Insurance - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So I just ordered my nexus from expansys, in wondering what insurance people have bought if any, in case of loss or damage...what are some good ones

I'm wondering the same thing. I've seen people mention a company called "Squaretrade," but I don't know if they offer warranties for phones imported from another country into the U.S. I've been meaning to contact them about it but haven't had the chance yet.

I've heard cell phones can fall under personal property in a home insurance policy.
If you own a home I would check with your insurance company.

I have a little bit different question about insurance.
If I bricked my phone while flashing custom rom would I be able claim (accidental damage?)? I'm in UK, does anyone have any experience whith this type of claims? If yes, who was the insurance with?

Tmobile asurion insurance covers any phone you are using on the network. Just like the nexus one

I use CUSC now for £5 a month, I can't comment on their service as I've never had to claim - there is a £50 excess fee for each claim

Interesting. Correct me if I'm wrong, but does Assurion replace your phone with another phone if something happens to yours? I'd much rather have insurance that gives me the value of the phone in money so I could get another Galaxy Nexus rather than some other phone if need be.

My 1 experience with T-mo/Asurion was with my G2 having a screen issue, they replace it with the same device unless there are no more devices left (the phone is really old or way past EOL).

Not like it really matters. If you're going to take the high deductible of claiming accidental damage (much more expensive than lost/stolen), they will replace it. If they say they don't replace it from software things you did to it (for some reason...), you could just hit it with a hammer lol. Accidental damage is accidental damage.

If you are in the US I recommend SquareTrade

Doesn't matter. User-caused damage is always a higher deductible than lost/stolen phone. "Accidental" is going to be anything you cause yourself that warrants a repair or exchange. They don't make a distinction between "accidental" and "purposeful" damage. You're paying for the coverage it doesn't matter.

Where did "on purpose" come from? When I flash a new rom it is not my intention to damage the phone, I want to upgrade it. It is like saying that dropping a phone by accident == playing football with it because you didn't have a ball around. If you don't intend to damage it is not on purpose, it's by accident.

My previous cover had £30 pounds excess no matter what happenes. My wife drowned her iPhone in lip gloss and it stopped working, they replaced it for £30 punds (the same cover). Since then they have changed the excess amounts to £100 for iPhones and £50 for everything else.
I am just curious if bricked the phone would it be treated the same as the one damaged by lip gloss? I can lose £50, but £500 is a bit too much.

Thinking about that I gues telling them I was flashing official google update (after such is released) should do the trick.

No they don't. It seems they only cover damage to the phone. So if your phone is lost or stolen and you have square trade, you're screwed. This automatically disqualifies them for me.
For the person who recommended Asurion, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. If you file a claim on the Galaxy Nexus, YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE A GALAXY NEXUS. You will instead receive a phone they consider to be "comparable". Since you were talking about T-Mobile, I'd imagine they'd either send you an Amaze or a Galaxy S2, either of which I'd personally be upset about receiving. Especially considering the fact that even if you sold the phone they sent you, it still wouldn't be enough to cover the cost of a getting a new Galaxy Nexus. So you'd wind up paying a deductible of $130, then having to sell the phone they send you, then having to come out the pocket some more just to get the phone you already had.

I just had a T-mobile USA agent tell me otherwise. I HAD insurance for my Nexus One through them and removed the insurance 1 month ago. Now they will not (or can not) insure my Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Sucks.
I'm looking for alternatives... or maybe I'll try calling TMO again tomorrow and talk to another agent.

Insurance?

Does anybody know a good, RELIABLE insurance program located in the US (all the good ones I can find were in the UK) that covers the Evo? I just got mine and the sprint insurance is not worth it.
Thanks!
How exactly is the Sprint insurance not worth it?

