Data Limit ? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

How much data will i be able to use without getting booted from sprint ?
Since my internet will be down for like another 2 weeks ...
I have already used 2GB ... i normally never touch 1Gig ...
... and i kinda been using my phone to play some black ops ...
want to know if i should stop or if it's safe to keep using it ...

Theoretically Sprint has unlimited data but if you abuse it enough they may care.
Probably hold off on torrents and similar and you should be ok. There are plenty of people who use 20GB of data with out trouble.

If you are using 4g then they don't care. If you are using 3g they may notice after around 5gb

As long as you're not excessively roaming on data and you're not doing anything illegal you're fine.
We've had users post usages far exceeding 5GB / month for multiple months in a row with no problems.
Just be smart and responsible.
There's no need to torrent on your mobile connection.
And really, to be honest, there's not much of an excuse to go over 20GB in a month for any reason.
Abuse leads to locking down and limiting for all.

I use 7-8GB a month every month for the past 2+ years. Never heard a complaint or anything from sprint. You will be fine...

I done from 2-4gb for the last 3 months with no problems. As mattykinsx said just be smart about it

Thanks for noting this mattykinxs.... I think folks tend to forget, in their quest to max out their mobile data, that they run the risk of "achieving" limited data for all. (Not suggesting this is the OP's goal, just something to remember.)

We pay a $10 monthly premium for truely unlimited data from Sprint. This is why I didn't go with Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc. Verizon has a better network but I'm not going to pay $100 a month to be throttled after 2GB.
However I agree, just don't abuse it and ruin it for everyone by downloading 100GB of data in a month via bittorrent or streaming HD porn 24/7

I'm at about 25gb of data this month. Never had issues with sprint wanting to boot me

I thought true unlimited data is why we are all on sprint, and I hit between 8 and 20 gb with no issues

We have the right to free speech, doesn't make it right to yell the n word in a public place.
Like all things that are "free", "unlimited", "open" they all come with responsibility, with the understanding that abuse will force restriction.
Unlimited data is intended to allow you to use what you need and not have to sit there and say "what's my usage, do I have any left for this month?"
NOT so a person can download 500GB in torrents.
Think like this. Sprint is the third largest carrier. [Verizon has double the customers]
Yet the largest internet home provider has only a third of the users. [Comcast]
Simply put, with excessive abuse Sprint won't be able to continue to afford giving us unlimited data.

T-Mobile Data Speed Cap Question

I have the mytouch and T mobile with unlimitied data plan..Today I wake up do a data wipe install cm7 and when it goes to download the gapps apps from the market it takes forever..I waited 35 minutes for it to download gmail and google maps..I stop the other downloads and try to figure why my apps are downloading slow and why my internet is snail slow..while wondering I get a text message from T mobile telling me I have used to much bandwith for the month cycle and I will have a data speed cap till next cycle....This would be alright but it is not as I can no longer download any market apps ( I can but it takes 30 minutes to an hour )Nor Can I really surf the web.(Took me 25 minutes to get here)Pandora nor slacker work anymore either.
Has anyone else had this happen to them ? Also is there anything I can do to get them to uncap my service..I have been a T mobile Customer for 11 years and think they should do something.Just wondering if anyone else had this problem......
Thanks
I've never had that problem, but then again my max DL per month has been at 1-2GB tops..
Try calling them, but check your bill first to see what they have you clocked at so far for the current billing period... I think they don't impose that on you till you hit +5GB... Good Luck.
I get that all the time, well not this past month because I finally got internet at the house lol. I used it for tethering and alot of internet & email & I would always seem to get it with 2 or less weeks left. I guess it's once you go over 5gb t-mobile slows you down.
I haven't actually had it happen YET, but when I went on the website, I noticed it said I was approaching the data cap... Never saw that before. D;
Thanks..I looked and I am at 5.09gb ..Looks like I am slowed till the 23rd..I dont tether so it must have been from slacker / pandora ..I will have to watch it more next month..
You can download t-mobile's 'my account' app from the market so you can keep a closer eye on your data usage, although, if you have unlimited data plan you can't set an alert for it, even though 5gb is the cap...
I get close to 3-4gb every month and never notice a slow down...I can understand a cap of 5gb to keep the network from being overloaded...I thether and use it to watch HULU and nightly roms so cant see going over, unless something crazy.
... Doesn't make sense.. I'm paying $30/month for "unlimited"... just to get capped?
it does make sense.. u "read" it and signed it. its all in the contract so yes the data is unlimited but once 5gigs is reached in one billing cycle its cap'd to run 2g/edge until the cycle refreshes. it use to be 10gig max but with the recent explosion of smart/data phones the demand for bandwidth and speed are at an all time high. i also learned this the hardway.. now i use wifi anywhere i can to limit my data usage. but even then its still hits 4gigs a month. its mainly a problem for us that use our phones as primary internet.
Use wifi as much as possible. I am fortunate enough to have wifi at work and home and my data usage on tmo's network is ridiculously low for the amount of data I use.

