Hi,
I read about the Google Nexus One having a bug with multitouch. It tracks the finger position wrong.
It seems to be a hardware error.
Does this affect the Desire too? (N1 and Desire are close in hardware)
Source:
http://androidandme.com/2010/03/news/is-multitouch-broken-on-the-nexus-one/
Because Desire in not in sale, nobody knows.
N1 and Desire have the same screen.
For me : Both of them have this bug.
Doesnt the N1 and the desire use same capasitive screen to the hd2 as well?
The screen of the HD2 is bigger (4.3"). The Desire has 3.7"
But those 3 devices could have the same model and manufacturer.
I'm not too worried after reading this post by Cyanogen:
Cyanogen's Solution
If this will get it to work pretty much like the droid, I'm fine with it.

Sorry yes.. Aware of that... (hd2 owner) Mean produced in the same way.. I see the nexus one has the same cross hatches as the hd2.

i hope it is not the same with the desire....
Desire has the identical "Pinch to Zoom" touchscreen... :-(
youtube.com/watch?v=7rOgFX1-EwE
This doesnt look good.. (i cant post links)
It is hard to see because of the blurry and spotlight reflections, but yeah the line jumps from one finger to the other. damn.
Here the link again http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rOgFX1-EwE
Why is there always something wrong when a phone seems to be nice
I guess we are just going to see when we get our hands on the device.. No point picking holes in it before we even have it. Im sure i can live with this if the n1 owners can.
PLenty of vids out now that show multitouch in-use, such as the pinching on homescreen and using web browser etc. with no problems. I don't think this will actually effect usability. Also, Engadget ran an article using a different multitouch "measuring" software and it had no problems...wouldn't get all upset about this
Agree,I currently own a N1 and this doesn't affect the pinch to zoom at all. It works flawlessly.
its not a big deal!
The issue appears to be a hardware issue, .. but i think there is away to solve it using a software fix, ... for example instead of the OS takes the data as it is from the touch screen that provides it (which appears to be flawed), another layer should exist, that can process the data from the touch screen and fix that issue and then pass it on.
I am not sure how this is can be done, or what is the effect of it on the over all performance, but I dont think it will be a problem with the Desire hardware specs.
Even with this issue, i dont believe it is a big deal, ... why do you need multi-touch? IMO to zoom in, zoom out (impress your friends and family), which works perfectly. other than that I hardly find any useful applications for it, ... ok maybe some games need this functionality to work properly, but i think i can live with not having games that require multi touch.

Typing is one thing that comes to mind
I am not trying to sound like a fanboy, but the multi-touch keyboard on the *cough*iphone*cough* is awesome. I have owned numerous HTC phones and the difference between say the MyTouch 3G and the iphone keyboard is like night and day.
Now, if there is a keyboard in the android market that is comparable then I will take back my previous statement. I haven't tried Swype, but have heard it is really good.

This feature is not effected by the hardware "bug" of the touch screen, .. if you used both ur hands (2 fingers) at the same time to type and clicked "pressed the screen" on two different letters without moving them than you're completely safe
My point was that the type of multi-touch (mutli touch gestures or call it whatever ...) that is effected by the bug (IMHO) is negligible to most users
and that is exactly why am getting the Desire XP

And what is new in your post?
Apparently Atmel chipsets can support up to 16.. So possibly more can be supported..
But yes, we already know the device supports multi-touch, and supports it properly (unlike the majority of phones which use synaptics still)

That's great! How is the sensitivity? Does it require that 5 fingers are placed on the screen at exact the same time.... I mean, only the worlds best pianists can do thát Ah, here's an idea: create an exercise tool for pianists, guitar players etc.

lol, 16 touchpoints? That's really useful functionality. Multitouching with all toes and fingers at the same time.. yes, I can envision a very interesting app.

God that was funny.
I would like to see a photo of a galaxy S with sixteen fingers/toes/stylus on it at the same time.
I can produce 11 points without the use of my toes or tongue.
That has nothing todo with Froyo...
I have JM5 on it and can also touch with 5 fingers.. I never found any touch app, which supports >5 fingers..
And if you have used the search function, you would find another thread about this..

Impressive I never thought of a limit since typically every multitouch input I use is 2 fingered.

