[Q] Question regarding rooting and S-Off - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just rooted my desire using unrevoked3. Now i want to know if i need to do S-Off using Alpharev or does unrevoked method enables S-Off ?
I am bit confused and need some expert advice on this.
Thanks,
Vishy

I'm confused that you're confused. What is confusing about not confusing information in dev section how to not confusingly root your phone?
This is all very confusing.

I read somewhere that S-off is not required if using unrevoked. That is why this question.

Root and S-OFF are two different things. S-OFF lets you write to the system partition whereas ROOT only allows writing to the data partition. You will need both ROOT and S-OFF to have total control of the filesystem.
I used unrevoked to gain root with my Desire GSM. Later on I wanted to do S-OFF so I used "revolutionary". Revolutionary seems to be easier than the Alpharev method because I did not have to burn a CD to do it. If you already have used unrevoked, then try revolutionary to gain s-off. You will not need to install a new recovery from the revolutionary method because unrevoked already should have installed CWM 2.5.0.7. The only caveat is that you should have a stock rooted or non-rooted froyo rom installed when you try the S-OFF procedure (if you dont want to risk any problems).

S-off is required if you want to edit the system partition while the phone is on (eg. such as using root explorer to delete system apps) or to modify your partition table to gain more space for apps.

[Q] I'm A DUMMY. I KNOW

I'm ready to root and I've been reading and reading and reading and reading and I just don't understand how to root. I need a dummy proof way a step by step system to get this done. I know that my hboot is 0.97.0000. Someone please help me. I ready just need a more detailed root method. Thanks
Try this and skip the ota if you want to keep 0.97. http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever You can later flash the latest ota ruu in recovery
Unrevoked Forever doesn't root the phone. It does NAND unlock (S-OFF) which allows you to flash custom ROMs.
You said your HBOOT is 0.97, so you can probably use Unrevoked 3.21/3.22 one click root to root your phone.

You need to flash a recovery(search the development thread for clockworkmod recovery)
Flash this recovery via fastboot(search the whole forum for a guide)
And then flash a ROM(or other things) of your choice via the recovery menu.
Hope this helps
Personally, I downgraded by flashing a stock 2.1 RUU, then used unrevoked 3.2 to root it and install clockworkmod.
Then just flashed a cyanogen nightly (#57). Although you can choose whatever rom you want.
I have tried with unrevoked 3 to root the phone, but at some point i got the following message:
Validation error: Backup CID is missing
any idea how to fix that?

When i flash unrevoked 2.2 after s-off and downgrade to 2.1 is had the same problem. I don't know why but unrevoked 3.14 worked fine. For me newer is not always better.

once S-OFF, downgrading and then rooting is a lengthier process. As already stated in the post #2, after S-OFF just flash a recovery from the fast boot menu and thats all ur phone is rooted.
get the PC49IMG.ZIP file and the process from here. (most painless and secure algorithm)

Buy it.
Also learn to search.
Alright. I think I'm gonna get my device S-OFF soon...
So all I have to do is
1. Flash to 2.1 RUU
2. Flash a recovery via fastboot
3. Flash a new ROM
That is all right?

If you are going for Step 2, there is no need for Step 1. Just flash a recovery via Fastboot, and you are good to go with Custom ROMs, even on the updated HBoot.

I've been reading alot about this but I don't geddit. Everyone says that with hboot 1.01.0002 you can't get s-off without using the xtc clip. Are you saying you just downgraded to Android 2.1 then flashed a custom ROM

What you have heard is false. HBoot 1.01x requires XTC Clip to get S-OFF, and, only then can it be downgraded and rooted.

If i used XTC clip to S-OFF a wildfire, is it then possible to restore a rooted ROM? Or do i need to root the phone, then when i load any ROM it is rooted, because root is at a lower level?
Is root access something which is stored in the operating system or some lower level?

Root is given by the app called Superuser. Just as in linux, every program that wants to do something that needs root rights, has to ask for it. In android that permission is "tunneld" by the superuser, which asks you if you want to grant an app root access, and then gives it to that app with your permission. But of course, the only way that superuser can grant root access, is when it is propperly installed, and has some files in the /system folder. Which is not possible without root permissions
So: if you are s-off, you can flash a recovery image trough fastboot (working with unrevoked gives you the custom recovery right away) by the adb command "flastboot flash recovery " (google for "cyanogenmod wiki flastboot" if you are planning it, it is really nice explaned). Trough that recovery you can apply some kind of an "update.zip", which installes the right superuserfiles on your system anx changes nothing else. Notice me if you want those files, I know where to find them here on xda.
From that moment on, when an app asks for root permission, you get a popup from the superuser app to ask if you really want to grant that app such permissions or not: if yes, the app has root access now!
This is all based on my experience with the stock ROM, don't know how the process works in CM or wildpuzzle.
Erwin
Edit: and if you want to delete or modify rom specific things (like htc stock app), you can connect your phone to your computer, mount your system as read/write by the command "adb remount" and then delete it trough adb commands. No need to go trough recovery for this.
Perhaps the same is possible if you have a file manager that can handle rooted phones, but not sure about that.