No,
it does not make sense to people that signed an unlimited data plan in 2009, the changes for data cap were made on the new contract July 18, 2010. I know that Tmobile reserves the right to make changes, but they also state that they are suppose to give a 30 day notice. Did anyone receive such notice in data changes? I don't think so. You all can say well is insane to spend more than 5gb of data, but you have to understand that many people use their phone a lot and id their right to be upset when they signed an "UNLIMITED" plan and then is changed without prior notice.
also be aware that T Mobile slows you down to 54kbs. Welcime back Dial Up!!!

like i said, technicaly they dont make it not unlimited.. they just cap the speed, so yes it does make sense.. u signed up for unlimited data not unlimited data at its peak speed, that just sounds retarded. if you signed up before the change then you shouldve requested to be grandfatherd and they wouldve been happy to keep the customer happy. and fyi a news letter and disclaimer was put out for all pre existing customers before the change was made. and even then they didnt change the unlimited part. ill leave this the way i leave any other service provider discussion...., ive been with tmob since sidekick original no color.. not once did they treat me wrong or charge me for something i wasnt responsible for and aware of. i dont recommend but there is an alternative.. AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and even Metro all got u covered.
good day.
I think it ok to note that this is not only a T-Mobile thing, every carrier does this. I know that there is a hack on XDA that is built into the MIUI roms that actually cuts off the signal that your phone sends to Verizon that you have reached the cap so you never see your data slowed down. I do not know how they wrote the hack or if it is possible to do something similar with a t-mobile phone, but it might be worth looking into.

you are paying for unlimited data because you get unlimited data - they just don't guarantee at what speed you'll be able to download at...
I completely understand your predicament! I was in your same shoes.
T-Mobile does not charge extra for anything more than 5gb, but they do make you eat your buffet food through a straw! Now, I remedied my problem with the wonderful program 3g Watchdog, which is free. Set it to your monthly cycle, and you can even place a widget with usage on your screen. Very handy little program.
So yes, I tried calling and talking with the reps, nothing will work. I spoke with managers, and people from India. They can't do anything about it. I couldn't even pay them more money! How ridiculous! But alas, I had to see the bright side. Looking at AT&T or Verizon, you have limits of 2gb or so and then they charge you for anything over that. Screw that! So I figured if I'm downloading 5gb of data in a month, then I need to get my ass together and make my life work for me. So please figure out your **** lol, you'll feel so much better when you do.

That ssssssssssucks!
I went to T-mobile store last week to pay my bill, the man told me about the upgrade discount after a year, when we reached the 4G topic I asked about this slow down of speed after 5Gb and he was like he had no idea, he repeated "Noou, it's unlimited" "that what you heard is for those with plans of certain data limit"
I told him that's what it should be, I said it wouldn't make sense to have such high-speed and still be limited :S
Serously! I'm paying $-freaking-30 monthly for internet access that is like 1mb of speed on this lil' phone, same as it would be using a DSL, why would they put a limit?

