I literally just accepted the FH13 OTA update yesterday morning. As far as I can tell, I'm back to being unrooted and no custom recovery.
I've browsed the threads here about how to not brick your phone and upgrading and all that but to someone who doesn't flash a custom ROM every day it's a bit confusing. Every other line in one of the threads was striked out. I remember somewhere someone saying that installing CWM on ICS is a bad, bad thing. I don't even want to try it as of right now.
Can someone just explain to me, briefly, the steps to go form stock FH13 to CM9/10. I don't even need links to threads, I can do the digging. I just want to be absolutely sure of the steps. Like, do I have to go back to GB first? Can I backup my current system before I do any of this with Nandroid? Can I even install CWM on ICS?

Hey, I know you said you don't want any links, but they are kinda tricky to find. Currently, the most reliable way to do this is to use odin (or one-click) to downgrade your phone to an earlier build, and then use the absurdly stable recoveries and kernels there to upgrade once again. The way you should do this is as follows:
1. Use Odin one click to go back to EL29 (which is gingerbread)
2. Install a kernel with a recovery through the use of either Odin or Mobile Odin (I have provided a link for sfhub's Odin GUI)
3. Reboot your phone and give it a couple minutes.
4. reboot into recovery and flash away
The link to odin one click to get back to EL29 (provided by sfhub):http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
The link to Odin GUI to root EL29 (provided by sfhub): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
If you have any questions, please ask, and also be sure to watch the instructional videos provided by qbking77 in the above links. If this is your first time using odin, it can be somewhat nerve wracking, but be patient, take it slow and follow the directions. Good luck
EDIT: to answer the other questions in your post:

Well, you can use Mobile Odin to flash a kernel that has a working recovery, but for that you would need to have root. You could however use Odin(on the computer) to flash a kernel with a custom recovery, but It wouldn't be as reliable as flashing back to el29 and using that recovery. HOWEVER, a lot of people have been claiming that the newer recoveries for ics are safe and can be used.

Well, you would need a working recovery, so refer to the previous question.
Today I used ODIN to flash agats 0.5.4 kernel, which I then wiped and installed CM9. I think you need a rooted rom in-order to do what I did though.

I don't know if you check on some youtube tutorial, If not go to QBking77 channel, he has the latest and newest way to re-root your phone. Take your time and read. you probably know what to do, but lack the confidence to go thru with it, take your time and check out some youtube videos.
I was wondering this my self thanks.
Freeroot, thank you so much!
I never expected all of that. Every time I have ever asked a question I would usually get short answers and scolded for not doing the searching myself. I had hoped that I would get a better response if I said not to bother with links.
Seriously, thank you very much! Above and beyond! :good:

thanks sir, i went and paid for cwm pro, and it tells me that rom cant be updated here is my story and issues, thanks for any help you can give
galaxy s2 epic touch (sprint) when i got the unit i flashed it and had not backed up factory rom, i flashed with EG30-Stock-deodexV2-withCIQ now i have tried to ota update and kies, also rom manager, it give me the message that my rom developer has not set this rom to take ota updates, this is where i need some direction to flash a rom that i can get otas back and update, i do want to root due to my back up is in titanium pro, and would need root to pull back in my data settings and such, thanks for any help anyone can give me on my issue
you meant you bought rom manager pro. cwm can be seperate. its found in a kernel that has it installed. do not use rom manager it doesn't flash roms to our phone. if you are completely stock with no root the go to settings about phone. update. go through the updates. it will be fine as long as you have stock kernel. when that is done odin a new kernel that contains cwm. flash whatever you want after that.
---------- Post added at 07:50 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:45 AM ----------
btw. if I were you I would just use odin to flash a full tar. such as the ek02 or el29. its alot easier.

i need to get back to stock from my issues above, i need a stock rom, or a rom that will take ota, my phone keeps telling me i have a system update ready i think it should be ics, is there a good ics with root and cwm that i can flash to resolve this, and also a ics rom that will take updates moving forward?
sorry dude no ics. you are either getting a notice for ek02 or if they have rolled it out yet el29. noone has gotten ics. in the first page of the dev section there is a tar for el29. the stock one. all you need is to odin that. then you can have root. also when ics does come out you can just flash a stock kernel with stock recovery and update.

