Rooting help - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK so my evo has the 2.10 bootloader and software version 3.70. 651.1. I tried using the Z4root method to temporarily root then flash Unrevoked Forever but hit a snag. Though the temp root works and I flashed clockworkmod and Ra recoveries, when I try to boot into recovery to flash Unrevoked Forever I just get the phone with the red triangle and exclamation mark. I'm assuming this has to do with having the newest bootloader from the latest ota but any guidance would be appreciated.

dont use z4root for the 2.10 bootloader...not a fool proof method of rooting...you need to return your evo back to stock by downloading a ruu from this site and plugging your evo into the computer and boot into boot loader and run whtat you downloaded on your desktop ....http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Supersonic
once you have the evo returned to stock, use this root method to root hboot 2.10
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
this by far is the best method to root hboot 2.10

What is the point of running the Ruu? Would running an older ruu change the hboot back or leave it as-is?

Running the ruu that came with your phone will return your phone back to stock out of the box so you have a clean slate to use the root guide I gave you a link to...the root guide I gave u is the only reliable method for hboot 2.10
The reason you are having problems rooting with unrevoked is because unrevoked does not work with hboot 2.02 or 2.10

I was rooted on 3.29 and unrooted so I could install the OTA 3.70. Unfortunately, hboot still shows S-OFF, so now I can't root or unroot. Will flashing the stock 3.70 RUU flip S-OFF back to S-ON so I can root again?

In order for you to switch between s on and s off google search unrevoked forever and use their tool to toggle s on and s off

I had 2.02 hboot then I rooted and then derooted bc of issues. I noticed my hboot changed to 2.10. I followed the savior method and use z4root and all is well. I had zero issues.

I tried unrevoked-forever-son.zip, but it looks like it runs from recovery, which I can't get into. When I try, I get the red exclamation point and can only get out with the volume up and power buttons.

I had rooted previously and then updated and lost root. I still have superuser permission app.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have gone through many of the previous threads, but have not been able to figure out why the unrevoked method would not work for me considering my HBoot is not 2.02.

I do not have a custom recovery. can I still use unrevoked forever?
Sent from my PC36100 using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Maybe try downloading and running an official 3.29.651.5 RUU and then try unrevoked3 again to root.
yes if you do not have a custom recovery download a RUU from this link...http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Supersonic
after downloading the ruu...plug your phone in and run it and then it will revert your phone back to stock...then you can try agian to root
good luck
My phone is running stock. I have never flashed a ROM. I had used unrevoked previously. I did not save any of the settings. When I updated, I lost root. My HBoot is 0.97, so I am unsure why unrevoked will not work for me. I do not have the ability to change ROMs or for a custom recovery. I do not have ClockworkMod recovery. So I do not think I can use unrevoked forever, or use any other ROMs.

[G] having trouble getting s-on

i have tried every method i can find to get s-on after root with revolutionary. i have flashed the s-on zip and all it does is get rid of the red bar that says "revolutionary". it still say s-off. ive done it from a custom rom and a stock rom. done it through flashing and done it buy naming the zip pc36img it installs successfully but still shows s-off. any help is appreciated
#1. The s-on is NOT 4 revolutionary. Search for how 2 unroot revolutionaty root. Its the thread with a whole bunch of ??? at the end of the title. That should lead u toward the light.

Depends on what radio version he/she has. If I'm not mistaken the recent radio updates dont allow you to downgrade.

Can't get S-OFF via Revolutionary

I'm currently S-ON with hboot 2.10.0001.
When I try to use Revolutionary to get s-off it tells me that I don't have the right Hboot version.
So I checked the wiki for the tool and it says I need 2.16.0001 or 2.15.0001.
I tried flashing 2.16.0001 in recovery and it appears to work but at the top of my bootloader it still says 2.10.0001?
I'm not sure what the issue is.
P.S. ive been running miui for a while and do have some root just not unlocked nand i guess.

