Whats the root method to use these days

OK guys (and gals) I'm a noob and totally confused myself trying to read 1000s of pages here in the forum. I'm currently running OTA 3.26.651.6 and understand there's a 3.29.****.5 OTA now available. I tried TheBiles idiot proof guide but the link in step 30 is broke. Most of the guides out there seem to be out of date. So I'm looking for some advice from the PROS on which to use and how to use. Remember im a noob so keep it simple. Also is there a glossory about all this like:

unrevoked 3.21
You run it on your computer, plug in your phone, and follow the directions. You get full root and ClockworkMod recovery installed on your phone, as well as unrevoked forever. It's super easy.
Pros:
It's super easy
It gives you full root
It gives you root forever (unrevoked forever)
Takes care of everything (root, custom recovery, "S-OFF" AKA unrevoked forever)
Thoroughly tested
Cross-platform support
You can actually set any custom recovery image you want through the menu
Cons:
You need a computer

Don't update through Sprint (ever). That's not how we roll around here. You're gonna want to root your phone as it is, then flash a custom ROM. You can tell which ones are based on the latest OTA on that wiki page; flashing one essentially "updates" you to that version. Personally, I recommend Fresh Evo 3.3.0.1 if you like Sense, or CyanogenMod v6.0.0 if you don't.

The biles guide was made a while ago, so it makes sense it is out of date. The best next one, that works, would be regaws method. There is even a mac guide using his method if you have a mac.

Will the current unrevoked3 work with build number 3.29.651.5?

OK I ran the unrEVOked3 and it said "done". Do i still need to run unrEVOked forever?

Yes, the newest version of unrevoked3 worked for me with 3.29.651.5.

I've been wondering this as well. I ran the newest unrevoked3 and it gave me full NAND unlock and S-off but I'm not sure if it is permanent and if I should run forever as well.... would appreciate some input on this!

Does this permanently unlock the NAND flash on my phone?
Yes. The default configuration of this tool disables the phone's security, which also disables the NAND locks placed on the storage by the bootloader. If you choose not to disable security, the /system partition will be read-only after the tool completes.

Using Old Backup's with this?
Here is my question on this. I just recieved my new phone today and I am planning on using this method to root my phone. Before I gave up my old phone I did a Nand backup which has all of my programs my "fresh rom" and ect. on it. Now on the old phone I used the Toast method and nand unlock to root my phone. Will I be able to just do a normal nand restore after I use the unrevoked3 to unlock my new phone? Or do I have to start all over? I checked on the sd card in the Nandroid backup is there. Thank you in advance

I read that the other day, but I kept reading posts stating to run unrevoked forever after unrevoked3 to make it permanent. Was a little confused... I guess unrevoked 3.21 includes unrevoked forever, lots of contradicting posts though.

one thing about that wiki that confuses me is when it talks about .ZIP ROMS, once i use unrevoked can I use Fresh's .ZIP?

Unrevoked 3 was pre-Unrevoked 3.21. That did not do Nand unlock and S-Off and required you to flash Unrevoked Forever to get Nand unlock and S-Off.

.zip ROMs are flashed via recovery. unrevoked should give you CWM recovery, and therefore you should be able to flash ROMs (including Fresh). Make sure you back up, and also wipe data, cache, and dalvik-cache before flashing. If you need help with that, here's a step-by-step:
Have full root with NAND unlock, by unrevoked 3.21 (recommended) or otherwise
Download the ROM you want in .zip format (Go for Fresh!)
Put the .zip into the root of your microSD card
Install Quick Boot from the Market
Use Quick Boot to enter recovery
Go to nandroid, then make a backup
Go to wipe, and wipe data, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik-cache
Select "Flash zip from SD card"
Select the one you downloaded
Let it run
Reboot your phone
Congratulations! You are now part of the cool kids club!
Alternately, purchase ROM Manager Premium which allows you to download, backup, wipe and flash all in one step from within Android and without interacting with recovery. $4.99 and totally worth it.

OK, but what about those of us that don't want a custom ROM? Is there any reliable way of getting from root 3.26 to root 3.29 without a data wipe?
As far as I can tell my best reliable option is:
1) Use Titanium Backup to backup all my apps/settings
2) Use unrevoked3 and the stock 3.29 ROM here to upgrade to 3.29 and regain root
3) Reinstall Titanium and restore my apps/settings
Is this correct, or is there an easier way?

S-off is unrevoked forever. So if it shows S-off in the boot loader then your good, u don't need to do anything else.

On another Evo which I've helped root, I just downloaded the new 3.29 rooted stock ROM, wiped cache/davlik cache, flash new ROM, reboot, then go back and flash the new radio/PRI stuff and it works without having to wipe phone data.

It is my understanding that as long as you have the same Recovery flashed (Clockwork or Amon RA) as you did on your old phone you should be able to copy the backups to your SD card (maintaining the same directory structure as they were before) and restore them without issue.

How do I root Evo running 2.2?

If this is in the wrong section, I do apologize. I have a friend who wants me to root his phone for him, but he has done all the OTA updates. Here is the info

What is the best method for rooting? I used the Simple Root program to root mine, but I don't think that works on 2.2

Look in the Android Development section for rooting 2.2. It's not nearly as easy as simple root but the instructions are pretty clear and straightforward.

doesn't NAND unlock though. I just found that out. Now I'm looking for another solution. Can't seem to find SimpleRoot anywhere on the forum

Unrevoked 3, the newest version, does unlock NAND. I use that method and it worked well and required only few clicks. I also rooted using the old method, Unrevoked 3 worked just as well and I am Nand unlocked.

