Was it really necessary for the phone to be this long. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Just wondering if anyone with some design engineering under their belt would know if the Galaxy Nexus had to be as long as it is. As much as I want this phone, it just seems like it has a bit too much dead space on top and bottom. Especially the bottom. I did quick chopshop to give you an Idea of what I mean. It seems like a good 3/4 of an inch difference.

They're not making it tall just for fun. There are components below/above the screen that couldn't fit anywhere else unless they made the phone thicker.
I see what you're saying, but I'm pretty sure they would have made it shorter if they could've. But they weren't going to do it if it meant it would be thicker or wider than they wanted.

And that solves that. Thanks.

I'm hearing you.. HTC titan is 4.7" screen and is not as tall.

Yeah it was necessary for the phone to be this long. It also looks much better than the fat variant in the OP. I absolutely love it.

For what it's worth, the longer version does look better too.

Love the size... but I did make a widget to pull down the notification bar so I don't need to stretch my thumb lol

its widescreen, and no theres hardly any wasted space, far less than a normal phone especially at the bottom!

I also wished it was smaller.

Underneath soft buttons is a notification lamp. The top has the speaker, sensors and camera. The aspect ratio of the display is 16:9 physically, not just in pixel count, preventing distortion. I'm not seeing any wasted space unless you want a smaller screen or a new design without the front facing components. Something maybe that's a slate and requires a headset or maybe a speaker for your ear on the back instead of the front?

I like the nexus the way it is. Yes it is a lottle tall and yes they couldve trimmed height and added depth or girth but it is great the way it is. My thumb is getting stretchy.

Agreed. Besides, I compared it to my DX and it's essentially the same height, slightly wider, but best yet...thinner. FTW.

no - i could throw it up there: just need to make a better looking icon tomorrow.
i was going to build a nexus prime power widget: drop down menu, short cut to network settings, flashlight etc.. but i don't have much time.
Tomorrow i'll throw up the widget and an app icon (so you can shortcut it on the launcher if you wanted to)

That's a pretty good idea. I wish, however, that someone could just make the stock ICS launcher have swipe actions in the dock (much like Launcher Pro). A simple swipe on the App Drawer icon to bring down the notification menu would be a blessing.

if you look at the bottom though there is actually enough space for capacitive buttons. i thought the point of on screen buttons was to avoid any bezel at all.

Soon enough, we'll have custom launchers with swipe actions that can pull down the notification bar. I used this when I had zeam launcher on GB.

since they had to make the phone that big they should have just made the screen take up the entire top surface.

The battery cover is a real pain to get off, so it is "tighter" in that respect
Has a different version of Sense than the Inc. The phone says it's version 2.00.0000.339629. Has some UI differences, some new widgets, and more power settings (it has an auto power saver and a fast boot option that prevents apps from auto launching it looks like).
It seems a little more responsive than the Inc, but not amazingly so
The gallery does look different, you get a tiled view of all the photos, tapping on any of them makes it full screen, and swiping keeps it full screen. But I don't have a lot of experience with the Inc gallery
The screen has a LOT of glare. Like, a LOT of glare.
Do you feel as though it is a substantial upgrade over the original Inc, or pretty minor rework? Hows it feel in terms of build quality? I wish I could think of more things to ask lol... CAN YOU COME UP WITH A ROOT EXPLOIT IN THAT HOUR? Lol jk.

Buils quality feels about the same, it has that cheap platic frame around the top like the evo shift does, but the same rubberized back as the Inc.
Pulling down the notifications shows a lit of recently launches apps horizontally
And the KB has arrow keys now
Other notes
The power button in on the opposite side on the top.
The power adapter you get is a lot bigger and bulkier than the Inc one
The back is flatter than the Inc, it only has one plateau. It's rubberized like the Inc
The battery is only 1450ma
Can we get some stock comparison pics between the two?

Like I said, I don't have a camera handy.
As comparisons go, it looks like a bigger shift, in that it has the rounded edges on top and the longer speaker bar on top. It looks cheaper since the glass does not go to the edge of the phone, so you see more plastic.
When you connect it with the USB cable you hve new options, Internet Connection Modem Media Sync, and Internet pass through
The screen has WAY more glare than even the Inc SLCD's, and is MUCH harsher to look at than the AMOLED screens.
it also doesn't say "menu" anymore on the phone, it's three horizontal lines

I am very senstive to screens, but the screen is MUCH harsher to look at than the Inc's AMOLED, even worse than the SLCD on the newer Inc's and the Shift. If you are at all sensitive to glare, this thing will kill you. Even with a matte screen protector it was giving me problems.
Didn't have a chance to make a call, however, the reception was no better than my Inc. In my building my Inc often drops to 1X from 3G, and the Inc2 did the exact same thing at the exact same places. So I wouldn't expect any difference in reception.
It really doesn't feel like an Incredible 2, it feels and looks much more like a keyboardless Evo Shift. The hardware design looks a lot cheaper.

