I really want it, but searching this forum, it seems to be flooded with issues from LOS, slow 3G speeds, and battery. What do you guys think? And what are the chances of it getting ICS?! Coming from an OG EVO btw.
try it, you can always return it. i've never once got LOS. 3g sucks but that's sprint's network, not the phone. my battery life is really good. the phone takes forever to charge but i don't have any weird draining issues like some people.
sometimes i think xda has a tendancy to blow things out of proportion. i'd say give it a try, if it sucks you can exchange it and swap it out or go back to your evo.

No one can tell you what phone to get.
Here's some comments on your concerns:
1) The LoStkernel from chris41g almost completely eliminates LOS.
2) Slow 3g speeds are coming to an end with Sprint Network Vision
3) Battery life seems to be phone dependent. Some get great life, I for one get crappy life. As AOSP ROMs come out I have a feeling the battery issues will be resolved.
4) With AOSP, ICS will for sure come to this device. No question. No debate.

LOS = n/a: When I use a stock kernel; I had two instances when I didn't. Which is why I use stock now.
Slow 3G speeds = they are all about the same - 1.1-1.6Mbps. Was about the same on Evo 3D recently.
Battery = best battery ever. Twice battery of Evo 3D and Evo4G.
OP its a tiny % that have all these issues. Odds say you will ne fine my brother. Its a good phone.
I brought up the 3G speeds not because of Sprints network, but because some people said there were issues where they would get CRAPPY speeds on this device, and test on say an EVO, and get amazing speeds. Reminded me of when the Nexus S 4G came out, and had reception issues (particularly with 4G), so thats where my concern was. I figured im just going to go ahead and pick it up!
Woot! Lol

the only thing i HATE about this phone is the battery life. But like others have said, I'm just one of the few. The battery just drains like crazy, losing 12%/hr over night. It's insane. I'll be rooting it in a few days but that' hasn't been a verified fix. And i'm too cheap to get a replacement (refurb) from Sprint for $35 lol.
just remember, people with the problems are going to be the most prominent and loudest.
how often will someone make a post like " my phone is great, absolutely nothing to complain about!"?

I'd say if you had Sprint, this is argubaly th best phone you can get. Those problems aren't a big deal and you won't find another phone without problems. These problems you say are really things that will be fixed in prob 3 months?
So best buy would be the best bet? Even if the upgrade is on a total different account? I just dont want to lose the discount on the phone!
Mines worked great until I rooted it. I went from never having LoS to random LoS

Both of mine LOS'd from the get go. In fact the First one LOS'd on the way home from the Sprint store. It's a really fast, really pretty phone....If Sam/Sprint give it a little love it would be the best phone they have. Until then, I wouldn't recommend this phone.
Rooted phone does not cause the LOS!! Rooted phone just makes u to access more stuffs with ur phone than unrooted phone.

Currently a Nexus-S 4G owner, thinking of getting the GS II, but keep reading so many issues with WiFi...Network/Radio...SMS text problems...I am scared to upgrade to the S II, until an update/patch is released to fix these issues I have read about.
Also my Nexus-S has pretty crap WiFi signal already, in my house with a great WiFi setup, it drops way too often, my EVO 4G was rock solid always connected.
Any news or opinions on this ?

Honestly, I haven't had ANY of these problems. Maybe I got one from a different batch because I was backordered.
My phone seemlessly goes from WiFi to 3G and back again without any intervention from me, in weak OR strong coverage areas. To my knowledge, all my texts have gone through.
I just rooted late last night (with the stock kernel), and so far I haven't had any issues, either.
No issues what so ever trust me. Ask stock phone. Always on wifi when at home. Wifi turns on and connects super quick. text calls come thru right away.