I can produce 21 points if only would it support that much
But what's new about this every SGS ROM can handle up to 5 points
hope there will be an app to get 10 points, just for showoff can't think of something usefull with 10 touches at the same time...

Very responsive and precise !!
Look at a comparisson with the desire:
16 points would be helpful for devices similar to Microsoft surface (not so useful for mobiles probably)
I believe the hardware technically supports "unlimited touchpoints", but somehow (can't recall where I got it from) I've gotten the idea that every added point comes with a penalty in update frequency.
A 5 point limit makes perfect sense for the 4" screensize.

That makes sense. All I know is that it's designed for 16 max (which is a magic binary number). But i would imagine that you are correct..

You're correct, the hardware supports unlimited multi-touch, but I think android is limited atm to only 5 points. I've seen 3 multi-touch apps that go up to 5 points, but not more than that. Multitouch vis. test was recently updated to check for more than 2 points, but it only goes up to 5 now as well.

Hello dear XDA Users ,
Since Yesterday I switched from an Galaxy S to an HTC Desire HD (YAY 4.3 Inch )
I just love this Phone but one thing is making me crazy and I hope you guys can make me calm down:
The Touchscreen is not as Responsive as the SuperAmoled from my old Samsung. This means that when I was trying to use least pressure to move from 1 Homescreen to the other with my Galaxy S it was working. I tried the same thing with my Desire and it has no / less reaction than my Galaxy. I hope I could explain nicely what makes me Mad.
Thanks in Advance for the Replys
PS: This is just my old school English, hope you guys forgive me
PS 2: Maybe it sounds fussy for you Guys but this Phone was expensive and I just want to make Sure that I did an upgrade from Galaxy to Desire HD
They use different digitisers. The one from the Galaxy S is probably more sensitive.

That's right. It's not a problem, like the SGS is better or something. It's just different. Some people, including me,are more annoyed by an oversensitive screen.I for one am ok!
Compared to my Omnia, the DHD is hyper sensitive!
Yeah I agree, sometimes I do not even have to physically touch the screen, and it registers a touch. If Samsung is MORE sensitive, I do not even want to try it
I've used both the DHD and SGS and found them to be equal in sensitivity. That could just be me.

I think dhd is too sensitive. I'd like it has the possibility to decrease the sensibility of the touch... it works without any touch
Anyway welcome on board! This is one of the most interesting and powerful phone on the market.

Anyone keen to play with the Kernel driver for the touchscreen on the desire, to come up with a patch that keeps axis inversion/sticking to a bare minimum? This is the only think keeping me from getting a desire, as I don't want to be held back by hardware. Playing multi-touch Pong and Air Hockey with my friends at school is something I want to be able to do, not to mention the almost console quality games like NOVA. A fix (kind-of) was made for the Acer Liquid By a guy playing with the kernal drivers. All of my developing focus is going into learning Java right now (Gotta start somewhere, right? ) and I do not have a device to test on, so if someone could have a go with the source from the Acer thread or create something themselves from/for the kernel at developer.htc.com would be more than greatful, because I'm not exactly keen on the Desire hd's form facter and buttons, despite the performance. Sucks that all the Desire phones have a big flaw. (Desire - Multitouch. Z - hinge. HD - Size could be a problem, buttons too flush and delicate battery, sim, and SD covers.)
Thanks in advance for your time, and, hopefully, hard work.
Would be very cool, It's practically impossible to play games like modern combat, or any other games where your fingers cross, because of the axis swapping. A fix that, almost, prevents that would be awesome.

Yeh, that very a big problem...

I know it's impossible to truly fix it, but you can get close. personally, I don't care for having more than two finger gestures, I just want perfectly stable multitouch. If someone could create a driver that assigns an id to the first and second touch, and tries to, as accurately as possible, track which registered touch is which, even when the movement exceeds the refresh rate of the screen/sensor, and reads 2 individual touches when they are close/the axises are close. I've been reading up on how the synaptics ClearPad 2000 works, and it reports 2 coordinates for each touch, an x and a y. Shouldn't be too hard for it to not get very confused, right? I'd say, this is a year overdue. But the Desire is still one of the greatest phones ever made (if not THE). This issue still stands between me and it, even though it can barely be noticed in everyday use.
Korntoff, trust me when I say I'm not trying to be rude, although it may come across that way (the internet isn't good at the subtle and nuanced art of conversation) but don't you think it's the height of arrogance to believe you're the first person to have even considered this? It's the 14th of February. The HTC Desire will have been available for a whole year in just two days and you're asking this as if it hadn't dawned on all of these people for almost a year.

