Desire: Connecting to WiFi Unsuccessful [SOLVED]

Hey everyone,
I just got a brand new HTC Desire yesterday and I can't seem to connect my phone to the internet via WiFi. I don't know why but I entered the right password and everything... Every time it goes 'Obtaining IP address from (router name)', but ends up unsuccessful. I tried forgetting and doing it again but still does not work. Anyone have any ideas? Please let me know what information I should post to solve this matter quicker. I'm running on 2.1 update1

It seems that most HTC Android phones are very fussy about the routers they will reliably connect to. Whether it's a really a phone problem, or the router that is at fault isn't really known.
Try changing the channel and/or encryption method on your router, as this may help.

Solution
I found my way around solving this issue. Here's how I solved my problem:
Problem: Unable to connect to WiFi. Able to scan network but 'Unsuccessful' everytime WiFi attempts to 'Obtain IP Address from (network name)'.
Solution:
1) Press Menu key under WiFi window on HTC Desire
2) Choose Advanced Settings
3) Under IP Settings, Check 'Use Static IP'
4) Insert all the information below that: IP address, Gateway, Netmask, DNS1, DNS2 (it should all be in numbers)(I only had one DNS1, so I typed the same numbers in DNS2)
You can get the information via Laptop:
Right Click on your network>select 'Status'>select 'Details' under signal quality>All the information you need
5) Once all information is filled in, press 'Return' key and it SHOULD connect successfully.
Additional Notes: I selected the WiFi network and entered the passkey before I did all the steps above.
Hopefully this helps those who had the same problem I did!

Haven't you just given your Desire the same IP address as your laptop??
If your wireless network is set up to use DHCP, you shouldn't need to do any of this.

I dont understand why also but IT WORKS! Rightfully, mine is running on dynamic IP. Will it have any problem connecting again once IP address is refreshed?

A BIG THANK YOU..have been trying to connect with all possibilities minus setting up the static as Im using dynamic which doesnt make sense.

Keep in mind that you have to give all your devices on that network then a static ip-adres, because otherwise you run the risk of another device already having the ip you assigned to your phone.

So is there a valid (non-static IP) solution????
I just got this problem both at home and at other places as well.
I can't find any errors in Android, and wifi scans as it should, it connects but as the topic starter stats, it can't assign an IP-adress!
Static IP is not a solution for me, nor should be for anyone, this is basic function that should work with out issues.
Please advise if there is any, thanks in advance!

I was able to connect but noted that my phone wouldn't even completely charge, got hot and emptied in about an hour, so I installed "Startup Auditor" and" JuiceDefender" but somehow these seem to have broken the Wifi. I uninstalled JuiceDefender and there's nothing disabled in Startup Auditor that could explain it. But the phone can see Wifi points, but can't connect.
Wassup?

Of course it's possible that as the phone is rooted, juicedefencer changed something as root and I have no idea how to change it back.

[Q] Froyo WIFI problem with dynamic IP

Since installing Froyo on my Desire, I can not connect to my local wireless router (Belkin N1 Wireless router) when using a dynamic IP address. Previously (on eclair) this was no problem what so ever.
When I try connecting, it keeps saying it's trying to aqcuire an IP address, but nothing happens.
When I check the routers overview of connected devices (DHCP client list), I see this:
ip address: 192.168.2.4
host name: android_f07d6a45ÿÿÿÿþÿÿÿ (yup, strange characters)
I tried connecting to my macbook via WIFI, and that worked without a hitch.
After restoring factory settings on my Desire, factory settings on the router, installing newest router firmware... I tried again, but to no avail!
Then I gave the Desire a static IP address and presto; I could connect to my wireless router without a problem.
In conclusion:
Before Froyo: connecting to wireless router with dynamic IP addresses = no problem
With Froyo: can only connect to router with static IP and Desire's hostname contains strange characters
Most other wifi networks seems to work.
Anyone else having similair problems? Is the Desire's strange hostname the problem?

This was a problem for me with Eclair too, and yes I'm still experience it, the only solution I found before was "wifi-fixer" or what ever the app was called (it's found via the market). But it did not work all the time... :-(
Update: I can connect to Dynamic-IPs without noticing any strange Chars. But its the "unable to..." that's similar to your's.

can you tell me how your exact PHONE config's are?

These settings should be different from router to router
I can give you mine, but I doubt it will help you:
IP: 192.168.2.4
Gateway: 192.168.2.1
Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0
DNS 1: 192.168.2.1
DNS 2: BLANK
Depening on your router and settings, you might have to change the ".2." in all of these to ".0."
The "4" in the IP address is also free for you to chose (must be available though)

[NEO] Strange wifi problem. Connects but no internet.