Agreed, I have heard nothing but praise for their coverage
As far as I can tell, Squaretrade is $6/month as opposed to Asurian's $7/month. Both have a $50 deductible, am I missing something here?
Asurion is a $100 deductible on smart phones.
Ah, I see. I might just switch over to Squaretrade. Thanks.
Well I just switched to Sprint and my sister who's been with them for 5 years said it wasn't worth it. Maybe she was wrong.
And Squaretrade? Hmmm, I've read a lot bad things about them online. And they don't really provide what I want. I'm looking for insurance not a warranty. Squaretrade doesn't cover loss, theft, accidental damage, etc.

Actually they do cover accidental damage if you choose "premium smartphone" as the coverage type (which you would have to do anyways), but it doesn't look like they cover theft.
You could always lie and say you lost it or something in that case. I'm not sure if that is considered "accidental damage" or not. Say you dropped it in a lake? lol
Im looking into this as well.

Does anyone have insurance on their phone?

I was wondering if anyone had insurance through their carrier? Telekom here in Germany offers it for 100 euros out right and you pay 10 percent of what the phone is worth.. I passed on it but after hearing people having some issues I was wondering if I should go back to the store and sign up for it. I suppose I could always use the nexus s I have laying around incase something happens to my x

If there a difference between warranty and insurance? Because I heard if you root the phone you will lose the warranty... Anyway I'm from Canada and when I search on ebay.com and amazon.com I'm only seeing int version "no warranty" so I have to choice to buy it with no warranty for 550$ or to buy it from amazon.co.uk for 700$ with a warranty but I don't really see the point since I want to root my phone... I'm a bit worried if the issues start after the 30 day return delay T_T
Well the insurance is directly from the phone carrier and you deal solely through them plus I think they cover accidentally damage. The warranty through HTC would just cover things that might become faulty?

I just bought a 7£ silicone case to take all the psychical damage, had the same case for my desire and it worked just perfect! For hardware damage I'm counting on my insurance company is gonna pay
I have phone insurance with my Bank account in the UK, much cheaper.
It's worth getting insurance. Especially if you root. Anything goes wrong you "had it stolen".

Over here in Australia insurance payments generally add up to about half the cost the phone (sometimes even more, depending on the phone and when you purchase it). So I find it a waste of money. Besides, in my over 12+ years of using phones I haven’t had any serious mishaps (hope it stays that way).

What kind of issues are you referring to ? All hardware faults (display issues, overheating, WiFi issues etc.) should already be covered under warranty. Insurance is needed if you want protection against theft, lost or accidents. However, if the phone breaks due to poor build quality (e.g: the shell or the display cracking due to bad design, buttons stop responding etc..) then claiming warranty will be hard because its is difficult to prove , in that case insurance could come in handy.
if im not mistaken insurance covers your phone for anything...
even if u hard-bricked it as its independent of htc's warrenty
and there is no need for the phone is stolen blahblahblah
bank account insurance sucks ****, the best insurance is with your carrier and the only 2 carriers that I know provide good insurance is Vodafone and O2 both give you replacement if you accidence damage your phone, drop it, lost or stolen
Yes. I have.

they offered it to me indeed, I had it on my last phone, but now I just bought a case to protect it from damage and skipped on the insurance.

insurance and refurb questions

I dropped my phone and destroyed the screen, still worked but the screen was shattered and cracked real bad. First phone I ever broke from my own negligence.
I called and requested a new phone and was sent a refurb. After making it clear I was not accepting a refurb and wanted a new one it was sent to me.
I am glad I did since I am now seeing threads on problems with the refurbs. I have had nothing but trouble with them so far; between a droid 2 global and an env touch I received close to two dozen bad phones that were refurbished.
Is there another insurance company that is more willing to take care of their customers? An insurance company that cares about its customers; I know. But I am looking for other options or companies.
I always keep the insurance/extended warranty on all of my phones but all that is ever sent is a phone what was broken and sent back already. I think its a rip off to have a deductible and monthly payment unless there is a new phone to replace the phone I purchased new.
Any input or thoughts? Suggestions on other insurance plans?
Honestly, there is nothing wrong with refurbs. I had a hardware revision .10 Gnex originally, and I messed it up and wouldn't boot. I got Verizon to send me a new one at no cost to me and it's hardware revision .09 but it is identical to my original phone. No need to stigmatize refurbished phones... Half of the refurbs have never even been touched by another owner.
If you get into a car accident you pay the deductible and get your car repaired. Not a brand new car. So, you dropped your USED phone and you think you should get a brand new one from the insurance company? pfft.... If that were the case every asshole would be dropping their phones at the 8 month mark to scam a brand new one. I'm rooting for the insurance company on this one.
good day.
Insurance =brand new phone and u pay the deductible.
Warranty =refurbished phone for free
So did u go through insurance or the warranty as Verizon will not honor user error, ie breaking the screen

