Is 8gb on 4g and 1gb on 3g a lot of usage? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I'm just wondering since I was just on Sprint's site checking my account. I never thought I used that much but then again I do a lot of netflix, facebook, pandora, plus many others. I also started tethering recently so I don't want to go crazy and get flagged by Sprint.

Netflix will rack up the bytes pretty quick. Pandora doesn't use as much data as say shoutcast would.
My low side average is a littler over 2GB on 3g. I don't know what the high side would be. Also, I haven't tracked 4g yet.

I would say yes, thats 9 GB of DATA on a phone. How much time left in the billing period, that number may go to 18 GB, lol.

What's the point of having Netflix or Pandora or YouTube in our smartphones if our data usage gets flagged by using them in the first place? And why would Sprint mind if supposedly our data is "unlimited" or so they say.

I'm sure u be ok. I used 34gb in one month and i was ok. Didn't get any text or notice from sprint and this was 3 months ago. Loved Verizon because i used 60gb a month for 8 months and they never said anything lol

I have 14 more days left in my cycle. Its just I never looked at my usage b4 and it freaked me out cuz I remember someone getting booted off the network but I think they were abusing the roaming data which is something I don't do.

Everybody else that responded thanks for your response. I feel a lot better knowing some of you rack up 16 - 32GB with no issue. Now I can worry less. I just didn't want to make it suspicious now that I'm using the hotspot. I was scared so I disconnected 4g and dropped down to 3g to be on the safe side lol.. 3g sucks I'm glad I get good 4g coverage in CT!

Data Limit ?

How much data will i be able to use without getting booted from sprint ?
Since my internet will be down for like another 2 weeks ...
I have already used 2GB ... i normally never touch 1Gig ...
... and i kinda been using my phone to play some black ops ...
want to know if i should stop or if it's safe to keep using it ...
Theoretically Sprint has unlimited data but if you abuse it enough they may care.
Probably hold off on torrents and similar and you should be ok. There are plenty of people who use 20GB of data with out trouble.

If you are using 4g then they don't care. If you are using 3g they may notice after around 5gb
As long as you're not excessively roaming on data and you're not doing anything illegal you're fine.
We've had users post usages far exceeding 5GB / month for multiple months in a row with no problems.
Just be smart and responsible.
There's no need to torrent on your mobile connection.
And really, to be honest, there's not much of an excuse to go over 20GB in a month for any reason.
Abuse leads to locking down and limiting for all.
I use 7-8GB a month every month for the past 2+ years. Never heard a complaint or anything from sprint. You will be fine...
I done from 2-4gb for the last 3 months with no problems. As mattykinsx said just be smart about it

Thanks for noting this mattykinxs.... I think folks tend to forget, in their quest to max out their mobile data, that they run the risk of "achieving" limited data for all. (Not suggesting this is the OP's goal, just something to remember.)
We pay a $10 monthly premium for truely unlimited data from Sprint. This is why I didn't go with Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc. Verizon has a better network but I'm not going to pay $100 a month to be throttled after 2GB.
However I agree, just don't abuse it and ruin it for everyone by downloading 100GB of data in a month via bittorrent or streaming HD porn 24/7
I'm at about 25gb of data this month. Never had issues with sprint wanting to boot me

We have the right to free speech, doesn't make it right to yell the n word in a public place.
Like all things that are "free", "unlimited", "open" they all come with responsibility, with the understanding that abuse will force restriction.
Unlimited data is intended to allow you to use what you need and not have to sit there and say "what's my usage, do I have any left for this month?"
NOT so a person can download 500GB in torrents.
Think like this. Sprint is the third largest carrier. [Verizon has double the customers]
Yet the largest internet home provider has only a third of the users. [Comcast]
Simply put, with excessive abuse Sprint won't be able to continue to afford giving us unlimited data.

Data Throttled Back...Is there a temp solution???

So I just bought my SGS2 last night (coming from a rooted Sensation), and just my luck I hit 5GB after I installed one friggin app! I go back to 4G in 4 days, but I really would rather get my data fast back. Has anyone been able to get their data back by either calling T-Mobile or doing any mod to the phone? Does the "swithcing to 2G in settings and then back to 4G" work for anyone? SO far for me it did not work.
how is i t possible to hit 5gb data with installing 1 app
edit: mayb u had the plan before sgs ii (but it came out 15 days ago so idk how your month would be resetting allready)

I am at the end of my billing cycle, and I had a rooted Sensation that I used the crap out of this month prior to buying the SGS2 yesterday. The one app just happened to be the last little bit of data I had left (bad luck).
Now that we have that mystery behind us is there any solutions?
No sorry man, there is no fix. Tmo won't do anything, supposedly they can't. But none of the old workarounds work anymore. It sucks.

