[Q] How to manually program - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone have a good link or how-to for manually programming the Incredible? My phone won't call/text/connect to mobile network, but everything else (wi-fi, GPS, all apps) work fine. I think manually programming could fix it, but it seems like some murky territory if you're not absolutely sure what you're doing

Set up only involves you dialing *228 and follow the prompts to either activate a phone or update your roaming. I believe the only other activation method involves Verizon doing this in store.

It depends on what Rom you are using and what EPST but I can type ##000000# and able to change MSN and MSID(MIN). Then I can also type ##PRL#, 000000, which allows to update the PRL. With this Voice and Text should work. Only other thing that might need updating is SID which I found after typing ##DATA#, edit, 000000, in Advanced.
Again, it depends on the version of EPST you have on the phone.
The other way to manually program would be using QPST on your computer and typing ##DIAG# on the phone.
Finally some roms require to press Call after the # codes.

I tried to program it with *228 but my phone couldn't even connect to the network to do that. It can't connect a call at all.

Gotcha. To add, you must perform *228 while on a Sense ROM then revert back to AOSP. I'm not sure if you did that or if that would help in this case. That said, FlagMax's magic is way more in depth.
You mind my asking, when and how did this issue arise?

I had unrooted and flashed back to stock RUU when I tried the *228. Still didn't work.
Was a very strange situation. Phone was workign fine Saturday night when I went to bed. When I woke up Christmas morning, the screen wouldn't turn on and there was no LED indicator when I plugged it into a charger. I pulled the battery a couple times, but it wouldn't turn back on until I had pulled the battery and wiped the contacts off. After it booted back up, I wasn't able to call/text, but could still connect to mobile internet and wi-fi. I figured it was just terrible reception at my parents' house, but on the drive back the next day I lost mobile internet too and wasn't able to do anything with it since.
No clue what happened... but it all started with that battery problem. Go figure.

that's exactly the same as my problem.
I experienced a few reboots on the past week and suddenly it disconnected from network.

[Q] Sprint updating?

When i tried to make a call this morning my calls wouldnt go through. i wouldnt get calls either. i would also get these error messages when sending texts. Unable to send/receive a text message.
SMS Error
Radio Interface Resource Shortage
Details
Cause Code:64
Error Class:2... my phone was perfectly fine yesterday. i would also get stuck on the call screen when i end a call. could this be on sprints end?
It happened to both my wife and I, try updating your PRL that's what trying to update.
updated but its still getting some sms errors and some calls are still not getting thru
I'm in Myrtle Beach right now and it's terrible. Calls take about a minute to go through and texts won't send. Data browsing is painfully slow also.
are you rooted? and do you have a X over your signal bars?
yeah same here and calls are going to my voice mail. instead of the sms error it says network not responding.
yeah im rooted. my signal goes in and out. i update prl and reboot and everything works for about five minutes and then everything goes wonky
If you know your MSL number if not search the market for " msl reader " then go to your dialer and type in ##3283# then press edit mode, type in your msl number/ password then press date profile, press menu, and hit restore ( don't worry this won't erase anything ) let it do its magic .
theres two options when i go into edit mode. mobile directory number and msid. which one do i edit?
Once you're in Edit mode, go to data profile and just hit your menu button and select Restore. and let it reboot and it should set up your data like new without you losing any of your settings.

I think you have to be running a sense rom but I am not entirely sure.

[Q] Can't get Epic flashed to virgin >:(

I swear, i've done it all. I've flashed the donor intercept's "numbers" if you get what i'm saying....
got my AAA and HA passwords,
got my username and all that info inputted in QPST, wrote to phone,
phone restarted.......
*me getting excited*
open dialer on epic to make a test call...
rings once and then "YOUR ACCOUNT COULD NOT BE VALIDATED!"
checked settings, rechecked settings,
is there some type of provisioning i have to do?
do i need to call customer service and "refresh" my data...
the intercept still works fine, too...