Insurance such as Asurion is typically a refurb replacement and is not obligated to send a new phone as a replacement. For that matter, it doesn't even necessarily have to be the same model or manufacturer that they replace it with.

The first time, ask for a new phone, not a refurb.
You're complaining they don't take good care of you when they sent you two phones when they were only obligated to send you one?
Why didn't u just do a screen replacement. =p

Second paragraph first sentence. Haters gonna hate.
Was curious about different options on insurance (not me) and peoples experiences with refub gnexes. I do not know who does the refurb but I personally went through plenty of them with laundry lists of issues.
Maybe samsung does a good job with QC while motorola does not. Broken camera on a the first refurb Droid 2 Global is a perfect example.

I thought if you report the phone stolen that they block the IMEI or something so the phone can't be used anyway.
I know when I was with t-mobile, one could just take the SIM card out and change it. Not understanding how it works with Sprint phones since they have to be activated. Google time lol.

I would go into the sprint store (that does repairs), show the person at the front your phone and tell them you want to talk to a tech to see about repairing the phone. You may be surprised, or not, at what they'll do. They'll either fix it there for less, or replace the phone for nothing seeing as you just got it. I wouldn't push that second option, but that's what they did for me without me even asking. Could have been the particular manager trying to boost her happy customer numbers, who knows. I've had sprint for 12 years, and have had SERO for 5+ of those. Still not sure why she did it, but I'm happy.
Heck, if it doesn't get you the free replacement outcome, go to a non-repair center store and try the same thing, as if you didn't know it was a non-repair store.

I guess lost things can be found...as far as ethics go we are talking about insurance, that in itself teeters on ethical behavior. we pay the premiums and sometimes need to utilize their "services". they will find a way to raise the price anyway if they need to.

I JUST HAD A WHOLE THREAD ON THIS WHY DIDN'T YOU SEARCH? It cost about 178.50 to repair per my conversation with Samsung, and this covers next day shipping there and back. I went to a Sprint Corporate store to get a repair because it was a minor crack that left the phone operating flawlessly. The tech told me that "Sprint" has a no repair on phones for some strange reason they are not allowed to repair phones.
Since Sprint is an Agent for Asurion insurance the are making money on the 150.00 deductible, and taking your phone and repairing these crack to make profit. So in essence the 11.00 fee is just gravy on top of that.
Drop insurance and just pay Sammy to fix it....the nerve of Sprint over charging for minor repairs like a cracked glass. I found an official front glass cover for 25.00. To repair it should not coast much, but you need an official repair or it may void the Samsung warranty.

Reporting the phone lost when it's not and getting a new one with insurance is really unethical and also probably illegal. If you're going to do that, though, might as well "cleanse" the ESN of the old one and sell it on ebay for $500-600.
i had sprint for 2 years now and i had over 12 replacements. I started off with htc evo and they kept braking down and I would just take it to tech people and they replaced for free and then as replacement. I got htc evo 3d and then had few of them kept braking down or something then I got a moto photon and i was really dropped it and cracked screen they had extra photon that was going back for something other bad and he swapped screen onto my photon and went thought few more and then i got a SGS2 as a replacement. Everyone was shocked I got it as a replacement from sprint and then I havent spent anything to replace or fix my cell yet and now renewed my contract and got SGS3 and i love it
sprint been best service I have had for phones (I use to work for tmobile ......and had custom plan...)