Does this mean if I disable 3G/4G early in the month and use 2G only for let's say 2GB, if I later turn on 3G/4G that I'll still have 2GB of high-speed data?
Or after 2GB are you screwed whether it was on 2G or 3G/4G?
You should be "screwed" after 2gb, whether fast or slow.

Tmo is actually pretty legit, they do "pro rated" charges where if you are throttled, you can upgrade to the 5gb plan, just till the end of the month, and only pay the percentage of the month you used that plan for.
my cable went out the day that this show "bored to death" was coming out, and so i just called Tmo upgrade to a 5gb for the last 3 days of my billing cycle and was able to torrent it via tether.
Then i called them to downgrade when my new billing cycle started, i think i only paid 2 or 3 bucks for the extra data.

Feedback from Verizon users

Hi,
Yesterday I switched to Verizon and rented a RAZR. Today I have noticed that I have used 300MB in less than 24hrs.
I haven't done any streaming or anything like that, just playing around with the beautiful Verizon's LTE (a lot of speed-tests ).
I'm afraid with faster speed I may use more data than what I have normally used on T-Mobile (2-3GB).
Now my question is;
How much data do you guys normally use?
And what plan you have or plan to get? 4GB, 10GB..
Thanks for your feedback.
i average 500Mb a month in data usage. i use wifi when ever possible.
Device: HTC Incredible
Plan: Unlimited Data
i'd imagine a spike in usage switching to a LTE device but i'm not sure how anyone can use over 10GB a month un-tethered.
according to my most recent usage, it shows i'm currently at 48.490GB
although my new cycle starts tomorrow so....
It may be from the initial setup of the device. A lot of information is exchanged to and from Google including backing up and restoring apps etc.

tether yes, as well as i download torrents directly onto my phone via aDownloader.
apparently, Verizon doesn't care how much 4G usage people put their phones through as there's plenty of '4G' to go around. they only care about 3G users using too much data.
Even without streaming Netflix and barely going on youtube, I hit 3-5GB a month just from web browsing and streaming music from Pandora and Google Music on my Thunderbolt. If you watch a lot of videos, I doubt the 4GB plan will cut it.

I'm telling ya dude, you have to try the unlimited data trick:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1370720
i got unlimited data
I'm on 3G, and I regularly use between 3GB and 5GB/month on my Droid X. I don't do nearly as much as I used to, and I hardly have my phone connecting to wifi (even at home). I have an unlimited data plan, but I don't abuse it at all. Even if/when I upgrade to the Galaxy Nexus, I probably won't abuse it. Why should I? People abusing it just makes it that much worse for those of us that don't.

there's no such thing as abuse when "unlimited" is involved. say i have an annual pass at Disneyland or a Season Ticket for the Chargers & I go frequently.. is that abuse?
anyway, this whole 'unlimited/abuse' debate's been brought up many times & I've already argued my side before & realize there's no point in getting into it. just like politics... each side's going to be set in their own beliefs.
so as the hippies say 'peace & love!"

Granted, the Nexus 4 seems to be a very powerful device, but I'm just curious, because there has been a lot of "development is really slowing down" being thrown around, and yes, we have lost some development from some very good devs, but right now we have a lot of good things going on. And as mentioned earlier, $300 price tag with no contract.., not to mention a premium Nexus device? That's a no brainer. I won't be jumping ship, 'cause I'm tied down in my contract with Sprint until June 2013. Although if I had the opportunity, I'd probably do it. If you don't like the service/phone, sell phone, take a small loss, and go to another carrier. Simple.

Granted, the Nexus 4 seems to be a very powerful device, but I'm just curious, because there has been a lot of "development is really slowing down" being thrown around, and yes, we have lost some development from some very good devs, but right now we have a lot of good things going on. This CM10 beta 2 is unbelievable. This feels like a knew phone.
**OR** I could be just completely out of line, I guess I'm just wondering why people are so interested in getting away from this device in particular.
WOW, maybe there's just a good connection is just in my area. 150kbps is terrible....

This phones getting pretty old, many of us (myself included) got the phone in release day, with a new nexus unlocked for 300 bucks with a quad core and 2gb of ram who can say no?
I'm planning on getting solevi (sp?) with tmobile, sounds like a pretty good deal. Can't wait to see how development goes on the n4!