I agree 100% with your sentiment IRT the thread...but, I had 2 LOS in the 5 or 6 days I was rooted. I rooted and had another 2 over 2 or 3 days. Stock kernel reinstalled and I've been good so far, but, I think blaming the kernel is foolish. The problem occurred before I rooted and after I rooted.
Does the fact that I am now rooted with a stock kernel and haven't had the problem suggest to you that only rooted stock-kernels are without fault?
You guys know that you can have everything stock, including kernel/rom/recovery, except the rom would also be rooted by addition of su binary/apk/busybox?
I haven't had any los or any other severe issues before or after I rooted the phone.
It may be that since I live in a small university town, my towers aren't getting upgraded to rev b, but yours are. These issues may not have anything to do with the phone at all. Maybe it has something to do with the sprint maintenance timing.
Or maybe it's because some people bought their phones from third-party retailers, and the phones weren't properly activated.
Or maybe it's some commonly used app that people with problems have installed, and I and others don't have installed.
I've had minimal to no issues personally. And I've had none while using stock Kernel. Using i9000 kernel I had a few LOS, but infrequent.
I also owned the Nexus S...and this is BY FAR a better device from a connectivity comparison.
Remember that the complaints you see are misleading...in that people are more apt to post about an issue, versus those that don't. It's human nature.
rooting or not has NOTHING TO WITH THE ISSUES!!
- I have had a stock phone since the day it came out, and have "watchdog lite" installed, watchdog alerts me about 10-15 times a day that "suspend", "events/0", and "base system" in my phone are using over 50% CPU while the phone is sleeping... LOL, it JUST happened again while i was typing this...
- also had the LOS issues 2 times, has to restart the phone to get signal again
- once, i was in a call, and when i went to "end" the call, i could not click the end button... the other side wud NOT hang up because it was customer service, they r not allowed 2 hang up on a person... so i had 2 restart the phone to fix this
- sometimes i click the power button to wake the screen, n nothing happens for about 5 seconds... so i click the button again, and the screen turns on and back off right away... n den i have 2 click the button a 3rd time to wake the phone...
- sometimes app just close randomly, and if you try to open the app again, its begins from the VERY BEGINNING, so w.e. u were doing in the app is lost... this sucks for games, and if ur in the middle of something important
- when the phone is on charge, the keyboard sometimes acts weird, typing letters u never click... and also u have 2 touch the screen 2wice sometimes 2 make selections... only happens when on charge, u take it off charge, n its back 2 normal right away
cant think of anything else as of right now... but there are some issues in the phone that can most likely be fixed either via root, or thru a sprint update...
I had the nexus s 4g and due to the antenas that phone was practically unusable especially on wifi. The gs2 doesnt have any of those issues. This is the first phone since the evo 4g that has impressed me snd i have owned the evo 3d and photon as well.

I seem to be having an issue with battery draw whenever wifi is on.
I'm not rooted, my phone is 100% unmodded. I haven't even installed a different launcher.
Im hoping for an update so my games dont continue to crap the bed 10 mins into them. Nothing like trying to lvl up in nova and never finishing an online match.

LOS can occur with or without the root. I've only experienced it once but it was in an area with good coverage and no one else with Sprint phones at my office encountered it when I did. It only happened once but I do NOT have a modified ET4G - it is stock. There is a detailed thread on this on android forums and it can occur with or without a root. Apparently it was listed on android forums or android police that this is a known issue. I don't use wifi but it seems to be a common issue for people using wifi from what has been reported.
That being said, I would highly recommend this phone to anyone looking to get a phone.

Yeah... you would think that being unable to handle games for more than 10 minutes would have been something that the engineers would have caught during development...
I have had no issues either. I had one LOS after I flashed the rooted kernel. Went right back to stock kernel and no issues since. And none before the rooted kernel either.
Hey everyone... this phone has gotten excellent reviews, and I was psyched to replace my tired Diamond with it until I saw all the problems people have been having with it (LOS, battery drain, gaming, etc.), especially considering it's Samsung. Thinking of getting a photon or 3vo instead, or just waiting it out for something better (yeah, i know it's always around the corner). But of course the people who have issues are more likely to post than those who don't. So how many of you actually haven't had major problems? Is this thing worth the risk? And does anyone know if TEP would cover this if the problems laid low until after the 14 day trial period?
No issues here. I came from the 3vo and photon, do yourself a favor and get the epic.
I have had it since launch day, no problems, in fact this phone is the only one that I have had that I haven't insta rooted... because it's just bad ass, I'm in no rush
I had no problems for 6 days till I rooted, then I had LOS 4 times the first day. Went back to stock kernel and now 2 days in no problems.

I have LOS issue at least once a day, but mine can be fixed by going into airplane mode and coming out of it. Don't believe all the hype, this phone DOES have issues, but it's still a great phone.
Also, I would mention check out sprint's forums and android central to get a good overall view of the connection issues on this phone. It seems Samsung has once again released a phone with buggy modem software. It will get ironed out, its just a matter of when, be it 1 month from now or 6 months from now.
Just as a personal example, I get 300-400kbps less on 3g than my girlfriend gets on her evo 4g in the same exact spot, using speedtest.net app at the same exact time. I have repeated this test multiple times at various spots in my city just to confirm.
I hate to be a naysayer, I love the phone and don't intend on returning it. But keep that in mind, you will be getting a phone that is less than perfect on day one. Once we get an actual update and ruu from Samsung, then the real Roms and Kernels will start rolling out. For now, we are just playing a waiting game it seems.

