So I just bought my SGS2 last night (coming from a rooted Sensation), and just my luck I hit 5GB after I installed one friggin app! I go back to 4G in 4 days, but I really would rather get my data fast back. Has anyone been able to get their data back by either calling T-Mobile or doing any mod to the phone? Does the "swithcing to 2G in settings and then back to 4G" work for anyone? SO far for me it did not work.
how is i t possible to hit 5gb data with installing 1 app
edit: mayb u had the plan before sgs ii (but it came out 15 days ago so idk how your month would be resetting allready)

I am at the end of my billing cycle, and I had a rooted Sensation that I used the crap out of this month prior to buying the SGS2 yesterday. The one app just happened to be the last little bit of data I had left (bad luck).
Now that we have that mystery behind us is there any solutions?
No sorry man, there is no fix. Tmo won't do anything, supposedly they can't. But none of the old workarounds work anymore. It sucks.

Ive done this once, when my vibrant was in repair, i switched to my blackberry 9780 and had them change me to the blackberry plan. It was the same cost internet package wise so i paid nothing, but the blackberry web plan was different so it reset my data, and i was at 6gb and throttled, two days later i got vibrant back and switched back, but my new reset data stayed the same.
Hope this helps

So the way T-Mobile phrases it on their plans page, they say something like this:
Unlimited data for social networking and navigating (up to 2 GB of high-speed data included)

Does this mean if I disable 3G/4G early in the month and use 2G only for let's say 2GB, if I later turn on 3G/4G that I'll still have 2GB of high-speed data?
Or after 2GB are you screwed whether it was on 2G or 3G/4G?
You should be "screwed" after 2gb, whether fast or slow.

Tmo is actually pretty legit, they do "pro rated" charges where if you are throttled, you can upgrade to the 5gb plan, just till the end of the month, and only pay the percentage of the month you used that plan for.
my cable went out the day that this show "bored to death" was coming out, and so i just called Tmo upgrade to a 5gb for the last 3 days of my billing cycle and was able to torrent it via tether.
Then i called them to downgrade when my new billing cycle started, i think i only paid 2 or 3 bucks for the extra data.

Hi,
Yesterday I switched to Verizon and rented a RAZR. Today I have noticed that I have used 300MB in less than 24hrs.
I haven't done any streaming or anything like that, just playing around with the beautiful Verizon's LTE (a lot of speed-tests ).
I'm afraid with faster speed I may use more data than what I have normally used on T-Mobile (2-3GB).
Now my question is;
How much data do you guys normally use?
And what plan you have or plan to get? 4GB, 10GB..
Thanks for your feedback.
i average 500Mb a month in data usage. i use wifi when ever possible.
Device: HTC Incredible
Plan: Unlimited Data
i'd imagine a spike in usage switching to a LTE device but i'm not sure how anyone can use over 10GB a month un-tethered.
according to my most recent usage, it shows i'm currently at 48.490GB
although my new cycle starts tomorrow so....
It may be from the initial setup of the device. A lot of information is exchanged to and from Google including backing up and restoring apps etc.

tether yes, as well as i download torrents directly onto my phone via aDownloader.
apparently, Verizon doesn't care how much 4G usage people put their phones through as there's plenty of '4G' to go around. they only care about 3G users using too much data.
Even without streaming Netflix and barely going on youtube, I hit 3-5GB a month just from web browsing and streaming music from Pandora and Google Music on my Thunderbolt. If you watch a lot of videos, I doubt the 4GB plan will cut it.

i have unlimited data for $29 & 200 minutes for $24. with my work discount & taxes & such it comes to around $53 something/month.
i just have the cheapest minutes as the only time i actually make calls i just use my skype account.
I have an unlimited plan, but still with my OG Droid. I typically see 500-700MB a month. I'm also on wi-fi a lot.
Crossing my fingers for a release on Thursday, I need a new phone...

I'm telling ya dude, you have to try the unlimited data trick:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1370720
i got unlimited data
I'm on 3G, and I regularly use between 3GB and 5GB/month on my Droid X. I don't do nearly as much as I used to, and I hardly have my phone connecting to wifi (even at home). I have an unlimited data plan, but I don't abuse it at all. Even if/when I upgrade to the Galaxy Nexus, I probably won't abuse it. Why should I? People abusing it just makes it that much worse for those of us that don't.

there's no such thing as abuse when "unlimited" is involved. say i have an annual pass at Disneyland or a Season Ticket for the Chargers & I go frequently.. is that abuse?
anyway, this whole 'unlimited/abuse' debate's been brought up many times & I've already argued my side before & realize there's no point in getting into it. just like politics... each side's going to be set in their own beliefs.
so as the hippies say 'peace & love!"
I'm just wondering since I was just on Sprint's site checking my account. I never thought I used that much but then again I do a lot of netflix, facebook, pandora, plus many others. I also started tethering recently so I don't want to go crazy and get flagged by Sprint.
Netflix will rack up the bytes pretty quick. Pandora doesn't use as much data as say shoutcast would.
My low side average is a littler over 2GB on 3g. I don't know what the high side would be. Also, I haven't tracked 4g yet.
I would say yes, thats 9 GB of DATA on a phone. How much time left in the billing period, that number may go to 18 GB, lol.
What's the point of having Netflix or Pandora or YouTube in our smartphones if our data usage gets flagged by using them in the first place? And why would Sprint mind if supposedly our data is "unlimited" or so they say.
I'm sure u be ok. I used 34gb in one month and i was ok. Didn't get any text or notice from sprint and this was 3 months ago. Loved Verizon because i used 60gb a month for 8 months and they never said anything lol