Its people like you who make the system slow for everyone. Why do you think att is so ****ty? Its because too many people are using their iphone for everything. Simple supply and demand. Tethering should be used as needed when no other internet service is avalible. I for one like the cap and I welcome it to a charging alternative. Its like any other provider. If you get greedy you should get punnished.

Why should there be such capabilities offered if that's going to bring out risky complications to the system?
That's not reason to call one greety and 'punish'
Is not like one would like to reach a cap just because it can be done and bother other's connections.
Tethering is not as different as using your phone, since our smartphones' web browser is as fully capable as a computer web browser.
Also think of the 4G + What's next??
If one service imprubes why not the others that can prevent issues from the same.
A page loads trice as fast, makes the user able to go on where others would stop, so you see it's not a malicious intention but what the user is led up to.

Can Sprint tell if we're tethering over wifi?

My understanding is that with PDANet, tethering looks like normal data use. Does Wireless Tether or the hacked Sprint Hotspot app (warm 2.2) also show up as normal data use or can Sprint tell you're tethering over wifi?
I ask because apparently AT&T has been sending letters to customers who use MyWi forcing them to either sign up for a tethering plan or stop tethering... Can (would?) Sprint do something similar?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Sprint can't tell unless they use Deep Packet Inspection and see something like "Oh hey, what's all this encrypted traffic coming from Netflix's server?".
As for AT&T, they're just yelling at anyone with high amounts of data usage. Simple as that.
I dont think think they can. Just the other day, I went to the Sprint store and the guy noticed that my Evo "looked" different! He said "man how you do that!" I showed him the Rom and told him about rooting, tether and all. He said " "damm. show me how to do that on mines"....i told about Unrevoked and XDA. NOW Im sure he could be reading this thread!
i'm not sure if they can, but i think they stated publicly that they dont care. their paid one just works better, and on 3g and 4g, while consuming less battery than the rest. this is their response, and i think it works well. self-advertising while not angering devs. pretty good of them.
so once rooted, do i have to download wireless tether or can i use the hot spot app without being charged?

Sprint mainly checks for users exceeding the 5Gb per month for data. Other than that, it is difficult to tell without users feeling that their privacy is being invaded. 5Gb comes up quickly if you are streaming movies or downloading outside the normal browsing or youtube.

Yeah, but it wouldn't be a store employee checking anyway. Either way, seems like they don't care.
My evo was rooted with revoked, but still using the standard rom. I was able to use wireless tether without converting to any other rom. Be sure to use the security features (passphrase and access control) to prevent inadvertent use by others.

Sprint doesn't have a 5gb limit on smartphone plans, that is only on data cards on the 3g network. I just watched a commercial yesterday with Dan Hess stating that Sprints unlimited plans have no limits, unlike Verizon and AT&T.

they dont have a throttle, they just look into it if you pull that much. like somebody said earlier, if you're pulling 8 gigs from netflix's server, there is only one explanation.
Anybody know of any specific examples of customers getting called out for excessive data use or wifi tethering? I assume there would've been an outrage on XDA and I would've heard about it... I don't think it's happened yet.
I get it that Sprint says they're truly unlimited but I have a nagging suspicion that they're eventually going to crack down on unauthorized tethering. Not that that's going to stop me in the mean time!
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I'd have to dig through the contract and T&C but technically speaking wouldn't tethering without a plan be a contract violation? I'm not claiming to be Mr. Innocent here. I've done the free tethering and have had tethering plans. Just seems to me that since we all signed contracts legally speaking the carriers have more of a leg to stand on than we do.

I think with the sale of tmobile to at&t, Sprint will increase their user base with people bailing either one. Maybe, hopefully not, they'll begin to check our usage.
Then again, they'll be moving to LTE. Which means those of us with wimax devices, yours truly, will be left to use our data to our desires. At least I hope so.

I use over 20 gigs a month downloading files(ROMs, files for work, etc) and streaming videos to my phone and have for almost two years. Not once have I been throttled or warned.

