PLEASE READ THIS POST AND THE FAQ BEFORE POSTING
This post is going to be very brief until I have the time to add more content.
Attached is a kernel with TriangleAway support to permit resetting of your flash counter. However, the kernel has wifi issues on my device - if you have wifi reliability issues you'll probably want to flash a stock kernel in Odin. However, so far, everyone else who has tried this reports their wifi is working fine so it may just be my device.
Kernel source is at https://github.com/Entropy512/kernel_n8013_ics
Initramfs for N8013 is at https://github.com/Entropy512/initramfs_n8013_ics
Initramfs for N8000 is at https://github.com/espenfjo/initramfs_n8000_ics - Thank espenfjo for this one!
It's very barebones for now - Just TA support and removing some excessive debugging printks from drivers that are WAY too chatty.
N8000 support is courtesy of espenfjo
FAQ
Q: How do I install this?
Flash the release in Odin.
Q: I have Linux or MacOS and Heimdall won't work, how do I install?
Samsung changed the partitions around, you need Heimdall built with the patch at https://github.com/teamhacksung/Heimdall/commit/29eb480d6501c6ab650c8af01e60f60c1e38a1ec to flash a kernel. WARNING: If you use this to flash a kernel on an older device you may hardbrick! On older devices, BOOT was the PBL. On newer devices (I9300 and N80xx), it's the kernel!
Q: I want to return to the stock kernel after installing CWM and using this to reset the flash counter, how?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1853209
Q: I used the patched Heimdall above to flash a stock kernel and it triggered by flash counter, WTF?
This scared the crap out of me for a while. For some reason, on this device, Heimdall ALWAYS triggers the flash counter when flashing kernel (and probably recovery) - even if that kernel is a signed Samsung release. Flash using Odin instead, or extract the boot.img from the tar and
Code:
dd if=boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5 bs=1024
on a rooted device
Q: Will this work on GT-N8010?
Untested on N8010 (Although one positive user report so far). If you try to use the IR on it, it'll probably crash since that device doesn't have IR.
Q: Will you support the GT-N8000 and GT-N8010?
I hate blind development - but N8010 should be easy. N8000 is harder, however espenfjo (another Cyanogenmod maintainer) did the bringup (defconfig and a first test build) - I have pulled his changes into my source, if you are an N8000 owner thank him for his help. Keep in mind, though, that as a Cyanogenmod maintainer, this kernel will likely stop being maintained once I have a reasonably reliable CM bringup on this device. It's here to serve as an initial reference for other kernel developers on building for this device, and, of course, resetting the flash counter.
Q: Why is wifi so unreliable?
Because Samsung put all sorts of hax in their source that aren't in their shipped kernels. Their shipped kernels seem to be far closer to the I9300 in this regard. The 8/25 release should fix wifi, as it pulls in the I9300 wifi driver.
Change Log
08/25/2012:
Wifi fixed by pulling in I9300 wifi driver
08/23/2012:
Initial release, unreliable wifi on many devices
reserve for misc 2
I'll test on N8010 tonight and provide some feedback.
I've got two backups incase..

No, it requires flashing a kernel.
I think Chainfire's approach on some devices is to temp-flash a kernel that supports TA and then revert it, but I'm not sure if he'll support a device he doesn't own with this method.
How to reset counter and get back to stock
Please confirm this is the proper process as I'm exhanging this tablet for a new one.
1. Flash kernel via odin
2. Flash stock Rom via odin
3. Flash stock kernel/recovery via odin
I belive this is right but won't step 3 put the counter back to 1?
Thanks!

You forgot a step:
1) Flash this with Odin
2) Use the TriangleAway app
3) Flash stock firmware including kernel/recovery in Odin. FYI, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847706 includes EVERYTHING - kernel, recovery, system, etc.
Flashing in Odin only triggers the flash counter if flashing something that wasn't signed by Samsung, if the kernel is from Samsung it won't trigger the counter. Normally this is also the case for Heimdall but it has small issues with this device (see FAQ) that cause it to always trigger the counter, so you need to use Odin.

Ok i did step 1 but I dont see a triangle away app. Is this in recovery? In the Android OS there is no signs of this.
Thanks and sorry if I'm asking a dumb question. Never had a samsung where i needed to do this.

The TriangleAway app would be on the market^H^H^H^H^HGoogle Play Store.
Successful flash on the N8010, no WIFI issues in the past hour.
Triangle Away works too, counter reset to 0.
Great work!!