Decided to post this here since this is currently the only phone with 4.0 right now.
I'm using a nexus one with 4.0.3 at the moment and I got a text message from at&t telling me that tethering requires a plan after using the native tethering on the phone. I've used tethering on 2.2 and 2.3 for years without issue, and it just seems strange that this happened after upgrading (but it could be unrelated as well) My understanding was that carriers were not able to distinguish data usage through the stock tethering in previous versions (at least in the same way iOS and WP7 handle tethering), or at least at&t wasn't doing so.
Any at&t users have similar experiences with their galaxy nexuses? I'm using an $30 3G iPhone unlimited data plan on my account at the moment

I think the way they have been determining it with the iPhone in the past was with the TTL on the packets being sent. Computers generally have a different TTL than the iPhone. Maybe they started to do the same with Android phones?
Wasn't Koush's ClockworkMod Tether supposed to do the tethering via a method that was supposedly not traceable by carriers?

I have never really abused it, but my wife and I have been tethering on Verizon well over a year. We have used Wifi Tether for Root on my OG Droid, PDAnet on her Incredible and me currently using native tethering on my GN under Bugless Beast. Never received a single text, email or bill. Granted we only use it combined for about 200MB a month so we might be flying under their radar.

Thank you for that info. I usually use 3G tether for when I'm off wifi on my own tablet but I don't use even 200mb so I (hopefully) will be safe on 4G as well.
careful, with 4G it's tempting to use the full power (700KB/s+) to get some serious DL'ing done

I'm gonna guess you meant $80 since that is where the star key is on the keyboard and you are more than likely on a post paid plan. Yes, Straight Talk is just a virtual carrier of T-Mobile/AT&T. It is prepaid and there is limitations. T-Mobile also has prepaid Unlimited for $50 just so you have options here.
But there is a catch to Straight Talk – unlimited is actually limited. If you start using too much data, you WILL be cut off, and will lose your prepaid time, and they will disable your sim card / phone from working on their virtual network. Read fine print to understand the details of unlimited “web browsing” (that is no tethering, no downloading, no youtube). In a nutshell – Straight Talk will cut off heavy data users after about 2-3 GB in one month, and if you are not cut off right away, there is always that chance. If you use mobile web moderately, you are safe.
By contrast – T-Mo gives you 5GB of full speed data (up-to 42Mbps, which is comparable with LTE speeds), and even if you go over 5GB, they will throttle your speed to 2G – not cut you off or charge you extra.
Straighttalk WILL THROTTLE you even if you consume less than 1gb. I was 2 days into my month when my service was throttled. I called and it was fixed. (had consumed less than 200mbs) and then i was throtteled again the next day. They said i was being throttled and my regular speeds were gonna return when my service plan ended (which was like 27 days latee). I told them hell no and that i wanted the service i paided for. They said i had violated some terms for data usage and that i could not use tethering. Since then ive only used my cell to browse my emails and check news and its being throttled once again. Im moving to tmobile once my month is up.
If you use your phone moderately, you should be fine.

if your talking about straighttalk. its non refundable.
They recently revamped their throttling...
I used to be able to get a reset when I called in to them.
Last week when I got throttled, I called them and they told me I was in violation of the agreement and it would be reset at the end of the cycle.
Called again and the rep did the reset... The very next day I got throttled again and I can't get anybody to give me a reset. (12 calls).
I am thinking that they give 2 resets per refill card or they are cutting off resets all-together.
Has anybody here got a reset since yesterday?
Since ardatdat's kernel there has been no fix for the data counter on this phone. I've given up asking on the dev forums as I'm just ignored. Now I'm seeing the built in data counter option even removed from Jelly Bean. I use data a lot, and I need to be able to monitor my data, but Rogers' app isn't very reliable (constant crashes, needs to be connected to cell network only, doesn't work from 2am to who knows when). If anyone knows a fix for the data counter so I can use a data monitoring app (eg 3gWatchdog), please do tell.

well, I'll give Watchdog another try then. Up till now though, I've seen the same wonky data readings as when I first got the phone.

just curious how much data have you got on your package from Rogers. Only reason I ask is because I had 500megs addon for 25$ and they told me there was 6GB addon for 30$ no brainer I took the 6GB. I never look at Data anymore and use up to a max of 2GB a month.

I don't mind you asking, I've got the 500mb plan, however my bill is already 80$/month because my phone is the original on the plan (family plan of 3 phones, 2 smart, one not smart). Rogers has been raping my family for a while now, since they locked us into a contract for internet they've been cheating us on a lot of stuff. If I were paying my own bill, you bet I would up it, however my mother is currently paying the bill until I take over so upgrading is out of the question.