Wow...such a simple solution...why have none of us thought of it!!? C'mon man.
so this will never be fixed?
IIRC, this is a hardware issue rather than a software issue. So I don't think it's possible.
i am already regretting buying the htc desire... i am getting it tomorrow.... i didn't know there was that multitouch issue until yesterday... i always thought the htc devices wre top notch as it got such great reviews... none mentioned the multitouch bug... i was planning to play a lot of games... i am so disappointed..
edit: i think the issues of htc desire should be stickied.. i can't believe i missed that issue before i was deciding to buy the desire... it's too late now... i was planning to buy the acer liquid but saw it had multitouch issue... through the forums... i missed it for desire... darn
are there some tips to avois this multitouch bug while playing games or typing on the virtual keyboard?
I tried NOVA and it seemed fairly responsive to be honest - there was a recommended control setup for the desire to help prevent the multi-touch issue - and i am sure i read somewhere a tip was to try and make sure the touches don't line up with each other?
yup i saw it... but are all games configurable like nova?

In The Netherlands we have a 7 day cooling down period after buying something or signing a contract (with most expensive purchases). In those days you can cancel your purchase for free. You should see if something like that applies where you live as well.
thx for the advice but no such thing here... anyway thx for helping.. i got the phone and yes got some issues with the multitouch... guess i will live with it.. apart from that the phone is very good!
i just played crash bandicoot warped on fpse and i mapped the x and o keys on the "search" and "back" physical keys and use the touch dpad... and works pretty good!!! i have reached the first boss level quite easily... if only all android games were that customizable!! would be able to play all the multitouch games properly
My Dad gave me his hd2, and it has the axis sticking issue, but not axis swapping. Less of an issue, but still annoying at times. (Such as playing N.O.V.A (btw, I can't find it on the market, using an apk I downloaded from some site (I hope it was a free app and that this is perfectly legal, but I'm probably wrong.) Is it still on the market? How did you guys find it?) But this phone was definately not built for gaming (adreno 200, anybody?) So it's not that much of a big deal.)
Btw, nexus gingerbread ROM, hence signature.

Without sounding rude, it's not an issue or a bug, the bottom line is the desire dosent have multi touch, it has dual touch, the axis flipping is just a downside to that type of touch panel, it's nothing to do with the quality of htc products, as the screen is behaving as it should. so you really should of researched your purchase before you bought it.

Chuwi Hi Pad Helio X27
Specs:
CPU: MTK6797X Helio Deca Core
GPU: ARM Mali-T880
RAM: 3GB
Storage: 32GB (supports TF up to 128GB)
Screen: 10.1 inch OGS Screen 1920x1200
Camera: Front 5MP, Back 5MP
Battery: 7000 mAh
In the box in a nice foam packaging you can find the tablet (obviously), a charger 5V 2000mA, user's
manual in English and a pin for extracting the TF card port
The tablet has only the basic stuff so no 4G support, no NFC, no fingerprint scanner.
Design:
The tablet has a full metal body. It looks sturdy without any squeeks and cracks.
On the back there is an X shaped design that looks good and adds to the overal gaming orientation.
There are also the speakers (i can't really tell where exactly) but they are loud and clear for a tablet of
this price range.
In portrait position we find in the top the USB port, 3.5 mm jack and the TF card slot
On the right hand side from top to bottom there is the power button and the volume rocker.
Screen:
The tablet comes with a pre applied screen protector that i haven't removed yet (until i find a proper
tempered glass at least). Colors are nice although i think that the dpi of the screen makes icons and
some apps bigger than i would prefer. Viewing angles are great and visibility out in the open is adequate
for outdoor use.
I have experienced some random inputs when scrolling but hopefully there will be an update from Chuwi to solve this problem.
Software:
Out of the box it comes running Android 8.0.0 with 5 june security patch.
The feeling and actual experience is good. There is some occasional lag here and there but nothing deal breaking.
Gaming wise i tried Asphalt 9, Real Racing and Need for Speed with the same results.
Fully playable but seems to be running in low resolution (maybe because of the low DPI?)
Camera:
Nothing special here from both. Good enough for Skype calls maybe.
Battery life:
It seems to get 7-8 hours of normal use but i will test some more and come back with an update.
Other:
The device is not authorised so no Netflix on high quality
Conclusion:
A decent tablet for the price. Nice screen, loud speakers and adequate performance on daily use as well as in gaming. Battery life will get you easily a day.
There is the issue with the touch sometimes and some occasional lag here and there but nothing dramatic.
Gaming Asphalt 9