My experience as well.... may just be coincidence, but no problems while unrooted.
I love it when people post " I was fine until I rooted and then all these problems, what's wrong with the phone." Well duh have you ever thought it was your rooting.
Have had it since day one. No real problems to speak of. Some people are just way too picky. Talk with a non-geek about the phone and there is nothing wrong, talk with a geek and there are all sorts of nit pick. Honestly some of these people are so anal it makes me wonder. The Epic 4G Touch is a great phone with a lot going for it. Had a Photon and that phone had a lot of issues that prevented it from fulfilling it's most basic purpose, to send and receive phone calls. *ugh*
Ive had this phone since day one, haven't had a single issue with it. No LOS, no gaming bugs, no force closes, nothing. Battery life is nothing short of stellar, and overall performace is pretty much without parallel in the mobile world. This is easily the best phone in the us market right now and you'll be extremely happy with it should you decide to get it. I had an EVO 3D for a month and absolutely HATED it. Get the ET4G, you won't be sorry.

I have had the phone for 8 days now, I am impressed with the battery life, I leave it on wifi all day long at work and the phone roams with 1 bar of signal. This building is terrible as far as cell service goes. Even so, I leave work and my battery is ~ 40-50%. I usually unplug it around 4:00am and leave work at 5:30pm. I did get the no smoking circle yesterday but I was in the basement of our library, I'm pretty sure that wsa legit and my signal came back when I walked outside. This phone is running phenominal for me, it is by far the best phone I have ever owned or played with.
I went from: POS Crackberry (Curve 8320), MyTouch 3g, Samsung Moment, Evo Shift, E4GT
have the phone since day one, no problems at all. first smartphone that has no issues for me. and its fast.
Same for me. Unrooted zero issues great battery life super fast.

No issues here since purchase on launch day. Not one single LOS, good signal strength in the areas I frequent here in San Diego, respectable 3G data speeds by Sprint standards, excellent battery life, no unexpected heat, nothing.
14 days is tomorrow, so I'm expecting the thing to completely friggin explode on Saturday. I've never had a smartphone run this well out of the box. I'm a bit floored to be honest.
Get it. I'm coming from Evo3D (Evo and NS4G before that). It it well worth it. I haven't had an issue with it at all. It is the only phone I have had that I have not felt the need to root....yet.
No issues here save for a WiFi connection that dies every now and then, but I think it's an issue with my router.
Otherwise it's by far the best phone I've ever used. It just works.
Still stock, haven't found an overwhelming reason to root.
I have to agree with everyone, i have had like 20 different phones this year and all have been rooted the day i got them except this one, its just so damn fast, but i expect that will change omce cm7 is out for it
I've yet to encounter a single problem with this phone. First time I haven't been rooted within days of buying one too. It really amazes me that I'm satisfied with a smart phone right out of the box.
This phone has worked perfectly out of the box. So well that there's almost no point in rooting or modding it. Battery, GPS, connectivity, everything...
In fact, I didn't have any issues until I rooted it and installed a modded ROM. After that random LOS after resuming from sleep. Guess what? Returning to stock eliminated that problem. So the issues people are facing are from messing around and modding things not from the hardware or the stock software.
Anyway, now I'm on the stock kernel with root access without issues and I'll probably stay this way for a while until a nice stable rom comes along
Maybe its just me, but when I first got the phone I had no problems.. Now after rooting and flashing custom roms I get random freezes, crazy battery drain and the infamous LOS.. and contrary to popular belief it has something to do with root.. I didn't root my phone or anything for at least a week after having it and none of the problems started until after.. Mine ran great fresh out the box for sure, but thats also because it was fresh and had no apps installed etc lol.
Some roms seem to work better than others. Running Starbust 1.2 with zedo's 4.1 kernel and it's running absolutely great now, better than unrooted IMO.
Could be grass in greener on the other side syndrome, try unrooting and see if you still feel that it runs better stock. With ODIN it's pretty quick and easy to jump back from rooted to not and back again.
I will always be rooted because I love trying out new things and custom roms and overclocking/undervolting etc.. it's fun, like a hobby for sure. And sometimes that hobby especially with beta stuff isnt that stable lol!
Just having adfree and wifi tethering is more than enough reason for me to root. But when the really cool custom roms start coming out, it's gunna be on like donkey kong
I did run a rooted rom with the stock kernel, and I have to say I like zedo's better.
My 2 cents

