[Q] I'm A DUMMY. I KNOW - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm ready to root and I've been reading and reading and reading and reading and I just don't understand how to root. I need a dummy proof way a step by step system to get this done. I know that my hboot is 0.97.0000. Someone please help me. I ready just need a more detailed root method. Thanks

Try this and skip the ota if you want to keep 0.97. http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever You can later flash the latest ota ruu in recovery

Unrevoked Forever doesn't root the phone. It does NAND unlock (S-OFF) which allows you to flash custom ROMs.
You said your HBOOT is 0.97, so you can probably use Unrevoked 3.21/3.22 one click root to root your phone.

[Q] Best way to root new 2.2 phone

hello,
This might be nood request I just rec my replacement phone in that has 2.2 after no 4g issue with my rooted 2.1
question
1. In 2.1 the toast (easy) way of rooting was the best way with nandroid that work best on all custom roms. unrevoked had issues from my understanding.
2.what is best
unrevoked 3.2
or
How to root Android 2.2 on the EVO 4G
or
??????
3. which one way is the best way to unroot if need be to return to stock.
Thank you in advance I am looking into aVa v7 or virus series roms after I root 2.2 what is the best?
The how to root one uses unrevoked also. Its easy and unrevoked released how to put security back on the phone if need to be. Unrevoked 3 roots and unrevoked forever nand unlocks the phone. Give it a try. Don't be afraid..

ROOT
I still do not like using unrevoked for root.
I did the beginning steps in "How to root 2.2" to downgrade to 2.1. After that, I just used Toast's method for root and NAND unlock.
It's all personal preference.
If you go this route, you do not need to download any of the unrevoked files in the 2.2 thread.

[Q] Unroot process...

Hi, I have a little problem here. I root my phone with UnrEVOked3, but I never use the UnrEVOked Forever, so I follow a simple unroot guide found here, and the guide say that if you don't use UnrEVOked forever you don't need to flash the s-on tool and skip to flash the PC36IMG.zip. So I did that and everything was fine but I have the s-off so, this is normal or I did something wrong.
** Ok nevermind I found that when you use Unrevoked3 at the end of the root process flash Unrevoked forever, so I root again and flash the s-on tool problem solve, please Delete this Post.

What is the difference between unrevoked 3 and unrevoked forever

Could someone explain the difference? I rooted using unrevoked 3
Unrevoked Forever does not root. It is used to set your phone's security setting from S-ON to S-OFF (NAND unlock). This allows you to flash stuff like custom ROMs.
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever
Unrevoked3 is a exe package that you run on your computer that will root your phone. It will also flash unrevoked forever for NAND unlock.

THANK YOU!
Im slowly but shortly catching up to everythingon here. So will unrevoked forever wipe all my info off my phone?
No it will not.
So using unrevoked forever won't erase any data? Just turns the s-on to a s-off so you can flash roms, kernels, ect.? Now to back up before doing so is there anyway to back up your txt convos?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yes, that is what unrevoked forever does...does a NAND unlock so that you can flash stuff like custom ROMs.
Text convos...meaning the text messages right? There's a few, but the one I use to back them up is called 'SMS Backup & Restore' by Ritesh Sahu. You can find it in the market.

What you failed to mention, is the actual differences, Unrevoked forever requires your phone to be rooted before you can use it.
What the actual difference between unrevoked3 and unrevoked forever is.
unrevoked forever makes a change that is stored in the radio's NV memory; no ENG bootloader is necessary to continue to flash firmware images. Even if an “unrootable” OTA update is accepted, a device on which unrevoked forever has been run will still be able to reflash a custom recovery image.
What this means is that even if you unroot your phone with a stock non-rooted RUU, you will still be able to reflash a custom rooted rom to your phone.
When they were developed, unrevoked3 was just a way to get a custom recovery onto your phone, you needed to use unrevoked forever to actually root your phone.
This has been changed, unrevoked3 now also provides root.

I used unrevoked 3. I was able to download the wifi tetherin app...i am able to use wifi for free and all the rooted apps are workin on my phone. But when i check it still says s-on? Dose unrevoked 3 just give you the ability to download rooted apps but not flash custom roms?
Sent from my PC36100
Unrevoked3 previously, before 3.21, only rooted your phone and flashed a custom recovery. Just download unrevoked forever, flash it, and it will give you S-OFF.
Now that i have S-off my computer seems slower when tethering. Is that normal

If your on hboot 0.92 follow this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1306400
If your on hboot 1.02 follow this guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506258
I apologize for any redundancy but I am letting you know of this because i went through this whole process about a month ago and I want make sure you don't have to go through the headache that I did. Keep in mind that you must use Unrevoked 3.22 It Will Not work if you try to use 3.32 or any other later version. Also note that this must be done after downgrading your device to android version 2.2 (froyo) because 2.3.4 patches the exploits that unrevoked uses to flash CWM. Good luck and happy rooting!

[Q] Tips on ROOTing - Desire HD, HTCdev unlocked, CWM recovery, 2.3.5 sense 3.0

Hi All,
I've been trying to S-OFF my desire HD, since the AAHK has been retired I've been trying to follow attn1's high level instructions found at attn1's blog.
So far I've:
HTCdev unlocked my bootloader (needed to upgrade the RUU using a goldcard)
Flashed CWM recovery
Now I'm trying to gain root access to continue, I got some questions about this:
Since I have an unlocked bootloader do I need to use and exploit (fre3or, Zergrush, tarcoroot) to gain root access or is there another way to do this?
If I do need to use an exploit, I've read tarcoroot is the only one that works on 2.3.5 (I've tried the other 2, they don't work), can you gain permanent root by using su, superuser and busybox after gaining temp root with tarcoroot? Or do I need to downgrade ROM with tarcoroot and then use one of the other 2 exploits to then gain perm root?
Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be awesome.

If you use any of the exploits here or here you should be fine
You don't need S-Off to root if you've already unlocked your bootloader and flashed a recovery. Just flash either a Superuser apk or a rooted ROM from recovery.