If u ever download a rom it says in the developers disclaimer usually
Your warranty is now void.
But u can always just turn it in and say the malfunctions of the phone are (make up some excuse, even though u bricked it) Now There is a counter inside the phone
It'll show you when you boot into download mode.
Flashing things through Odin trip the counter
Well u will either be charged the deductible or u wont be??
So would u lie for a new phone??
some people believe in lying for this and some people dont mind....
Thanks a lot man but I wasn't asking about the warranty as I am not paying for that.. I was asking about the insurance coverage...coz I will be paying around $10 each month for it.. so just wanted to be sure that if the phone gets bricked, the screen shatters or whatever goes wrong...will they be able to cover it even if its rooted...
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda premium
It's $11.99 per month. The Tmobile guy told me I can only buy it right there at the store only when I bought the device. Once I leave, I won't be able to buy it, not sure he is BS or not. He said I can always cancel it later once I leave but cannot add it back on. Thus, I added it since I plan to odin/root and all that stuff.
The caveat: Tmobile guy said you have to pay $5 deductible for defective phone (looks normal but not behaving normally) or $175 deductible for any other reasons for the life of that phone such as physical damage, lost, water, stolen (including brick - if I bricked it, I'll just tell them I lost it)

Thanks a lot man...yeah I called tmobile today.. and the lady told thay today is tge last day to add insurance on it(I bought in on apr 29th)...so I added the $7.79 one on it. As they have three kinds on insurances. ..it covers almost everything..I didnt see any difference between this one and the 11.99 one...so I opted for this...

Thanks for letting me know about this. It seems like a great value $99 for 2 year but does not cover loss or theft. I'll use it on my other phone. There is a $99 deductible. It does cover water damage...so if I brick this I guess I'll just pour water over it and pay $99 to get a new one. Is there anyway to claim for loss or theft on SquareTrade?
$99 (24 months excluding loss and theft)
http://www.squaretrade.com/samsung-galaxy-warranty
vs
Tmobile $11.99/mo ($288 of 24 months)

Why do people always confuse insurance with warranty? Insurance covers everything. You could brick your phone, shatter the screen, or drop it in the toilet and you just pay the deductible and get a new one. Or if your phone gets lost or stolen it is also covered

So what's the point of paying for squaretrade?? We already have Samsungs warranty for free? This isn't INSURANCE this is WARRANTY. Im paying $8 a month with tmobile for INSURANCE so if my phone breaks I can just pay a deductible and get a new one. And if my phone starts having some kind of issues I'll use Samsungs WARRANTY and get an exchange for $5.

Good point. I saw the $8 earlier but it was greyed out so I thought it is no longer available to this phone...however if I click the insurance tab, it is no longer greyed out...so it is available to tmo s4 still. This $8 is good. Even though it does not cover malfunction, I think that can easily be resolved... If I bricked it, I'll just say it is stolen...bam...I can still get a replacement. The Tmo guy at the store tried to sell me the $12, I guess I'll just have to call them tomorrow to switch to this $7.79 one.
So now, it's
$6 (no loss of theft)
$99 deductible
vs
$8 (not the $12) tmobile insurance still cover loss and theft except malfunction (but does cover loss or theft, lol)
$175 deductible

If it's malfunction you can get a warranty exchange. And if you brick it you should still be able to to the claim. Insurance is for you so if you **** up your phone (brick, water damage, broken screen) you can pay a deductible and get a new phone. And i wouldn't report it stolen, I jeard if you report stolen you have to have a police report ( don't quote me on that). I lost my S3 once on a drunken night and just filed a claim the next day as lost. Got a new one the next day.

Hrm...interesting. Ok, note to self don't use Stolen excuse. Use LOST as universal excuse (including hard brick) I like the lost or stolen option since I may lose it at crowded places/parties and about to travel international country (might get pick pocket)
squaretrade covers everything Accidental Damage from Handling coverage even that!, if u read the agreement when u sign up u get that.
Samsung Galaxy S 4 Black 4/29/2013 2 years with ADH, thats costing me less then 6.00. Im not sure about the theft or loss