It was $70 for the first $20 for the next phones 3 and 4 are $10 each ( $110) plus $40 for smart phones $10 each. Plus state taxes very each month $5 to $10 so $155 sometimes $160 and more depending on how many apps we buy.

goodbye cruel world (i mean crappy sprint service) !!!

after much debate and 12 yrs of sprint cell service it is time to move on. i always knew sprint didnt have the best coverage but until i started playing ingress, i didnt really realize how bad it actually is. over the past few months, there have been many, many times when i have had full 3g data coverage but data is unusable. this is mainly true for the larger cities and towns around these parts. it is extremely sad that i have to use my girlfriends hotspot to use the data. i saddens me to say (not really) but i have switched to verizon and the service is 10000x better in this area. believe it or not, it is also cheaper with her on my account with a shared plan. i think i saved over $30 a month.
so, i say, good bye to my sprint family, i bid you farewell !!!
ohh and, anyone want to buy a virtually new note 2 with multiple cases and batteries?
We have suffered a great loss.
You da man t3.
But I agree.
Sprint is actually the worst phone service to ever be in business.
I wish I could switch.
I will probably pay the etf and get t mobile.
Tired of this company and their horrible data.

12 years? Damn I didnt last 12 months on their horrible network, sure unlimited data is nice but not when ur getting dialup speeds. It was great having you around though for our phones development. Enjoy the new speeds over at verizon man

kcmo checking in here. great sprint 3g and lte, and wimax for the older phones. we are doing just fine over here. enjoy capped data. personally, on our 5 lines we used 23 gb last month, so i dont think i could go to any other network and not get hit with tons of overages.

I'll be lucky if I surpass 1gb of data with these horrible speeds.
I get a whole 0.44 mb download speed.

Tmobile dude faster 3g service than our lte. No caps like us. Around same price of not cheaper. Gsm goodieness. Better battery life because of Gsm. Wifi calling for free. Once your done paint for the phone your bill drops.
The only reason why we haven't switched it simply because they don't offer us a discount and that is why sprint is the cheaper option for us personally.

of course, because you are playing in sprint's front yard. and after looking at my data usage of the past 2 yrs, i have never used over 2gb so im not too particularly worried about capped data. besides i stay on wifi 75% of the time anyway.

i will never ever ever ever switch to tmobile. they even have lte in kansas city where i live. i still wont go for it.
the unsubsidized phone kills it for me. i buy a phone every year. since i have 9 lines with sprint total, they break me off great deals on my main line upgrade. in the last 4 years i have had the touchpro 2, the epic 4g, the evo 3d, the epic 4g touch and the note 2. the note 2 was the only one i paid for, and i got it for 149 1 month after launch.
why would i want to go back to the dark ages of paying full price for my phone?
even if i did want to do the tmoblile payment option, it wouldnt save me any money. i juust checked the note 2 on tmo. they want 149 down plus 20 per month for 24 months.my bill wouldnt go donw at 24 months. i would be wanting a new phone. there for reupping the payment plan. theyve found a way to to keep you in a contract with out the actual contract and making you buy your own phone. good god damned they are some good hustlers

I've been with sprint for awhile now I had to pay for samsung moment 179.99 and took them ages finally admitting it was a pos. Then gave me an upgrade had to pay for htc Evo shift. Traded for Epic 4g before 30 days. Paid 299.99 for Note 2. ****ty service all the way since from North Carolina to Texas. My buddy pays less than I do for 3 lines on Tmobile and had better service were ever we go.

So I guess this means that Project ROM will no longer be supported by you? Still rocking 2.6 over here :good:
lucky i got the radio shack employee plan $33 a month including 4glte and all...
I live by detroit and every week I find a new place that had really bad 3g now have lte....I have used in this billing cycle aka 17 days 5.08 gigs of data.

You will be missed. Luckily I get good lte and in my bill cycle I pull in easily 25gb just on my phone and about 5-10gb on my three others.
Best of luck :beer::thumbup:

I switched from Sprint to Verizon about 2 years ago and 4 months ago Sprint GOT LTE in my area so I came back. Happy as ever now. Last month used 65 gbs of data. I average about 20-30 down and 6 up.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda premium
I've considered leaving a few times. But I get a 25% discount and have a 6 line family plan. Call quality is awesome, but data is so-so. We're getting more and more lte coverage though. So it is improving.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda premium
I'm not switching any time soon. My bill would be through the roof. Last month, I broke 100GB of data transfer. Since I swtich the GN2 from the Evo4G, I was usually in the 50-65GB; preGH2 it was around 30-35GB.
I don't know any internet at work, so I use the phone. I watch a lot of sports and movies. I have around 6 to 7 hours of dead time to fill.