Screen Size of Galaxy Nexus vs. Epic 4G Touch

So here is the thing, so the screen size of the Nexus will be 4.6", is the actual usable part of the screen larger then our device?
What I mean, doesn't the buttons on the screen have to remain there all the time so in reality that part of the screen is not really usable for anything else. So it looks like you are not really getting any extra screen real estate you can use by having the buttons incorporated into the screen instead of the device.
Anyone see this any other way or am I missing something? If this is the case, it will really suck for smaller screens......
You are correct. From what I'm seeing the actual viewing screen is 4.3 inches do we imwill have a bigger screen in the end.

Off topic, kinda, I am dubious about placing the buttons onscreen. I haven't played with honeycomb much but with every iteration of android I've owned the screen occasionally freezes leaving only the capacitive buttons operative. If and when the screen freezes in ics will the onscreen buttons remain inoperable? If so, I'm a little glad I got one of the last phones with separate buttons.

On my galaxy tab 10.1 it was the same concept with using on screen keys only and they never once dissapeared. There are threads and people rooting just to try and get the buttons to move off screen during video playback and such. Idk. We will sure find out wont we? But ya I think for the most part the buttons will always be on the screen 90% of the time
I've been looking at galaxy nexus videos for the last couple of days and the software key area does not look capable of using that area for anything but those keys. The screen looks like it ends before the keys.

I agree as well. This phone feels like a mini tablet. If the screen resolution is better, hopefully they put a bigger battery to balance it out. It would make a difference right? Higher Res equals more battery use? Anyhow I love this phone. It is not going anywhere. I can't find anything (other than LOS) which I never get on pulled stock kernel. There is actual screen underneath those buttons. Idk if you've seen any of the demos but when doing thing like playing games or watching media those buttons disappear completely leaving you with a 4.65 inch hd screen. Another plus point is that they'll be context sensitive. So the dev of a given app can change them to fit your needs at any given time. I may be striking out from the crowd here but I'm actually totally in favor of then on screen keys. One of the most attractive features of the gnex in my opinion is the bezel to bezel screen.

I don't mean to sound like a ****, but, I'm not sure what your point is. I agree with you 100%. My only point was that on-screen buttons were no different than our current setup, as they are digitizer driven just the same (meaning that our buttons are the same on on-screen buttons except there is no screen underneath them and that their reliability in 'locked up' circumstances is not to be a concern.)
Also, addressing OP's main question, if you do the math....given the resolution and subpixel division between both phones we have, roughly, the identical panel but with a slightly different sub-pixel division. We have an absolutely identical sub-pixel amount...sure, they have less sub-pixels and we have more, but, they have more resolution and we have less. It's the same panel configured with a slightly different sub-pixel arrangement...so...for all intents and purposes consider our screen size identical. 0.10" is nothing to worry about.

Of course the new Galaxy Nexus has a better screen. It will look the same size as ours but will be a lot higher resolution. The screen is better on the Nexus and it is the one thing, other than ICS, I wish the SGS2 had. The Nexus and SGS2 have almost exactly the same physical footprint so it doesn't feel different than ours but you get more screen real estate when you need it (games, movies, internet, etc.). The people complaining about the 16x9 are off because the only time it seems like that is when you are in a movie or game and then 16x9 is great because it's like an HDTV. The area the SGS2 excels are the Camera and the processor. I don't know how anyone on here can argue that our older, lower res screen is in any way better than the new 720p Galaxy Nexus.

Too big?

So i went to look at the new Nexus in the o2 store and i thought it was very big. A lot of new phones seem to be much larger than they used to be, is there a reason for this? eg to fit more hardware in, or are they designed this way for usability etc?
At the moment i have the Nexus One which i thought was the perfect size but after having a closer look at some more modern phones i cant stop thinking mine looks small now.
http://phone-size.com/?s=12,13,3
What do people who have been using this phone think of its size?
GN too big. Nope!
Actually, its a pointless question as its very subjective down to arbitrary preference and hand size and dexterity, as well as how big your pockets are, size of wallet and/or keys etc etc.