So it sounds like the takeaway is that if Sprint wanted to, they could tell that you're tethering, but there is no evidence that they've ever done it or taken any action against customers... Cool.

Sprint is a member of the open handset alliance. They don't care.

I use Slingplayer daily for hours sometimes, then I'll tether my iPad 2 and watch movies from my computer while traveling around via AirVideo. I am currently at 10GB of usage this month which is average, they never throttled me or anything.
I've hit over 12GB of usage regularly with no complaints from Sprint. YMMV.

Feedback from Verizon users

Hi,
Yesterday I switched to Verizon and rented a RAZR. Today I have noticed that I have used 300MB in less than 24hrs.
I haven't done any streaming or anything like that, just playing around with the beautiful Verizon's LTE (a lot of speed-tests ).
I'm afraid with faster speed I may use more data than what I have normally used on T-Mobile (2-3GB).
Now my question is;
How much data do you guys normally use?
And what plan you have or plan to get? 4GB, 10GB..
Thanks for your feedback.
i average 500Mb a month in data usage. i use wifi when ever possible.
Device: HTC Incredible
Plan: Unlimited Data
i'd imagine a spike in usage switching to a LTE device but i'm not sure how anyone can use over 10GB a month un-tethered.
according to my most recent usage, it shows i'm currently at 48.490GB
although my new cycle starts tomorrow so....
It may be from the initial setup of the device. A lot of information is exchanged to and from Google including backing up and restoring apps etc.

tether yes, as well as i download torrents directly onto my phone via aDownloader.
apparently, Verizon doesn't care how much 4G usage people put their phones through as there's plenty of '4G' to go around. they only care about 3G users using too much data.
Even without streaming Netflix and barely going on youtube, I hit 3-5GB a month just from web browsing and streaming music from Pandora and Google Music on my Thunderbolt. If you watch a lot of videos, I doubt the 4GB plan will cut it.

I'm telling ya dude, you have to try the unlimited data trick:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1370720
i got unlimited data
I'm on 3G, and I regularly use between 3GB and 5GB/month on my Droid X. I don't do nearly as much as I used to, and I hardly have my phone connecting to wifi (even at home). I have an unlimited data plan, but I don't abuse it at all. Even if/when I upgrade to the Galaxy Nexus, I probably won't abuse it. Why should I? People abusing it just makes it that much worse for those of us that don't.

there's no such thing as abuse when "unlimited" is involved. say i have an annual pass at Disneyland or a Season Ticket for the Chargers & I go frequently.. is that abuse?
anyway, this whole 'unlimited/abuse' debate's been brought up many times & I've already argued my side before & realize there's no point in getting into it. just like politics... each side's going to be set in their own beliefs.
so as the hippies say 'peace & love!"

Sprint claims they don't throttle??

If you go to Sprint.com, the first promo they have on there is the promotion of their $79 unlimited data plan. If you click on that, it brings you to a page where they are promoting it some more, and on the bottom of the paragraph it says "When you become a new Sprint customer, we'll buy your old phone and you can FORGET ABOUT DATA CAPS, OVERAGES AND THROTTLING while you're on the Sprint Network."
Is this true? Can anyone here, who is perhaps a sprint employee, confirm that Sprint does not throttle? Because I'm a semi-heavy data user (20gb of data usage last month alone) and I can see from the speed differences alone that they throttle. Any insights on this?
As far as everything that has been told to me, the only users we throttle are the heaviest roaming users; this however, is not contrary to their claims, as the "no throttling" claim applies to being on the Sprint network.
Now, I'm sure there are automated tower optimizations that ensure all users on a node have equal access to data, so a disproportionately heavy user may experience varying speeds as part of the "leveling out" action, but i would surmise this isn't intentional "throttling" so much as it is ensuring customers aren't affected greatly by a handful of users.
That, of course, is purely speculation.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
And plus your speed will constantly vary with tower loads and your relative proximity to the closest tower.

Yeah like Squshy has said everything I've read is they will throttle "roaming users" but on network you are fine. And them doing it to roaming users is not out of line either.