ah ok, i assumed ics was out, my xoom pad took an update today to 4.2.3 so i assumed this update was or would be ics, thanks, sir, the ek02 will resolve my issues to take ota or at least let me update in rom manager move forward?
well ek02 will let you update to the next ota only if you flash a stock kernel with stock recovery. also I have never heard of someone using this phone being able to use rom manager to flash anything.

No you can go here and get EL29 which is the latest update http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101 then go to the on click root link I have in the previous message and root to a el29 kernel with CWM and your rooted, up to date and ready to flash.(for some reason I thought you wanted EK02) I have done both full does exactly what it implies you start just like it was out of the box. Your contacts and email are backed up in you're google account so all you will have to do is sign in to your account. Any apps you have will be gone so you will have to go through market and redo them. Nodata, well you get the picture.......

Yes if you have TB you can save you apps use NODATA and then you can restore them from there, however I would just restore the app itself not the data. I do mine that way or i just reload everything again from market just in case you have a rogue app/data somewhere. as for the emails, are they all gmail accounts? if so they should be fine just resign into them.

since i just signed up i cant really post in the development thread anyways what i did was update the tab to stock ics, rooted, unlocked and flashed the flexreaper rom, what i didn't do was create a backup of the tab before flashing, if i wanted to go back to stock ics how would i do this? is it as simple as flashing the update.zip? or is there more to it then that?
on a side note if civato happens to read this, just want to mention that the link to the RF1-Default-Look is not working.

Yes...its as simple as flashing the update.zip
only thing is that when you flash the stock ics your bootloader will be relocked and you will have to go through the process again (which you should know isn't that difficult) to unlock it...there is a way to flash by removing some files from the stock ics rom...but i cant locate that method at the moment..
cool thanks, really just wanted to make sure, before i did something i shouldn't have.
dont plan on reflashing at this point unless something messes up.

Hi,
I am trying to flash the original stock rom that my tmobile came with before I flashed it with cyanogen mod. I have been viewing and searching for the right sites but I can't seem to find the correct stock rom. Also some sites are saying to use odin and some are saying to just flash the stock rom like i did with cyanogenmod. Any help would be appreciated.
Did you make a backup prior flashing the custom rom?

Thanks so much, you don't know how long I was looking for those. Just a few questions I have though.
Also...
1) Will this take away my root? And if so, if I every need to root again do I just do the same thing I did before to root? (because I want to use titanium backup to get my apps and data back.)
2) Will I be able to do system/T-mobile updates normally from the device from now on or will I have to do them manually?
3) Finally, and it's alright if you don't but do you know any good videos to follow to flash the stock rom? (I think I found one but this comment won't let me post it right now.)

First of all I would like to apologize for posting this because this probably happens a lot, but I couldn't find any forums to fix this, so I would be very grateful if someone could help me or send me a link to another forum with the same problem and solutions.
So I just did an OTA update on a rooted Samsung Galaxy SIII SPH-L710 phone and while doing the update it said that root access might be lost, attempt to fix? and so I pressed yes..so now and it turns on but will never get past the Samsung logo right before it gets to the homepage/apps or whatever. I have gone into recovery and data reset like 5 times already to no avail, and when I go into recovery..there are only like 6 options most are just apply update, there are no restore options. I had CWM installed but that's not showing up anymore. Yes I know I'm an idiot for trying to update on a rooted phone, but I would really appreciate any help that you guys can offer!