Could not agree more... I would love to have a 5 inch screen...
It depends what you're looking for. If it's just a phone then there's plenty of small phones to choose from. If you need graphics and smartphone features then large screens are the way to go.
The only problem I have had with the screen size is that I usually hold the phone with one hand and type with one thumb, and with a screen this size it is a bit if a stretch to get to the keys on the opposite side of the screen. If you are a two-handed typist or have a long thumb you will be fine.
Actually I am trying to ask the developer of Thumb Keyboard to make a keyboard layout for one-thumb typing. Hopefully my plea will be heard!

Awesome Resolution = tiny everything!

So I of course love the 720p HD resolution on my SGN, however it drives me NUTS how many things appear to be extremely small- text in many apps, certain buttons in certain apps (e.g. the top navigation button in official Twitter app), notifications in top of the tray, etc.
I know you can adjust the size of system font but it doesn't impact all apps and doesn't impact notification tray icons, app UI elements, etc.
Does this bother anyone else? Has anyone tinkered with adjusting density via an app or build.prop? Any feedback? My concern is that doing this often causes negative impacts in certain UI elements...
Things aren't small enough at all. I couldn't disagree more. Seems like the high res is almost a waste.

Hmm interesting.... maybe it's because I'm coming from SGS2 in which everything was much larger due to the lower resolution being scaled/stretched up to fit the massive 4.52" screen. I know it leads to poorer rendering and pixelation, but was never really that noticeable (until placed side by side with my SGN).
Would still love any feedback if anyone has toyed with density...
You have to also take into account many apps aren't created for ICS. I feel some display elements may have changed from GB to ICS for phones
I think you're right in that you are just use to seeing a small resolution on a big screen and aren't use to the HD display.
Accessibility -> Large Text is always an option for those aging owners
lol...i wonder what the op would say to the fact that i use 240 dpi instead of the stock 320. my launcher is 6x6 w/search and my app drawer is 7x6. i find the stock 320 very big and a complete waste of the resolution.
ps-reduce google books font size to the minimum, you would be surprised at how tiny it gets, even more surprised at the fact that it is still crystal clear to your eye. the resolution is truly amazing!!

 ONE thing you HATE about the Fold?

if you HAD to pick one Negative about the phone, what would it be?
amongst the list of things i don't like, i must choose the one thing i use every single day, multiple times a day.
the POWER Button.
my previous device (huawei mate 20x), had a taught power button which didn't wiggle around, satisfying click when pressed, and for a bonus, textured and colored.
the Fold: aside from failing to combine the Power button and the Fingerprint Scanner, the power button on the Fold is just like any other Galaxy device: cheap, thin, loose, and mushy to press.
anyone else have something that erks them using the phone daily?
I have problems with the fingerprint reader. I misplace my finger a lot. I miss FaceID it was so much smoother.
I don't use the button. I double tap the screen instead.

here is something almost everyone doesn't think about when wishing for an edge to edge, top to bottom, front display:
how much imbalance it would create on the phone. one handed use would be completely be gone.
- for someone not using a launcher: reaching up top to swipe down notification shade
- whether using standard navigation buttons, or using edge swiping: imagine reaching all the way down just to hit he navigation area
- people who use swipe one handed for text, it actually is perfect ergonomically the way it is now.
- not everyone has big hands
during and even before the Fold presentation almost a year ago, everyone was criticizing the front screen size without thinking about it in depth, and people STILL criticize it in newer videos, made 2 or 3 months ago.
all they see is bezel and think "its 2019/2020, wtf are we doing with huge bezels?!?!?"
i hope samsung doesn't listen to all these brainless people moaning and groaning about screen to body ratio % in their next folding tablet device.

Actually the front screen doesn't have to be all the front, but it definitely needs to be wider. It's just to narrow to write fast and without issues. It works, but it's cumbersome. I mostly swipe or dictate because typing is too annoying ?
To your main question, one thing I hate about the Fold:
There are some things which could be better, like the fingerprint reader integrated into the power button, no notch, S-Pen support, wider front screen, glass screen, IP ratings, faster charging (like Note10+) and much much more... but there's just 1 thing which really annoys me: the selfie cameras. They're all ****ty. Even compared to S7 until Note10+ it's just ****. The can't focus on something you tap. All Samsung flagships can do it. It's so ****ty I don't take any selfies anymore. Even using GCam doesn't change anything because it's a hardware thing. To be honest, they could have added the Note10 selfie cam on the small front and no other cameras. They could also remove the notch since the cameras are very bad ?