What the hell did you use 20GB for? This is why the network is so ****y and slow. People like you abuse data like there is no tomorrow.
Sorry but you should get throttled. Use your Wifi, don't be so cheap. And by the way I click the thanks button, because I really wanna thank users like you for screwing the rest of us out of bandwidth.
I know for a fact I'm being throttled. I used to get between 1.5-2mb down on 3g, until last month when I used 12gb of data. Now I'm lucky to pull 500k. In fact my buddy came over with the same phone and we did the speed test and he pulled between 1.3 -1.7mb. Mine was 300 - 600k. I know 100% I'm being throttled. It sucks hardcore.

sounds about right.
I have heard from an indirect dealer, that if you have service through an indirect dealer than it will be throttled.
In Boise we have a few Sprint indirect dealers. They either sell the phones for cheaper, or the plans for cheaper, but the service sucks.

I just took all of the trottling services out of the services.jar and I am actually seeing faster speeds consistantly. I would say about 100kbs faster download, uploads are about the same.
EDIT: I used speed test and did a series of 4 tests 30 seconds apart on the same server to get my results. After removing the throttling services it was average of 96kbs faster download speeds.
No way to get around being throttled?

Based on the info you provided, all you know for a fact is you two got different speed test results.
You can be in the vicinity of multiple towers and each tower can have multiple carriers/channels. Each tower and even channel on the same tower can perform differently. Sometimes rebooting or updating PRL can cause you to shift to a different tower or channel.
For each speedtest, you need to verify you are both on the same tower and channel. You can find that information in the ##DEBUG# menus.
If you do that, then run the speedtests at the same time, then that could support your theory.
Otherwise it is like saying your wifi is bad, but your neighbors wifi is good (w/o mentioning yours is on ch6 and theirs is on ch11)
wow, 20 gigs is a lot of data on a phone....
Frankly, I hope users like you do get throttled, or have an up charge for that much usage..

Here's a thought.
If a company doesn't want users to use unlimited data DO NOT OFFER UNLIMITED DATA.
Just because YOU can't think of ways to use your phone to its full potential there is no reason others cannot and should not when the SELLING POINT WAS the unlimited data!
I wonder if I was being throttled when I was getting 74k, oh that's right, I use almost no data every month because my 3G connection BARELY WORKS!
I work downtown Chicago, sitting next to a bunch of ATT and Verizon users and watch them actually use their phone!

That's a dumb response. Torrenting from your phone is not a good use of data.
I have 2 exchange accounts, 2 gmail acount, facebook, linkedin, twitter, 2 pop3 emails. I use 2 gigs. He should be throttled.
I work as a sys admin and handle the bills for our data. If i saw someone use that i would not just take his phone, I would make sure he gets fired. Actually a user like that i would make it my goal to make sure he gets fired and report him to all the wireless companies that we have a contract with, just to make sure that he doesnt do that again.
So tell me how am i not using my data to it's FULL POTENTIAL? I can understand 5-6 gigs.
I understand you're a cheppo that wants money for that art degree, but please get MetroPCS. I'll pay your 45$ a month just so there is one less of you.

I hope this same mentality doesn't carry over to all you can eat...
Trust me I've now had multiple friends over, all with the same results. Funny part is when I delete the file data/system/throttle it goes up over 1.5mbs. Then drops instantly to sub 500kbs. Just looking for a way to not get throttled. Might have to call sprint ask. My data each month is usually right around 5 to 6gb of data. As soon as I went over 10gb, I got slammed with throttling. It really sucks.

That's what you feel personally.. But your response doesn't speak for everyone sir... Some people actually use their phone to no extent..or more likely a personal computer.. Weather its watching netflix, streaming media, or tether devices.. Which in take consumes alot of data.. Being that sprint is the only carrier who promotes and campaigns unlimited data.. People come over here with that intent to use their smartphone with that intention.. At the end, you can't blame anyone for using xx amount of gb if the carrier is boasting they provide data with no limitations

Ill take you up on that Metro Offer since you offered
Lets see, I have 4g speeds, a phone that can stream movies and play them on any tv through HDMI, GOOD QUALITY MOVIES range in the 2GB range, stream music, youtube, XDA,. You do the math.
Sounds to me like you're a communist and a pucker butt.