Ha i noticed that afterwards. Question though. I updated so was on yesterdays update that has no root yet as the CWM method doesnt work. Will flashing this kernel still allow the app to work or do i need root too?
If so I guess there shoudl be a stock with root injected odin release soon.
TriangleAway Support for N8000
Hi,
Here is the kernel for N8000.
It is based on the same source as Entropy512, but with support for N8000s radio.
Tested that TA works, 3g/HSDPA and phone calls work.
Sources for the N8000 variant is here:

Some people (not all, it's weird) get /system populated with /system/etc/install-recovery.sh - I don't know why some do but others don't.
HOWEVER: The way install-recovery.sh works is to try and convert the kernel image into a recovery image (it's weird) - if the kernel image is altered, the script will bomb. So most likely if you've got this kernel flashed, recovery will no longer get overwritten.
I'll pull espenfjo's defconfig tonight.
BTW, most of my wifi issues occur when streaming video, either via Skifta from a DLNA server or Netflix. They do occur at other times.
If no other N8013 users experience the issues I'm having, I'm going to return the device to stock and exchange it at BB. Normally I would not do such a thing based on behavior with a custom kernel - however if NO ONE else has issues it says my device is really borderline in a unique way.
Espenfjo - any wifi issues?

So it's either limited to N8013 units, or specific to MY N8013.
I should've released earlier instead of bashing my head against this... I might have discovered this and started working on a CM device tree earlier.
Still can't figure out why the stock kernel works fine though...
Another thing I notice, especially when video streaming, are frequent notifications that I'm connected to a network I'm already connected to - with no apparent transfer interruptions (although Skifta may just cache like a boss.)
Can N8013 users beat on this for a while to see how wifi behaves for them? I originally assumed it would be broken for all but it sounds like it might just be my unit.
So I could use this to reset my counter then Odin your new rooted tar , I still need to figure out how to get spen to work I am hoping your new tar will fix all my issues

If you wipe with STOCK recovery it might - seems like most of those who had weird issues wiped with CWM. It takes measures to protect /data/media that can result in unclean wipes sometimes.
This is a root injected FACTORY Stock L900VPALJ1 Odin Flashable Image. You flash this in Odin just as you would the completely stock ROM from samsung. I've simply injected the su binary and SuperSu app so you now have rooted stock image.
So if you want to keep your device stock yet have the functionality of root without tripping the counter or messing up OTA updates then this would be your best bet.
You can get ODIN here
and the drivers for the SPH-L900 so ODIN can detect your phone can be found at Samsung's site. Click on the Manuals & Downloads tab at the bottom and then on Software for the latest driver.
Instructions:
First, Download Image:
New Full Rom VPALJC
Mirror 1: root66_SPR_L900VPALJC.7z
Orig Release JB 4.1.1
Mirror 1: root66_SPR_L900VPALJ1.7z
Mirror 2: root66_SPR_L900VPALJ1.7z
Second, Extract and Flash:
Extract the root66_SPR_L900VPALJ1.tar.md5 from the .7z file you downloaded.
Use Odin, put phone into download mode [with phone off, hold vol. down + home + power ], connect to computer and open Odin.
once in odin click the PDA field and select the root66_SPR_L900VPALJ1.tar.md5 you downloaded.
Leave Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checked.
click start and
when done let phone reboot.
If you have issues flashing with Odin please ensure you are using the microusb cable that came with the phone, users have had issues using other cables.
If you just want a stock, rooted phone with no custom recovery, no plans to flash custom roms, etc. then you can stop HERE.
OTA Updates:
Stock Recovery: Once rooted with above method, if you receive a notification for an OTA update, it has been verified you can use OTA RootKeeper to retain root through the update process.
Non-Stock Recovery: If you have loaded a non-stock recovery (per below) you can simply use it to flash the OTA update flashable zip I've created.
Mirror 1: OTA Update LJ1 to LJC
Mirror 2: OTA Update LJ1 to LJC
Optional, Recovery (will trip counter):
It seems loading any custom recovery will trip the download mode flash counter. Loading a non stock recovery will also prevent you from successfully applying any OTA updates however here is a procedure for any who want a non-stock recovery:
Currently I see TWRP has support for this device so the instructions here will install that recovery.
Option 1: Download GooManager from the Play store. Once installed click the menu and select "Install OpenRecovery Script".
Option 2: Download the TWRP recovery image here. Copy it to the /sdcard of your phone.
Connect your phone to your computer and use adb
type adb shell
once in the shell run su
then
dd if=/sdcard/openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.1-t0ltespr.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p9
Alternate if unfamiliar with adb commands
Grab android terminal emulator from the play store and run the same commands starting with su and then the dd command.
De-Bloater
If you've made it this far with a stock, rooted phone with CWM or TWRP and you don't want to flash a custom rom (which will do its own de-bloating) you can check out my mrRobinson Note II De-Bloater to easily get rid of bloat system apps you no longer want to see. Simply flash in CWM or TWRP like anything else and you will be presented with a menu system to choose what to remove. If you are unsure it is safe to pick Minimal and still get a decent de-bloat.