Apparently not. I used Unrevoked 3 last night to root my Evo and when I tried to install BusyBox it gave me a failed message saying something along the lines of "....or you are not NAND unlocked" If I'm missing something please let me know. Im ready to flash Fresh3.3 but I dont want to make any moves until I'm absolutely sure I've done everything right

Flash unrevoked 3. 21, reboot, check everything then flash unrevoked forever. But before this flash the latest version of ARMON RA, 1. 8 I think. Afterwards do a android backup FIRST. Then root. Be sure to click the "more " link at the unrevoked site, go through ALL the docs first.

That would be nandroid backup. Do ARMON ra first, then backup, then root.

Ok I'll have to try this later on tonight. Off to work now. Is this still easier than using SimpleRoot because I just downloaded that as well.

Just so we have this straight. I've already flashed Unrevoked. I have S-Off and Super User and all of that.
You're saying to reflash, Reboot, check and make sure everything is cool.
Then run Unrevoked Forever BEFORE or AFTER runnin AmonRa? In the unrevoked menu I can choose my own recovery shouldn't I just do it there?
After then root again?

Ok brother, 1)Run Unrevoked 3.21 using AmonRa when that is done 2)Make a Nandroid 3)You need to put Unrevoked Forever on your SD card and flash that, its that simple, now you are rooted, S-off, nand unlocked etc....

There is no need to flash unrevoked forever if you root with unrevoked 3.21. It is already included. And if you want confirmation look at the faq for ur3.21.

This. I was about to say the same thing. UnrEVOked 3.21 does 3 things: Root, NAND unlock and S-OFF all in a nice little executable. Once you get that wonderful "Done" on unrevoked's application you are done and can flash away any custom ROM.

I used the old 2 part root method and MY evo has been rooted since June. Now my friend wants his rooted. He has also done all the ota updates. If I do unrevoked 3.21, will I be able to unroot if he ever needs to take his phone back to Sprint ??? I've read a bunch of mixed results.

I've seen lots of info saying that a EVO 4G that came with 2.2 can't be rooted but based on what I'm seeing here that looks to be outdate info? Are you guys saying that unrevoked 3.21 is meant to be used on a EVO that comes with 2.2 or one that was already rooted?? Might be a dumb question but nothing out there clearly states this...

Unrevoked3 / unrevoked forever ?

Can someone explain ? I used unrevoked3 to root my Evo 4g a few months ago....now I just flashed the unrevoked forever zip! But I'm not to sure what it did?

Umm, why would you flash unrevoked forever if you dont know what it does?
Unrevoked 3 basically put unrevoked forever on your phone, meaning your phone is forever rooted (as opposed to only being rooted until a reboot). Running unrevoked forever again most likely reversed your root.

That is not what unrevoked forever does.... unrevoked forever unlocks nand. Basically on hboot screen stock from factory the s-on.
Unrevoked3 roots your phone for you and installs a custom recovery. It also runs unrevoked forever so that it turns s-off and unlocks nand protection.
Running unrevoked forever again more than likely did nothing. To turn the s-on again you should run the forever s-on zip but there is no need for this unless you are taking your phone to sprint for whatever reason.
You can verify that you have root several ways, to me the easiest would be to go into terminal and type su then hit enter. If the little $ symbol turns to a # symbol then you got root still.
To check for s-off go into hboot, or bootloader, and verify that s-off is showing.
That is all.

The older version, as of like ~November didn't give you nand unlock, in which you flashed the forever zip. Now that part has been integrated into the unrevoked 3, and gives you nand unlock. So if you use the latest version of it, you don't need the forever zip.

to be rooted isn't s-off supposed to show? I have s-on and i'm rooted....

I held my power and down volume buttons and I'm showing s-on and I know they say it should show s-off to show that you are rooted. I used unrevoked a year ago so I can use wireless tether and I'm still using wifi tether so I must be rooted, I think? Is it possible it temporarily rooted and now I'm not rooted, but can still use the wifi tether? Under my super user permissions it only shows wifi tether.

You're rooted but don't have nand unlocked.
Download unrevoked forever from the unrevoked site & flash it in recovery. You'll be s-off then.

You do need to be NAND unlocked (S-OFF) to flash anything that is not official. Once you get S-OFF you can flash a custom recovery and flash a custom ROM. Once you get the recovery but before you flash anything else you should make a nandroid backup of everything.

Ok thanks, I downloaded unrevoked forever and that turned s-off. Now I'm set to download and flash a rom, whooo hoooo=)

Can't get S-OFF via Revolutionary

I'm currently S-ON with hboot 2.10.0001.
When I try to use Revolutionary to get s-off it tells me that I don't have the right Hboot version.
So I checked the wiki for the tool and it says I need 2.16.0001 or 2.15.0001.
I tried flashing 2.16.0001 in recovery and it appears to work but at the top of my bootloader it still says 2.10.0001?
I'm not sure what the issue is.
P.S. ive been running miui for a while and do have some root just not unlocked nand i guess.

have you tried unrevoked also you cant flash roms without being nand unlocked (s-off)

UPDATE: Never mind. Unrevoked forever got me S-OFF
I can certainly flash roms and access recovery. No problems there.
I definitely have root (titanium backup works and I can issue superuser commands in terminal)
Is it possible that the bootloader is wrong?
BTW I cant flash different recoveries, it goes through but when I check I still have the same recovery (Amon RA).
I used a very old method of rooting (prior to GB). Everything has been cool but I did revert to stock everything briefly about 7 months ago.
When I took my phone in cause of a burnt out battery.
Can I use unrevoked even though I'm already rooted?
Don't want to mess anything up since everything is working except small things like adaway (requires s-off and won't work unless i use ADB from recovery).

I myself can't help with the unrevoked ?s because I never rooted a phone with unrevoked