We are going to need more info then that. Your AAA and HA user name name and password have nothing to do with getting calling to work just data. Make sure you entered the correct meid in QXDM and that u also put in your phone number and mdn as well in qpst.

i got calling/texting to work, finally....
my msid was different than my actual phone number and i didn't realize that.
changed it in ##msl# and voila, calls and text!
now i just can't get that data working, i've manually entered all the usernames and such in ##data# but that didn't work.
so i went the route of using qpst, data still doesn't work.
weird quirk though is that it seems the settings in qpst aren't sticking maybe? i'll write the PPP box to phone and then when it boots i'll read it to make sure it's right, but it will be gone.
Additionally when i try to input the correct settings in the advanced tab on ##data# i cannot get them to save. I'll exit data programming mode and it will all just change back to <not set>.
that may have some problems with it.. i can try flashing a sprint rom again to reset the data settings to start fresh maybe?
again i appreciate any help you can give me because i've been working on this for damn near 4 days!!!!
edit: i've attached my list of important things to have while programming, most of which was pulled from data programming on intercept.
i trust that you won't try to steal any of my number and what not, if it's possible.

i'll give it a try now,
another weird thing i found is that if you want your AAA password just open up ##data# on the intercept and click on the password like you're editing it, long press it and hit select all, and then turn the phone sideways like landscape mode and you can see the passwords in plain text! that's how i got mine anyways... seemed easier than reading through the adb log.
edit: TO BE CLEAR that way of getting the AAA password ONLY works on the intercept running 2.2 STOCK. It may or may not work for you, if it works for you then we can probably assume it will work for others who have problems with adb like me.

if i change it back to mdata.vmobl.com i lose the 1x icon and 3g and back to nothing...

Start over fresh? Why Certainly! Odin EL30 Stock Tar. Have Repartition checked and make sure you have efs clear selected as well.
WARNING!!!! EFS clear is going to wipe that phone clean, you'll have to re-input the ESN (I think) and prl, etc. Least that's what I believed happened to me last time I did an efs clear.

i will do that once i am off work!
you guys are a lot of help, and i appreciate it.
i just want to start off fresh because i was about half asleep when i entered all the numbers in and i'm about 99.5% positive i funked up a number somewhere that shouldn't have been effed with.... i'll let you know if it works!
well! reflashing to stock fixed my problems.
followed your guide and entered all the settings verbatim.
the 3g icon is up, data is working .....very slowly.
this leads me to believe that it's not actually 3g and just 1x.
according to mobile speed test i'm going at about dial up speeds (not even 1x) with 3 bars of service.
any idea??
got it!
it just fixed itself when i cycled data mode on and off, thanks guys!
getting solid 1 mbps downloads with half that for uploads in my area of NE!

[Q] Hands free activation failure

Greetings!
I recently rooted my Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II with a toolkit, and it seemingly deactivated my phone, so I couldn't make calls, send text messages or use 3G at all. Every time I would reboot my phone, It would try to do a "Hands Free Activation" and fail.
Since then I have unrooted my phone and restored it to stock, but it still seems deactivated. I can't make calls, send texts or use 3G, and I also still get the "Hands Free Activation" and it still fails every time.
Thanks in advance for the advice.

Ok, so I used the tar file you used, and it no longer attempts to do the hands free activation.
I seem to be recieving a few text messages, but it seems delayed and sparatic. Phone calls made to me go straight to voicemail. Phone calls I make go through occasionally. I can use 3G for internet access.

Have them try manually programming your phone. They will need you to dial ##MSL#, then tap EDIT, input your MDN (Phone number), MSID (Network routing number) and then select DONE. The phone will reboot, but all of the correct info will be stored in the phone and it shouldn't have an issue with hands free.

With HFA you shouldn't need manual programming as long as the MEID is still set.
Try ##72786# (##SCRTN#) to force HFA and allow the profile/PRL to update.
Also run the MC2 One Click with the change ID in the name (number) to update everything if not already on MC2.
That should get you going again.
If you see HFA pop back up let me know.

That was the issue he was having is that HFA wouldn't complete, and so his phone wouldn't fully provision. If he manually programs then it can skip HFA and should work without it.

In my experience it's not that easy anymore. Manual provision may not allow a profile update, at which point you now have to manually key in AA/HAA keys. And that's not even addressing the LTE SIM.
In this person's case a MC2 one click and the carrier partition fix ought to have done it either way. Feel free to research what we've done so far on related issues if you question why I gave this answer. I have older threads explaining the problem.