History:
I've injected root into other stock images and those threads have a lot of valuable information which could answer some questions that may arise here. If you have time to do some reading here are a few of the informative ones:
Samsung Galaxy S3 [ATT / Bell / Telus / Rogers / Sasktel ]
Samsung Galaxy S3 [TMO / Wind / Mobilicity]
Also did sprint and vzw but there isn't much there that won't be covered above.
FAQ
Does this remove the Sprint bloatware?
A: No. It is same as stock, nothing is removed.
Does this use an unsecured boot.img
A: No. This flashes the stock boot.img in the VPALJ1 image.
If my flash counter has been tripped, and I flash this and reset the counter, will it stay at 0.
A: Yes, as long as you don't then flash a non-stock recovery.
Can I still get OTA updates?
A: Yes if you do not load a custom recovery or remove any system apps OTA updates will still come and be able to be successfully applied. If you want to retain root through the OTA process I'd recommend trying the SuperSU survival mode.
okay will this reset my phone completely? or just install root

Thanks I only asked because I figured if it could be injected as in tricking the phone this is coming from the manufacturer you could also tweak other things and still get away with it. ..Also without an OTA released yet can you say 100% an OTA will go through with no problems if we used this Thanks again

maybe im just a lil special at the moment, i haven't tripped the flash counter yet i learn something when i had the s3 i think that after you flash the tar for the recovery wait till its done (uncheck reboot before u flash) and then pull the battery and it doesnt trip the counter. if im wrong someone please correct me.

if you have a root explorer go to /system/etc and delete the install-recovery.sh file you see there. Or just rename it something else like install-recovery.bak
Hello,
I've tried to root my Galaxy Note 2 GT N7100 (KitKat 4.4.2) [original, NO custom ROM or CWM]
with
CF-Auto-Root-t03g-gtn7100.tar.md5
via ODIN
as shown in several tutorials.
All seemed passed ok, nothing obviously went wrong, SuperSU appears in the app drawer.
BUT
If started, SU has been be stopped, Root Checker says, the system is very slow and the phone is NOT rooted (properly).
Updating SU via PlayStore is NOT possible, only to deactivate.
Counter is on 1, Triangle away and other system apps don't work, because the phone isn't really rooted
Wipe data also is changing nothing.
So I've now a NON-rooted phone with the counter on 1, updates via OTA were denied, by reasons seen above.
What can I do? Could 'GalaxyNote2Root' be an option?

Does
openrecovery-twrp-2.7.2.1-t03g.img
match?
Or alternative: cwm6-root-note2, but this is old (2008)
I tried rooting my N7105 LTE last night and think I am having the same problem mate, hopefully someone can help!
Most important question: Why do you want to root your device?
If you want to run custom roms, forget about root cause you only need a custom recovery (best the recommended one for the rom) flashed with Odin.
Then you can flash any rom you want through this recovery and most of them are pre-rooted, so :good:
Only if you want to be rooted with stock rom I will try to guide you.

Only to prevent KNOX to deny access to the external card and run some apps, which need SU-rights, e.g. Titanium- / efs- Backup and so one.
At last to make TC working again. This app makes the phone freezing (superSU cannot start and hangs).
Thanks for yor reply.
One way to do it:
Flash custom recovery through Odin and afterwards latest SuperSu.
After bootup the app will deactivate Knox.
EDIT: I have not tested, cause I make my own rooted base-roms, so I hope it will work for you.

I have a Samsung Galaxy s6 on Sprint, running Android 5.1.1 and build OFE.
I've successfully rooted before but i'm still a noob in training lol
What I have done:
Developer options: Enabled / turned on USB debugging / unlocked autoloader
Used:
dot tech dot org / how-to-root-all-galaxy-s6-models-and-install-twrp-recovery-guide
(using all the files from the link)
FOLLOWED TO THE LETTER
I left odin on autoreboot, maybe that was the problem.
I saw in the 1st video that you should hold down the volume up/power/home immediately after hitting start in ODIN.
This was my second attempt, KNOX was already reading 1 warranty void and 0 x 0304 or something.
I read that if you get to 0 x 1 it bricks your phone so that you can't save it yourself. not sure if that's true.
I'm afraid to go further because I don't want to have a knox brick which I don't think I can recover from.
I would have to go to sprint and deal with those buttholes and I'm a national truck driver. I have no time for that.
Is there a way to kill knox? for good!?
I'm thinking of using ping pong root, any thoughts?
Ping Pong Root does not work on 5.1.1, so that won't help.
There is an excellent guide with links located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-galaxy-s6/general/how-to-to-100-stock-root-t3075448
Since you are already on 5.1.1, you can skip to step two. Flash a kernel to enable root through ODIN, then flash TWRP and you are good to go.