Of course!
No really, apples to oranges here. You took my words out of context. Over eating does not feel good.
I guess you'll never believe that sprint throttles your data until it actually happens to you! I wasn't a believer until now!

Just a heads up

Take a look at this. Hopefully, this won't affect those that upload/download Roms from the various hosting sites.

If you're uploading/downloading ROMs you shouldn't be on data anyway. 200MB a pop is too big to be using data regularly. Wi-Fi is your friend.

Well I was just in a thread where the guy claimed he uses over 2TB of data montly.....That and behavior like that had to be noticed
That is alot of data. I'm always downloading Roms and mods, I never hit 10g. Most of the time I don't even hit 5.

I clicked the link and only saw a Simpsons photo.
How is this even possible, 2TB? My average monthly is ~20gb.
I think Comcast has a 250gb throttle for home usage? So if there's a guy who's utilizing 2TB of data monthly through a mobile carrier, I honestly have no issue with him be throttled down by the carrier.
Yeah I'm all for freedom and all that **** but ****ing Christ and all his angels, 2 terabytes? His account should just be closed and barred from the network.

lol ya I agree with you, 2 TB ???
I guess he is unemployed.
Not cool at all
I think them throttling data on unlimited is crazy for any reason. You guys might for some unknown reason think because he used 2 tb of data they should throttle him but he paid for unlimited data. I have always found it ridiculous how they overcharge for mobile data when it costs companies less than landlines. Less employees and tools should mean lower costs not higher.

Who do you think pays for the guy's use of mobile data to the tune of 2TB? It would be like a person with health insurance going to the ER twice a day, every day. Should it be allowed just because he wants to do it?

I think this is the best analogy i have hear about overage charges. Someone has to pay for it. Just like people that on government benifits think is just free money.... not the hard working people are the people that pay for it

You can always go to verizon and they'll be happy to charge you for all that extra data, throttlin is being overkind for that type of useage. Streaming media is one thing but downloading everything from your phone via torrents should be throttled for sure.

He's paying for unlimited data and he's getting unlimited data, Throttling doesn't mean they're suspending his data service. He can still use as much data as he wants at Edge/3G speed

Your analogy needs amending. Tmo is throttling people doing p2p/torrenting. The person in your analogy needs to be doing something outright dumb or illegal. So let's say it's like a person going twice a day because they keep getting in knife fights in back alleys. At some point their provider is going to cancel their **** or raise their premium to an outrageous amount.
If you're using torrents. You're doing it wrong. If you're torrenting on your phone, then at least school starts soon and I hear 8th grade is killer.
Whether analogy is good or bad, I call bs on using that much data. It does affect other people on the network. I hate inconsiderate assholes with a passion. 2tb in a month is completely absurd especially since cable and internet companies don't even give anywhere near that amount of data for monthly use. So please spare me the whole I pay for unlimited so I am entitled to abuse the network because it's not even close to being justified in the slightest bit
Sent from my SM-N900T using XDA Free mobile app
Say the average user utilizes ~7gb a month.
Then we have this guy who decides, I want to download the entire Netflix library monthly and racks up 2TB of usage. He's using the same amount of Data that 285 people would be in a month.
Say plan rate is ~$60, so T-Mobile as a business to support those 285 people is bringing in $17,100. The cost value that the 1 person using 2TB would also be $17,100. So it doesn't make sense from a business perspective that 1 person paying in $60 is receiving $17,100 worth of service.
I get value and such and getting the most for your money, but they also are banning him from the network, they're simply slowing him down. I don't see an issue here. Also saying average user utilizes 7gb a month is very generous, I would imagine the population passing 5gigs is very small to begin with.
