWRP but I like the non-touch CWM for now....
nope have no problems with twrp at all. The recommended recovery is cwm for everything lol.
However, i flashed cmx with darkside venom 7 kernel through twrp and it works fantastically. I don't use it as a dd because i watch Netflix or my kids do when we are stuck in traffic lol so that's all i am waiting in for it to be my dd
And while I'm rambling, I've used twrp 2.2 since release and flashed everything through it without a single issue

Which Recovery?

I have been previously using CWM Version 5.xxx for the longest time and decided it was time to update. I have heard people have had problems with the latest CWM and or TWRP, so my question is which version is safe to use? The main thing I am worried about is backups. I tried updating clockworkmod and my backups were messed up.
Thank you for your time,

I've always been using TWRP, after a while using it my backups seemed to become corrupted so I reinstalled my recovery and my backups were made successfully. I was on 2.4.4.0 but I reverted to 2.4.1.0 recently because I heard murmurs of 2.4.4.0 not being the best version.
It seems that recoveries can become corrupt after some time. As for your situation I would try and re-flash your recovery and if that fails, go back to the most recent stable recovery version. I wouldn't recommend switching recoveries only because I heard that CWM and TWRP make their nandroids differently so being on TWRP might make any CWM nandroids invalid for you.
I have also noticed a phenomenon lately that people have been having issues with their recovery.
Edit and Off-topic: I've seen you before. May I ask why that is your avatar? I only ask because my real name is Timon and I've used that avatar before and I've never met another Timon in my life.

To each his own. My experience is cwm works much better than twrp on the S3 wile on other devices I own twrp works better on those. So it's what works best for you.
