I'm currently S-ON with hboot 2.10.0001.
When I try to use Revolutionary to get s-off it tells me that I don't have the right Hboot version.
So I checked the wiki for the tool and it says I need 2.16.0001 or 2.15.0001.
I tried flashing 2.16.0001 in recovery and it appears to work but at the top of my bootloader it still says 2.10.0001?
I'm not sure what the issue is.
P.S. ive been running miui for a while and do have some root just not unlocked nand i guess.

have you tried unrevoked also you cant flash roms without being nand unlocked (s-off)
UPDATE: Never mind. Unrevoked forever got me S-OFF
I can certainly flash roms and access recovery. No problems there.
I definitely have root (titanium backup works and I can issue superuser commands in terminal)
Is it possible that the bootloader is wrong?
BTW I cant flash different recoveries, it goes through but when I check I still have the same recovery (Amon RA).
I used a very old method of rooting (prior to GB). Everything has been cool but I did revert to stock everything briefly about 7 months ago.
When I took my phone in cause of a burnt out battery.
Can I use unrevoked even though I'm already rooted?
Don't want to mess anything up since everything is working except small things like adaway (requires s-off and won't work unless i use ADB from recovery).

Could someone explain the difference? I rooted using unrevoked 3
Unrevoked Forever does not root. It is used to set your phone's security setting from S-ON to S-OFF (NAND unlock). This allows you to flash stuff like custom ROMs.
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever
Unrevoked3 is a exe package that you run on your computer that will root your phone. It will also flash unrevoked forever for NAND unlock.
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/unrevoked3
THANK YOU!
Im slowly but shortly catching up to everythingon here. So will unrevoked forever wipe all my info off my phone?
No it will not.
So using unrevoked forever won't erase any data? Just turns the s-on to a s-off so you can flash roms, kernels, ect.? Now to back up before doing so is there anyway to back up your txt convos?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yes, that is what unrevoked forever does...does a NAND unlock so that you can flash stuff like custom ROMs.
Text convos...meaning the text messages right? There's a few, but the one I use to back them up is called 'SMS Backup & Restore' by Ritesh Sahu. You can find it in the market.

What you failed to mention, is the actual differences, Unrevoked forever requires your phone to be rooted before you can use it.
What the actual difference between unrevoked3 and unrevoked forever is.
unrevoked forever makes a change that is stored in the radio's NV memory; no ENG bootloader is necessary to continue to flash firmware images. Even if an “unrootable” OTA update is accepted, a device on which unrevoked forever has been run will still be able to reflash a custom recovery image.
What this means is that even if you unroot your phone with a stock non-rooted RUU, you will still be able to reflash a custom rooted rom to your phone.
When they were developed, unrevoked3 was just a way to get a custom recovery onto your phone, you needed to use unrevoked forever to actually root your phone.
This has been changed, unrevoked3 now also provides root.

Unrevoked3 previously, before 3.21, only rooted your phone and flashed a custom recovery. Just download unrevoked forever, flash it, and it will give you S-OFF.
Now that i have S-off my computer seems slower when tethering. Is that normal

My Desire is already rooted (using the old stage 1, stage 2 method) and I use Rom Manager to boot into Clockwork recovery.
A recent scare has made me want to permanently put Clockwork on my phone so I can access it from the boot menu.
Can I use Unrevoked to do this even though I am already rooted? It seems easier than using ADB.
Cheers.
Just connect your phone and run Unrevoked. Nothing more is needed. Done this several times to change between clockwork and amonra, works fine.
dont you think this thread belongs to the Desire Q&A forum? or the Desire General at most?

I tried doing this yesterday because I wanted Amon-Ra as well, but I got a misc partition error while running unrevoked. Ended up installing alpharev and flashing a recovery img that way. Any idea why that may've happened?
klaas4, no idea. Did you try to run it again? Never had a problem at all with unrevoked.
misc partition error happened to me as well (rooted way back with r4 method), also just did s-off instead. May as well, just as quick and easy as unrevoked anyway, and fastboot is great

My guess is that you didn't use unrevoked on first root. I just tried on my unrevoked desire and I can flash other recoveries over it using unrevoked.

Strangely enough, I did use unrevoked the first time, and still I got that message. The first time I ever rooted my Desire though, was using Modaco's method. Maybe that changed some things on that misc partition, but I used an RUU and rerooted using unrevoked when it came out.
Strange, but true. Anyway, I'm now happy and rooted, and using AlphaRev's fastboot commands to flash and erase the device directly is very helpful. Thanks anyway!
OK so my evo has the 2.10 bootloader and software version 3.70. 651.1. I tried using the Z4root method to temporarily root then flash Unrevoked Forever but hit a snag. Though the temp root works and I flashed clockworkmod and Ra recoveries, when I try to boot into recovery to flash Unrevoked Forever I just get the phone with the red triangle and exclamation mark. I'm assuming this has to do with having the newest bootloader from the latest ota but any guidance would be appreciated.
dont use z4root for the 2.10 bootloader...not a fool proof method of rooting...you need to return your evo back to stock by downloading a ruu from this site and plugging your evo into the computer and boot into boot loader and run whtat you downloaded on your desktop ....http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Supersonic
once you have the evo returned to stock, use this root method to root hboot 2.10
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
this by far is the best method to root hboot 2.10
What is the point of running the Ruu? Would running an older ruu change the hboot back or leave it as-is?
Running the ruu that came with your phone will return your phone back to stock out of the box so you have a clean slate to use the root guide I gave you a link to...the root guide I gave u is the only reliable method for hboot 2.10
The reason you are having problems rooting with unrevoked is because unrevoked does not work with hboot 2.02 or 2.10