My stock-rooted E4GT is working just fine. No LoS, no random reboots, no freezing up, no locking up... no bloat, great battery life, no BS.
I had a ton of issues with LOS and some random reboots on Zedomax's root kernel. Flashed to the stock + CMR and havent had an issue since.
I'll be serious now.
Aside from me disagreeing that root is the cause of LOS issues (I got them stock too) this is all part of the fun of modifying your gadgets.
Fun? Yeah, I said fun. These are insanely complex devices and it is still very early in their development cycle. If you aren't game then style out of it for a while until things mature. I agree that LOS is not caused by rooted kernal. But, I did experience LOS alot more often than stock kernal. When I got the phone I stayed unrooted for a little over a week. I experienced 2 LOS during that time period. Once I finally rooted I was experiencing LOS @ least 3 times a day. LOS also drains the battery like crazy. One night I left the phone off the charger with 100% battery life. When I woke up, the phone was in LOS and only had 40% battery life. Well, today last night I finally switched to stock kernal. So far today no LOS.
I digress. Stock rom works perfect but I needed so mods that require root. The battery percent mod, wireless tether, and roam control. I think I'll wait for an AOSP rom before I try anything different roms.
I've tried all the currently available kernals for ths phone. I've rooted and unrooted. Right now, i'm on stock rooted. I'm still experiencing LOS, but it seems less frequent than when I was on custom kernals. It could be other criteria, though. I haven't tried any of the ROMs, only because I want a stock ROM to flash, if something goes wrong. I don't remember the epic taking this long to get the stock ROM available to us. My memory may be slipping, though.

this is why I will wait another week or 2 before rooting....this phone is awe sum as stock, but, like any newly released phone, it takes a few weeks before all the truly revolutionary stuff gets developed.
Most devs have a real job, a family, and a real life, so you can't really expect flashing "nirvana" only a week or so after a phone comes out.

I'm stock since day 1, when the phone first released, and I get LOS once a day. It's killing me not to have root, but I am not modding unless there is a factory RUU available straight from Samsung. Personally, and to no discredit to the developers, I don't trust the stock rom pulled from another phone. This phone is just a bit too new for me to be permanently altering it without a 100% safe way back. The OG Epic was made almost unbrickable, so it's reasonable to assume that a year from now, we will be rolling like pigs in **** with cool stuff to flash.
But I get what you are saying, and honestly, the community did not explode like I thought it would. Seems to be more HTC fans these days then Samsung, and just judging from Samsung's post launch support, or lack thereof, I can understand why...
Furthermore, my 3G speeds were horrible day 1 and continue to suck balls. Most times at work I can't even browse the market because of timeouts. 4G seems to work good though, and that's the only reason I haven't just returned this phone yet.

This is sprint's official forum, and they are just now admitting to the crappy radio implementation on this phone. Should have seen this coming a mile away, but honestly I was just too busy looking at this gorgeous 4.52" AMOLED+ screen to notice...
This is the first phone I've had were I don't feel the need to root, and I wouldn't have rooted until it had been perfected more.
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII EPIC 4g Touch on XDA Premium!
my main reason for rooting was a few apps i had that needed root. as well as the battery percentage
Well, I broke down and got the Epic Touch. This is my 3rd android, and so far, it's been 3/3 Sammy. Funny thing is, when owning the Moment, I swore I'd never get another Sammy. Ha! I moved on to the Epic 4G, and was actually pretty happy with that phone, except for battery life. Well, the new shiny came out (I call it my precious...) and I had an opportunity to get it, and here I sit. Man this is a nice phone! Love the battery life, but kind of miss the narrower, chunkier 4G. (I know... that's counter to everyone else... But I liked the ability to rest the phone on my shoulder while talking if I had by 3500mA battery in there)
Anyway, howdy all! Just figured I'd make my greetings here. I'm an old hand at Android phones (Lord knows I installed enough ROMS on that damned Moment) and using the wonderful mods from the devs here, and look forward to a long run of great add ons in the months and maybe even years to come!
I know the feeling. I was never a fan of Samsung phones but I now own the Epic 4g touch, and a Galaxy tab 10.1. I was strictly a HTC fan but Samsung has made me a believer...