[Q] Replacing recovery

Hello everyone, I'm a newbie here, so go easy on me, OK?
Well, I have (generic) stock HTC 2.2 (2.29.405.5) Desire (GSM), bravo ptv1 ship s-on, hboot - 0.93.0001, radio 5.11.05.27. I rooted it using unrEVOked latest issue on Linux Ubuntu. Rooting went perfectly good, I gained root access and Clockwork recovery.
My question is: how to replace Clockwork recovery with Amon Ra? Wich way is the quickiest and least painful for an average user?
Than you all in advance, cheers!
well, you either must unroot, then while rooting again choose amonra recovery in unrevoked or go S-OFF and flash new recovery image through fastboot
Thanks, I just tried flashing it thru Terminal Emulator, but it gave me error "flash_image: not found", so I guess it has something do to with root access. NMV.
How do I choose Amon Ra recovery for unrEVOked, it only gave me Clockwork? Remember, I'm under Ubuntu, so I can't pick recovery in unrEVOked UI.
no idea how to do that in linux, consider going S-OFF ?
i used CD method, was as easy as rooting, one thing required - a rom without A2SD+ or DATA2xxx

Seconded, s-off by live CD comparable to rooting, and after s-off you can also resize your partition tables and delete unneeded apps whilst booted via Ti backup or root explorer.
Well worth the time!
S-OFF is driving me nuts
How are my chances to make a wll worthy paper holder out of phone? And, do I still need to mess with adb after s-off in order to restore funcionality to rom?

There are several detailed threads about s-off, ok small chance of bricking phone, but really tiny as long as you follow instructions and take your time. Same as rooting!
Read some threads and go through the information at alpharev site carefully:
http://alpharev.nl/
After doing it just restore the nandroid you made before starting...

ok, been asked to root someone elses phone?

i did mine about a year ago via the ancient gold card method but i assume there's easier ways to do it now?
could i just just straight to getting s-off add the clockwork mod recovery, backup, flash new hboot, install new rom?
Use a app called unrevoked on your pc, very easy to do, no need for s-off.
I have never seen the need to s-off my phone, I stick with stock H-Boot and custom stock ROMs.
Rooting
Hi guys, I'm about to try rooting my desire for the first time. The guides and tutorials on this forum are great but i was just wondering whether if i need to s-off as part of the root process in order to install customer ROMs such as Oxygen's gingerbread rom?
I'm going to use one of the noob guides to rooting here on the forums, one has got s-off as part of the process and the other hasnt. Can anyone advise which one is best to follow?

no you don't but if you s-off you can install custom hboots which give you more memory, but they are not necessary and you should do fine if you have an ext partition on your sd card. If you run out of memory you can install the zip to move dalvik cache to the sd card.
you can create a ext partition with rom manager just choose 512mb of ext and no swap
Installation
Perform a wipe of /data and /cache if coming from any other ROM
Download and install the ROM via recovery as you would any other ROM
You dont need s-off install on stock H-Boot

Or better go and install a ROM with data2sd my insternal memory is 2GB
Use the Unrevoked method so easy even i did it first time right all you need is to install android usb drivers and hook the desire up to the PC and the unrevoked program does it for you. the instructions are on their web site. And as to s-off there is not much need for it unless you really want to flash a cm7 hboot or something but there are plenty of roms that dont need it.
usb drivers are all good to go. i use adb on my desire anyway
i'll do the unrevoked method then and s-off after backups. (going to install oxygen for him). he's fed up of his desires battery life
Root
I rooted my desire with unrevoked, a friends hero with one click, another desire with unrevoked, nexus one with gold card and a SE x8 with z4 i think or one click..
I ALWAYS told them i'll be doing it at their own risk!

Just make sure he knows the risks of rooting, warranty, etc, although nothing will go wrong. As for s-off, I've never really had a need to do it. Also if someone is asking you to root there phone for them do you really want them having full root with s-off. I don't know if I would give someone who doesn't know what they are doing full access to any and all system files. That's just me though because I know some people can be pretty technology stupid.
he just wants the kind of batt life i get with mine and need s-off to flash the cm7 hboot for the extra data space since otherwise would need to throw in an ext partition and if he ever swaps the sd card out ..........
he wouldn't know how to do anything regarding adb to screw things up.
i have mentioned 'at your risk' though.

But i think you have to renember that you can find two diffetent versions of ROM . Cm7 wich need s off and a2sd or a2sd+ wich works fine on stock hboot.

HTC Desire - update recovery

Hello!
Some time ago, in 2011 or so, I followed a tutorial and managed to root my HTC Desire Bravo A8181. In fact, I just rooted it and somehow it's still S-ON.
Now the thing is that I want to flash a new recovery ( 5.x.x.x) instead of my 2.5.x.x . I can't find the exact tutorial for this because my phone is not unrooted.
If someone could help me and point me through the exact steps in doing this operation, I'd be grateful. Thank you!

Rooting and S-ON / S-OFF are separate. Rooting is just to do with root access, I assume you used unrevoked for this. S-OFF is fully unlocking the bootloader, and is much more powerful overall.
To flash a different recovery you need to be S-OFF first. Search and user 'revolutionary' for this
Instructions to actually flash the recovery are in that thread linked above.
Whilst it's useful to change to a recent recovery, the main benefit of S-OFF is actually to change hboot so you can increase the Desire's actual internal memory.
Thank you!
So, if I switch to TWRP do I need to S-OFF? I saw I could flash it just like a ROM, from the actual Recovery.
When I try to S-OFF with revolutionary, it seems it won't get past 'Waiting for device...' even though I installed USB Drivers.
Of course I am sure that USB Debugging was enabled.

Were you in fastboot when running revolutionary? If your bootloader is unlocked then u need to flash it via fastboot but if it is s off I think you can do from recovery or the PB99IMG.zip method.