Nope, that ROM doesn't support the G920P.
I am running the Twisted Project ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-galaxy-s6/development/rom-twisted-project-6-v1-7-17-t3159117) which I recommend if you like a minimal approach.
The other "hot" ROM for our phones is the Ramified ROM (found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/spr...ment/ram9200-ofe-rom-thread-v3-5-1-1-t3173417) which is also excellent. Be sure to follow directions and flash the recommended kernel after flashing the ROM. (Set TWRP to flash ROM, flash kernel and reboot.)
Just to educate you a bit, the Twisted Project ROM was written for our phones, so that you don't need to flash a kernel after. Of course, you can if you want to.
The Ramified ROM was written for the Edge. Flashing a kernel (this is the recommended one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-galaxy-s6/development/kernel-unikernel-v5-t3166295) is needed to make it work correctly.
Have fun, dude!

A not much has been said in the thread, yes after Odin flashing the ENG kernel for our device and flashing a root script we can use rooted apps. @metalcated*posted a script that does push SuperSU into system/. This was originally posted in the AT&T GS6 forum. It's a potentially complicated process and if your phone shuts off, battery dies or you hard reboot you will be stuck in a bootloop, hotbooting works fine for Xposed. Will this method be practical for everyone probably not, but considering we were told the device was unrootable........
Read thru his thread, then read it again, seriously do this. And if you still want to try, backup everything you can just in case you need to reflash via Odin to recover from a bootloop. Here were my steps.
1. Yes this needs to be flashed before the process begins, the script wont run with the stock kernel.*
Here's a link to the eng kernel. Download and extract. Yes flash via ODIN, add the kernel file to the AP slot.*
http://www.mediafire.com/?2i5aeu6pr0ms7io
2. The only file I downloaded and used was this one:
http://www.mediafire.com/?m0b639pfnavjmha
(G920a5.1.1.root.metalcated-v4.zip)
3.Save it and extract it on your PC
4. Verify Samsung drivers and adb are installed
5.***ENABLE USB DEBUGGING*** this is an important step.*
6. Plug device into PC open file and run root script. It'll prompt you to press enter a couple of times and reboot the phone. Just follow the on-screen instructions.
7. After it reboots you have root access.
Root apps that work for me: Titanium backup/root explorer/build.prop editor/no frills.
I was able to delete all Knox apps and debloat the heck of the stock ROM. At no point did my device freeze, reboot on its own.
Let's work on bootloader unlock so we can flash custom rom, kernel and recoverys.
Thanks to Michael3214 for finding the method.
Thanks to Metalcateds for scripts.
Has anyone tried to push a script to make SELinux permissive on boot? We might be able to unteather the root.

I have tried this with no luck. It seams to be something in the kernel that's preventing untethered reboots so far. We can use this root to unlock bootloader with someone who is good enough.

There are some people looking into this but haven't had much luck as of yet. It also requires a lot of time which I haven't had much of lately. Hope someone else can jump in here as well. [emoji6]

Im not sure where to start. If you want to point me in the right direction i could posably help. Flashify does write recovery and kernel just gets blocked by bootloader.
do we have a xposed we can use?

There is an eng BL out there which allows flashing a recovery img but the signature checks fail so that doesn't work anyhow. Your welcome to try it. I can send you a link for it.
does anyone know whee to get the stock kernel?
This is confirmed working. I rooted, debloated, and unrooted and can now reboot with no worries and no bloat.

One of the last options in the settings of supersu is to fully unroot.
do you know if we can unroot and flash the stock kernel and be good to go? My phone was laggy with the eng kernel

I would be willing to try bootloader if it will work on OGG firmware.

Sent from my SGH-M919 using XDA Free mobile app

I performed the root. At the beginning yes it was laggy but i went ahead download (NO-frills CPU) base level has been 1.2GHZ max 1.5GHZ. Power-save mode ON and ZENUI launcher. AND my friends have been happy every since. NO lag at all.

A not much has been said in the thread, yes after Odin flashing the ENG kernel for our device and flashing a root script we can use rooted apps. @metalcated*posted a script that does push SuperSU into system/. This was originally posted in the atat GS6 forum. Fix your links.
First, link 1. goes to an encrypted file on Mega.
Second this link https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24438995911977129 doesn't link to the Root script but links out to metalcated's debloated system image for the S6.
Edit: Well that was quick to brick my phone haha. Script finished, phone rebooted to AT&T logo, script failed and now its soft bricked XD haha.
Guess it's time to ODIN.