First I'll preface this with the fact that I'm not doubting you in the least, you may be correct, and since OP hasn't responded I don't know. Your thanks meter is through the roof, which tells me that you know your ****, so I'm not questioning you. What I'm trying to do is explain it from the way I see it. I have to deal with issues like this at last 50 times a day. People call in because they can't get their phone to provision over the network and I have to troubleshoot and get it working. 999/1000 times it comes down to a provisioning delay or an issue with service. Without knowing the specifics I can't say if that's the cause of his issue or not. What I can say is that I can count on one hand the amount of times I have had to open a CTMS ticket for provisioning. If I can't get SCRTN to work, then I refresh OMA and power cycle, then try again. If that doesn't do the trick then I manually program. When the phone comes back on I have them wait at least a minute, ensure that there is signal and a 3G/4G logo, and have them test. 99.9% of the times the phone works. That's why I suggested manual programming, And then if there is an issue with PRL I'll have them connect to wifi and update again, but rarely have I had an call where not having a current PRL meant that the phone wouldn't provision. Unless he went and manually wrote an archaic PRL in himself then anyone that is already loaded in should work just fine.
TL;DR: Basically, what I'm conveying in this wall of text is that manual programming negates the need for HFA. They both do the same thing, but SCRTN trusts that the network is working, and then automatically updates the PRL, Profile, and Firmware, all of which you can do manually once the correct MDN and MSID are in place.

Getting No 3G/4G.

Hi,
It started yesterday afternoon, I am not getting any 3G/4G signal on my Note 2. I thought it maybe a "Sprint tower down" problem but when I got home my wifes (unrooted) phone had no issues. I've tried turning airplane mode on/off, restarting and pulling the battery. Nothing worked.
Late last night I got 4G back and I thought everything was ok. But this morning it was back to no data.
My Mobile network settings:
Data enabled (checked)
Network mode: CDMA+LTE/EVDO
When I go to Network operators it gives me "error when searching for networks" and Sprint is not on there.
When I press "choose automatically" it just sits there saying "automatic registration.
I'm on ParanoidAndroid version 3.99-RC2
Kernel: 3.0.64-CM-gbc8f4c9
PRL # 55015
Before I flash back to stock does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Randy

I was thinking of that. But I wasn't quite sure how to do it on a AOSP rom. It's easy on a touchwiz.
I ended up factory reseting and flashing back to the previous version of the PA rom. It's working for now. Maybe just a bug in RC2?
Thanks for the suggestion.
Not sure how well this works with Rooted phones, but try updating your data profile in Setting>System Update. If that doesn't do it try dialing ##72786# and let it go through SCRTN. Again, not sure what effect this will have on a rooted phone, but it's worth a shot. If all else fails call customer care and have them refresh SPS, GEMALTO, and OMA in that order.

Hmmm, I just tried it on mine, but it didn't work either... I wonder if it's because it's a non TW rom, and maybe the TW roms have it built in by samsung for sprint. I'm getting ready to flash back to a TW rom, I'll report back with details, for science.
Edit: For science. Flashed digiblur, tested SCRTN, it worked. HFA, PRL update, all ok, phone rebooted and works without issue. So, if you are keeping score, SCRTN works in TW roms, but not AOSP, or so it seems.
If you guys can, back up your current AOSP build and flash a stock one click. Current "safe" PRL is 2006 so once you get on you'll probably get that pushed to your device. Bet that will fix your problems. Then simply restore your AOSP backup.