Keeping an eye on your thread, this tablet is ridiculously cheap at the mo. The only thing I have seen that's a worry is the input/touch issues which you also mention. Hopefully something that can be fixed in an update though.

In everyday use you just notice this sometimes.
But if you try to write something as I do right now from the tablet, there are some hit and miss clicks that are noticeable.
Hope this is a software issue too.
Great tablet overall for the price.
Good review freaktech. I've had my HiPad a few weeks, I completely agree with everything you said... great tablet for the price, but a few things that can hopefully be improved with s/w updates.
That being said, one thing I think would really help would be if we could get root on this thing. I'm assuming the governor is set to interactive but I think changing it to OnDemand would make the performance even better. And maybe we could also change the DPI setting?
Unfortunately I'm not sure how to start trying to root it... I don't know if this is helpful to others, but Chuwi has posted the Hi-Pad rom image, driver and flashtool:

Root and custom recovery is something I'm looking forward too.
I found a topic somewhere here on how to compile twrp for helio CPU.
I'll give it a try. But still we need root to install it am I right?
I'm reluctant to try one click root solutions.
Good to know that we can go back back to stock if something goes wrong though.
I guess flashtool instructions are the same for all mtk devices?
I've added a video playing asphalt 9 on the first post (seems to be the most popular game a the moment) sorry for my bad filming skills.
I'm not sure about the whole root/TWRP thing either, it's a chicken/egg situation for me too. I've always just followed other people's instructions on how to root and install TWRP, I've never sorted it out myself.
Since we've got the stock image available, my understanding is that trying one-click recoveries should be okay but hopefully someone with experience will chime in.
I received an OTA update today.
No changelog though.
I got it too. Too bad there's no changelog, but at least it shows they're fixing things.
Something potentially interesting I've noticed - if you run the Google "Find my device" app, it identifies the HiPad as a "Hi9 Air". I'm guessing this is because they re-used software from the Hi9 Air, but I'm wondering if it also means the HiPad could be rooted using one of the Hi9 Air root methods. Anyone with rooting experience willing to give it a shot?

It's been a long time since i used my English skills and maybe they are a bit rusty.
The touch issue i'm experiencing is more of a hit and miss rather than a phantom touch.
For example let's say you want to type the word "chuwi" and you actually type "chui" or "cuwi".
[edit] I added a photo to be more clear. You just have to trust i'm not that bad in typing
Now for the lag part the tablet is smooth 99% of the time but here and there there is a frame drop mostly in the ui in my experience.
I'm a bit hypersensitive with that kind of stuff but i did noticed it and thought to mention that too.
It's a budget tablet after all
I use the tablet daily with no problems.

I use mine daily without problems as well. Really good tablet and it'll only get better with root.
In case it helps anyone, I just came across this tutorial on downloading the latest Chuwi HiPad USB Drivers and MediaTek driver:

I was just reading the Chuwi forums, and according to their forum correspondent "Emily", the OTA they released the other day was intended to address the touch sensitivity/accuracy problems (she wasn't very specific though). Personally, I do think the touch sensitivity has improved a bit. Anyone else have an opinion?
Can anyone test the new update?
I'm using it right now (and have been for a few days). I definitely think touch sensitivity has been improved. Anything else you're wondering about specifically?

hope so,
Mine is on the way, Now I am only concerned with Netflix, It was one of the reason I ordered this.
As freaktech mentioned, you can find various apks (on XDA and on the web) that allow HD Netflix on non-certified devices. I haven't done it on my Hipad yet, but I used these apks to install HD Netflix on an Android box in my living room. Piece of cake (just download and install) and works great.