I was rooted on 3.29 and unrooted so I could install the OTA 3.70. Unfortunately, hboot still shows S-OFF, so now I can't root or unroot. Will flashing the stock 3.70 RUU flip S-OFF back to S-ON so I can root again?

I tried unrevoked-forever-son.zip, but it looks like it runs from recovery, which I can't get into. When I try, I get the red exclamation point and can only get out with the volume up and power buttons.
So I decided to try and unroot my htc evo 4g with this tutorial i found:
[GUIDE] How to Unroot the EVO in 2 STEPS http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141&highlight=unroot
I began with the steps that just involved transferring PC36IMG.zip onto my root folder and booting into boot loader. I ran the update and everything and rebooted and my phone seemed to have factory reset. i went back to my bootloader tho to find that it still says "s-off" so i guess its still rooted? I then installed rom manager and when i go to app it says im not rooted. Im so lost and confused I assumed i need to flash a recovery so i used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026 and tried each way. none have worked.
Please help!!
Thanks
Your not rooted just s-off which makes it possible to root.. If you get s on and update your phone to a newer hboot then you can't root.... If you want to be rooted again and have a custom recovery your gonna have to flash a recovery and flash su

the only thing that can be flashed in the bootloader that will wipe your phone is a RUU. Flashing a recovery wont erase anything
I also did the bootloader thing and ended up getting a big "**unlocked**" and "**relocked**" symbol above the regular Supersonic EVT3 S-ON. So I dont where this leaves me when its talking about my warranty and getting the device repaired. I wanted to re-root my device but nothing is working now that I am HBoot 2.18

unlock bootloader then downgrade to a earlier version of android like 2.3.3 then accept the OTA and it will say LOCKED s-on http://themikmik.com/showthread.php...18-HBOOT-with-HTCDev-com-No-More-Watermark!-) dont do the root part after you downgrade to a earlier version
I just tried this today and it should work.. Use the "HEX" zip file from this forum. Rename it PC36IMG and place it on the root of your SD card..

Well the first thing you have to do in the unrooting procedure is downgrade the misc partition so you don't get that message . It's all outlined there nicely, and if you have any questions, it might be easier for you to post over there - they're all very helpful .

If you do an "adb reboot bootloader", and then run the RUU from your PC, you shouldn't have to press any buttons on the device.

WHAT?? I'm lost. First you said your Hboot is 6.17, then you said your phone says it has Hboot 2.16.
Sounds like your misc partition is screwed up from the different Hboots that your phone had, especially from the 5.07 OTA. If that's the case, there is no current RUU that will work for that (the 5.07 misc). It's there to prevent you from downgrading. You will need the Tacoroot method in order to downgrade your misc partition so that you can run your RUU again. It will give you a temp root so that you can run adb commands to downgrade that misc partition. It's in the rooting method guide from Captain Throwback's link above.

My apologies, i was in a rush earlier. My hboot is 6.17, not 2.16. I tried unrooting and did for the most part except getting hboot back to 2.18. In this process, the phone forced itself to update to the new 5.07 OTA that there is no RUU for so im screwed to that end. I am currently trying Tacoroot method but am having issues being stuck at the sprint screen bootloop so i cant run the flash_image command from the sdcard (since the phone isnt starting fully for it to be in "charge only mode"). Seems alot of ppl have that same issue but havent found a solution yet. Not sure if i just start over if it bootloops or not. I've tried 3 complete times now and still get stuck on the bootloop.
Ouch, that sucks. If you cannot boot into the operating system, then there might not be anything that you can do.

i just stumbled over this method.. unrevoked web site has a s-on tool, go to there site ://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever you will see the blah blah blah tutorial.. scroll down until you get down to:
How can this be removed or undone if I need to take my phone in for service?
Download the latest ''S-ON'' tool to a temporary location and follow the installation instructions above to run it. Once your phone is S-ON, you may lose root permanently if you install an official update.. download it to your phone.. recovery mode.. flash from zip.. poof.. S-ON
now head over to htcevohacks, ://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/how-to-unroot-your-htc-evo-4g/ get htc update rom utility for your phone.. that erases entire phone and and places sprints latest stock factory rom and everything back on your phone.. do all sprint updates.. and return to sprint and recieve your refurbished motorola photon.. sprint htc evo 4g has been dissed-continued.. oh yeah if you dont do it in that order.. you will loose your root with update utility.. which means you will have to use unrevoked3 to reroot and flash s-on tool .. done the right way its only two steps.. peace out
