Is there away to flash the updated 5.0.2.6 CWM without the kernel that comes with it. Zedomax V3 kernel have been running pretty good without LOS (maybe 1 or 2) But would love to run the new CWM with it, does anybody have any ideas or can it be done.
EDIT: Or if I of the DEV's can separate they so we can flash one of the other, Thanks... Just an Idea
From what I've been reading on threads, you can only install CWM 5.0.2.6 through the kernel that bubby323 provided. I'm sure you've read this already but I'll provide the link just in case. This is the only method as of now i.e. you can't separate cwm and the kernel.

I'm new here, but I hope I didn't tell you something you already knew. I'm using the LoStkernel, but is there a strong incentive to update to the newest cwm?

Not trying to be an ass here, but if you haven't Google searched or searched within XDA about these things, you should not even worry about them. The S3 is plenty fast on stock.

Best advice for installing a ROM is to follow the instructions in the first post of that thread. A nandroid is performed in cwm recovery. It's simply a backup of where your phone is right now. It is performed under backup and restore (not actually called a nandroid).
thank you. well his first post is fairly confusing. from my understanding i run CWM, backup, flash, recover?
do i then need to root it?
ROM should be rooted already.
Bit of a newb as well, best way to install a ROM;
Root using the no trip method stickied at the top of the dev forum.
Download and install goo manager and use this to install twrp, a great alternative to cwm.
Download and place the ROM of choice on the sdcard, and boot into recovery (home+vol up+power)
Perform a back up, then wipe and install!!

You need to root your stock ROM to be able to install twrp. Any ROM you flash will come prerooted ;p
I literally just accepted the FH13 OTA update yesterday morning. As far as I can tell, I'm back to being unrooted and no custom recovery.
I've browsed the threads here about how to not brick your phone and upgrading and all that but to someone who doesn't flash a custom ROM every day it's a bit confusing. Every other line in one of the threads was striked out. I remember somewhere someone saying that installing CWM on ICS is a bad, bad thing. I don't even want to try it as of right now.
Can someone just explain to me, briefly, the steps to go form stock FH13 to CM9/10. I don't even need links to threads, I can do the digging. I just want to be absolutely sure of the steps. Like, do I have to go back to GB first? Can I backup my current system before I do any of this with Nandroid? Can I even install CWM on ICS?

Hey, I know you said you don't want any links, but they are kinda tricky to find. Currently, the most reliable way to do this is to use odin (or one-click) to downgrade your phone to an earlier build, and then use the absurdly stable recoveries and kernels there to upgrade once again. The way you should do this is as follows:
1. Use Odin one click to go back to EL29 (which is gingerbread)
2. Install a kernel with a recovery through the use of either Odin or Mobile Odin (I have provided a link for sfhub's Odin GUI)
3. Reboot your phone and give it a couple minutes.
4. reboot into recovery and flash away
The link to odin one click to get back to EL29 (provided by sfhub):http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
The link to Odin GUI to root EL29 (provided by sfhub): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
If you have any questions, please ask, and also be sure to watch the instructional videos provided by qbking77 in the above links. If this is your first time using odin, it can be somewhat nerve wracking, but be patient, take it slow and follow the directions. Good luck
EDIT: to answer the other questions in your post:

Well, you can use Mobile Odin to flash a kernel that has a working recovery, but for that you would need to have root. You could however use Odin(on the computer) to flash a kernel with a custom recovery, but It wouldn't be as reliable as flashing back to el29 and using that recovery. HOWEVER, a lot of people have been claiming that the newer recoveries for ics are safe and can be used.

Well, you would need a working recovery, so refer to the previous question.
Today I used ODIN to flash agats 0.5.4 kernel, which I then wiped and installed CM9. I think you need a rooted rom in-order to do what I did though.

I don't know if you check on some youtube tutorial, If not go to QBking77 channel, he has the latest and newest way to re-root your phone. Take your time and read. you probably know what to do, but lack the confidence to go thru with it, take your time and check out some youtube videos.
I was wondering this my self thanks.
Freeroot, thank you so much!
I never expected all of that. Every time I have ever asked a question I would usually get short answers and scolded for not doing the searching myself. I had hoped that I would get a better response if I said not to bother with links.
Seriously, thank you very much! Above and beyond! :good:

Hey, I'm just glad you posted this in the right section. Hope it all worked out for you!
I just got the new G3 and am looking into rooting, but I'm not interested in using any ROMs.
I've done the same with my Epic 4g for the last few years, but have run into issues at times.
My question is, will I run into any issues if I just run a rooted, non-ROMed phone? If so, are there things I can do to prevent them?
I'm only looking to be able to freeze bloatware, use adblocks, get free hotspot, use backup utilities, etc. But I don't want to run into issues with sprint updates, etc.
Basically wondering what the best way to utilize a rooted, non-ROMed G3 would be.
Thanks for the help.