have you tried unrevoked also you cant flash roms without being nand unlocked (s-off)
UPDATE: Never mind. Unrevoked forever got me S-OFF
I can certainly flash roms and access recovery. No problems there.
I definitely have root (titanium backup works and I can issue superuser commands in terminal)
Is it possible that the bootloader is wrong?
BTW I cant flash different recoveries, it goes through but when I check I still have the same recovery (Amon RA).
I used a very old method of rooting (prior to GB). Everything has been cool but I did revert to stock everything briefly about 7 months ago.
When I took my phone in cause of a burnt out battery.
Can I use unrevoked even though I'm already rooted?
Don't want to mess anything up since everything is working except small things like adaway (requires s-off and won't work unless i use ADB from recovery).

since your on 2.3.5 you most likely have hboot 2.18. Your root method is going to be HTCdev.com. After you s-on unlocked with HTC dev you can either downgrade to a earlier version like froyo or GB and root with unrevoked or revolutionary or you can stay s-on unlocked but lose out on certain things because you wont be fully NAND unlocked(s-off) just unlocked s-on

I would rather use revolutionary as I've rooted a few other people's evo's with that method and it went fairly smooth. What im confused about is the hboot. I have to get the hboot to atleast 2.16.0001 and simply flashing a GB rom won't do that right? So do I need to find the radio thread and find an hboot file and can I even downgrade the hboot from 2.18 to 2.16 in order to use revolutionary to obtain s-off so that i can go back to what i was used to?

Simply flashing a rom wont affect radios ect. With S-on unlocked you CANT flash radios or hboots so you have to do a certain process in order to downgrade. You have to follow these steps exactly in order to downgrade. http://themikmik.com/showthread.php...18-HBOOT-with-HTCDev-com-No-More-Watermark!-)

Not trying to sound like an A-Hole here, but what you have to do is exactly what evo4gnoob saays. Theres certain steps you have to take. evo helped me root my device with the exact same setup you have flawlessly. Hes pretty sharp. Take his advice and let him teach you.

I have it to where it is currently running Froyo. I followed all of the instructions. I'm not trying to root it using unrevoked as after downgrading, the root access was taken away. The unrevoked app pushes the recovery and sits at a status of "installing unrevoked3 service..." and never finishes. That's where i'm stuck at. I'm not new to rooting, just didn't have to go about it this way the last time. If unrevoked keeps failing, then I will give revolutionary a try if it supports froyo.

I've never used unrevoked so I have no idea how it works. Always felt that revolutionary was more simpler. Revolutionary only supports hboot 2.16 and 2.15 so you can take a ota just make sure its not the 4.67 ota

I did the OTA which upgraded me to 2.33 and hboot 2.16 and tried running revolutionary. Installed the fast boot drivers as well. receiving this error:
Zerging Root... this might take a minute or so.. rawadb_open: remote closed the
connection looking for target "sync:"
Communications with phone unexpectedly interrupted. Try again.
Press (almost) any key to exit.
There is nothing using any usb port. This is becoming frustrating now

HTCDEV unlocks the bootloader
revolutionary and unrevoked give you root and s-off. I used revolutionary and I definetly have root as well as s-off.

How to root with already having custom recovery and superuser?

I originally had rooted the evo with revolutionary, but had to unroot to take it back.
Now when I try running revolutionary again it gives me an error. I still have its recovery and was able to install superuser. Superuser also shows me as not having root access.
I also have S-ON, it turned it on during the unroot process.
I've been at this all day with no luck.
I have HBoot 2.17
just lettin you know you're posting this in the wrong section. this is development. not Q&A. so be prepared to get flamed. with that bein said, let the flaming begin
whats the error you get with revolutionary?
Go to HTC's development web site and follow the instructions to unlock your bootloader. If you already have the Android SDK on your computer the whole process takes about 2min.

Hboot 2.17??
You either have 2.16, 6.17, or 2.18.
If you have 2.16, you would use Revolutionary again. You probably don't have this Hboot because Revolutionary did not work.
If you have 2.18, then you need to unlock the bootloader.
If you have 6.17, you need to run a stock RUU or PC36IMG with Hboot 2.16 or 2.18.
