I cannot answer all your questions, but there is a tutorial in the development section, where you can read about most of these things. If you still have questions afterwards, ask then.

For S-OFF, you should see at the top of hboot screen (Powering with volume button) "S-OFF".
1 GB sd-ext would be enough, i have lots of programs inside, taking just 340 mbs.
For other hboots, please read the first thread about "how to -- root, s-off, hboot etc."
You will use the same way, (recovery-install zip-choose zip..."
Enjoy CM

as quoted above hboot to check your s-off,if you are s-off you have more options available to you,but you can only flash stock hboot roms.if you wish to flash cm7 or cm7/r2 you must flash your hboot to change it...
would recommend ext4 recovery, with this you can partition your sd card, align it,and convert from ext to ext 4 etc.
fastboot comander for flashing your hboot, its more nOOb friendly
please follow all rom instructions to the letter,or you will end up with lagg and freeze issues, read up on the nOOb instructions

You need ext4 to most recent ROMs. 4ext recovery can convert partition formats without loss of data.

[Q] How to change Partition table size?

Hi guys,
I recently installed Oxygen ROM and used the HBOOT image for this specific rom from AlphaRev's websitre, when i S-OFF-ed the phone. However now i want to try other roms like Cyanogen or Redux. The problem i'm facing is that both require to change the partition table size. How exactly can i do that?
Is it enough just to get the Cyanogen specific Hboot from AlphaRev and then flash it? Or there are other steps that need to be done.
Thanks in advance
It's done in the same way as oxygen hboot. Just follow the instructions on alpharev.nl

Thanks TheGhost1233 for the quick response.
I thought that i need to partition the space myself prior to the AlphaRev image installation.

S-OFF:yes or no???

hi guys,i've 2 question about s-off procedure:
1- if i make the s-off,i'll nedd an ext partition on my sd anyway in order to have more memory for install programms or there is some other solution?
2- i saw in the development section that there are some rom only for s-off device, what are the differences with other modded rom?(are more responsive, smooth, or wath)
therefore,it worth to make s-off or not?
thanks
Going s-off will allow you to modify the system partitions in the phone itself. Depending on the ROM you use, you can gain more internal memory from going s-off. I think the only ROM's that require s-off are the new Sense3.0 ROM's and that's because they have you flash custom partitions.
When you run the s-off procedure, your partitions won't change in size until you download the Hboot file that you want and flash it via fastboot or a flashing utility.
Make sure you know what you're doing and understand everything before doing this. It's one of the few things that can brick your phone if it fails.
than aren't the s-off rom better than the "normal" modded rom?
if there are not advantages...i' ll not do the s-off procedure because i' m not sure to complete the procedure in the right way!!!
thank you jordan.harris01
Don't do it if you feel comfortable doing it but I think you misunderstood me. The advantage to it is you get more space on your internal memory so you don't need to rely on A2SD and things like that which can run slower as they are pulling data from your SD card.
Going s-off is the only way you can change the system partition sizes to gain more internal memory.
aaahhhh...ok! now i understood what u mean.thank u very much for the explaination
i'll think about do or not the s-off...

[Q] Q. Confused... need someone to give clear answer...

Hi,
Just getting back into phone mods (used to own windows Touch HD) and recently did the HTC upgrade to gingerbread (which worked fine).
My problem is running out of space all the time... so I followed the instructions to use unrevoked tool (http://revolutionary.io/) to s-off the phone and install clockwork mod recovery.
But what now?
I would initially just want to have the official rom but be able to use the SD card for more space...
I am confused with talk of cm7r2 hboot, which rom to use, will the rom work with what I have and is my phone even rooted??
I don't suppose there is anyone out there that can spell out clearly my next steps??
Thanks in advance
First of all congrats that you have successfully managed to root and S-Off your phone..
Hboot is something that decides who your phone's internal memory is partitioned..for now you have stock hboot..which has partition like the following system 250MB cache 40MB data 147MB
Cm7r2 has system 145MB cache5MB 287MB
this is because requirement of Stock hboot based roms and Cm7r2 Roms are different..
My advice is for now you can used A2sd+ roms which can be installed on stock hboot with the help of recovery.
You will find roms over here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328
If you want basic Gingerbread rom try from Sense 1.9/2.1 (GingerBread): section
Also to use a2sd+ u need to partition your memory card..
you can find all details in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
Hope it helps
Have I actually rooted the phone... I don't think I have???
Oif you read the revolutionary documentation, there is a zip to flash for root
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I think this is what I need... ROM] [20/08] Pre-rooted Stock Gingerbread (3.14.405.1) [Optional Mods]
I didn't use the zip to flash for root as was worried if there were different options...
It is SOOO confusing... need to keep reading!