[Q] Cannot update prl after activating service with Straight Talk

Before I describe my issue, I'd like to state that I have searched high and low for answer to no avail. I am using a Sprint Galaxy Note II that has been upgraded to 4.3 stock. It was unrooted when my issue began, but I went ahead and rooted it to try and help my problem.
Two days ago I signed up for Straight Talk Bring your own phone. I entered the provided code which took me to the hands free activation. The activation proceeded successfully (my phone said success) until it forced a prl update. It says it fails (each time it tries the prl update) and immediately reboots the phone. Once booted the activation attempts again and repeats over and over unless I cancel before it gets to the prl update. Strangely enough if I try to make a call it says my phone has not yet been activated, and yet a few times after waiting I can make calls (verified they are coming from my new number), but no data functions. If I then try and complete the activation (the incomplete notification remains), I'm back to square one.
Straight Talk techs have assured me that my phone is active throughout their system and the sprint towers are having no issues. They say other Note II's have been successful. My phone is communicating with the towers as I get the LTE icon during activation.
As an experiment I activated a Samsung Galaxy 3 (never rooted) using the same method and it went through fine. It updated the prl and is now working like a champ. I am now at wits end with my Note. I have faith that all would function if I could get the prl to update and I haven't a clue how to get there from here. I have also been unsuccessful obtaining my MSL even after rooting. A little history on the phone is that it was active with Sprint and it was rooted at 4.1. I returned it to stock to take the 4.3 update.
If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Before I describe my issue, I'd like to state that I have search high and low for answer to no avail. I am using a Sprint Galaxy Note II that has been upgraded to 4.3 stock. It was unrooted when my issue began, but I went ahead and rooted it to try and help my problem.
Two days ago I signed up for Straight Talk Bring your own phone. I entered the provided code which took me to the hand free activation. The activation proceeded successfully until it forces a prl update. It says it fails and immediately reboots the phone.

If it's active in their system and if their systems are compatible with your phone then you should be able to update the profile and PRL with no issues. Make sure you're connected to WiFi. There isn't much else you can do short of cloning another phones information onto it but then you won't get LTE. Are you sure it's active on their system and not still attached to Sprint?

It is active in their system and unfortunately I don't have another phone to clone. My prl says 2010. It will not update over wifi or LTE. I've tried factory resets (before I rooted). I'm sure it's something with my phone. I just can't pinpoint it. The only progress I have made is that I did manage to extract my MSL. The reps at straight talk said my phone would use sprint towers to activate. Also I'm wondering it my note would use the same prl at the S3 I activated. Thanks so much for trying to help.
You can do *22804 and it should update the prl

Although I may be completely wrong here, I can only go off of experience saying I haven't had a problem updating the profile and PRL or getting service from a "flashed to" carrier, by replacing the original carriers settings. I've tried NUMEROUS Sprint and Boost Mobile PRLs on my phones (I've had a EVO 4G, S2, Nexus, EVO LTE, and Note 2 on Boost...yeah I change phones a lot) and never had an issue getting Boost Mobile service since they use Sprint's towers.
First off, is the Note 2 still active on Sprint? CALL Sprint and verify this. I know if I try to activate a Verizon iPhone 4 on Page Plus that it'll default to Verizon OTA programming and pull that data when I WANT it to pull PP's OTA data via *228 (or *22890). Same thing may be applied here (except with update profile instead of *228). Secondly, is the phone's MEID the same as what you registered on the account? Although I think the L900 is set to show the OEM MEID in settings, I've seen some US Cellular (and maybe Verizon) phones that have shown the OEM MEID in settings but when hooked up in diag mode through the computer showed the real MEID which was completely different. Just something else to consider to make sure you cover everything!

I tried and it said the number or code is invalid. I will try again when I have a stronger signal. Uploading screenshot of phone connection specs. They look abnormal, but I am not an expert. I am running sprint stock 4.3 rom that was updated with kies. It is rooted but only after issue started happening. The phone number shown is not a number that I have ever had with Spring of Straight Talk

MMM I think I know what's going on here. You need to change your MDN and MIN to something other than 000000xxxx. I think that's forcing a HFA loop every time you boot the phone. Are you familiar with CDMA workshop or DFS CDMA tool? You'll need one of these to possibly fix your problem. Essentially, i think your phone needs to update the profile. This wouldn't be a big issue but I think HFA is strictly sprint and update profile won't work until you get rid of the HFA nag without disabling SprintDM. Check out the two programs I mentioned.

This might just work. I have CDMA workshop demo version but am unsure how to conduct the procedure. I really need to get it fixed because now hubby is in the hospital and has the s3. This is my only means of communicating with him when I'm not there. Wish I had the funds to just buy a note 2 that is unlocked but that is not an option right now.