Easiest way without issues would probly be to get all the sprint updates before you root. Once ur up to date flash CWM or Twrp thru Odin and flash the Team epic root from recovery file while in there. Then if you dont want the custom recovery flash the stock one back after your rooted.

Thanks for the quick reply, after looking through and reading about the FreeGS3 ROM, I'm thinking of going with Twrp and flashing FreeGS3.
Though, all I'm seeing for Twrp is installing through GooManager, which requires a root. I know how to use the CWM tar in odin and flash the Team Epic root, but I'm not sure how to get twrp on before cwm.
Is there a tar file for twrp like the cwm one used in QBKing77s root videos?

I guess cwm and twrp share the same partition.
Will just root using cwm and install twrp over goomanager.

I need to migrate to JB but am unable to find any compatible rom. I am using Bell version I747m. Please any suggestions. Currently using kyan 1.5
also would like help with updating CWM, currently using 5.0.4 version.
Merci!!!
First question would be do you want Touchwiz or more of a pure android build (jellybean without touchwiz)? Anything in this forum (the AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus section) should work on your phone. Just be wary of flashing modems, they are carrier specific so you should only flash modems for Bell. Here is a nice summary of available stuff for you.Included in the link I gave you, recoveries are also covered including the newest cwm, Although might I suggest giving twrp recovery a try. It's a great touch based recovery with many more options than cwm. The only hiccup with twrp is finding your internal sd card which is located at /data/media. Here is link to a post in the twrp recovery thread that has a cwm flashable version of the newest twrp recovery for ease of installation.

Thank you so much jethro650 I am trying trwp right now wil let you know how it works. As of for the roms I tried few miui, and some others but it always fails. I think because of the file ext .d2att. I think it does not recognises it. Any suggestion or am I doing something wrong?
I think if you install the latest recovery either cwm or twrp you'll find flashing rom's easier and less errors. Some of the earlier versions of cwm looked for a file in your build.prop and if it wasn't right you'd get error status 6 or 7. It was a failsafe so you couldn't flash the wrong version of a ROM. Now that its known that AT&T, Bell, Telus, Rogers can run the same ROM recoveries are a little more lenient in that respect.
Thanks so much I just installed twrp and m loving it will try again(faster thn cwm). Trying ARISTODEMO rom right know. hopefully will work.

My daily use build is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1869300.
It has proven to be stable with only a minor glitch here or there. You can also use Mobile Odin to flash ROMs if you like. I have used that and CWM with succes.

Hey everyone,
This is a modified stock kernel based on the Canadian stock kernel MVLALH1 and is ONLY compatible with stock-based ICS roms from the i747m. I haven't seen this around so I decided to make it myself for all to use and assist in development and was contacted to make this for all you Canadian folks without much dev help. The root application of choice is Chainfire's SuperSU. Remember that the first boot takes longer than usual after you clear the cache.
Features:
•Insecure rooted kernel
•init.d script support
•ADB support
•Custom bootanimation.zip support
Instructions:
1.Download the recovery-flashable zip to your phone's SD card
2.Flash in recovery
3.Wipe cache and dalvik cache
4.Reboot and enjoy
Standard disclaimer: I am not responsible for anything bad that happens to your phone. I have personally tested this on my own AT&T SGS3 and it works great for me.
Special thanks to NunHugger for his infinite wisdom in helping me figure out how to get custom boot animations working and letting me borrow his updater script. Also thanks to dsixda for the amazing Android Kitchen. Thanks again neuropass for your donation. Always appreciated, never necessary.

First of all, thanks for the kernel! Only one problem I got. I flashed this through Odin but it seems my device is still not rooted. what do I do next?
I tried installing the already rooted Samsung firmware but the install just hangs and soft bricks my S3 so I reverted back to stock and trying to root in a different way.
Any help? Please?

I apologize I should be more clear. The insecure kernel allows you to actually root but does not actually root the device. The next step in the process is for you to flash supersu or superuser (preferably in recovery. Go to chainfires supersu thread and it will provide you with the correct packages to flash. I believe that is one method of doing it. By insecuring a kernel it just allows you to root. You'll need to include su binaries but the cwm packages on chainfires thread should take care of that. Let me know if you're still having issues and I'll take a more personal look into it.
Secondary: I know for sure if you download the qcom toolkit it will quide you through rooting without issues at all. Then you can simply flash this kernel overtop and you should still be able to keep root.