Ok, at this point, the thing I'd have you do is to flash a stock rooted Rom through Odin (while in download mode). The files are found in Sextape's thread over in their forums (warning, external link). Since you already wiped your user data and rooted, you should flash the "Restore" Version: SPH-L710_MD4_1130792_Rooted_Restore. They have directions on their page, so it should be nice.
Once you have root, you can use Goo Manager or Rom Toolbox to get a custom recovery back.
Thank you!! I will try this out and get back to you on whether it works or not.
And another note
Just to add something: In the future, please do not accept any OTA updates. If you're running a custom recovery or have frozen any stock apps, the OTA will fail (sometimes it'll get part of the way through, like yours did).
The best way to keep your phone up-to-date is to just flash the latest stock rooted rom when it comes out. Freeza typically has the latest stock rooted rom over in his thread, and for the most part, gets his Rom updated way before I ever get the OTA. You'll want to get the DeOdex version and if you're coming from a stock rooted Rom, you can do a "dirty flash" (only wipe cache and dalvik cache), no need to lose your user data.
Again, if you're running a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) you're asking for trouble if you try an OTA update.

Sorry, quick question. Do you know if I should still be rooted after doing this? I see superuser still installed
yea you should be rooted if you used the rom that topherk referenced
Alright so I was rooted, but now there's been at least one new version of Android, so I need to do it again and update. I am confused as to how this whole thing works. I used to have an iPod touch which I jailbroke, and you could update the firmware simply by jailbreaking with a jailbroken version of the newer OS. Does Android work in a similar fashion with rooting, in which when you flash the ROM (am I saying this right?), it is a different Android version? So can I just find a ROM that's 4.3 to update, or should I update to 4.3 over the air and then root again? I actually already did the OTA update because it was really bothering me and currently I don't even use root features frequently. Anyway, the no-flash trip link in the how to root section says 4.1.1, which I assume means Android 4.1.1, and I don't want this. What can I do?
If I get a current version of a custom ROM, LiquidSmooth or something, will that update my Android version?
I'm sorry if I'm making zero sense right now, or if this is in entirely the wrong section. I'm trying my best here.
You're on stock ? If so what version,4.3?
FYI this isn't the right place to post this. But check out THIS thread about Preparing to flash an ND8 (kitkat) rom. It is short, very informative and has important links to other things you may need. Good luck!

I will help U but you take full responsibility for anything that may happen to your device in the process.
It seems like U are still rooted, but but just on MK3 still. This will upgrade U to ND8
Here goes:
#1 Install Odin on your PC, run the program. (Link to Odin 3.07. LINK for ODINClick link and it will automatically download to system) Extract from ZIP
#2 Load the ND8 tar in the PDA Slot, put your phone in Download Mode (power off, hold Vol Down, Home, and Power), and connect your phone to the PC. (leave check in the Auto-Reboot and F-Reset)
#3 Then after that is successful run CF Auto Root LINK CF-AUTO ROOT This down load must be extracted and U will see Odin application in there too along with CF-Auto tar
#3b (I didn't do this because I don't really care, but if U want) get ROM Toolbox or something of that nature and remove any app with Knox in the title or that has the Knox symbol.
#4 Load your phone into Download Mode one last time and then put whatever recovery you have (I use Philz, make sure you grab the .tar format instead of the zip) and put that in the Bootloader slot in Odin. U will then be rooted and custom recovery.. U can stay there and set up phone or flash a custom ROM. I would do a nandroid back-up in philz first before U flash a new ROM though.
Link to PhilZ 6.416 Tar DIRECT LINK I use this one because it WORKS with no issues
or U can go here and get other versions of Philz. LINK
This guide was originally posted by Bilgerryan (below) and I augmented a few things and added links so U wouldn't have to search and search.

Glad that answers are coming in, but this thread needs to be moved; @KennyG123, can you assist?

Thread moved
Thanks for the move. Reading is hard.
So can someone just clear up the whole version thing for me? I attempted to do the 4.4 OTA update that showed up, and it seems to have worked in the sense that the notification went away, but my version is the same (4.3) and I seem to still be rooted. I guess I really don't understand any of the rooting process. I know I've used Odin and stuff but I really don't know what any of it does. Is there already a thread somewhere that explains what all of this stuff actually does? I mean, updating and staying rooted can't be that hard to do.