Even with the crappy updates im rolling with Sammy.
The Moment actually turned into a great phone once the guys over at SDX got 2.2.2 running on it. No more data lock! I'm convinced it was a kernel issue.
I'm hoping that the devs can come to the rescue again, because the ET has the same issue, only we're calling it LOS instead of data lock!
Samsung has a crappy record for updating their phones, and Sprint's updates always address things that either were never a problem, or don't actually fix the problem they claim to be fixing.
Its all about 3rd party developers, and having to void our warranties to get a working phone!

It's not the same issue. Every moment I've ever touched had the airplane mode issue. I went through over 10 at least. My first Epic Touch had the LOS issue and after getting that replaced I haven't seen it since. I go into areas of low coverage, no coverage, rooming, wifi on and off and no LOS. My moment would have done this 50 times at least under the same conditions.

Ditto here man. I avoided any Sammy like the plague and always liked HTC, but Sense was just getting old to me. I am loving this thing and I am not real sure that I care too much about Sammy's really wretched update history. I'll be rooting once ICS gets a stable release.
I have only had LOS once and it was at a football tailgate on over taxed towers in a really weak signal area....so I can't say is my phone or its everywhere.
Same boat. The Moment told me I'd be going somewhere else next, and then the Epic 4G hit and I was back with Samsung. But I had enough issues with it that I was convinced I'd go HTC or Motorola next. And here I am, back with Samsung, and so far glad I stuck around.

Did you ever flash Froyo onto your Moment?
I seriously hadn't had a lockup from February until I activated my ET on 9/22... And that included traveling from Milwaukee to the middle of the woods up north, going from roam to network to roam SEVERAL times along the way.
The reason why I think its the same issue is because, like the Moment, when you get the lockup on the ET, you can then manually go INTO airplane mode, but it refuses to let you come back out again (the option is grayed out). That's exactly the way it manifested on the Moment.

Same thing here, same three phones. I don't know how they keep suckering me in.
I am having doubts about this phone already though. Hopefully they will be fixed in an update. I fear the update will be too far down the road though.

I gave up the moment when the Epic was released. Back then we didn't have 2.2 for the moment. So by the time I was no longer using the device.
I understand your comparison. I only disagreed because of the nature of the error. I could force the moment into airplane mode any time that I wanted. So when I got my og epic I did everything I could do to get into airplane and succeeded a few times sadly enough, though it was much harder. When I got the epic touch my first one had the LOS. My second one refused to do it. I'm not saying it isn't possible. I just couldn't force the error like I could with the moment and with the og epic.
I'm not saying my phone doesn't have the LOS bug. I just haven't seen it. My first one did. I did the same things. I did the same things and went around the same areas and haven't seen this bug on my new device yet.
I lost my point. I just wanted to say that the LOS bug is no where near as common and at least it gives you a error that you can see when you have it. The moment will just look at you and smile and you'll go through your day wondering why nobody was calling you...
I'm right there with ya OP, my 1st Android device was the Moment, then I had the Epic 4G, then I got a Galaxy Tab 10.1, and now I have a Epic 4G Touch. I actually like Samsung for the most part, definitely not a perfect company, but I've never experienced a perfect company ever.

Unfortunately, I got my moment about 1 month before they discontinued it, so I was stuck with it longer than a lot of folks.
I've been fortunate, and only encountered the problem twice so far with the ET. I'll be traveling up north this weekend, and we'll see how it goes. If I'm unable to get data (where I always could with the lowly Moment), there will be some words exchanged with Sprint.

The same exact thing happened to me!
Also, I was talking to a Samsung rep, and he said there are some "really cool things" coming that you will be able to do between your Samsung phone and your tablet.
The coolest thing about the OG epic was seeing modem leaks pop up every few months. I know that it has only been a month since this phone has dropped, but let's face it, the modem software on the Epic Touch sucks donkey balls.
It's downright terrible. If I didn't buy the phone through wirefly and get stuck with their 180 days phone lock deal, I would just say screw it and go back to my OG epic. EH17 was lightning fast and smooth as silk, and I got ridiculous battery life with it, and I only got maybe 1 random reboot every other day, which didn't bother me in the slightest.
I keep checking samfirmware in vain, but seriously I am on my last straw with this phone. I don't see the point in owning an internet phone if the one thing you can't do on it is get on the internet.
Anyone else feel the same?

Excuse my ignorance...
Why do the modem drivers do for us?
Is it specifically for hooking to a PC or do they increase our performance on our phones?
Thanks again,
RR

These are firmware updates for the phone's radio. Theoretically they can increase speed and signal stability.