Stock hboot has 250mb for /system and 145mb for /data. CM7 hboot has 145mb for /system and around 287mb for /data if I remember correctly. In short, CM7 hboot will enable you to install more apps than stock as you can only use the data partition to install apps.
More info about the different sizes of hboot can be found here. alpharev.nl

If you use the stock hboot version, many things will remain on /system partition.
If you use cm7 hboot version, many things of /system will be swaped out to an sd-ext partition.

Since I am new to rooting I d like to ask something myself. I use official 2.3.3 and I d like to root to get Supernova Extreme. But since I can only use the alpharev method I will S-Off my desire. Does this mean I have to use CM7r2 or can I stick with stock Hboot? Which is best for this Rom? Thank you.

Quoting from the Rom page itself.
Hboot Required: Stock HTC Hboot if S-ON, or Alpharev Bravo Stock Hboot if S-OFF (If you havent changed Hboot, dont worry! Your phone is compatible!)

. You cannot use CM7r2 with this Rom. And having S-Off just means you have fastboot commands which is used to flash recovery etc. and have the ability to edit system partition while the phone is booted. It doesn't mean you have to change hboot. You can just stick to stock.
Means If I have 146mb for apps, which mean Im using stock hboot?
In that's the case than I have to download other ROMs in stockhboot version?

Yes each rom has to be flashed according to the hboot specified. If it is for cm7r2 or any other hboot it would be specified on the rom page itself.

To clarify this, not by deafult. Only if you use a big Sense ROM that has a CM7 hboot version.
how to do this?
What do you mean?

All instructions are in alpharev.nl, hboots included. You'll need the usb drivers and fastboot program.

How Do I flash my HTC Desire A8181

Hi, can anyone please help me in flashing a rom to my HTC Desire A8181. I am really frustrated with my phone because it has a very limited build-in storage which is a problem when I want to download app that is really big. Besides, it is really slow. So, I have decided that I want to flash a rom to make it runs faster and have more storage after deleting the default OS.
Currently, my OS is Android 2.2.2, I have tried to update it online but it says there's nothing to update to. I have not rooted my device before. Is there a way to just flash the rom and not root the device. If there isn't, doesn't matter. But can you please tell me the process of it, I really don't any of it, I have searched the forum but I am stuck at the s-off because I don't understand anything further than that.
Furthermore, what rom do you recommend so that my device will be running fast and smooth?
Thanks!
This is the process: S-off > install custom recovery > flash rom
To s-off you will need to use revolutionary. Boot into hboot (turn phone off then boot up using volume down + power). You will see the hboot version at the top. In order to use revolutionary your hboot needs to be 0.93.0001 or 1.02.0001, so hope its one of those.
Once youve s-offed Id recommend installing 4ext recovery. You will also need to create an ext partition (and optionally install an optimized hboot to gain more internal space for app data). Once thats done pick a rom and flash it. I would suggest any of mildwilds roms.

Ok, so 4ext Recovery is to backup my phone? Besides, can you please tell me why do I need to create an ext partition. What is the ext partition for? Thanks! Yes, my hboot is 0.93.0001. BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-ON

You use 4ext Recovery to Nandroid backup your rom - if anything goes wrong while flashing custom rom you can revert back to previous state.
ext partition (recommend 1gb ext4) is primarily for App2SD (can also be done via 4ext recovery).
Consider changing HBOOT to Oxygen r2 to expand maximum internal memory once s-off have been achieved.
I also recommend Mildwild Roms.
Thanks guys! I have successfully rooted my device, flashed the mildwild rom and created an ext-partition in my sd card. Really appreciate all your help!
Can someone please help give me the procedure to do this flashing process???

What do You want flash a custom rom? Then you need to s off which will allow you to flash the rom from recovery instead of unlocking the bootloader that u have to use fastboot to flash rom you can also root your phone if u want to.