Hello. I have xperia neo for 1 week. It is great phone and great upgrade from my X8 but i see a strange wifi problem. My firmware is latest version - 4.0.A.2.368.
At my home phone connects fine to my wireless network and everything is stable. I do not see any disconnects, reboots or other problems. My router is linksys wrt320N and i connect at wireless N speed - 72Mbps.
When i try to connect to the wireless N network at my office the phone connects fine but i do not have internet access. I have IP assigned by the router, network is shown as connected but i do not have connectivity. I tried with 3 different browsers and with the market and nothing connects. At the same time i can connect with my laptop to the same network and i have internet. My colleagues with other phones also connect and have internet.
I tried setting static IP address on the phone but this did not help. I read that if i set static IP in router's settings assigned to the mac address of the phone this will help. Unfortunately i can not test this because i do not have access to router's settings. Also at my home i did not make such settings and everything is working fine.
Previously i have seen this problem with my X8 and the same work wifi network but it was not always present. It was present with some custom firmwares and not with others.
If you have any ideas or have seen this problem please help.

Having the same device from Globul I never had such problems for the 2 weeks I'm using it. I had some disconnects but i put the blame on my router.

I think I've found the issue (by facing by myself)
The version neo is shippe (2.3.2) has a serious bug on AES encription.
Actually only the upgrade to 2.3.3 (no clue about upcoming 2.3.4) can fix the WPA/AES issue.
So the actual solutions are:
or change your wifi securty to WEP, updathe the phone via OTA
or use the Windows Software and update to 2.3.3.
Please note that if you use the Control Power widget it has been removed in 2.3.3

This was my problem when I had just bought my Arc.My phone couldn't surf the internet with my personal wifi network although I tried to use many browsers and also Android market. Then I reset and reinstalled my router, everything works well ^^

Ask your office IT staff to do a simple power cycle on the router and try connecting again. That may solve the problem.

Anyone have a favourite wi-fi static ip manager?
(I'm on stock gb.)

At home, I have to set a static ip or I can't connect. So far this is (sort of) ok - I turn off static ip when I leave, turn it back on when I return. The settings are remembered. However, if I have to start setting different static ip at different locations, this is going to quickly become a PITA.
In another building, 4 different SSID's available, the phone just goes into a disconnect / connect cycle on 3 of them (1 a TP-Link router, other 2 on a Cisco Valet M10) - never getting an IP. I'm guessing I'm running into the same static ip problem there, and need to set different static ip's depending upon which SSID I want to connect to.
Anyone have a favourite app for per SSID static ip setting / remembering?

Why the need for static IP? DHCP should work great. I use DHCP on my phone and never have to worry. Is it a security issue?

D'OH!. Sorry, left that part completely out ...
Hardware issues of some sort, between routers and phone.
e.g. At home, everything is happy, non-phone, wired and wireless. With phone, with DHCP, it never connects. As soon as I set static, off it goes.
I agree, other places, leave DHCP, and all is fine.
But not at home, and now, I suspect, at this other location.
Various threads in various places seem to acknowledge the problem, it's not limited to particular phones or routers as far as anybody can tell, and the problem hasn't been pinned down to any particular cause / solution. One thread ponders whether it's an 802.11n-only router issue, but that isn't my case. I wonder if it has to do with particular router chipsets, but haven't enough information to draw any correlation.
So, I'm thinking it's worth trying static IPs at the other location, and thought I'd ask if anyone had a favourite app.
(It being all too easy to drown in useless results at the store, much like any internet search.)

Unfortunately I would say the majority of people use DHCP. If I were you I would try to fix the DHCP compatibility issue with your router. Try updating your firmware on it or lowering it to an older version. If your router supports it try DD-WRT (http://www.dd-wrt.ca/site/index) You can always also change your router but that has a cost associated to it, so try the free stuff first. Perhaps you have already done all this and I am just talking to hear my own voice (text). In that case disregard my message and carry on....

is that it doesn't all of the time.
And such an app is a diagnostic step towards detecting if a static/DHCP issue is in play.
Already running OpenWRT on my own router, Netgear WNDR3700 {dual-band, gigabit} (that needs the static IP, and I'm good with that).
Of course, I have no control over the routers in other locations.

[Q] Verizon Lg G3 Won't connect to wifi no matter what.

So basically I can't connect to wifi and I have tried EVERYTHING from static routes to different networks and routers, different roms, complete factory rom/firmware resets. I just can't connect to wifi, nothing else is wrong, and I think it may have to do with the fact that in my "Advanced WiFi" setting its shows my phone Ip address as unavailable.
Any help, please?!

Is there a way to manually assign a phone Ip address, in the terminal or in some coding somewhere? Because I feel like that's the problem... And no I don't just mean using static connections, that doesnt work

Possible solution.
On your pc go to cmd and go to ipconfig /flush dns. I don't remember precise command but something like this. It'll reset all your addresses assigned to your other devices. On your phone do forget network. Then try to reconnect. Your ip will be assigned automatically.
If it doesn't work check in your router what wireless protocol you have. You know b,c,g,ac,n. Try to set to n only.
Another thing there's possibility your router is set to accept connections only from known devices in which case you'll have to add the phone automatically.

I have an idea...There is an update to Lollipop just released that fixes the wifi problem. At least for Verizon...release last few days.

hmmm, if it's the update that comes from the vzw installer when you plug in the phone, then i already tried and no such luck :/
My phone just needs a damn ip adress!

Could it have to do with certificates?

Did you find the solution? I have the same issue, although sometimes I can connect to the wifi network but it only works for a while