If you're on a CDMA network, meaning your carrier didn't give you a SIM card, then having an unlocked phone does nothing for you. Straight talk might be CDMA and GSM though, never looked too much into it. Anyway, you're going to need to dial ##DIAG# in your dialer to bring up the "port" menu. Leave it on PDA and select Qualcomm USB settings or something along those lines. You should be at MTP. Switch it to DM+Modem+ADB. Plug your device into your computer. In device manager you should be able to see which port your computer assigned to it. If you have to, change the port number to be COM25 or under. Go into CDMA WS, connect to the port, send the password: 2012112120131219 and your SPC. Go to NAM1 and read. You should see your MDN and MIN are kind of zeroed out. Replace them with something other than zeros, like MDN: 7737777777 MIN: 3122222222. Reboot your phone. HFA nag should've gone away (if you're on 4.3). Now you should be able to update your profile WITHOUT having to go through Sprint's HFA, and after it grabs everything it needs, you should be on Straight Talk.

Tried the above but got lost on MIN. (is this the same as MSID?). Didn't find MIN anywhere. This is what I did try and it may have worked..so far, so good. I changed my number via the Straight Talk automated. I then tried the HFA which failed again, so I went in and maually programmed my username, MDN and MSID. I then tried mms and making calls and it worked. I then used root explorer to get rid of HFA by deleting the Sprint update apk. The prl 2010 remained and Sprint Zone says it is current. My only issue is that internet does not work though mms does. That is an issue I am now going to try and tackle. For the record, internet also does not work on the S3 that completed the HFA and prl update successfully. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix that I am open for suggestions. Thanks for your help on this. Please see screenshots..
Yes MIN is the same as MSID. You needed to program the numbers through a CDMA flashing program to get rid of the HFA nag. Now that you've programmed them through the phone...I'm not too sure how you're going to deal with the HFA. Yes, you disabled it, but you also disabled the ability to update the profile which is what you need to do for your data to work...
Success!
Success!! Here's what I did...Found an old Sprint prl file and copied it to sd card. Flashed Digiblur Rom which includes ability to write a prl file in settings. Used root explorer to go in and rename Sprint Update apk so that it would temporarily deactivate. Updated prl to the one on sd card through Digirom. Went back in and "reactivated" Sprint update apk. This activated the HFA immediately and promptly updated the profile and prl to the correct one for sprint (since straight talk BYOP uses those) and voila.. voice, mms and internet are now working perfectly. The issue seemed to be that HFA was changing MSL to 0000006503. Simply correcting it was not enough. I had to roll back the prl to make it update correctly. It updated it back to the 2010 that it was before and updated the profile as well. I like Digiblur Rom but decided to go with Paranoid Android rom instead. I'm loving it. May try a 4.4 next. I'm running Kit Kat on my Nexus Tab and I like it. Until this fiasco, I hadn't rooted my Note 2. Forgot how much fun roms can be. Used to play with them all the time on my HTC Evo. See screenshot of my success; unfortunately showing 3g in screenshot. LTE is spotty in my area so at times I'm reduced to 3g inside my home but I'm on wifi at home anyway.

Im happy this worked for you. I believe you have to have an older Android OS to make the trick work. My question is, how can we make this work with a 4.4.2 OS? Much thanks in advance.

My community rom (4.4.2 tw) has the ability to write prl via ##data# then view knot edit).
Sent from my SPH-L900 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Samsung Galaxy S3 (L710)
On both of my L710 (S3), the write PRL option was not showing. So ##data# didnt work for me. I had to install this app:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/32jc7i0w2fa2oxw/PRLWUnhide_S3_MA6.zip/
This made it so I was able to see that function.
Here are a bunch of PRL files. I believe the latest is 25018. If its not listed there, just do a search for the zip file:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35576100
I was able to update the Profile and PRL after writing the TEST.prl file.
However, that didnt seem to solve my problem.
No 3g/4g, with HFA loop, with FreedomPOP as my provider (SPRINT MVNO).
I get a "unable to establish a data connection" error MIP:67 on one of the phones when trying to activate.
On the other phone, I get the notice to call customer care (SPRINT).
I believe this to be an ICCID issue, but I cannot confirm this:
https://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/143514
Pull up your dialer, punch in ##72786#. Let the phone go through its little process, then try to update prl and profile.
I am currently using a sprint note 2 on straight talk, had the same issue, and that's what I did to fix it.
